BEING HERE WITH YOU/ ESTANDO AQUÍ CONTIGO: 42 ARTISTS FROM SAN DIEGO AND TIJUANA

ON VIEW THROUGH FEBRUARY 3, 2019

Being Here with You/ Estando aquí contigo brings together work by 42 artists and collectives living

and working in San Diego and Tijuana. Presenting over 100 works by early career and established

artists working in a wide range of mediums, the exhibition highlights distinctive practices shaping

conversations and communities in our binational region and beyond.

Being Here with You/ Estando aquí contigo borrows its title from the song “Angel Baby” by Rosie

and the Originals, a teenage band from National City, California. Included on the soundtrack for

the Border Trolley Tours organized by Cog•nate Collective and Kate Clark in the summer of 2017,

the bilingual song points to the region’s rich history of homegrown talent. The “42” artists of the

title harkens back to MCASD’s 1985 survey, A San Diego Exhibition: Forty-Two Emerging Artists.

Since that time, the Museum has broadened the focus of its collection and exhibition program to

include the work of Tijuana artists. Being Here with You/ Estando aquí contigo reflects MCASD’s

mandate to serve the binational constituency of the San Diego/ Tijuana region and affirms its

commitment to artists on both sides of the border. The exhibition recognizes that San Diego and

Tijuana’s artistic communities are distinct, shaped by dissimilar contexts and circumstances, yet it

points to growing artistic exchanges between the two cities and aims to foster greater reciprocity.

The words “being here with you/ estando aquí contigo” may also evoke the spirit and format of

the exhibition itself, which brings different kinds of artworks into proximity, opening up points of

connection and alliance. While not organized by media or theme, the exhibition draws attention

to common interests and strategies. An improvisational approach to process and performance

is shared by numerous artists, many of whom engage in painterly experimentation and the

transformation of traditional craft forms. Many artists also demonstrate a resourcefulness with

respect to materials, especially through the reclamation and reanimation of found objects.

Collaboration is a frequent strategy, with several artists working directly with their peers or

alongside members of their communities. Artists in the exhibition address many other urgent

issues affecting our region and our world, including the contested status of monuments;

colonialism and its afterlives; feminist and queer politics; environmental degradation; and the

right to urban, public space. Being Here with You/ Estando aquí contigo also acknowledges

the crucial role that alterative art venues play in the region’s art communities, with nearly a

quarter of the exhibition’s artists running or programming independent spaces in both cities.

Being Here with You/ Estando aquí contigo is co-organized by Curator Jill Dawsey and Assistant Curator Anthony Graham.

The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.

Being Here with You/ Estando aquí contigo: 42 Artists from San Diego and Tijuana is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art

San Diego and made possible by the Being Here with You/ Estando aquí contigo: Underwriters Community. Institutional support of

MCASD is provided by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and the County of San Diego Community

Enhancement Fund.

EXHIBITIONS DOWNTOWN

TREVOR PAGLEN: SITES UNSEEN

ON VIEW FEBRUARY 22 THROUGH JUNE 2, 2019

Trevor Paglen blurs the lines between art, science, and investigative journalism to construct

unfamiliar and at times unsettling ways to see and interpret the world around us. Paglen, who

holds a Ph.D. in geography from the University of California at Berkeley, approaches his work

with a scientist’s sense of inquiry. He employs a range of techniques and technologies to ask

questions and probe for answers about surveillance, secrecy, privacy, and democracy. Paglen

refers to his art-making as “experimental geography,” a hybrid discipline that uses ideas from

the field of geography to extend our understanding of where and how we live.

Paglen was born in Camp Springs, Maryland, in 1974. A childhood spent on military bases

made him familiar with and empathetic to its culture. Now based in Berlin, Germany, he has

traveled the world over the past fifteen years collecting visual and material evidence of

things we are not meant to see. Trevor Paglen: Sites Unseen surveys Paglen’s career and

examines how he interrogates public records and spaces to create images, artifacts, and

sculptural objects that reveal a covert world operating just out of view. Inspired by the history

of American landscape photography, Paglen’s photographs explore the land, sea, sky, and

heavens to show the physical infrastructure of secrecy, from classified military installations

and spy satellites to communications cables and artificial intelligence (AI). His artifacts

show the systems—logos, patches, and code names—that help maintain a cloak of invisibility.

His sculptures act in opposition to what his images and artifacts expose, by offering alternative

uses for military and intelligence technologies. With these objects, Paglen invites us to

imagine a future in which “new forms of freedom and democracy can emerge.”

Trevor Paglen: Sites Unseen originated at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) and is organized by John Jacob,

SAAM’s McEvoy Family Curator for Photography. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

Trevor Paglen: Sites Unseen is organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The C.F. Foundation in Atlanta

supports the museum’s traveling exhibition program, Treasures To Go.

MCASD: For this exhibition, you created an

affecting new video work, PENANCE (2018),

which shows you having the word SORRY

tattooed onto your stomach. In this video,

you recite apologies for actions both tragic

and trivial. How did you arrive at the idea

for the piece? And how did you commit to

using your body in this way?

LISSA CORONA: During my first year of

graduate school, I began dissecting the concept

of apologies. Who apologizes, how do they do

it, and who are they for? Self-examination and

radical vulnerability are at the heart of my

art-making, and so I thought it was particularly

important to understand how I utilize apology

in my life—as a tool of repair, a form of

protection, a symbol of strength, a brand of

insecurity, and a personal statement.

I quickly realized I was in constant apology

mode. I apologized for the weather. I apologized

for not living up to ridiculous standards. I

apologized for allowing myself to feel hurt by

others. Apology was my most reliable mode

of communication. In order to acknowledge

its power, I decided to commit my body to the

ultimate apology. SORRY defined so much of

my life and explained succinctly how I move

through the world as a woman, a mother, an

artist, a wife, a friend, a daughter, a teacher,

and a person compelled by feelings of regret,

shame, disappointment, and spite. I wanted

to reclaim the power of apology for love and

work and effort.

MCASD: What was the process of making this

piece and shooting the video like?

LC: I conceived of the idea ten years ago, and

this exhibition felt like the perfect opportunity

to finally commit. I’ve always had difficulty

asking others for help, and trust was a big part

of this piece. My brother and sister-in-law,

Daniel and Emily Corona, are both experimental

filmmakers and were eager to be my videog-

raphers. I wanted a tattoo artist who knew

me well, and whose work I would be proud to

live with forever. I asked Rene Lopez, a former

student, to design and execute the piece.

Five hours of tattooing, doing my best to remain

still and straight-faced, served as both

a cathartic exercise of will and a form of self-

flagellation: punishing myself for my wrongs

while taking accountability for my actions

in the most self-serving and abject way I

could imagine.

MCASD: Were you thinking about the tendency

that women in our society have to apologize?

LC: The tendency for women to apologize for

anything and everything is something I struggle

with daily. In a patriarchal society, women

have been the scapegoats for men and their mistakes for centuries. Growing up, my mother would

sarcastically point out that any problems someone develops would inevitably be blamed on the

mother’s failures. When I became a mother of twins, I finally understood her years of complaints—

no matter how hard we try to do right by our children, our moments of weakness and vulnerability

can affect them in ways we never intended. I believe women have been characterized as care-takers,

people-pleasers, and peace-makers and nearly all of the women I know have the tendency to

blame themselves unnecessarily. While this is inherently problematic for women, there is also

something beautiful and authentic about this expression. Navigating our place in the world as individuals,

as we hopefully make our most verdant attempts to understand others deeply, an apology is a

concise way to express empathy.

MCASD: What is it like living with this tattoo now?

LC: I’m still finding it hard to believe that the tattoo is real and it’s staying with me for the rest of

my life. I love looking at it, I love the way it moves with my belly, and I love that it’s something few

people will actually see in person. The tattoo, for me, functions as a reminder to be empathetic,

humble, and responsible for my actions. SORRY is about strength, vulnerability, and the desire to

become a better person—day in and day out. It’s about honesty, sincerity, and deep longing for

absolution. It’s about repair, suffering, acceptance, and forgiveness. SORRY isn’t a word we should

use less. It’s a promise to do right by others and ourselves.

AXLINE LECTURE

MCASD and The San Diego Museum of Art present

the 19th Annual Axline Lecture featuring Trevor Paglen

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 2019 > 6-7 PM RECEPTION;

7-8:30 PM LECTURE > LOCATION TO BE ANNOUNCED

MCASD and The San Diego Museum of Art invite you to the

19th annual Axline Lecture featuring internationally renowned

artist Trevor Paglen. Paglen’s work spans image-making,

sculpture, investigative journalism, writing, engineering, and

numerous other disciplines. Known for his striking landscape

photographs that emerge from his interest in science and

journalism, Paglen’s work evokes more than a pristine or idyllic

location; his images make visible the structures and technologies

that impact our lives and reveal government secrecy. He

has received numerous awards, including a 2017 MacArthur

Fellowship, and the 2014 Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer

Award for his contributions to counter-surveillance. Trevor

Paglen has exhibited his work at the Smithsonian American Art

Museum, the New Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art,

the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, and in

the upcoming MCASD exhibition Trevor Paglen: Sites Unseen.

Rather than trying to find out what’s actually going on behind closed doors, I’m trying to take a long hard look at the door itself.

—Trevor Paglen

EVENTS

SANCTUARY PRINT SHOP

Sanctuary Print Shop is a project conceived of by artists Sergio De La Torre and Chris Treggiari.

In a time when the world seems more divisive than ever, these artists give us the opportunity

to reimagine the possibility of connecting with one another and finding refuge in activism.

Transforming the museum into a space for collaboration, dialogue, and action, these two

artists invite visitors to state their truths and work collectively to create protest posters. This

project originated at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, exploring the

history of the sanctuary ordinance in the state of California.

Here at MCASD, the timeline documenting this history will examine San Diego’s relationship

to immigration. Through a series of workshops and conversations with immigrants, lawyers,

activists, and others, visitors will have the opportunity and the tools to raise their voice as

they activate the print shop.

Join us from 12 to 1:15 PM on select weekend dates as we create posters and foster dialogue in

a place of safety.

MCASD’S PARTNERSHIP WITH WESTFIELD UTC CONTINUES

As part of MCASD’s commitment to maintaining a presence in the La Jolla community,

three works from its permanent collection have been installed at Westfield UTC for

a three-year partnership that brings MCASD artworks and art-making experiences back

to La Jolla. The first installation includes three sculptures—Sandro Chia’s The Twin’s Father

(1986); Judith Shea’s Eden (1987); and Francisco Zuñiga’s Juchiteca de Pie (1966).

These works provided inspiration for Sculpture Frenzy, a pop-up Family ArtLAB at

Westfield UTC. On a sunny Saturday afternoon last summer, families and Westfield UTC

shoppers alike were treated to conversation-based tours of the sculptures, followed by

a sculpture-making workshop led by MCASD Gallery Educators. In November, MCASD’s pop-up

Family ArtLAB returned with Sketch and Draw, a themed workshop teaching life drawing

techniques. Mark your calendar for the next Family ArtLAB pop up, Embracing Assemblage,

happening on Saturday, March 9 from 2 to 4 PM.

TEEN ADVISORY GROUP (TAG)EXPLORES YOUTH HOMELESSNESS

The Teen Advisory Group (TAG) continues to examine various social issues through the lens of

contemporary art, with a focus this year on the topic of youth homelessness. As part of TAG’s

research and exploration within the local community, teens met with San Diego based artist

David White, who joins the educator team as this year’s Guest Artist. On Saturday, October 20,

TAG met with White at the New School of Architecture in the East Village, where the artist

teaches, to begin in-depth conversations about what constitutes “home.” The field trip invited

teens to think about how the word “homeless” is used to categorize and generalize a group

of people.

White, one of 42 artists featured in this fall’s exhibition, Being Here with You/ Estando aquí contigo,

has long addressed issues of homelessness, gentrification, and displacement. He approaches art

historical conventions as a way of engaging individuals or groups at the scale of the neighborhood.

This year, TAG students expanded their own definitions of what constitutes contemporary art by

working together to create participatory installations. During December’s Downtown at Sundown,

TAG will join forces with community service partners in an interactive event inviting participants

to create care packages of toiletries and other necessities while learning more about factors that

affect our local youth.

Based on this collaborative exploration with local artists, community collectives, organizations,

workshops, and other guest speakers, teens will develop a group project for the TAG culminating

showcase in mid June 2019. The teens’ final project will focus on peripheral concepts of identity

and community, urging audiences to think beyond their preconceived notions of homelessness.

The Teen Advisory Group is supported by funding from The Hearst Foundations and California Arts Council.

MONTE CARLO

On Saturday, September 8, MCASD held its 42nd annual gala at the home of Matthew

and Iris Strauss in Rancho Santa Fe. Monte Carlo: An Art Affair broke all previous

fundraising records in support of MCASD’s exhibitions and public programs. Chaired

by Iris Strauss, Joan Jacobs, and Karen Cohn, this unforgettable evening included

fine dining and dancing under the stars, and guided tours of the Strauss’ art collection,

which ArtNEWS consistently names among the world’s top 200 private collections.

A huge thank you to our Monte Carlo Chairs, our guests, and everyone who made

this year’s event an enormous success!

MCASD: Tell us what it’s like to be an MCASD

Contemporary Collector?

It’s incredibly fun to meet fellow art lovers and

collectors. There is no feeling that “I must stop

talking about art” with this crowd. We get to

know each other, discuss exhibitions we’ve seen

and share about artists who have left a strong

impression, overall expanding each other’s

art knowledge and discoveries. At MCASD’s

Cocktails & Collections program, I get to see

what other people live with and hang on their

walls, adding wonderful perspective to my

personal collecting journey.

How is travelling with MCASD different than

travelling on your own?

I travel a lot to view art; logistics can quickly

become a military exercise which can detract

from the act of viewing art. When I travelled with

MCASD, juggling between exhibitions openings,

museum hours and traffic to maximize what I

can see in a short period of time all went away.

All I had to do was simply enjoy privileged access

to the best private collections and exhibitions

in the company of equally passionate art lovers.

Heavenly!

EXCLUSIVE TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES FOR MEMBERS

on giving. We started with a private photography

collection nested in an apartment with a

breathtaking panoramic view over Central Park,

followed by trips to Dia: Beacon and Storm King

Art Center, more private art collection visits,

and a Nick Cave sound suit show finale.

Where are you headed next?

I can’t wait to find out what reflective and optical

MCASD LA JOLLA GROUNDBREAKING

Two years ago, on the occasion of the Museum’s 75th anniversary, MCASD announced a

transformative vision for the future: a campaign that would dramatically grow the campus

and increase its operational endowment. With the acquisition of additional property, invested

stakeholders, and the endorsement of the city of La Jolla and San Diego, the Museum broke

ground on its long planned for expansion project on Thursday, October 18, 2018.

The special ceremony was led by MCASD’s David C. Copley Director and CEO Kathryn Kanjo,

Board President Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, and Founding Principal of Selldorf Architects, Annabelle

Selldorf. MCASD Trustees, donors, and staff were joined by civic officials Congressman

Scott Peters, San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry, and Assemblyman

Todd Gloria, to witness this important milestone in the project.

Having raised $80M towards the $95M Capital Campaign goal for the renovation of its flagship

La Jolla facility, MCASD acknowledged and thanked all campaign contributors, with special

thanks to lead donors Joan and Irwin Jacobs and Matt and Iris Strauss.

Selldorf Architect’s design calls for new construction to the south that will allow for two levels

of light-filled galleries, offering a wide range of volume and character. Vertical windows will welcome

the site’s distinct natural light and coastal views into the Museum. A large, flexible multipurpose

gallery on the lower level will provide capacity for public programs, artist talks, performance

art, music, and other immersive educational activities. By accommodating the required parking

spaces underground, the existing parking lot on the north end of campus will be transformed

into a public art park. New seaside terraces will offer dramatic views of the Pacific Coast from two

levels. MCASD’s operations will be further enhanced by up-to-date back of house spaces including a

new loading dock, art preparator’s room, freight elevator, art storage, and two levels of below

grade parking.

GROUNDBREAKING

Following the spirited groundbreaking ceremony, MCASD Trustees, Members, and campaign

contributors headed to the home of Trustee Elizabeth Phelps for a private luncheon hosted by

Joan and Irwin Jacobs. The event celebrated the birthday of Irwin Jacobs, who was serenaded

by the brass section of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, who played Happy Birthday to

Jacobs before Kathryn Kanjo presented him with a special gift from the Museum, a sculptural

rendition of Qualcomm’s first creation—a cell phone—created by artist Jean Lowe.

The Museum anticipates opening in 2021. MCASD is thankful to its partners in this project,

including Gafcon, Inc., LPA Inc., and Selldorf Architects.

ON THE ROAD

ON THE ROAD

One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Andy Warhol is often recognized for his celebration of Hollywood and celebrity. In Liz Taylor Diptych, a promised gift to MCASD, Warhol depicts one of his most iconic figures against a silver background. Alongside the second panel, left blank, the work evokes the silver screen of the movie industry as well as the flash and glamour of the actress’s life.

This fall, the work is on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art in their new exhibition, Andy Warhol—From A to B and Back Again. With new research and scholarship since the artist’s death in 1987, this is the first retrospective of the artist’s work in the United States in almost 20 years. The exhibition will be on view through March 31, 2019, and is accompanied by a new catalogue.

DAVID ANTIN: SKY POEMS

On Saturday, September 29, more than 200 people gathered behind the Museum’s La Jolla location on Coast Boulevard to witness artist Julien Bismuth’s tribute to the late poet and performance artist David Antin (1932–2016). A mesmerized crowd watched a fleet of five airplanes fly side-by-side across a clear blue sky, releasing puffs of smoke as they spelled out a three-line poem by Antin. Guests spoke the words aloud as they appeared in the sky and pondered their meaning over Joe’s on the Nose coffee and scones.

This special event was a restaging of a performance and literary event created by Antin in the late 1980s. On September 3, 1988, MCASD presented Sky Poems 2. The first stanza of the poem appeared in 1987 in the sky over Santa Monica. In La Jolla the following year, a team of aerial skywriters reproduced the second stanza over the beach and the Museum. For this restaging, the poem began in La Jolla and the second stanza was flown above the Los Angeles County Museum of Art later in the afternoon.

Antin wrote that the work was inspired by his childhood memory of a fleet of advertising planes skytyping a message over Coney Island. His original idea for the piece was “an epic poem stretching across the United States... gradually being written for people who would never see all of it.” While Antin was only able to realize two parts of the epic poem, the 2018 revival saw the poem stretch across Southern California in a single day.

Adding more meaning to this special event, the pilot who led the fleet of skywriters was Stephen Stinis, president of Las Vegas-based Skytypers. He is the son of the pilot who led the team that created the sky poems for Antin’s original project in the late 1980s, as well as—it turns out—the grandson of Andy Stinis, the pilot who led the skywriting team that Antin watched over Coney Island as a child.

David Antin: Sky Poems was co-presented by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

MCASD’s presentation is made possible by Maryanne and Irwin Pfister.

Sanctuary Print Shop is a project by Sergio De La

Torre and Chris Treggiari. In a moment when the

world seems more divisive than ever, these artists

give us the opportunity to reimagine the possibility

of connecting with one another and finding refuge

in activism. Transforming the museum into a space

for collaboration, dialogue, and action, these two

artists invite visitors to state their truths and work

collectively to create protest posters. This project

originated at the Yerba Buena Center for the

Arts in San Francisco, exploring the history of the

sanctuary ordinance in the state of California. Here

at MCASD, the timeline documenting this history

will examine San Diego’s relationship to immigration.

Through a series of workshops and conversations

with immigrants, lawyers, activists, and others,

visitors will have the opportunity and the tools to

raise their voice as they activate the print shop.

Join us on select weekend dates beginning

December 2 as we create posters and foster

dialogue in a place of safety.

beyond. This year, we’re asking you to help us raise

EXTENDED SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP (ESP)

SHOWCASE

> THIRD THURSDAYS > 5:30-7:30 PM > DOWNTOWN,

1001 KETTNER BLVD.

MCASD’s Extended School Partnership (ESP)

program facilitates arts-based learning

experiences in the classroom and at the Museum.

The program empowers 6-12th grade teachers to

use the Museum as an extension of the classroom,

enhancing their ability to incorporate original art

objects into their curriculum, promoting students’

critical and creative thinking. The program consists

of professional development for the classroom

teacher, class visits to the Museum, in-classroom

critique sessions, and a culminating showcase

where students are able to showcase their

accomplishments at the Museum.

Each partnership is unique to the individual school

and can be as short as a couple of weeks or as

long as an academic year. Through multiple school

and Museum visits led by our Gallery Educators,

students and teachers embrace the Museum as a

learning resource.

This fall, students in the visual arts and math

classes from El Cajon High School, La Jolla

Country Day School, and The Charter School of

San Diego were invited to explore the exhibition

Being Here with You/ Estando aquí contigo and

create original works of art in response to the

processes, materials, and themes used by the

artists in the exhibition. Join the students to

celebrate their work. This event is held during

Downtown at Sundown and is free to attend.

FAMILY ARTLAB: PRINTING FOR ACTION

San Diego and Tijuana region. We’ll end with a

workshop in the Sanctuary Print Shop.

This program is recommended for families with

children ages five and older. Tickets are sold on a

first come, first served basis, and include Museum

admission; capacity is limited to 60 participants.

This program is free for MCASD Members and

military families; $15 for non-members. The family

As part of MCASD’s commitment to maintaining a

presence in the La Jolla community, three works

from its permanent collection have been installed

at Westfield UTC for a three-year partnership that

brings MCASD artworks and art-making experiences

back to La Jolla. Beginning in the summer of

2018, MCASD has engaged families and Westfield

UTC shoppers in a series of pop-up, art-making

workshops designed to make art more accessible

for all. Led by MCASD Gallery Educators, Family

ArtLAB: Assemblage invites participants to combine

found objects and collage to create unique works of
