NURSERY/KINDERGARTEN (RM 10AM)

N ovember was a very busy time in the Nursery room. The students enjoyed learning about Colour and doing a variety of colour-related activities.

It was wonderful to see and talk to all the parents during our parent/teacher conferences. Communication is a very important component in your child’s learning journey. In December we will be learning about Nursery Rhymes. This includes listening to many Nursery Rhyme stories and songs. Research has shown that children who know a variety of Nursery Rhymes become stronger readers as they move into higher grades. As well, the students will be asked to bring in a “collection” they have for a Math Counting Collection activity. More information regarding this will soon follow. We will also be busy practicing for our Winter Concert which is on Tuesday December 19th at Sargent Park School. The students are very excited about this and cannot wait to show their families their performance. Have a wonderful holiday season and a safe and happy new year!

Mrs. Lagadi

The Nursery/Kindergarten children are now well into the routines of our classroom at Clifton School. Each day their confidence increases as they become an important part of their group with a special contribution to make. We have had a wonderful time exploring parts of the trees and how they change from season to season. We have

also learned how valuable trees are to our world and the many benefits they provide. We especially enjoyed reading the book "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein which defines how important trees really are. Over the last few weeks we have been studying colours. We sorted Smarties, graphed them and then took our data and transferred them into a book. The most fun ever was

the end of the activity when they got to eat their Smarties. Who knew Eating Smarties could be so educational! As our colour unit continued, we learned about primary and secondary colours, as well as how to read the colour words. All these lessons were done through songs, poems, books and exploration at our art centre. We are now working on the concept of tinting and shading. The children will have an opportunity to discover how colours can be made lighter and darker all through experimenting with adding white and black. We continue to work on our math skills incorporating counting, patterning and instantly recognizing numbers through a ten frame, a dice pattern and finger patterns. Just a reminder that every day 2 is library. Please jot that down on your calendar so the children can continue to exchange books and keep reading alive. I'd like to welcome our student teacher Stacey from the University of Manitoba who has been with us for the month of November. Thank you to all the parents who came out for parent teacher this month, your participating in your child's learning is invaluable. Looking ahead....We will be taking a closer look at the season of Winter and all it brings.

Mrs. Nepon

NURSERY/KINDERGARTEN (RM 10PM)

T he first two months of the school year have flown by. The children in room 9 have adjusted to their new grade and classroom. They have also learned to follow most of the new routines.

We have been working on strengthening and learning our alphabet letter names and sounds and learning to use our letter knowledge in our daily writing.

The children have also been developing their numeracy skills through a variety of activities. We have been developing our skills in addition, subitizing, and counting. We have also begun our Guided Reading and Guided Math programs.

We have continued with our theme, “Getting Ready for Winter.” We also enjoyed doing Halloween activities. We are all looking forward to a wonderful year together.

Please continue to practice counting by 1s to 100, by 2s to 20, by 5s to 100, and by 10s to 100 from random starting points, forward and backward with your child at home. If you are counting beyond 100, please remember that we don’t use the ‘and’ unless the number has a decimal point. For example, we don’t say one hundred and one, we say one hundred one, etc. If we are counting money, we say ‘and’ for the decimal. For example, $1.25, we say one dollar and twenty five cents

Mrs. Funk-Lawson

A big thank you to all the parents who came out to Parent-Teacher Conferences. It was so nice to see you and discuss all of your child’s wonderful accomplishments in the first term. The students continue to work on the reading process and practicing these skills at home. A “shout out” to the students who worked so hard and read a book every night since the beginning of the school year. Every 5 pages they fill in on their reading logs, they receive a prize from the prize box. I am also impressed with the number of students that are using the Raz-Kids reading program at home. I have placed a letter in your child’s Home Reading Book with your child’s username (pdeluca10). Your child knows their own personal password. This program is great as it caters to your child’s reading level and asks important comprehension questions. Keep reading! In math, students continue to work on math games that practice addition and subtraction facts to 20, 50 and 100. We are also working on explaining the strategies we are using to add and subtract larger numbers. The holidays are just around the corner. We are practicing for the winter concert and look forward to performing for you. We wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday. Season’s Greetings from Grade Twos!

GRADE 1 ROOM 9

GRADE 1/2 ROOM 7

Thank you to all the parents who came to parent teacher interviews. It was a pleasure sitting down with you to discuss your child’s report card and goals in the classroom. During the month of October, the students collected plastic bags for recycling as part of the Take Pride Winnipeg Bag Up program. The students enjoyed sorting, organizing and counting all the bags that came in. The final total was 4030 bags! Thank you for all your support. In Language Arts, we are working on writing a paragraph and using juicy words in our writing. In Math, we are practicing different ways to solve addition and subtraction problems. In Social Studies, we are making Canadian memory boxes to show our understanding of Canadian symbols. Students are asked to read every night for 20 minutes and to log their reading in their Home Reading folder. I look forward to seeing you at the Winter Concert on December 19th!

Ms. Kuzyk

It was so nice to see all of the parents at parent-teacher conferences! In November, we spent a lot of time learning about animal habitats and adaptations. Each student researched a Canadian animal and made a diorama to represent that animal's habitat. They all turned out so beautifully. The students also wrote a Pourquoi story about the animal they researched and created a little booklet. In math, we started our unit on multiplication. This month we will be doing a lot of creative writing and focus on adding descriptive details to our writing. It will also be a busy month practicing for our winter concert.

Please continue to make sure your child is reading their home reading books every night. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the school.

Mrs. Reis

GRADE 2/3 ROOM 2

GRADE 4 ROOM 4

GRADE 5 ROOM 6

Hello everyone and welcome to December! We have been so busy in room 6 that December snuck up on us so quickly. November was a great month filled with experimenting, researching, planning, and more. We are learning to become more responsible as grade five students and look forward to upcoming challenges. With only a few weeks left until the New Year, we continue to set goals for ourselves, reflect on our goals and create a stronger path of learning in front of us. Have a great month!

Mrs. Schultz

H ello, my name is Tyson. I am a student in the grade 6 classroom. This month in Mathematics we learned a lot about Fractions. We learned equivalency, fractions to decimals, mixed and improper fractions and something called the Crazy Baker! The Crazy Baker bakes cakes that have crazy fractions. We also learned about World War I and World War II. These are very important subjects. We are currently reading Hana’s Suitcase and Making bombs for Hitler. Two novels about children in World War II. Some of the students from Room 38 sang, spoke and presented at the Remembrance Day Ceremony. Thank you to all the parents who came to the Parent Teacher Conferences.

GRADE 6 ROOM 38

I.L.C. ROOM 32

T hank you to all parents who were able to meet for Parent-Teacher Conferences. Students worked hard to prepare and were so proud to share their accomplishments.

This term students have learned so much from Mrs. Goddard, our Winnipeg School Division Learning Technologies Support Teacher, who has been visiting our classroom to teach us about using the Seesaw programme to create digital portfolios of our school work. We have learned to take photographs and add captions to many of our classroom assignments. We have also learned to use Google Docs for our writing pieces. It has been so exciting to write, edit and publish our work. Congratulations to students who have been so responsible for reading nightly and practicing the skills we have been working on in class. Home reading is the most important homework students in room 32 have. 15 to 20 minutes a night can make such a difference in helping students reinforce skills they are learning. Parents can help by listening to students and asking questions about the story. Students are also encouraged to read short stories more than once…..read to mom or dad, then read to a brother or sister, dog or cat!

Mrs. Hower

This month in Music, the classes have begun working on their pieces for the Winter Concert. Primary classes are learning to swing and jive dance. We have some drama with the N/Ks and more fun dancing. The Grade 3s will wow everyone with their singing and dancing. Grade 4s are working on a colourful, rhythmic presentation. Grade 5s are practicing their recorders and Grade 6s are learning tone chimes and handbells. Beginner Bells continue to practice on Day 2, Intermediate on Day 4 and the Ensemble is also practicing on Day 6s at noon as well as certain Thursdays after school.

Mrs. Bodner

I n French this month, Grade 4s are working on numbers to 100, creating art and sharing it with friends. Grade 5s are working on a book about the seasons, weather and clothing. The Grade 6s have chosen TUSC jobs and we will have a meeting in December where they will make presentations or videos on a range of topics.

Mrs. Bodner

C ongratulations to MJ, the patrol of the month for November. MJ is an outstanding patrol who is always willing to help out. Keep up the great work!

Serve, Bump, Volley and Spike! Lots of volleyball was happening throughout November and December! Grade 5 tournament takes place December 6th at Sargent Park School and the grade 6 tournament takes place at Sister MacNamara School on December 11th. Thanks so much to all my coaches: Mrs. Reis, Mrs. Schultz and Mrs. Webster! We couldn’t do it without you! In December, students are going to start playing floor hockey and spongee polo games. What a great introduction to one of Canada’s national sports!

Remember that even during the winter, your children need 45 minutes a day of exercise to keep their bodies and minds healthy and happy! Keep them moving!

Mr. Sharp

T his month we will be sending home Cash for Christmas raffle tickets with the students. They sell for $2 each and there are cash prizes of $400, $300, $200 and $100. The draw will be made at the end of the Winter Concert at Sargent Park School on December 19th. There are also cash prizes of $25 awarded to the students who sell the winning tickets and prizes for the top 3 sellers.
