FROM THE PRESIDENT

As most of you already know Friday evening,

December 2nd, a ire broke out at the Kirksville Arts Center. At this time we do not know the cause of the ire and it is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall's ofice. We are thankful no one was in the building at the time of the

ire and no one was injured. The action taken by the irst responders was tremendous. "Thank you" does not begin

to express the appreciation we have for the ireman, ambulance crew and law enforcement oficials who worked tirelessly through the cold night and throughout the next

day to bring the lames under control and prevented them from spreading to our neighboring buildings. The Kirksville,

LaPlata, Greentop, Schuyler County and Rural Adair

County Fire Departments, the Adair County Ambulance

District, Kirksville Police Department and Adair County

Sheriff's Department did an outstanding job.

An exhibit by the Hands of Friendship Quilt Guild had

just opened that week in the gallery. We truly appreciate

the efforts by the Kirksville Fire Department to remove the

quilts from the building. We deeply regret any damage to

the quilts, we realize the importance of these handmade

works of art. They were all either family heirlooms or future

family heirlooms.

It appears that the Legacy Mosaic Tile Mural on the front

of the building was not damaged and when possible we

will remove them from the building. Many members of the

community made tiles for the mural and we intend to again

have them on display.

In the near future the Kirksville Arts Association will

begin planning for how we move forward. We are

committed to serving the Kirksville area with a community

arts program. The programs we are involved with in the

community such as Invitation to the Arts at Ray Miller,

Summer on the Square and Red Barn Arts and Crafts

Festival will continue. Ed Campbell has graciously offered

to give us temporary ofice space, so we will be back in business as soon as possible. Earlier this fall, Kirksville Arts

was awarded a grant from the Missouri Arts Council to

develop a strategic plan. This planning process will now

take on a larger meaning as begin to plan for our future.

We appreciate all the concern and offers of support from

the community and it is truly humbling. We promise we will

again provide art programming to Kirksville.

ART-OBERFEST 2016 The fourth annual ARToberfest was held October 22,

4:00-7:00 pm at the Arts Center. Seven local vendors and

one from Macon and Hermann, Missouri offered beer and

wine samples which were enjoyed by all in attendance.

Good food, especially Nancy Burn's tasty tidbits and

HyVee's specialty brats were offered while great

conversation rounded out the event. A special "thanks" to

Lex Towns, who chaired the event.

Looking forward to ARToberfest 2017!

WEEKEND OF WEAVING

GREAT SUCCESS

Beautiful baskets being woven,

wonderful companionship among the

weavers and another successful Weekend

of Weaving happened at the Arts Center on

November 4th and 5th.

This was the ifth consecutive year for this event and the interest among the participants

is still high. The instructors for WOW 2016

were Pat Moore, Mary Jerome and Linda

Colton. They presented instruction for their

students on some unique and useful baskets,

with many of the weavers being returnees

and a few new ones sprinkled in among the

classes. The number of participants on both

Friday and Saturday was about 25 for

each day.

A big thanks goes out to Linda Treasure

and Judy Neuweg who helped coordinate the

event along with support from Linda Colton.

Many others, including Nettie Carpenter,

Sharon Pritchard, Karen Mayhew, Janet

Hawkins, Steve Treasure and Artis Ball

contributed food and time for this annual

event and it was truly appreciated.

Wayne L. Blackman and Mary Nay present Janie Theobald, KAA board member, with a $1000 grant from the US Bank of Foundation.

VOLUNTEER OF THE QUARTER

of 2003. Mari volunteers as a docent at the

Arts Center on most Saturdays when it is

dificult to cover the gallery hours. Her son, Alex, has also been known to either docent

by himself or with his mom. Family service to

community is important to Mari and her

interest and support of the arts is greatly

appreciated. Hats off to Mari!

THE MISSOURI FOLKLORE

SOCIETY EXHIBIT.

The Kirksville Arts Association

cooperated with the Missouri

Folklore Society and 32 Missouri

art collectors/artists in creating a

November-long exhibit titled

“Celebrating Missouri's Diverse

Folk.” The exhibit featured arts

from newer African and Latino

immigrants, along with works from

more established European-heritage

cultures, plus the Missouri Human-

ities Council's Sac and Fox Indian

exhibit. From hand-stamped adinkra

to hand-made zither, the exhibit

foregrounded arts which all cultures

practice as they feed, clothe, and

entertain themselves. A 1930s oil

painting depicted sorghum-

making; a Congolese sawdust

painting showed villagers pounding

yams. A papier-mache mask from

Puerto Rico contrasted one carved

of ebony in Senegal. Wood carvings

ranged from small masks to

adult-sized rocking horses.

Digitized 19th century photographs

shared exhibit space with an

enormous new digital painting.

FALL, 2016 INVITATION TO THE ARTS

On November 16th, all the classes at Ray

Miller Elementary School held an Art Show

for the community in which each student was

able to display several pieces of his/her work.

The students took turns standing by their

class's project and explaining the procedures

they used.

Six teachers offered Painting, String Art, Cro-

chet, Flower Painting, Origami and Sculpture.

Nichole Conner taught about famous artists

and experimented with "their style' using

leaves to make "stained glass." Beverly Winn

offered "String Art" and had her students

make a variety of abstract patterns on poster

board using several colors and techniques.

Boys and girls who had never crocheted be-

fore were taught by Tara Tharp and crocheted

scarves, squares, and necklaces. They also

joined Dr. Botano's "granny squares" to make

an afghan. In the "Flower Painting" class,

teacher Ashley Melvin taught students to paint

a single lower on a mini canvas as well as make a hand-print lower. One of the teach-

ers, Jill Huwe, wanted to learn the craft of

"Origami" and the students were able to use

real origami paper making a variety of igures and writing explanations about them. Final-

ly, Rachel Hix had students explore various

sculpture techniques from using panty hose

in small abstract sculptures to making life-size

igures using packing tape.
