Dear Members: As the Holiday Season is upon us and the year is winding to an end, it is a good time for reflection of all that has been accomplished as well as to look forward to the New Year and the potential of the opportunities ahead. I want to thank you all for the continued support, gracious welcome and ongoing feedback of your experiences at the club. I have received several “Hey Garry” cards that have offered suggestions to improve or enhance those experiences. I am encouraged by the cards received that have been utilized to recognize enjoyable experiences as well. We introduced a new menu in mid-November and have received favorable feedback. We also received additional suggestions and have acted on those. We have added a vegetarian appetizer and entrée to the menu as well as a Garden and Turkey Burger… There are several Member Events throughout the month of December to celebrate the season with friends and family: December 16 – Member Holiday Party 6pm - 7pm December 20 – Brunch with Santa 8pm - 10:30pm December 23 – Candlelight Dinner 5pm - 8pm December 31 – New Year’s Eve Dinner 7 – 10 - MDR December 31 – New Year’s Eve Dance and DJ 10pm – 1am- Pub I am looking forward to ringing in the New Year with several of you at the club. We will serve passed hor d’ouvrés, followed by a three course meal featuring Filet and Lobster. There will be a piano player, party favors and a glass of champagne at 10pm. The cost of the evening is $50.00 and includes access to the Pub for the “after party”. If you already have dinner plans and want to stop by the club for a little dancing, light snacks and a DJ, please join us in the Pub from 10pm – 1am. The cost for the Pub Only event is $10.00. Flyers and more detailed information will be sent along later in the week. For those of you that want to start your New Year’s get healthy resolutions early – there are several ways you can do so at the club. Pickleball Leagues are forming beginning Thursday, December 4th. We will also have drop in activity on Tuesday evenings at 6pm beginning December 9. Please contact Matej or click the link for further details. We are also providing the venue on December 17 at 6:15pm for “Hungry for Change” which is a video documentary hosted by PHCC Member Laura Smart. Please call 425-233-9082 for more details. In closing, I want to wish all of you a very healthy, happy and prosperous Holiday Season. I’d encourage you to stop by the club if only to look at the beautiful decorations and lights. A special thanks to Bob Logefeil for his talents and time to help create the ambiance. Regards, Garry

Looking for A Few Good Members
We also have a great need for member involvement in the capacity of a social/membership committee. We are seeking volunteers to serve as our Picacho Ambassadors. These very special Members will assist the Club in i n t r o d u c i n g a n d mentoring our new Members and hosting our invitees considering membership. This will not be a staunch and regimented committee, rather a fun, active and social one. If anyone is interested in serving, please do not hesitate to call me or send an email to indicate you are willing to have a blast.

Concerning the Advisory Board Well, this is it, December, the dénouement of the year. As our little bubble of life hurtles through space at over 67,000 miles an hour towards the cold dark abyss of the shortest day, we prepare to celebrate the tail end of the year as a happy ending to the story that was 2014. Many of us will celebrate Christmas, others will celebrate Hanukkah. There are those that will celebrate Kwanzaa. A few may celebrate Yalda and others the Winter Solstice. Seinfeld fans may celebrate Festivus. Personally, being an equal opportunity party animal, wine lover and Club booster, my suggestion is that we celebrate all of these holidays and do so by grabbing a whole squadron of friends to have dinner and drinks at the club.
To further fill out your opportunities for celebration at the Club, I offer some of my other favorite December holidays, to wit: 12-6 is St. Nick’s Day, which comes on the heels of Bathtub Party Day (woo-hoo); 12-9 is Weary Willie Day (no comment); Cat Herders Day on 12-15 has special meaning to those of us who have tried to organize any athletic or social events; fly high in celebration of the Wright Brothers on 12-17 and don’t fail to party on Phileas Fogg Win a Wager Day on 12-21. And, who could fail to go gaga over National Bacon Day on 12-30. Finally, the big daddy party day, NEW YEARS EVE, on you know what day! By the way, the club has got a blast of an evening planned for New Year’s Eve!! See details in this Newsletter.
The old saying is that it is better to give than to receive. And this is the season for gift giving. Of course, if I had it in my power, the gifts that I most would like to give are peace and prosperity to all, health and happiness for everyone, patience and tolerance by all and goodwill as the basis of all human intercourse. Alas, I don’t think I have the proper ribbons and paper to wrap up that package and place it under the tree.
But I will do my part by supporting some local charities, gifting some needy children on the Angel Tree at the Club, and bringing in new unwrapped toys to support Toys for Tots. I will try to spend time with friends and family to warm and strengthen our human bonds and I will smile at strangers to make them feel welcome. Bell ringing Santas will be happy to see me coming at the local shopping mall. In short, we all just need to be creative and on the lookout for opportunities to make this world a little bit better. If we all just give of ourselves, and there are millions of us, think of how powerful that cumulative gift will be.
Importantly, please keep the club at the center of your social life throughout the holiday season and take advantage of the restaurant to free up your time for more important things like Christmas shopping (especially if you are shopping for me!). [I keep repeating this line, about shopping for me, but don’t seem to be getting much traction.] And, do promote the Club to your non-member neighbors: Let them know you want them to be part of your social world.

Golf Pro Note
Happy December,
The month of November is now behind us and December is once again here! We held the annual Club Championship and Sweet and Sour tournaments and we really appreciate everybody who participated in these events. We want to remind you that we still have the M.G.A Par 3 Challenge on December 5th and the Christmas Surprise on December 13th. Although the Par 3 challenge is an M.G.A. event, they are opening up the tournament to all members of Picacho Hills Country Club. Every hole will play as a Par 3 and it is a really fun way to play the golf course. We hope to see you all there!
As anticipated, the frost delay season is upon us. We have already had quite a few delays, and we anticipate more to come throughout the season. Thank you for all of the cooperation as we really appreciate your understanding the need to protect your golf course! If you have not done so already, please feel free to pick up a copy of our frost delay policy from the golf shop if you have any questions about our procedures.
We wanted to remind you once again that the Proshop is full of a lot of great merchandise. We have plenty of great apparel and considering we are in the Christmas season we are going to extend the 20% discount through the month of December. This discount will extend to anything in stock including golf clubs! We are moving into the New Year and we will be getting new equipment soon, however, it is also a great time to get some great deals on the older equipment as well. Please take advantage as the sale will be over after December 31st.
With the New Year approaching we are also finalizing the tournament schedule for 2015. Now is the time to suggest or add any new tournament ideas moving into the new season. I am always looking for ideas to spice up our events and ideally we would like to add some new events moving forward. You can call the Proshop or email me directly at [email protected]. Thank you ahead of time and I look forward to hearing from you!
Thank you and have Happy Holidays from the Golf Department,

TJ’s Tips
Bring on the Winter
One of the toughest things about the winter months is the limited amount of time for practice. So I intend on showing some of the best ways to get the job done while the weather is too terrible to practice.
The Broom Trick- Try swinging a broom at home it helps work on your tempo as well as giving you a chance to work on the release of the club.
Yardstick Putting- When I am at home I always try to putt down a metal yard stick. This drill helps me concentrate on rolling the ball down my line.
Mirror work- I like to setup a mirror behind me and take slow motion swings. To see how well I am hitting certain positions in my swing.
Tile Putting- I like to putt using the line on the tile to help make sure I am bringing the putter slightly inside when I putt and I also like to putt on tile to get a feel for lightning fast greens.
Hope these tips help!!!!

Greetings Members,
Colder weather has arrived and the chance of frost delaying your early morning tee time is becoming more common. Updates are given to the Golf Pro, General Manager and Pro Shop staff starting at 6:30 AM daily. Updates continue every half hour until a firm start time is established. Information on delays and start times can be found on the PHCC website, Twitter and on Facebook. I also recommend viewing a video that was posted last week by the General Manager from the USGA on reasoning behind frost delays.
Current Golf Grounds projects:
-Clean up of desert native areas. This will be followed up with pre-emergent herbicides to limit the growth of new weeds.
-Yardage marker painting, repositioning and replacing. -Mapping the golf course and identify typical trouble areas associated with
fungal patterns, thatch areas, heavier Bermuda areas and dry or wet areas. This has allowed us to utilize our resources to the fullest potential.
*Winter Planting Tip: Out with the old and in with the new.
As seasons change so do many of the plants we have around our homes and club. During the colder months, winter annuals such as pansies and violas accompanied with ornamental cabbage or kale add wonderful color to our outdoor beds and pots while braving the frigid temperatures. Easy and inexpensive to maintain this option provides stunning eye popping color.
Always Greenside Up,
Gil Martinez, GCSAA (A)

Sandpipers
The Picacho Hills Country Club
“Sandpiper Nine” is a group of ladies
who play nine holes of golf twice a
week. Our organization would like to
encourage ladies who want to only
play nine holes to consider joining this
fun group. We follow PHCC and USGA
rules, such as maintaining pace of play
and fixing our divots and ball marks.
We play on Tuesday and Thursday morn-
ing on a time schedule that changes
seasonally, generally between the
hours of eight and nine thirty. We alter-
nate different formats each week. On
Tuesdays, we like to play regular golf.
However, on Thursdays we usually have
organized games between teams of
players, using our handicaps. Our games
are casual and if you choose not to
maintain a handicap, you are welcome to
play along with us. You simply will need
to elect not to play the organized
game.
After playing golf with the group three
times, we will encourage you to offi-
cially join the “sandpiper” roster. We
have no annual dues and we are all
here just to have fun. After the round,
we gather at the Club Lounge for a
discounted lunch following Thurs-
day’s game. Attendance for the lunch-
eon is optional.
If this sounds like what you are looking
for, then we would love to have you
join our nine hole group. For addi-
tional information, please contact:

Very exciting November is behind us. The 16th Annual Battle of the Clubs was very successful this year with just under 100 players who competed in 3 NTRP divisions. I would like to congratulate over 30 players who represented PHCC including the winning team captained by Michael Henderson. Dinner at the club was also excellent. Exceptional food and service, and great door prizes and raffle prizes made everyone happy. I would like to thank all the players, sponsors, and volunteers who made another great tournament that over the years became something that is PHCC known for among tennis players is USTA Southwest Section.
I am very proud that most of the active members who play tennis are also participating in various team competitions and having tremendous results. The 18 under Junior Tennis team took fifth place at the national tournament in South Carolina. I would like to congratulate our members Maddie Andersson, Kelli Duran and Molly Olson for such a great accomplishment.
In December we will keep all of our regular activities except cardio tennis, since it is too cold at 7AM.
December Schedule:
Monday: 8:30 AM Men’s Drop In Wednesday: 9:00 AM Ladies’ Drop In Thursday: 4:30 PM 10&under Clinic, 6:30 PM Men’s League Friday: 8:30 AM Men’s Drop in, 9:00 AM Ladies Drop In Saturday: 9:00 AM Adult Development, 10:00 PM Drop in Mixed Doubles Sunday: 3:00 PM Mixed Doubles League Once again, thank you for all your support. We are looking forward to see you at the tennis courts, whether you are taking a lesson, attending clinics and drop-ins, or practicing with the ball machine. Matej Stakne

Tennis & Fitness
Jazzercise Indoor classes are in full swing from now until the end of May under the enthusiastic leadership of certified instructor Dianne Sage. Unfortunately some of our former members have moved away, but fortunately we now have space to welcome several newcomers. Jazzercise Lite consists of a cardio workout with light aero-bics, weight training and stretching, and can be modified to meet all levels of fitness or special needs, so please come and try out a class to see how it can work for you. There is no jumping and chairs can also be used during the workout to protect the joints. Classes are held each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:00 and 9:00, with a few exceptions. The weeks of Oct. 6th, Nov. 24th, Dec. 22nd and 29th both classes will be combined at 8:30. All members of PHCC are invited and encouraged to attend and we look forward to welcoming new participants. Please call Marti (523-0262) or Cindy (526-1716) for more information.
