December 2013

Dear 4-H Members and Friends,

“Giving back to an organization that gives you so much.” What does this statement mean to you? We are all probably involved in many different organizations (church, sports, schools, etc.) One thing that we all have in common is that we are involved in Kenosha County 4-H.

What have you received from your participation in 4-H? Have you had the opportunity to be around caring adults, learned a new skill from an adult or youth leader, participated in 4-H camp, gone on a 4-H club trip, learned how to improve your projects at the county fair, or learned important life skills through 4-H? Hopefully you’ve grown as an individual and can think of something you have received because of 4-H.

Now, what have you given back to Kenosha County 4-H? I’m not talking about money; I’m talking about commitment, participation and enthusiasm. Many of our 4-H clubs have completed a “To Make the Best Better” activity. In almost all of the clubs that have completed this activity, one of the outcomes has been a desire to increase participation in their 4-H club.

FPlease consider volunteering for a task the next time your club officer or club leader asks for help. It’s nice to be personally asked to help, but sometimes that is not possible. Consider just coming forth and volunteering. We have many opportunities for you to do that in the clubs or in the county level. Just think what we could accomplish if every one of our 300+ Kenosha County 4-H families volunteered to help with just one club activity and county activity every year!

Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

Club Minutes

Bristol Challenge

December holds great things for Bristol Challenge.

Through the work of members completing paperwork, presenting to the Youth as Resources (YAR) board, and then purchasing fabric, we will be able to make blankets for the homeless shelters with grant moneys received. We received $260!

Here are upcoming dates for our club:

Tuesday, December 3, we will meet at the Chapel for our monthly meeting. We will host a food drive for the community, and also exchange $1 gifts among the club members. The $1 gift should work for girls or boys and not have any nuts. We will hear demonstrations from photography and from cake decorating members.

Saturday, December 7, Donna Zarovy will share food decorating secrets. Bring $3 to offset her supplies and bring home goodies! Mrs. Zarovy will begin at 10 am at the Chapel.

Saturday, December 7, at that same time as the cookie decorating, those not working with food are asked to help cut fleece purchased with our YAR grant money. Many hands make light work! The cut fabric will be tied in January.

Monday, December 30, 3 pm, bowling at Old Settlers' Lanes in Union Grove. The lanes are on Hwy 11, west of Hwy 45. Ninety minutes of bowling, shoe rental, and pizza after the bowling costs just $9. Any members who bring three non-perishable items can lower their bowling cost to $6. We will pay the difference through club treasury, as we decided through a vote at our October meeting.

So....Tuesday meeting with gift exchange, Saturday with cutting or with food, Monday bowling. So much fun in December for our group!

Happiness and contentment this month,

Priscilla Kopczynski and Regina LaForge 857-7707 847-395-2044

Bristol Strivers

A big thank you! To the Foerster family, for hosting the Fall Fun fest at their farm.

There is a Cloverbuds group project that was completed with the help of youth members Paige and Payton along with Mrs. Walkington and Mrs. Millhouse.

On-line registration was discussed and dues collected tonight.

Member’s records books were returned to the members. The awards will be given next month since the leader did not get to the office in time to hand out this month.

Bristol Striver’s Club scrapbook. Angie asked for a parent volunteer to oversee the group has a scrapbook completed for this coming years fair. Mrs. Millhouse, and Mrs. Sweeney volunteered. She will oversee some of the youth members from the group to assure we have it completed in time.

Angie talked about the two children that our group will be sponsoring for the Sharing Center this year. We have asked that 4-6 families help with both the boy and girl to assure we can make this holiday special for them.

Thank you to all of those who brought in gently used winter coats, sweaters, snow boots and school supply items to be given to the sharing center.

Goals and adult led volunteers were requested to run the Jan and Feb meetings.

Everyone agreed that ringing bells for Salvation Army would be another great community Service Project. Angie will be checking for dates in December.

December’s meeting will be short so we can share holiday treats, and decorate our annual candy cane reindeers to give to the Senior Center.

Home Lite dates were reviewed as well as Cloverbuds and Leadership dates were given.

Angie Nelson, General Leader

Dog Project

The end of the year banquet was on November 4th.

Here is a short recap of what we did that night.

We recognized our Leaders who headed the project and Junior Leaders who helped throughout the year. Thank you for making this year a big success.

We had a three way tie this year for the “Above and Beyond Award”. Congratulations to Paxton, Christy and Haleigh. You all did a fantastic job.

A big fair well goes out to Haleigh P who graduated from 4-H. We will miss her very much, but we all hope she comes back as a leader next year.

We had many CGC (Canine Good Citizen) award recipients. Great job for making it through your first year.

There were many other awards that were given out and more people recognized. You all did an outstanding job.

Many things went big at the Auction as we all gathered around to see what we could buy with our doggie dollars. There were a range of options to choose from including gift cards, mystery boxes and even a very comfy chair. It was a blast for all who were able to attend.

The 2014 year starts in January. Please watch your emails and Home Lite for information.

Congratulations to all who completed this year and hope to have you back next year.

Foods Project The Foods Project will be meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of December (11th) 7pm at

Central High School. Hope you can join us.

Raina Hodgson Cell 847 912-1031

Fishing Project The November meeting was well attended. Lot of important things were discussed about leadership and the raffle. We would like to thank Melanie Hartnek for stepping up and becoming our new treasurer. We would also like to thank those who volunteered to help us this year. Grace one of our junior leaders did a fantastic job of teaching the kids Ice Fishing

101. All those who attended the meeting received an ice fishing hand out.

There will be a board meeting December 12th at the KCC @ 6:00PM.

Please note the following changes.

The ice fishing outing planned on Paddock Lake Saturday January 11th, 2014, has been changed to KD Park pond in New Munster. The park is located on Hwy KD south of Hwy 50. This is a kids’ derby only put on by the Kenosha County Parks Department. The kids will receive a prize for fish caught, and/or participation. Time of fishing will be coming soon.

Thursday January 9th there is an adult only meeting at the KCC @ 6:30PM Room A. This is a very important meeting as this will be to plan and sign up for the raffle. All parents are required to help out with the raffle in some way. As of this Home Lite, the raffle date has not yet been confirmed. We have been unable to contact the Conservation Club. As soon as we have a date we will be sending out a e-mail to let everyone know.

The Lake Delavan outing in June is scheduled for Saturday June 14th. Please note that this is a change from our original schedule.

All members please be sure that you are receiving e-mails. If you are not receiving e-mails please contact us. Ice fishing is approaching, e-mails will be sent out for ice and weather conditions, what lakes are producing fish, what bait is being used, etc.

For new members: If you have not attended any meetings there is a lot going on in the project that we are not able to put in the Home Lite. There is a schedule and handbook that every family needs to help them understand what the project is all about.

Thanks

Horse Project

Sponsors and deadlines and parent points, OH MY! It’s a new project year, therefore, an entirely new set of deadlines and requirements to meet. But no worries, we’ve got your back.

For one, always read your Home Lite Newsletter. The Home Lite will have helpful reminders and dates that will guide you throughout the project year. You can also ask a board

member if you have any questions or contact Kim Springer who is the “New Member Liaison”. If you need extra forms, the Kenosha County 4-H website has them at http://kenosha.uwex.edu/4-h/horse-program. You will also find all handouts, the Horse Project book, show bills and the attendance record there as well.

In order to be in the 4-H Horse PROJECT, you need to be enrolled as a member of a 4-H CLUB (if you haven’t already, you may enroll at http://kenosha.uwex.edu/4-h/4-h-on-line/ ) 4-H Clubs meet throughout all of Kenosha and Kenosha County and have their own set of requirements that vary between each CLUB. From

Page 5: December 2013 Home Lite - Kenosha County - University of

Volume 41, Issue #11 November 2013 – Page 5

your CLUB you can join a PROJECT (this is where the 4-H Horse Project, Horseless Horse Project and Model Horse Project come in).

As a Horse Project member you will need to attend a minimum of 5 Horse-Project meetings. A combination of mini-camp, clinics and Countywide Meetings can be utilized to meet the requirement; however, three of the meetings MUST be the actual Countywide Meetings (held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at Central High School). If you would also like to join the Horseless Horse Project, you will need to attend a minimum of 6 of the Horseless Horse Meetings (this is in addition to the minimum of 5 Horse Project meetings). You need to be a member of the Horse Project in order to be a member of the Horseless Horse Project. Karen Zieman is the chairperson for the Horseless Horse Project.

You may also join the Model Horse Project. Charlene Karls is the chairperson and she will be setting up meeting dates and a model horse show for you too. Meeting requirements are set up for your benefit. Meeting requirements may seem overwhelming, but they have been set up to make your learning experience fun and educational. The meetings are held to keep you informed of upcoming show dates, clinics, workouts, deadlines, updates and used as an educational forum. Feel free to ask a member who has been in any of the Horse Projects how they have benefited from the meetings and how they “work out” the busy schedule.

With that in mind, here are a few dates and deadlines to remember:

Next Countywide Meeting is January 15th at Central High School 7 PM (no Countywide Meeting in December). We ask that each project member bring a movie themed or dog themed item to the January 15th meeting to donate to the silent auction baskets for the Tack Sale. Money raised at the tack sale will benefit the project as a whole.

• Horseless Horse Meeting on January 10th Central High School at 7 PM

• January 26th from 9 AM – 1 PM Tack Sale at Wilmot High School (volunteers needed)

• Model Horse Meeting at 6:30 PM before the February 19th Countywide Meeting at Central High School

• May 10th and 11th are the schedule Mini-Camp dates

• Pleasure Show Series Dates: May 18th, June 8th July 20th (rain-date) and August 3rd

• Pre-Fair is July 12th

• Gymkhana Show Series Dates: June 14th, July 19th and August 23

• March 21 – 23: AYHC Syposium in Minneapolis

• June 27-29: Hunter/Jumper-Dressage in Sheboygan
