This is the season of peace, which is the eternal quest. It

is what we want. It is what we prayfor; but, it eludes us. In the darkdays of WWII the commander ofthe British forces, Field MarshalMontgomery said, “The greatestsingle factor in the world isstrength, religious strength, moralstrength, economic strength, mili-tary strength. It is strength thatmakes for peace.”

This holiday season speaks pri-marily of peace. So, what is it thatwe are all talking about? Is peacethe prize of all virtues? Is it onlythe absence of war? Is it some-thing given after everyone haswhat they want? If we escape theturmoil of terrorism, will life bemore peaceful?

My philosophy comes from theBible, which says that peace is aby-product of righteousness. Inother words, something else mustfirst come before peace. There ispeace where there is harmony. There is peace where there is jus-

tice. There is peace where there ishonesty and truth and equity andrespect.

It would be foolish to thinkthere can be peace if people proveto be untrustworthy and pertina-cious. It is right that we shouldpray for peace, but it is a delusionto believe peace will come whenhumanity does not take the neces-sary steps to straighten itself out.“Love thy neighbor as thyself” arethe words of Biblical wisdom. Ifwe cannot be at peace with our-selves, we cannot be at peace withone another.

To those of a Christian mind,Christ is the Prince of Peace. Tothose of a Jewish culture peace isinherent in all the prophets pro-claim: “For a child is born for us, aSon is given to us…. Wonderful,Counselor, Mighty God, Everlast-ing Father, Prince of Peace.” There-fore, “Depart from evil, and dogood, seek peace and pursue it.”

Season’s greetings to all.

I take my subject this month froma long-time Mason in Minnesota,

Neil Neddermeyer, actually he isa Past Grand Master of the GrandLodge of Minnesota. I have been asubscriber of his Cinosam emailnewsletter for several years.

In his last newsletter he de-scribes his journey through themysteries of Freemasonry. He con-cludes: “The real reason for us toprosper is brotherhood. The gluethat binds us together consists oftwo things. The first is the factthat we investigate each applicantas to integrity with no other judg-ments. The second is our obliga-tions in the 3rd degree and withthose obligations of the five pointsthat obligate us to each other. These allow us to instantly trusteach other and bring us together. I

believe that this trust makes usbetter men if only through the con-cept of ‘group think’.

I'm convinced that our ritual, our charities, our histories andour philosophies help us bind our-selves together, but they fall shortof being the true answer. Whatreally matters is that we meet withother Brothers who we can trulytrust because of every Brother'spromises.”

I often wonder what keeps someof our Brothers paying dues, whena lot of them do not particate inthe regular acitivity of our lodges,I agree with our MW BrotherNeddermeyer—Brotherhood!

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

It has truly been an honor serving the nobility of Sahib Shriners as your Potentatethis year. There are many happy memories that will last forever.

Our Casino Night last month was a very successful activity. The nobles and ladiesenjoyed themselves and hopefully we can do it again next year. Noble Fred Phillips, and his committee, worked hard to get prizes and train people to run the games. It isnot an easy task to remember all the odds in roulette or craps. Black jack and pokerwere fun, with the dealers keeping everybody thinking about what to do next. Ourthanks to the Oriental Band for the use of their equipment and support.

This month is a season of Christmas parties and some installations of new officers forclubs and units for 2013.

Our Shrine elections are December 5. These elections are so very important as youwill be electing future Potentates. Also, there are openings on the C.A.A.R.F. Trustand Operating Trust. Our current Recorder Past Potentate Oscar Cloutier hasindicated that he will not seek that office and two nobles have submitted theirresumes.

Our Ceremonial is November 30 and December 1. Come join in welcoming these newnobles of the Mystic Shrine. Membership is an ongoing activity. It is a yearlongactivity. Other than the Shriners Hospitals for Children, membership is a priority.Without membership, there is no Shrine, and if there is no Shrine, our children couldnot be served.

We always look forward to the Ladies Holiday luncheon and another outstandingperformance from the students of Booker High School of Performing Arts. Thestudents are an inspiration that the next generation is ready to take on the future. They are coming to Sahib on Thursday, December 13.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, enjoy the holidays with fun and fellowshipwith your fellow nobles and their ladies. Our Unit and Club Christmas party isTuesday December 18. Come and join us if you can.

Yours in the Faith,

Charles M. Levan, 33°, Potentate

I want to wish a very Merry Christmas and a HappyNew Year and holiday season, to all of you dedi-

cated nobles. In addition, to all our officers-elect Iwish the very best. You are dedicating your life to agreat cause, Shriners Hospital for Children. Keep inmind “We Put Children First.” With your help,Sahib Shriners will continue to be the great fraternaltemple that it has always been.

I want to sincerely thank you for giving me yoursupport and cooperation during the last 11 years. Ithoroughly enjoyed every minute of my service to

Sahib Shriners. I certainly will miss all the dailyinteractions that take place at Sahib when you aredeeply involved in daily activities.

I am looking forward to assisting as Co-Chairmanof the 2013 Sahib Shrine Circus. This will keep meinvolved at Sahib.

It’s time for me get back to playing golf!!Yours in the faith.

Chief Rabban’s notesby Bill Zurlo, [email protected]

I have been very fortunate in my life to have somany friends from so many paths of life; and so

many people that consider me a friend. I want tothank all who have sent cards, called, visited andkept me in their prayers. All have said they would dowhatever they could and all that I have asked forspecific favors have responded.

On a personal level, I’d like to let you know thatVince and Dolly Flow have been most responsive.Cub Dickerson has certainly stepped forward anddone many things for me beyond those duties of beingmy Chief Aide. His, and Dolores’, personal assis-tance are much appreciated.

I don’t want to be accused of favoritism in that“all” I have talked to have offered help and got thejobs done. Certainly, members of the Divan and theSahib office have been most helpful in assisting andpicking up the slack where needed. I love all thenobles and their wives for all they have done. Fortu-nately, much of the work for 2013 has already been

done and we were just “Cleaning Up.” This is as itshould be.

One of my favorite events has been the ChristmasParty for Sahib Shrine Children which this year isSaturday, December 8. I’m sure Jesus Cabalo hasheld up his end by organizing all of those attending.Noble Charles Hamilton and his Lady Mary Janehave done a terrific job of overseeing and running theshow. Thank you! Thank you!

During the Christmas Party, the Aides will beunder the guidance of Chief Aide Bud Glidden. TheOriental Band, Clowns and Santa Claus will all con-tribute to the festivities. In addition, my Lady StaceyLee and all of the other Divan ladies will be there tohelp out and participate where they can.

Unfortunately, I cannot move my left leg in anyway that would allow me to type on a computer, so Ihave had to ask my Chief Aide to help me get thismessage out. Thank you!

Seasons Greetings to all! No, this is not Christmasin July, it really is December. Where oh where

did this year go? The month of December is probablythe busiest of the year for many of us. With it startingwith our Ceremonial and all those holiday partiesand parades.

Wendy and I will be especially busy preparing forthe East/West Game. I have been appointed as Trans-portation Manager and Wendy has been added to theE/W office staff and will be organizing transporta-tion for the players coming to town. Plus, with allthis going on, we will still put together the best darntailgate party in all of East/West Shrine Game his-tory! We are hoping on five busloads of fans. Makesure to get your tickets packages so you can be a partof the fourth annual Sahib Shrine Game Trip.

On December 5, we will have our Stated Meetingwith Election of Officers. There will be some veryimportant positions that need to be filled, so make surethis date is marked on your calendars. This year hasbeen very rewarding for me as your Assistant Rabban,my travels to other Shrines, Imperial Session, school-ing and my work at Imperial Headquarters. I lookforward to the coming years and hope if I can help withany projects for the good of the Shrine, count me in.

Wendy and I wish to extend Happy Holidays anda Prosperous New Year to all and their families.Keep the children of our Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren, our doctors and nurses in your prayers andthat all our service people are safe, that they mayhave a chance to be with their loved ones and familiesthis holiday season.

A Hillbilly Christmas PoemTwas the Night before Christmas,

and all through the shack. Not a creature was stirrin’,

cept the lice on muh back. The Skoal cans wuz nailed

to the screen door with care, with hopes that St. Nicholas

soon would be there. The children were sleepin’,

all snug in their beds,While visions of tractor pulls

danced in their heads. And Ma in her nightgown

all stained with pound cake.Had just settled down

to watch Ricki Lake. When out in the driveway,

He had a fat faceand a hairy beer belly.

I ain’t seen one that big since muh ex-wife Shelly.

He reached in his sack, sipped a gin and tonic,

Then filled the kid’s stockingswith Hooked on Phonics.

His toys came from Big Lotsand they weren’t very nice

But he had lots of themand yuh can’t beat the price.

When the presents were goneand he had no more,

He staggered and stumbledright through muh screen door.

He hopped in his truck,to his sheep gave an order

”Hurry up youins! To the Kentucky border!”

And I heard him cry out, with a strong southern drawl,

Shriners Hospitals for Children Helps Patients Overcome Adversity and Discover their Potential

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in pediatric spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation. The SCI rehabilitation programs, offered at three of our hospitals, provide comprehensive care that helps patients adapt to the changes in their lives and lead full, active and healthy lives. Meet three former patients with SCI whose experiences with the health care system have played a pivotal role in their personal and professional success.

Juan Gonzales - Making Big Strides in LifeGrowing up in Oakdale, Calif., Juan Gonzales was an up-and-coming bull rider. At age 15, Gonzalez sustained a spinal cord injury when he was thrown from a bull.

“I’ll never forget that day,” said Gonzales, who came to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California for care and rehabilitation. “Shriners Hospitals really got me on track and helped me see life in a new perspective,” said Gonzales.

As a student in the hospital’s school, Gonzales worked with the vocational resource specialist to identify suitable career paths, and decided to pursue counseling and psychology. He gained practical experience helping others by becoming a hospital volunteer.

In December 2011, Gonzales received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from California State University Stanislaus and hopes to be a counselor.

“I want to help young people know they can overcome challenges and find enjoyment in life,” said Gonzales.

Bill Bogdan - Former Patient Works to Improve Lives of People with DisabilitiesBill Bogdan, 41, was born with a neuroblastoma that left him with a SCI. He first came to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago at age 3.

“The hospital helped me become the person I am today,” said Bogdan, who, in addition to being successfully employed, is a husband, father and homeowner.

As a young man, Bogdan volunteered at his local township’s committee on disability while he was earning his associate’s degree. His accomplishments caught the attention of Chicago’s Mayor’s Office for

People with Disabilities, where Bogdan eventually became assistant to the director. In 1998 he became the disability liaison for the Secretary of State and in 2010 Bogdan was appointed chair of the Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities (ICDD) by the governor.

Bogdan is now a Shriner and hopes to become more active in the fraternity that founded and operates the health care system.

Micki Greenstein - Shriners Hospitals Helped Him Have a Positive Outlook on LifeWhen Micki Greenstein was 13 years old, he dove head-first into a shallow creek and was paralyzed. Greenstein was treated at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia.

“When I first came to Shriners Hospitals, I was depressed and didn’t want to do anything to improve,” said Greenstein. “The staff stuck by me and helped me realize that I had my whole life ahead of me.”

Now 34, Greenstein is a hardworking, motivated individual with a positive outlook on life. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Philadelphia Community College, Greenstein worked for several years in the nonprofit field. His passion is computers; he hopes one day to work in Web design or teach classes in computer skills.

These three stories clearly indicate the long-term impact Shriners Hospitals for Children has on its patients.

Great job to all who worked “Casino Nite and a“well done” to all who took shifts on November 16 and17 for Hospital Days.

The Greeters lost a Brother and a great friend onOctober 20; Dave Dickerson was called home by our

Great Creator. Dave who was also known as “Sarge,”was a gentle compassionate man. He served asGreeter president in 2000, and worked on manycommittees and projects at our temple. For over ayear, Dave battled several illnesses; he will be missed.

There are no birthdays for December. Happy Holi-days!

To date I have delivered over 400 flags to be retired toour new source. They are very grateful and will take allI can deliver. Remember: our Flag Retirement Pro-gram is now open to the public to bring in flags forretirement. So please spread the word and collectthose flags. I have arranged with Bingo Boss Man PastPotentate Don Vos to have them give out one free bingocard for each flag to be retired brought in by any player.A great win-win arrangement for the Legion of Honorand the general public bingo players.

This will be the last article I write for the monthlyLOH article in the Reporter. Too many restrictionshave been placed on me, for my liking, as to what Ihave to write about and what subjects I can andcannot write about; I wish the new editor well.

As of the first of November, and this writing, theLOH currently has 61 dues paying members. We haveinducted two new members this year but also havelost two members to the Black Camel. Nobles Bieserand Bohencamp have laid down their working tools.

The LOH now has (alive) one past FSA LOH Com-mander, one past MASA Commander, and one cur-rent FSA LOH 2LT Commander. FSA and FSA LOH

Greetings from the Mariners, it’s hard to believethe end of the year is almost here. I have enjoyed

being the commodore for 2012. The year has goneextremely fast and I feel I am just now getting the hangof things. I’m happy with what we have accomplishedthis year with many good times being had by all.

The Mariners have had another busy month start-ing with the Commodore’s Ball. What a great week-end. It all started on Thursday with our FSMYCAguests attending the Hillbilly dinner at the Shrine.Friday dinner was provided by the Sahib Marinerswith Jack Bryant’s famous finger licking baby backribs. Wow, he did it again, they were wonderful. Thanks to Jack and Marty and all other Mariners andmates that provided food and attended this wonder-ful evening. Saturday started with the FSMYCAmeeting at the hotel followed by boat races at anearby lake. Yes, real toy remote control boats withgrown men at the controls. There were nine boatswith each driver having his chance to lap the ever-changing course for the best time. There were timesfrom around 1½ minutes to 29 seconds with a secondrace to try to improve your time. The best timesrecorded was a boat owned by FSMYCA CommodoreKen Pedersen, pit crew Past Commodore FSMYCATom Hardin and driven by me. It wasn’t that we were

good it was that the other teams were bad. A trophywas presented at the ball.

Saturday evening was the Commodore’s Ball. Ev-erything was perfect and everyone had a great time.I want to thank Vice Commodore Mel Collins and hiscrew that decorated the hall, Past Commodore BudGlidden for being the emcee and Kim Jenkins forproviding my kind of music. A big thank you to thechef and staff for an excellent meal and everyone thatworked hard and all that attended to make this avery special night for Sara and me. The PastCommodore’s Picnic was attended by 46 Mariners, mates and friends. Everyone brought their favoritepicnic dish with our chefs, LaBell, Hardin, Dickersonand their helpers doing a great job with the brats, burgers and dogs. What a perfect day for a picnic, theweather couldn’t have been better. There was a 50/50drawing with $66 paid out to “Lucky” Assistant FleetCaptain Jon Neary. There was another drawing for aset of golf clubs donated by PC Bud Glidden andagain the winner was “Lucky” Jon Neary. It wasanother great party.

The year 2012 has come to its end. Much hashappened at our temple and all around us. We

must be very grateful and thank the Great Architectof the Universe to have spared the great State ofFlorida from the ravages of Hurricane Sandy. Ourhearts go out to all that have and will suffer from thistragedy. Americans are resilient and we will comeout of this.

A great big “Thank You” goes out to all of you thatcontributed in any way to the Unit Council’s

fundraising Casino “Fun” Night on 2 November. Theadvice and help of all on the committee and thosewho made that extra effort to make the event asuccess are greatly appreciated. The list of names istoo lengthy for this article but you know who you are.Let me just say that we could not have accomplishedwhat we did without each one of you. And a big“Thank You” to our units, clubs and Divan who camethrough with lots of support in the form of prizedonations, volunteer workers, players and encour-agement.

It was a fun evening and everyone seemed to enjoythemselves. It wasn’t quite like Las Vegas but we didhave a few “high rollers.” The admission price in-cluded a container of chips to be used at blackjack, craps, roulette, spin the wheel, and poker tableswhich were manned by volunteer workers from unitsand clubs. Players with the highest number of chipsat the end of the evening got to choose from the manyprizes contributed by units, clubs, nobles, membersof the divan and businesses. Surprisingly, the big-ticket prize of a weeks stay at a Georgia mountain

Unit Councilby Fred Phillips, Chairman, [email protected]

resort within easy driving time in late July 2013 wasnot taken until the fifth highest chip count.

Key to the success of this event was the OrientalBand’s contribution of their equipment and back-ground knowledge which they acquired by putting onsimilar events in the past. Unfortunately, they canno longer do such things alone. This brings up animportant point that was brought to the forefrontwhile planning the Casino Night and is well knownhere at Sahib. And that is the limited capability, inmost cases, of our units and clubs to sponsor orsupport activities on their own due to their aging, physical limitations and declining membership. Inthe case of the Casino Night, the Unit Council andcommittee members were able to coordinate the ef-forts of everyone. Although we did not make a lot ofmoney, we did learn a lot and I ’m surewe’ll have better results next time. We now knowthat we can accomplish a lot by pooling our resourcesand efforts. And that is important if we are to makemeaningful and worthwhile contributions to supportSahib, our Shriners Hospitals for Children and mostimportantly our kids.

Being on the Divan has beena great learning and an eye opening experience.Working with such a great group of Sahib nobles is apleasure. We always strive to make things better for

We have a great supporting staff of nobles going into line in January. We are looking forward to a great Veterans Saluteto the Armed Forces program headed up by theLegion Of Honor I am sure it was well received andattended, as it should be.

I am almost at a stand still at this writing. I don’thave anything more to add.

It has been a busy year and an interesting one. As aunit, the Divan has done much to make your dues

and fundraising dollars spread further. It has beenvery difficult, as our membership has declined, ashas our fundraising, while our needs for our thirty-year-old building continue to increase. This comingyear promises to be even more challenging. Of course, the Divan members of the line are expected to allmove up, and we will have a Recorder, OrientalGuide and Ceremonials who are new to the job. If youwill have me, I have informed our Chief Rabban Billthat I will serve another year as your treasurer andprovide the continuity from this year.

My wife and I have not been able to participate inthe many activities scheduled for the month of No-vember because we have been able to bring one of herlong time wishes to fruition. We traveled to Africafor over three weeks of observing the many animalsin their habitat. I am sure that when we return afterThanksgiving, we will have some fantabulous storiesfor you.

As we head into the holiday season of December, keep in mind the true meaning of the season and bethankful for the ability to help those less fortunatethan ourselves. Enjoy your families and be safe.

Bingo Reportby Don Vos PP, Bingo Chairman, [email protected]

Nobles, I appreciate all of you helping with ourBingo venture. The reports keep right on com-

ing with the good news and the funds that yourShrine needs.

In October, we honored Noble Jack Ivins, our veryown Mister Bingo. With all of his help and energy, including all of his emails to our Bingo players, hekeeps everyone up-to-date with our Bingo programs.Halloween was another good time for our players;they all came in very unique costumes, and kepteveryone entertained.

We gave Noble Jack a trip to Key West for twodays, and the boat trip from Fort Myers was in-cluded, all paid by for by your Bingo program.

Also, the sale of new Bingo shirts is off to a goodstart, and the costs are inexpensive.

Very important dates coming up for Bingo: Sahibwill be closed for Christmas on December 25, Bingowill be held on Wednesday, December 26. Thesame is true for New Years on January 1, Bingo willbe played on January 2.

Good day nobles, where has 2012 gone? Here it isDecember 1 and your club or unit’s planning for

“Hospital Days” in February is or should be well onthe way; sites selected, agreements signed with storemanagers and collection teams being set up. If thesethings haven’t been done; perhaps you should beasking why?

In the past “Hospital Days” has been held on theThursday, Friday and Saturday just prior to theNFL’s Super Bowl. This has been usually the firstweekend in February. This year it may be necessaryto expand our collection days from those mentionedabove to possibly the weekends of the whole month of

February. This possible change is due to the dwin-dling number of nobles and ladies that greet andcollect from the public at each individual site.

February 2012, saw a significant “turn around” asfar as the total of money collected compared to thelast couple of years. Funds raised during “HospitalDays” this year were in excess of $45,000. The goalfor 2013 is to exceed $55,000.

I ask each and every one of you to make a timecommitment to Sahib and more especially to ourkids and physically support this critical fundraiser.

Fraternal best wishes.

Seven-year-old Shriner Hospitals for ChildrenPatient Wins the Hearts of Shriners at Luncheon.

At the Shriners weekly luncheon on November 1 ourspecial guest speaker was Marie Bailey the motherof Sophia one of our Shriners Hospital for Childrenpatients (see photo on page 9.) Sophia was born in2005 with spina bifida which is a birth defect whichcreates many complications with your nerves, muscles, brain, bowels and bladder. The severity ofspina bifida varies according to where it is located onthe backbone. Marie pointed out that spina bifida canbe prevented if women of childbearing age take folicacid daily before pregnancy. At 18 weeks pregnantMarie was told her unborn child has spina bifida andshe was offered to schedule an abortion. She decidedagainst an abortion and named the child Sophiawhich means “wisdom” in Greek.

At one-month-old, Sophia had her first visit withour Shriners Hospital in Tampa. She needed casts onboth of her legs, a second surgery and weekly hospi-tal visits. It was on her second hospital visit, she wastold about the Shriners temple in Sarasota and theservice they offered in transporting patients andfamily to and from home and our hospital. This ser-vice became a major source of relief for Marie and her

child. Sophia was casted for 14 weeks at the ShrinersHospital and each week with a smile, the Shrinersshowed up at her door to take them to the hospital. Thanks to the Shriners, Marie was given the knowl-edge of all the resources available to help her bestrong and take care of her daughter. They see a longlist of specialists and therapists who have helpedSophia set goals and reach them far beyond what wasfirst thought possible. To date Sophia has had 44visits to our Shriners Hospital.

Marie concluded her talk on the importance tomake awareness of spina bifida. She also expressedgreat gratitude to Shriners and the Transportationdrivers who consistently go out of their way to maketheir trips to and from the hospital so pleasant.Marie urged all our Shriners to get behind the cur-rent Fall Fundraiser for Hospital Days so there will befunds available to continue this wonderful service.

Throughout Marie’s talk, her daughter Sophiaenjoyed her ice cream, smiled at everyone who camenear and seemed so unfazed that she has two pros-thesis legs, relies on a walker and wheel chair. Hersmile was worth a thousand words. She certainlywon our hearts.

AN EXCERPT FROM GENERAL ORDER NO. 1:FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES

It is natural to associate the fez with Shriners Hospitals for Children. Because of this, meticulous attention must be given to all fundraising activities, including circuses, to make certain that such activities comply with the law of the land and that a contributor is not led to believe that his money will be used for the Hospitals when all or a portion thereof will be used otherwise. The integrity of our charity and of our fraternity must remain above reproach.

Your specific attention is called to the following fraternal and chari-table bylaws:

§335.3 USE OF NAME “SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN.” The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any fundraising activ-ity by a temple or Noble without the written consent of the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hospitals is prohibited.§503.10 The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any commercial product or business enterprise is prohibited unless the written consent of the Board of Directors and Trustees has been first obtained.

Now, therefore, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED:1. Fundraising for Fraternal Purposes:

(a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any fundraising activity without the express written consent of the potentate of the temple having jurisdiction thereof.

(b) There can be no representation, express or implied, that the pro-ceeds will be for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

(c) The temple potentate shall carefully examine all phases of the advertising, promotion and solicitation to determine that it com-plies with §335.3 and §503.11 of the fraternal and charitable bylaws.

(d) The temple potentate must approve the terms and provisions of any contract for a fundraising activity after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, and additionally, as may be required by the temple bylaws.

(e) A copy of the temple potentate’s written consent shall be mailed to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International. Further, such written material pertaining to the fundraising activity, as requested by the Executive Vice President, Shriners International shall be promptly mailed to him.

2. Fundraising for Charitable Purposes:(a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of

Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any charitable fundraising activity other than for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and said activity shall not be in the jurisdiction of any other temple. Permission therefore must be first obtained in writing from the temple potentate. The temple potentate must then obtain written permission from the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees. This request for written per-mission shall be sent to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International, P.O. Box 31356, Tampa, FL 33631-3356.

However, a joint charitable fundraising activity with another §501(c)(3) charity may be authorized provided that a minimum of 50% of the net proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children, and the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees determine, on a case by case basis, that it is in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children and they grant their written permission for the activity.

(b) 100% of net proceeds (as defined in the Charitable Fund Raising-Approval And Reporting provisions of any existing General Order) from charitable fundraising must be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children except for such portion thereof as may be permitted to be retained for the temple Shrine Hospital Patient

Transportation Fund, pursuant to the Special Purpose Funds pro-visions of any existing General Order. Provided, however, if the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees determine for good cause shown, that the law of the land requires that a portion of the net proceeds must be distributed locally, then they may, if they determine it to be in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children, grant their written permission for such distribution.

(c) The temple shall report the result of each charitable fundrais-ing activity within sixty days of the activity, pursuant to the Charitable Fund Raising–Approval And Reporting provision of any existing General Order.

(d) This section shall not apply to activities exempt under §335.4(b) of the bylaws of Shriners International.

(e) Each independent corporation or entity that receives the permis-sion of the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and which does not have its financial statements reviewed pursuant to §334.6 & §337.8 of the bylaws of Shriners International, shall have its financial statements audited by a certified, chartered or licensed public accountant and shall submit such audit report to Shriners International within 120 days of the activity.

3. Statement of Purpose and Disclosure:(a) Every fundraising activity must contain factual information on its

solicitation material, tickets, programs and documents, including all electronically transmitted materials, regarding the use of the proceeds.Examples:“Proceeds are for the benefit of ( Shriners)

( Shrine Club) activities.”“Proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for

Children.”(b) Every fundraising activity which is not entirely for the benefit

of Shriners Hospitals for Children shall prominently state on the solicitation material, tickets and documents that “payments are not deductible as charitable contributions.”

(c) There must be compliance with the Revenue Act of 1987 provi-sion of any existing general order by U.S. temples.

4. Compliance with Applicable Laws:It is the responsibility of the temple potentate, after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, to determine that there is compliance with all applicable laws in its jurisdiction for the temple’s fundraising activities.

5. Financial Records:(a) The temple shall maintain detailed financial records pertaining

to all fundraising activities involving Nobles, clubs, units, orga-nizations of Nobles and affiliated and appendant corporations. Details of all revenues and expenditures shall be maintained in such financial records.

(b) The temple must retain such detailed financial records for a peri-od of seven (7) years.

(c) There must be compliance with Financial Reporting on Chari-table Funds and Activities provision of any existing general order.

6. Notification to Nobility:A copy of the Fundraising Activities provisions of any existing general order shall be printed in the temple publication at least once every calendar year. If there is no temple publication, then a copy shall be mailed to each Noble in the temple not later than the last day in March of each calendar year.

7. Discipline:Any officer, Noble or temple which violates a provision of Fundraising Activities is subject to discipline pursuant to the bylaws of Shriners International.

As we go to press, no responses yet toour October/November quiz. In an inter-view after his tenure, it was U.S. Su-preme Court Chief Justice WilliamRehnquist, appointed by President Ri-chard Nixon, who described the newNRA-sponsored new interpretation of

the Second Amendment as: “one of thegreatest pieces of fraud – I repeat theword fraud – on the American public byspecial-interest groups that I have everseen in my lifetime.”

So here’s our December Quotable No-table quiz. Last year, what former Re-publican Senator wrote upon the passingof fellow former Democratic SenatorGeorge McGovern: “We would come tounderstand that our most important com-monality—the thing that would unite usduring and after our service on CapitolHill—was our shared desire to elimi-nate hunger in this country and aroundthe world.”

Cortez High Twelve Clubby Bob Rodd, Past State President, [email protected]

As we look back on that freak storm “Sandy” theend of October and into November we are very

thankful for it passing over most of Florida. We sendour prayers and thoughts to all of those, not just ourfellow Masons, who are also Shriner’s, Hi-Twelvians,etc. and their ladies, but to all that had any contactwith the storm and its aftermath. I know that formany who had contact with this storm that you maybe in for some difficult times ahead but with the help ofthe Great Architect of the Universe you will make it.

As for Cortez Hi-12 Club #538 we are starting outthe month of December with the 50th Florida StateMasonic High Twelve Annual Convention being heldonly 1 ½ - 2 hrs away in nearby New Port Richey onMonday, December 3. I do hope many of our CortezHi-Twelvians and their ladies are taking the oppor-tunity to attend this one-day session. For all infor-mation about it go to the Florida State Hi-12 website<http://FLHI12.org>, click on “Welcome to Florida HighTwelve Official Website” and follow the instructions.

As you will notice, the convention is on one of ourregular club meeting dates. We know that not all ofyou will be attending the convention so we are stillplanning on holding our High 12 luncheon. However,it will be just a nice get together with no formalagenda. We will arrange for someone to pick up themeal funds from you and turn them in like always. We hope all of you that are unable to attend theconvention will come to Duff’s Original Buffet andkeep each other company and share a happy timetogether. In fact, if any of you have a happy or funnystory to share bring it along. Who knows, you may

even get some newcomers and we know you willmake them feel at home and remind them to comeagain the following week, etc.

And speaking of newcomers we hope over theweeks ahead several more of you will join with us forfood and fun. We meet each Monday, Novemberthrough April, at Duff’s Original Buffet which is atthe corner of Route 41 (Tamiami Trail) and 60thAvenue in Bradenton. We usually arrive between10:30 and 11:00 a.m. We eat at 11:00 a.m. and start ourhappenings around noon. Do not pay when you enterbut come to our private room over to the side andcheck in and pay there so you get the discount. A funday with humor, food, good companionship, Masonicinformation and maybe some special goings on. Also, remember that ladies of members or guests are al-ways invited and encouraged to attend.

In fact one of these special goings on is held thesecond Monday of each month starting with Decem-ber 10. It is an auction made up of items each of ushave that is new or in good working condition thatyou do not need any more but will be a delight tosomeone else. Remember what is one person’s so-called junk is another person’s treasure. The auctionstarts after we finish the day’s happenings and theproceeds are used for our annual picnic in the spring.

Cortez High Twelve Club #538 members and theirladies would like to wish you and your family a veryHappy Holiday Season.

We look forward to you sharing some of your timewith us.

“Masonic Youth”by M∴W∴ Jorge Luis “George” Aladro, Grand Master of Masons of Florida

This year I had the opportunity to briefly attendthe International Order of Rainbow for Girls

Grand Assembly due to schedule conflicts, and at-tend the full 2012 Florida DeMolay Conclave and allI can say is WOW!!!

My Brothers if you are not actively involved in thesupport of one of the Youth Groups all I can say isyou’re missing the boat. We often speak of the youthof our country and where we are going, yet we havethree thriving Masonic Groups that are growing byleaps and bounds and somehow we are either com-pletely ignorant of this fact as Masons or we know itand worse, we forget about them.

If we are truly concerned about the future of ourcountry and the youth of today, attend one of thegroup’s meetings and you will take home with youthe satisfaction that there are Good young men andwomen out there being taught good moral principles, truly good American ethics and all of this while wecelebrate motherhood, fatherhood and familyvalues.

You will be impressed in the manner they conducttheir business and debate their future, how theyhandle adversities and how they use logic in theirreasoning. These are remarkable young men andwomen, that you will be proud to say you are associ-ated with and that will give you faith in tomorrowand will make you proud to be a Mason.

This year I have reached out to some of the Alliedand Appendant Bodies to play a larger role in ouryouth’s future. Everyone that has committed to par-ticipating or attending their annual meetings re-turned home with a different perspective, hopefulthat our Masonic Family legacy can be left to theseyoung people and rest assured they will be in goodhands.

Now what we need is for the Masonic Family tohave an epiphany and come together in the supportof these young people. I am calling on every Lodge,Chapter, Council, Commandery, Consistory, Shrine,OES, Amaranth, etc. But more especially to the indi-

We are proud as Masons to repeat the words ofsome of America’s most honored Clergy re-

garding Christianity and Masonry.Carl J. Sanders, Bishop of the United Methodist

Church and holder of the highest honor conferred bythe Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, writes, “My Ma-sonic activities have never interfered with my loy-alty to and my love for my church. Quite; to thecontrary, my loyalty to my church has been strength-ened by my Masonic ties. Good Masons are goodChurchmen.”

Dr. James P. Wesberry, Executive Director andeditor of the Baptist publication Sunday writes, “It isno secret that Masons love and revere the Bible noris it a secret that Masonry helped to preserve it inthe darkest age of the church when infidelity soughtto destroy it. The Bible meets Masons with its sacred

message at every step of progress in its variousdegrees.”

The Reverend Louis Grant, 33° Mason and Dis-trict Superintendent of the Methodist Church writes,“Let no one say you cannot be a Christian and aMason at the same time. I know too many who areboth and proud to be both.”

All faiths have found value in the fraternity.Rabbi Seymour Atlas, 33° and holder of some of

the highest Masonic honors, writes of what he findsin Masonry, “I was brought up in a religious home, son of a Rabbi with seven generations of Rabbispreceding me. I am proud to be a Mason who believesin the dignity of God’s children and opposes hatredand bigotry, and stands for truth, justice, kindness, and integrity and righteousness for all.

As we approach the celebrations of Decembersome excerpts from an article by Rabbi H. Greffen

seem very appropriate to help us better understandtheir meanings.

“One of the cardinal principles and teaching ofFreemasonry is tolerance. Masonry teaches us tohold to our own religion to the religion of our fathers, but at the same time honor the religious convictionsof our fellow men. This sublime quality of tolerancewe may learn from Yuletide and the Feast ofMaccabees called Hanukkah.”

“There is a close analogy between these two his-torical, traditional feasts. Both of them are symbol-ized by kindling lights, which is a Masonic symbol ofgreat significance. Both of them fall at almost thesame time, in the beginning of the winter; theirorigin differs only by 160 years.”

“Hanukkah and Christmas are feasts of tolerance. How different they are, in their conception, and yethow near in analogy. Hanukkah commemorates therededication of the Temple at Jerusalem by the vic-torious Maccabees after its pollution by the Syriansin 162 B.C. The altar fire was kindled anew and thelights of the sacred candlesticks were relit as thebeginning of a celebration which lasted eight days.”

“Christmas symbolizes human sympathy and kind-ness in all men. As the offspring of a Jewish parent

religion, it set forth to combat heathenism and idola-try. According to the Christian concept, it consti-tutes a rededication to the service of humanitythrough its teachings of tolerance, love, forgivenessand unselfishness.”

“Hanukkah and Christmas revolutionized theworld by gradually annihilating idolatry and hea-thenism, and implanting humanity unselfishness inthe hearts of men. They paved the way for the wor-ship of one God, the Great Architect of the Uni-verse.”

“The purpose of these two feasts and Masonry isto give mankind unity in his soul, holiness in histhoughts and emotions, consolation in his troubles, aid in distress, and hope and courage in his journeythrough life.”

“Studying the history of Freemasonry and theteachings of the two religions … from their earliestbeginning, we see that the ideals of all three derivedfrom the Power that made man. It is the Power whichhas led him along the hard path of progress andelevated him gradually from the condition of ananimal to that of responsible man.”

The officers and members of your Scottish Ritewish you a Happy Holiday Season.

Remember our next meeting on December 10,with dinner at 6:00 p.m. and meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Coreen Brownell, “Corky”, came upwith the idea in 1990, to hand out

sundry items and health & beauty aids toresidents (of the Florida Masonic Home,)received from donations.

She was a member of the MasonicHome Service Guild whose members vol-unteer here and who are also EasternStar members. She initiated a state-wideplea for donations and they started com-ing in from Lodges and Chapters, andonce a week, an area in the “Mailroom”

was opened and named in her honor,“Corky”s Cupboard”, for the purpose ofsupplying the residents with daily toi-letry needs.

Corky ran the Cupboard for manyyears until her passing. It continues tobe run by the Service Guild, and is en-tirely sustained through kind donationsof items, and cash to buy the items theresidents need the most!

Shriners Hospitals for Children Encourages Safe Driving to Help Reduce the Risk of Spinal Cord Injury

Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death for those between the ages of 16 and 24, and the leading cause of spinal cord injuries in all age groups. Nearly 6,000 teens die and more than 325,000 are seriously injured in traffic accidents each year. Approximately one in five new teenage drivers will be involved in a crash within the first year of becoming a licensed driver. Improving driving skills, especially for young drivers, may be the key to fewer deaths and injuries.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is committed to raising awareness to help prevent spinal cord injuries. The health care system has created a brochure promoting safe driving among teens, as well as additional materials raising awareness of spinal cord injury prevention. The brochure is available through the website, www.shrinershospitalsfor children.org, and the other items can be obtained through the online ordering system. In addition the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Chicago and Texas have participated in distracted driving summits, further raising awareness in their communities.

Being aware of the risk factors that typically cause a motor vehicle crash and reinforcing safe driving tips – especially among younger drivers – may also lessen the risk of motor vehicle crashes and spinal cord injury.

Tips for Safe Driving• Give driving your full attention.• Follow the rules of the road and obey

speed limits.• Always wear a seat belt.• If transporting younger passengers, remember

to restrain children under age 12 properly in the back seat, and to place children in age- and height-appropriate safety or booster seats.

• Never get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.

• Be aware of the side effects of prescription medications you are taking before driving.

• Use your side and rearview mirrors every five to seven seconds.

• Never write, read or send text messages while driving.

• Always have a safety zone: a space to your left or right to drive into during an emergency.

• Your safety zone can also be the cushion of space in front of your vehicle when a tailgater follows too closely.

• Scan the space you are driving in by moving your eyes left and right to get a sense of your surroundings. Use your mirrors frequently.

• Keep your eyes up. Look as far ahead as you can see. Do not focus only on the vehicle in front of you.

• Scan your surroundings.• Avoid distractions unrelated to driving.

Distractions Include:• Texting or reading• Talking on the phone – including using a

headset, earpiece or speakerphone• Eating • Fatigue • Arguing• An animal that is loose in the car• Disruptive passengers• Alcohol or other drugs• Loud music

New Patient Referral Process Approved at Imperial Session

Great news! It is now easier than ever to refer a patient to Shriners Hospitals for Children®! At the 138th Annual Session in July 2012, the attending delegates approved amendments to the Colorado Bylaws 509.2 and 509.3 which simplified the way for patients to access Shriners Hospitals. Patients/families no longer need to fill out a two-page application form that must be processed before being considered for treatment. While this is a big change for our system and YOU, we want to assure you that our Shriners are more important than ever in finding children that need our help; as well as informing the public about the noble mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children. We need your participation now, more than ever, to reach more patients. This new process makes it easier for our patients and will still allow for engagement with the nobility. Travel and transportation support should not change. Contact your Shrine temple or hospital if you have questions.

This new intake process continues to support your valuable referrals, without the added step of completing a patient application. Instead, simply provide patients/families with the Shriners Hospitals for Children patient referral card, which may be obtained from your hospital or Shrine temple. In addition, a new Patient Referral Form will be forthcoming in the near future. However, the referral card is preferred, with the patient/family calling the hospital’s referral intake line directly. Why? This is the quickest and most convenient way for a patient to get the care they need.

When did this start? In October 2012, Shriners Hospitals simplified the process

for our new patients; allowing immediate scheduling for an appointment if their clinical needs meet the hospital’s scope of service. To avoid any confusion to our patients or the community, temple staff are asked to no longer use the application form and remove any reference to a patient application process in temple materials or website. Thank you for your continued hard work in helping the children. Please contact your local Shriners Hospitals facility if you have any questions.
