Did you know?
Hybrid vehicles have become more and more pop-
ular in recent years, especially since they reduce
harmful pollutants and offer much higher gas
mileage in an era when gas prices continue to run
well above $3.00 in most areas.
But while hybrid cars help reduce emissions and
are a step in the right direction for a healthier
planet, they come with a surprising downside. At
low speeds, hybrids utilize electric power, which
results in a dramatic reduction in engine noise.
Seems like a good thing, right? Well, though a
plus for drivers, the extremely quiet engine in
hybrids has become a threat to pedestrians and
bicyclists.
When a car is performing certain low-speed
maneuvers, pedestrians and bicyclists are twice as
likely to be struck by a hybrid vehicle as a car with
an internal combustion engine,
according to a report from the
National Highway Transportation
Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Because hybrids run on electric-
ity at low speeds, this is the point
at which the difference in engine
sound is greatest in comparison to
a car with a traditional engine.
Low-speed maneuvers by hybrids that are most
hazardous to pedestrians and bicyclists include:
• Slowing or stopping
• Backing up
• Entering or leaving a parking spot
• Slow turns
With the production of hybrid cars expected to
skyrocket in the next decade, lawmakers are con-
fronting this dilemma quickly. The Pedestrian
Safety Enhancement Act is expected to be in
place by 2014, requiring pedestrian safety sound
systems in all electric cars. Car manufacturers
are trying to come up with ideas to counteract the
silence of hybrid cars while running on electricity.
Some proposed concepts for hybrids include emit-
ting fake engine sounds or beeping when at low
speeds. ■

Let’s face it, children love toys. Always have,
always will.
But, despite all the joy and fun that toys can pro-
vide, some have proven unsafe for children. Even
today, with advanced technology and greater
attention given to child safety than ever before,
some toys are simply too dangerous for children.
According to a report by the American
Association for Justice (AAJ), the top six dan-
gers linked to children’s toys are:
• Choking hazards
• Magnets
• Children’s jewelry
• Scooters
• Lead
• Unforeseen problems
There are systems in place to help keep poten-
tially dangerous toys from going onto the mar-
ket. The Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC) is responsible for spotting defects and
issuing toy recalls. In fact, the com-
mission has issued
over 850 toy recalls
since 1974.
Unfortunately, the actions of the CPSC tend to
be of the “too little, too late” variety. In some
instances, it can take several years from when
the CPSC first spots a safety hazard to when
the product is finally taken off of the shelves.
Additionally, the commission simply isn’t
equipped to handle the sheer amount of products
entering the U.S. market every year – it’s like
squirting a water gun at a raging fire.
That may be one of the reasons why toy-related
injuries have skyrocketed approximately 54 per-
cent over the last ten years.
To learn more about dangerous toys, what you
can do to protect your children and
to understand the important role
our civil justice system plays in
holding manufacturers of danger-
ous toys responsible for harm they
cause, please visit the AAJ website
(www.justice.org) to read their
detailed report on child safety and
toys. For toy and lead paint recall

Name: John M. Knabenshue II
Age: 40 years old
Wife/Children: Wife of 10 years [Becki] and 3 daughters [Kayla, Reagan, & Madison]
Hobbies: Hunting, Fishing, camping, and wine making
Title: Major in the U.S. Army, Engineer Officer
Years in the Military: 21 years of military service
What qualities of your mother/father influenced you the most? Their love and support, they are always there no matter what the circumstances, their hard work and dedication to family.
What are you most grateful for in life? A great family with an understanding and loving wife, as well as, three beautiful and healthy daughters.
What is the best piece of advice you ever got? “Never procrastinate because you never know what tomorrow will bring.”
Have you been deployed overseas? If yes how many times and where? I have done two tours in Iraq (2003-2004)(2007-2008).
What is the most difficult part of being in the military? The hardest part for me being in the military is being away from my family. You really do not know how much you appreciate them until you are away from them for a long period of time.
What do you think has kept you motivated? In the beginning, a sense of per-sonal pride with a never quit attitude, but as I have gotten older, my wife and kids are my motivation.
What is the most unique or strangest incident you’ve encountered being in the military? The most unique was during my last deployment as I worked with a Sunni Sheikh who was the Directorate General for the North Oil Company in Kirkuk, Iraq. I worked with him every day dealing with pipeline security issues between Kirkuk, Iraq and Bayji, Iraq as insurgents would create problems by blowing the oil pipelines.
What types of obstacles do you see increasing the most about being in the service? The biggest obstacle for the military at this time is the budget cuts which lead to troop strength/equipment reductions while fighting the war on terrorism.
What is the biggest risk you see facing new recruits/young adults today? Many take things for granted. Always work to be the best at everything that you do. Don’t expect or demand it to be handed to you. Respect is given when earned.
What advice would you give our readers? Less than 1% of the U.S. population is made up of members of the military. They are the ones that allow you to enjoy your way of life. Don’t take them for granted! ■

the flu or just a cold? It’s a scenario that most parents are familiar with – their child is sent home sick from school with a bad sore throat, fever and body ache, and now the parents wonder if she has the flu or just the common cold. To the untrained eye, it can be hard to differentiate between the flu and a cold since they share some of the same symptoms, but there are a few guidelines you can follow to help you determine what you are up against:
The onset. If the illness came on quickly, it is more likely the flu than a cold.
○ Fever. If your child has a severe fever, that’s a sign of the flu; a mild or lack of fever could indicate a cold.
○ A runny or stuffy nose. If your child’s runny nose has her reaching for the tissues every ten seconds, it’s more likely that she has a cold.
○ Exhaustion. Anytime you’re sick, you feel tired. If your child is overly exhausted, however, that could be a sign of the flu.
○ Aches. Headaches and muscle aches are tell-tale signs of the flu.
○ Appetite. If it’s the flu, you’ll notice a sig-nificant decrease in your child’s appetite.
○ Chills. If your child is experiencing chills and constantly complains of feeling cold, that most likely indicates the flu over a cold.
Other ailments with similar symptoms can include some bacterial diseases like strep throat and pneumonia, so it’s important that you don’t brush the illness off as a cold too quickly. If you suspect your child has flu or other serious con-dition, it’s best to contact your doctor. ■
