I write after a wonderful and action-packed month at school: so many events andactivities going on at Deben! I will start with the Suffolk Skillz events that took place inOctober for Year 7, 9 and 10 at BT HQ at Martlesham. I had the pleasure of attendingpart of the event with those Year 7 students who attended from Deben and many localIpswich schools. It was a fantastic opportunity to work with a huge range of localemployers to look at skills for life. We also had the privilege of seeing new technology such as 3D television in action!

After the event, I received an email from Andrew McVicar from Innovate Design whosaid this of our students:

Last week I had the pleasure of chaperoning some of your schools Year 7, 9 & 10 pupilsround the Suffolk Skillz event at Adastral Park. Id like to commend their behaviour duringthe course of the event. They all actively participated and seemed to enjoy themselves.Hopefully they learned some useful skills from the event and will put them to use duringtheir day to day activities.

I was especially impressed with the Year 7 pupils who were extremely eager and cameup with some very good questions and answers during the course of the day theyattended, as well as winning a couple of prizes!

Well done to all those students who attended this event! Look out for more informationthroughout the Deben News on many other events that have been hosted at Deben thismonth!

I recently had the pleasure of working with several members of staff to secretly nominatemy PA and school Ofce Manager (Mrs Cumberland) for the SecEd Headteachers PAof the year award. As you will no doubt have seen from the newspaper coverage, MrsCumberland reached the nal and was invited to a presentation day in London toreceive her certicate, which will be proudly displayed in the foyer.

It was a wonderful day and I would like to thank all those

at SecEd for making every PA/Ofce Manager at the nalfeel so special for the work they do to support Headteachers.I am so pleased that support staff, as well as teaching staff, are now being rewarded for the incredible work that they doin schools across the country. I can say without reservationthat I am extremely proud of the work our support staff dohere at Deben to support teachers, students and parents/carers. Thank you to you all!

Exciting news! Students in all year groups have once againbeen involved in the process of applying and beinginterviewed for positions on our Student Senior LeadershipTeam for the year.

    Swine Flu

Following guidance from the DCSF and Suffolk County Council, any student showingu-like symptoms will be withdrawn from lessons, and parents/carers will be advisedto take their child home as quickly as possible and to seek medical advice. In these

circumstances, parents/carers should telephone their GPs surgery for advice or the NHSDirect line on 0845 4647.

In order to reduce the spread of infection, the school has:

Installed antibacterial hand wash in all toilet areas of the school, and updated ourinfection control procedures by reminding students to wash their hands frequently, andto use tissues and dispose of them safely. Provided antibacterial sprays to cleaning staff in order to disinfect hard surfaces daily. Made appropriate arrangements to isolate students, and provided parents/carerswith further guidance. Considered, where practical, ways of ensuring the provision of continued educationof our students in the event of an outbreak.

New guidance received indicates that it is not necessary to close the school if casesof swine u are reported. It may, however, in extreme cases be necessary to close theschool if there are signicant staff absences due to an outbreak. In the event of aschool closure, we will seek some means of supplying work for students at home.

Please may I remind parents/carers to:

Ensure that their contact details held by the school are up to date at all times Ensure that they have appropriate measures in place for a possible closure, and forcollecting their children should the need arise.

    Bad Weather Arrangements

We would like to remind you of the arrangements in case of a bad weather closure, details of which are given below.

School closures are a relatively rare event so assume the school is open unless you hearotherwise. If a decision has been taken to close the school, regular announcements willbe made on local radio stations and information will appear on the following websites:

    www.bbc.co.uk/suffolk www.heart.co.uk www.suffolkcc.gov.uk

Please do not telephone the school in the event of bad weather. If the school is closedthe switchboard will only have an answer machine and if it is open then a large numberof calls can interfere with the work of the school ofce.

This is also an appropriate time to ask you to remind your children about taking care on

the way to school. Please ensure cyclists have lights on their bikes when necessary. Inaddition, pupils should be adequately protected against the cold. The school does notopen until 8.20 for pupils so they may well spend some time standing outside and needto be protected.

    Suffolk Skillz Event 20th, 21st, 22nd October 2009

Now in its second year, Suffolk Skillz is an event run by local employers BT, Port ofFelixstowe, Milsom Hotels, Suffolk Constabulary, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, IpswichHospital NHS Trust, Suffolk County Council, Customer Service Direct and Suffolk CoastalDistrict Council. It comprises of a series of activities which are designed to develop thegroups of skills set out in the framework of personal, learning and thinking skills, andtherefore helps to enable young people to enter work and adult life as condent andcapable individuals. The event is currently held twice a year, in the Spring and Autumn, and in October 30 Year 7, 9 and 10 Deben students took part. The day was lled withchallenging activities and the students worked alongside employers to solve problems, create working spaces and learn about what technology can do for us in the future.

All of the students were great ambassadors for the school, showing creativity, knowledge and skill throughout the events, and they all agreed that the best part of theday was looking around the house of the future; 3-D TV, remote controlled heating andlighting, a fridge that alerts you when you need to buy some more milk!

Make Your Mark Year 9 Challenge 16th November 2009

On Monday 16th November all Year 9 students took part in the Make Your Mark NationalChallenge, one of the events set up by Enterprise UK as part of the EntrepreneurshipWeek. The challenge draws on young peoples creativity, ideas and imagination toachieve an innovative solution for a product, service, event or attraction in one day.The aims were to inspire creative and innovative thinking and action, enhance problemsolving and communication skills, involve project managing in a team environment, promote commercial awareness, develop a can-do attitude and required the teamsto work to tight deadlines.

Deben has entered this event with small teams of able, gifted and talented Year 9 and10 students for the last 2 years and the decision to involve a whole year group in 2009came from wanting to give all students the opportunity for challenge and valuablework related experience.

The assignment brief this year was to Let local inspiration lead you to a cool creation;come up with a new and innovative business idea that takes its inspiration fromsomething local. The business could be a product or a service as long as its a coolcreation and makes money. The students were guided to make sure that their idea hada low carbon footprint that helped towards lowering carbon emissions. Greenbusinesses are essential to the future of the UK economy and our planet so the studentsneeded to consider the carbon footprint of their business and think of innovative ideasto reduce it; how their products or services are produced and transported? Could theyreuse and recycle in their business? Is their idea sustainable? Does it use resources whichwill be exhausted?

All of the teams used their creativity and knowledge to produce ideas, outline theircompetitors in their chosen market and a nancial document showing prot and costsin their rst month or year. The standard was excellent with some ingenious ideas beingcreated and I would like to congratulate Emeara who produced the winning entryfor Deben, a plastic bottle shredder to encourage all the family to recycle their plastic.Their shredder could be used by schools and local councils alongside the bottle banksand paper recycling skips at recycling points throughout the county.

I would like to thank Jeanette Brieley from Ensors Chartered Accountants in Ipswich forencouraging the students and sharing her expertise and valuable time on the day.

Community Cluster Event: Felixstowe Young Peoples Summit

Students from Deben High and all the primary schools in Felixstowe have recently beeninvolved in an exciting community project that gave them the chance to have their sayon the facilities and environment they live in.

As part of the Felixstowe Schools Extended Services programme, and in partnership withSuffolk Constabulary, the project began back in September with consultation eventsheld at each school in the Felixstowe cluster.

An inatable POD with interactive screen, similar to that in Big Brother, was set up ineach of the primary schools, and Suffolk Constabulary provided their interactive votingequipment for use in the two high schools. Students were invited to respond to a seriesof questions relating to the local area they live in and the activities they partake induring their free time.

In November student representatives from each of the schools attended an interactiveplanning day at Deben High School to look at the results of the consultation exerciseand, in groups, focus on specic outcomes. The students worked in mixed age andmixed school groups to produce a presentation that included not only the ndings fromthe consultation, but also offer proposed solutions.

The next day the students delivered their presentations to agency and activity providersat a Young Peoples Summit at the Hotel Elizabeth in Felixstowe.Former secondary headteacher and consultant Dave Shorten, who helped lead theyoung peoples work over the two days said: This is a great example of joint workingwithin the community cluster. The project gave young people an opportunity to havetheir say about the community they live in. They all have strong views and opinions, which they presented with condence at the summit event. This kind of activity givesyoung people the opportunity to inuence decision makers and service providers in thecommunity.

The students presentations focused on Things we like about Felixstowe, Things we

would change about Felixstowe and New things we would like for Felixstowe followedby a question and answer session facilitated by Mr Green.

Well done and thank you to all the students from all the schools in the Felixstowe Clusterwho took part in this event. You worked really hard in your teams and certainlyimpressed us all with your presentations at the Summit event!

Special thanks to Joshua Day, Georgia Cattermole, Penny Miller, James Pedersen andHannah Castle who represented Deben in this activity.

    Samaritans Purse Shoebox Appeal

Year 7 form groups have been involved with a project linked with Old FelixstoweParish (St Peter and St Paul, St Andrews and St Nicholas). They collected toys, gifts andtoiletries to put into shoe boxes as part of the Samaritans Purse Appeal. 14 boxes weredonated by Deben students and in total in excess of 250 boxes (they lost count) werecollected! The boxes were sent to some of the worlds poorest children in EasternEurope and Africa, helping to bring hope and a smile for them at Christmas.

One new school child from Eastern Europe said he had a shoe box last year and it wasthe only present he received for Christmas. So along with Old Felixstowe Parish, Debenhas made a difference and helped some less fortunate children feel very special andvalued. Well done Year 7!

Watch out for the next Year 7 Charity event which is the Christmas Craft Market onSaturday 12th December with hand made gifts and cards on sale all in aid of theCYAG School in India project.

    School Council

The School Council have been working very hard to try and come up with some newideas for CYAG (Connecting Youth Around The Globe). So far we have raised 988which means we are nearly half way to meeting our 2000 target which we need toachieve by spring next year. One of our ideas was to have a Bollywood evening andBollywood dress day. We also have the Year 7 making wonderful Christmas cards andmore. There will be a fayre on Saturday 12th December with all that the Year 7 havemade and we would really appreciate it if you could come down and just have a look- you never know you might nd the perfect Christmas card. All the money that is raisedat the fayre will go to CYAG.

The School Council would like to once again say a huge thank you to Mrs Franks and allthe PTA who held a Grease evening on the 17th October and donated the rafe andquiz money to CYAG. That was a huge success.

We would also like you to remember that Deben is holding a Christmas Concert onWednesday 16th December at 7pm at St Andrews Church in Felixstowe. We would loveto see you there, also there will be collection boxes for CYAG around and we wouldreally appreciate it if you could put in your pennies and pounds because every pennyand pound really does help.

Remember to watch this space to hear about more ideas that we have in store. AndMerry Christmas from the whole of the School Council!!!

Year 12 GuidanceTeam building/Life skillsOn the 21st October, the year 12 students embarked on an orienteering adven-ture in Rendlesham Forest. Team building was one of the main aims for theafternoon, as well as the opportunity to gain some useful skills such as mapreading. Unfortunately, the rain poured down, not giving a particularly goodstart. Once divided in to random groups, the teams set off, map in hand, readyto navigate through the forest following the marked trail. All but one groupmanaged to successfully guide themselves and arrived back at the coach. However, for one group it was a sad story of trudging through the pouring rain, the map destroyed by the wet, only to find they were going round in circles withabsolutely no idea which direction they were heading in. Whilst the otherswaited on the coach, David Wright and David Scarlett went in search for thelost group (who will remain anonymous!) Thankfully, all arrived back safelyalthough, they were not everybodys best friend as the others had been waitingfor just over an hour! Despite the lack of orienteering skills and the awful

weather, it was a fun afternoon! E.Rowe
