June 2020 Dear Year 7 Parent, Please find attached a booklet of information to help you and your child to prepare to join us in September. We are of course living through very challenging times, and the continued closure of secondary school sites to the vast majority of students means that unfortunately we are not able to run our usual transition programme this term. Whilst I appreciate that this may be frustrating, especially as many primary schools are now open to Year 6 children, we are required to follow government guidance which does not currently allow staff or students to visit different schools. Secondary school re‐opening is not due to start until 15th June and is extremely restricted with only some on‐site provision for Year 10 and 12 students to support remote learning. This is partly due to the working assumption that infection and transmission rates may be higher in the secondary age group. We are a nurturing school community and the health, safety and wellbeing of our community is our top priority. We are putting in place lots of protective measures to keep everyone as safe as possible on site, and are also working hard to ensure that we can educate and support our students remotely when they are not able to be on site. We are doing our very best to provide as much virtual transition as we can – with opportunities to meet key staff via Zoom, and virtual resources and tours on our website, as well as our transition newsletters. Our new Year 7 students will be able to complete their induction programme and activities once they are able to attend site. The information in our booklet gives you a flavour of what would normally be in place at Alderman White. The government has not yet announced its plans for the wider opening of schools from September onwards. However, it seems unlikely at this point that we will be in a position to offer full time provision for every student. If this is the case, we will endeavor to offer as much on‐site support as possible to Year 7. If we are not able to open fully in September: Supervision: We anticipate continuing to offer supervision to students who meet the criteria (children of critical workers and children with EHCPs or a social worker or who we identify as needing on‐site support) until school re‐opens and will set up a process for you to request Supervision if required. Free School Meals: We will also offer support for families in receipt of Free School Meals, either through providing packed lunches for students attending the site, accessing national voucher schemes, and making funded referrals to local community partners such as HOPE Nottingham who can provide additional support. “Blended learning”: We will get as many students into school at least on a part‐time basis as we are allowed to and able to. When students are not able to access school, we will offer remote learning. This is IT based and students need access to the internet and a pc, laptop, Chromebook or tablet for at least 3 hours per day. We are able to support where a device is not available, and are hoping to offer the opportunity for parents to purchase or lease a Chromebook which their child can use both on‐site and at home. We offer video conferencing tutor session and lessons (using MS Teams or Google Meet) as well as learning activities, feedback and support through Google Classrooms. We will ensure that you and your child are supported in learning how to use our remote learning systems. We will also teach children about safety online and share our IT safeguarding policy with you.
Enrichment: Sadly, we are unable to offer our numerous on‐site clubs and activities at this time, and as of yet we have no timescale for being able to plan trips or residentials. Please be assured that we will keep this under constant review and offer as much as we can remotely, restarting provision as soon as it is safe to do so. We are running a virtual school production this term, as well as Stay at Home Choir and Swing Band, and have a You Tube Channel where we share pieces recorded before and after school closure. Uniform: We want to ensure that parents are able to wash school uniform each time it is worn to school. That may mean that we have a phased return to our full uniform. If you would prefer to wait until September to purchase a blazer and tie, it is fine to do so. We will expect all students to have school shirts, trousers or skirts and shoes that meet our uniform requirements. PE kit may also be useful as we may ask students to attend school in PE kit on some days, depending on the activity they are undertaking. If there are any issues with uniform please contact Ms Friend or Mrs Holling using the contact details in the booklet. Equipment: We allow students to bring a packed lunch, water bottle and their pencil case to school on the basis that they must not share any equipment or food with anyone else. We do have writing equipment that can be lent out but as that needs to be quarantined and disinfected before it is re‐used it is important that students bring their own if possible. We recommend choosing a school bag, pencil case, lunch box and water bottle that can be easily washed or disinfected at home. Absence policy: Until school is fully open it is likely that we will not operate our full absence process. It is our current policy that no‐one may attend site with ANY cold or flu symptoms, or if anyone in their household or who they have been in contact with has possible COVID‐19 symptoms. Where parents are reluctant for their child to attend on‐site provision, we will work with them to address and resolve any issues. Our policy with regard to requests for leave of absence remains unchanged. I appreciate that many of us will have our holiday plans disrupted this summer. Please do not book holidays during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances that have been agreed by school in advance. We will of course keep in touch as the arrangements for September take shape so that you have as much notice as possible of what school provision will be available. I appreciate that there may be lots of questions that we are not able to answer at this point. I suggest making a note of questions and then raising any that have not been answered during your remote tutor induction meeting in July. We are very much looking forward to welcoming your child (and you, if you are not already part of our school community) to our Alderman White community. Yours faithfully,
Mrs A Mellors Headteacher
June 2020
Welcome to Transition News 2 from Alderman White School. The weeks continue and things seem to
be changing so rapidly as each day passes now.
We are still not certain what we will be able to offer as yet for the Induction Days this term but do please be rest assured that we will be making‐arrangements to speak to each and every one of you over the weeks ahead and we are already starting to work closely with year 6 teachers to plan transition in the most effective and re‐assuring way possible. Again, we thank you for your understanding and patience during these uncertain times. We absolutely value the importance of Induction and fully commit to working closely with you all to make this happen as effectively as we can. Meetings with students and parents: We will be inviting you over the next few weeks to an online meeting with key members of staff from school. This is an opportunity to get to know us and for you to ask questions and let us know all about you! We will be chatting about friends too and who you work best with so that we can start working on your new tutor groups… please feel free to email [email protected] should you have any queries regarding this process. We are also planning to use the original week of Induction in July to host our Tutor Group Induction evenings for parents on Zoom:
Year 6 Tutor Group Zoom Induction Evenings:
We will provide more details about how to sign up and access these events in our next edition! A couple of weeks ago, we celebrated Mental Health Awareness Week with our ‘What Kindness Means to Me’ project. Have a look at the school YouTube channel on the link below to see the results:

You and your child will know in advance of these meetings which tutor group
they will be in (but please read on to meet the Year 7 Tutor Team next year…)
Meet Ms Friend – Progress Leader for Year 7 next year: My name is Ms Friend and I will be your Progress Leader when you start here at Alderman White. There is also a good chance you will be in my Art class, as this is the subject I teach. A few facts about me:
Pets: I have two cats and a rabbit. The cats are rescue animals, both a bit daft and one with only three legs. Our rabbit (Edward) is the oldest we know ‐ he was bought for my daughter's 8th birthday and she leaves home for university this October aged 19!! ‘Pet hates' (strangely all beginning with B): Bananas ‐Yuk! Brussell sprouts ‐ even worse!! Being 'bored' ‐ there is always something to do... Bullies ‐ We welcome everyone equally at Alderman White and bullying isn't tolerated. Things that make me smile: My students' artwork (especially when they have tried very hard). Making artwork myself. Singing ‐ We make fabulous music at Alderman White. My garden ‐ I love gardening and reading quietly in our summer house. I am really looking forward to getting to know you, helping you settle in, make new friends, and make the most of what Alderman White has to offer! Ms Friend
The Year 7 Tutor Team: The Year 7 Tutor Team are also excited about getting to know you all! Let me introduce you to the team:
Miss Kemspter: 7KEM Hi, I'm Miss Kempster! I am an English teacher who is interested in lots of different
things, from baking to painting to reading and writing. I have also been involved in
many theatre productions over the years and have written and directed shows for
the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – one of the biggest arts festivals in the world! I can't
wait to find out what you're interested in and get to know you all!
I trained to teach at Alderman White last year and had such a brilliant time I was thrilled that I could stay! This means you will be my first tutor group which is extremely exciting; I know you will love it here as much as I do.
I used to work in primary schools, so I know all about the transition to secondary. It can be a very exciting time, but you might be feeling lots of different things, especially because we’ve all had such an unusual few months. Rest assured that you are joining a wonderful community who will support you completely and that I will always champion you. We are going to do such wonderful things!
Mr Wedgeworth: 7WED Hello! My name is Mr Wedgeworth and I am a music teacher. I’ve been working at Alderman White for a few years, running the band and organising music for lots of school productions, from September I’ll be teaching in the classroom too. I have also worked in lots of primary schools, so I’m sure some of you will recognise me!
In my spare time I love playing, listening to, and watching live music. I play the piano, guitar, bass and saxophone – and, my lockdown project, the trombone (I’m not sure how my neighbours feel about that though!). I love travelling to new places and learning about different cultures. I’m also a big fan of cooking and eating lovely food. I can’t wait to meet you all and help you settle in. Our school has such a great atmosphere and really strong values, so you will feel like part of the team in no time. Mrs Whittaker: 7WTK My name is Mrs Whittaker. The most important part of my role as a form teacher is to get to know you and believe me, I cannot wait! Together we will make sure that you can be successful, confident people and live the wonderful lives that you deserve. I will be there to answer your questions and to help as much or as little as you need, always ready to listen. I am a firm believer in maintaining a strong, open line of communication between home and school and this doesn’t just apply to you, but to your parents and carers too. Feel free to contact me with any issues. I have been married for 24 years and we have a son (North) who is 12 and a daughter (Aledis) who is 1. We also have 2 dogs, a Great Dane and a little pug cross. I am originally from the Canary Islands, but I have been in this country for 26 years now. I am passionate about saving the environment, I am also a scout leader and most importantly I love moto GP, especially Mark Marquez. I can’t wait to start our new adventure together!
Mr Hallam: 7HAL My name is Mr Hallam and I’m also going to be new to Alderman White in September. I have previously worked closely with Year 10 students as Head of Year 10 at my previous school, so I’m really looking forward to finding out about all of you and how you’ve all been working at home in these strange times.
I teach everyone’s favourite subject, Maths, and outside of school I love to play football (supporting Nottingham Forest) and I go skiing every year. I have travelled to lots of different countries and I’m hoping to see even more of the world in the future. I have a little puppy called Charlie, who is currently only 4 months old and he really is most adorable. I’ll show you a picture when we meet! Mrs McLaughlin: 7MCL My Name is Mrs McLaughlin. Although I been part of the WHP Trust for over 12 years in various roles, you will be my first year 7 tutor group! I’m passionate about learning and I love trying out new skills. The first thing you may notice about me are my unique clothes; I love to sew, and I make a lot of my own dresses. I feel that expressing myself through how I look is part of who I am. After graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a degree in Theatre Design, I worked in the theatre and film industry making sets and props. I eventually followed my heart into education; although in my spare time I still work in amateur theatre: I’ve directed, performed and made costumes, props and sets for over 50 productions. I am happily married, and have a 3‐year‐old son called Harry, who is full of energy and makes every day exciting...! I am really looking forward to meeting you all and getting to know you as we start our new adventure together.
Mrs Ferris: 7FRS My name is Mrs Ferris and I currently teach Psychology, Citizenship and RE. My background is in supporting students with their pastoral and learning needs and I am really looking forward to getting to know each one of you. Outside of school I enjoy watching football with my children and taking them out on adventures (the muddier the better)! I know it has been a challenging couple of months, however you have so much
to look forward to as you will soon be moving on to the next stage of your education. I am looking forward to hearing from you and about all the fabulous things you have been getting up to during your time at home. I am here to support you and answer any questions you might have.

Reminder of The Task: #ThisisMe Create a portfolio (a collection) of information to either bring to school when you visit or email: [email protected] Your portfolio should include:
1. An introduction to yourself (what you want us to know about you!) 2. A letter to your Year 6 class teacher about the best things about your time at primary school
(events/trips/lessons/teachers etc.). We will be sending these on once you have started at Alderman White.
3. Your favourite specialist subject – a chance to show off everything you know about a hobby or subject you love to your new teachers.
4. What you are most looking forward to about starting at Alderman White school. 5. A map of your journey to our school (including buses/trams/stops/timings etc.) 6. A letter to your new Year 7 tutor about why you will be a great addition to their tutor group
and the Alderman White Community.

your essential details.
Follow the link above and look at the transition section of the school website.
Download Microsoft Teams and/or Zoom to be able to access your personal meeting invite.
Think of questions you might like to ask us when we meet.
Parents: ‘Like’ and follow us on Facebook for up‐to‐date feeds.
Contact Mrs Holling by email if you have any questions or queries.
Continue to work on the #ThisisMe project – due Thursday 9th July 2020.
Over the next few weeks, once we have spoken to you all and gathered our information together from your Year 6 teachers, we will let you know whoyour tutor is going to be.
Your portfolio can be presented in any way you choose. Try to be creative and innovative (you may
wish to look this word up in a dictionary?)
Are you a singer, dancer or musician?
We usually have a jam‐packed schedule of musical activities going on at school. There's the Swing
Band (10% of the school are in that!), Orchestra and Choir, as well as three productions per year which
include acting, singing and dancing, all with a live band. We also hold regular concerts both at school
and in the community ‐ last school year we had over twenty live performances!
Of course, the current situation makes this a little bit trickier. But the show must go on, and you might
have seen some of the musical creations we have been producing during the lockdown on our school
YouTube channel (check them out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/aldermanwhiteschool).
Now we want to get you involved! So, if you like singing or dancing, or if you play an instrument, we
would love to hear from you. We would like to put together a virtual musical performance where you
all record your parts from home. I will give you all the information you need, but first of all, I need to
know who is interested.
Please email me by Friday 19th June at [email protected], letting me know if you
would like to dance, sing or play an instrument, and what instrument you play.
Mr Wedgeworth – Year 7 Tutor and Teacher of Music/Music Enrichment
And finally,
In February 2019, we hosted a very popular speaker: Kim McCabe who did a talk (Parenting girls safely
through their teens). In this new video – safe to go back to school? ‐ Kim talks about some of the issues
parents face with the school return and how to understand some of worries on the minds of the young
people in their family (particularly year 6, 11 & 13 who were expecting to complete a phase of their
work).

We recognise that we live in a rapidly changing world where those who can adapt, both as individuals and as communities, will be successful. The Trust is flexible in order that we lead change, as well as reap the benefits which the future will bring. We will ensure that our students face the future with confidence.

Personal Property and Equipment
Students must bring to school every day:
a pencil case containing several pens (blue/black and green), pencils, a sharpener, rubber and ruler,
their exercise books
their student planner, which they will be given at the beginning of term.
a reading book
They will also need to bring their PE kit and other items specific to particular lessons on the days that they have the lesson. We recommend that they have a sensible school bag which is large enough to contain the above equipment and any exercise and/or text books that are required for homework. We would also encourage students to bring a reusable drink bottle containing water or squash or juice‐based drink. Bottles can be refilled at the water fountains at school. All students must be responsible for their own belongings and ensure that basic equipment is brought to every lesson. Lockers will be available to students who require them.
We would encourage parents to pay for lunches on sQuid. If you would prefer to pay in cash, please avoid sending large sums of money into school unless for a specific reason, paying for a trip, although this can be avoided by using the ParentPay system. Any money that is brought in should be stored securely about the person and not left unattended in bags or coat pockets.
The school cannot be responsible for personal equipment, although naturally we try hard to create a safe environment. Students should not bring in valuables for example, mobile phones, iPods, iPads, or electric games into school. We cannot be held responsible for any of these items in the event of loss or breakage.
It is very sensible if all possessions are clearly marked with the owner’s name. This makes the task of searching for lost property much easier, particularly with PE kit.
Contacting School
If you have any cause for concern, or any other matter you wish to discuss, please contact the school. It may not always be possible to see or speak to someone straight away if that person is teaching. However, if you could provide the office staff with a brief outline of your concern, they can advise the relevant member of staff who will contact you as soon as possible. In the first instance (and where suitable) contact should be directed to the form tutor. Please feel free to contact the school on 0115 9170424 in order to get in touch with members of staff, or email:[email protected]. Messages will be passed on for staff to respond to as soon as their teaching commitments allow them to. Form tutors are usually the best first point of contact, or Ms Friend, Year 7 Progress Leader.
Students’ Personal Details
It is very important that all parents or carers advise the school office as soon as possible if their address or contact telephone numbers change. This information is required should we urgently need to contact you, particularly if your son or daughter is taken ill at school. We would appreciate it if you could provide the contact details for at least one additional person and preferably two people who can be contacted in case of emergency should you not be available.
It is also important that you keep us informed of any medical condition or any medication your son or daughter is taking. Medication which needs to be taken during the school day must be handed in at the Base and collected at the appropriate time. Students must also remember to collect the medicine at the end of the day if it needs to be taken home.
Travel to and from School
Students may cycle to school if we are happy their bicycle is roadworthy and that they behave safely and sensibly with it. We encourage students to wear helmets when cycling. On arrival at school bicycles need to be left in the designated area and securely locked. The bicycle compound is locked during the school day. Students must dismount at the school gates. Failure to do so may result in your son or daughter being told not to bring their bike to
school. Please note, Segways are not allowed on the school site.
Parents or carers picking students up from school by car are asked not to use the school drives and to observe the no parking markings at the school entrances.
Some students travel to school by bus. City Transport and independent contractors operate in this area.
Breaks and Lunchtimes
Lunchtime:
A cafeteria‐style lunch is served offering a wide range of hot, cold and vegetarian food, including a full hot meal every day. Over the last few years the school has worked hard to improve the quality of the food and provide healthier options. Alternatively, students may bring their own sandwiches. If your child receives free school meals please ensure your entitlement is still valid. The Area Education Office – 0300 500 8080, will advise you on this.
Students may want to go outside at lunchtime and there are also areas available for study and quiet chat within the school. Some clubs operate over the lunch break: for details of these, students should contact the appropriate member of staff or have a look at the termly list of clubs available. This timetable/list of clubs is on the wall in the dining hall. Breaks:
Break is between lessons 2 and 3 and students are expected to conduct themselves sensibly outside, or in the designated areas at these times. The library is open at break‐time for reading, work or exchanging/borrowing library books. Cashless System for school meals: (sQuid)
The school meals catering service is a ‘cashless system’ and students are unable to make purchases at the tills using cash. The system operates using a digitised biometric fingerprint. With changes to Government legislation it is an ‘opt in’ system requiring parents/carers consent and is more fully explained in the enclosed brochure. Provided we have the required permissions this process is carried out on the first day that a student joins the school. Money can be added to an account in three ways either by students adding cash to their account using the revaluation points, posting a cheque into the post box in the school hall for the catering staff to process, or by an online‐ payments system (sQuid). Details of your sQuid account will be sent to you once your child has started at the school.
We set a daily limit on each child’s account of £5.00 but this can be changed at your request. The Free School Meal (FSM) allowance is approximately £2.30, this will purchase the hot meal of the day including drink and pudding or the cold meal of the day including, drink and cookie.
ParentPay
ParentPay is an on‐line payment system enabling you to pay for trips and other items, such as music Lessons and locker rental. It is a highly secure method of payment, giving you access to the history of all previous payments made on the site. Once you are signed up, all items that require payment for each of your children will be shown using one login. You will receive an email receipt for each payment made. For more information, you can visit the website, at www.parentpay.com. Until you are signed up, you will only be able to see basic information. Log in details will be sent to you once your child has started at the school. If you do not receive them please email [email protected].
Your Involvement in School
We welcome active parental or carer involvement. The Parents’ Forum and the PTA are both excellent ways to get involved in school life. Both groups meet once a term to discuss a range of school issues or projects in an informal and friendly atmosphere where views are shared, questions asked and creative solutions suggested whenever possible. New members are always welcome to bring in new ideas. If you are interested you would be extremely welcome. Alternatively, you could have your name added to the list of people willing to be helpers. Please contact the school, or check our website for details of the next Parents’ Forum or PTA meeting. We regularly use the My Ed App/email to provide parents/carers with important updates and information from school. The school website is also another valuable source of information and we are particularly active on our social media accounts so please do like and follow our pages. We also send out a newsletter via email each week, to update you and keep you informed of school activities and important dates.
During the year we hold Parents’ Evenings, when parents or carers are invited to come into school to see us at work and to talk informally to staff and students. Occasional curriculum evenings may also take place, as well as concerts and drama productions. All these are publicised through school newsletters or letters sent home via My Ed.
Monitoring Progress
We believe that helping children to achieve at school is a partnership between parents or carers and the staff at our school. We have routines and expected standards of behaviour. High standards of work are also expected and parental or carer support is very important in achieving this.
Our recommended home learning schedule can be viewed on the school website. Homework can also be viewed by parents/carers using Go4Schools, which is our online tracking system. In addition to this, each student has a student planner in which they should write down homework when it is set. We ask that parents or carers check that this is being done and sign the planners weekly. Form Tutors will also be checking and signing the planners weekly. Other teachers will be using the planners to record details of good work and other comments for parents or carers to read. Further information about this will be supplied throughout the year.
There are specific points during the year when we will inform you about your child’s progress. You will receive a Tracking Report three times a year and a full report once a year for all subjects. There will also be a yearly meeting for parents or carers to discuss your child’s progress with individual subject teachers. However, if at any time you have concerns about your son or daughter’s work, behaviour or progress, please feel free to contact their form tutor.
Grouping of Students
All students in Year 7 are mainly taught in mixed ability tutor groups as they settle in to life at
Alderman White School for the first half term. In some practical lessons such as PE and Technology, students will be taught in slightly smaller groups with a mixture of students from different tutor groups. For some subjects, groupings may change during the school year to ensure that students are taught in groups that will best enable them to make progress. Where we make changes to groupings we will explain the reasons for this in advance to students and parents.
Individual Students’ Support
Our students’ individual needs are important to us. Teachers will ensure that the needs of individual students are met within the classroom. Some students need additional support for a variety of reasons, such as help with reading, spelling, writing, maths or behaviour. This is organised through our Student Support Department. Before a student enters the school, we will liaise with their previous school’s teachers so we have a clear picture of their needs, to enable us to develop an individualised programme if this is necessary.
If the school feels it is appropriate to call upon an outside agency for your child we will contact you to explain what we have in mind, and to seek your opinion.
Rewards System
At Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 good work and positive behaviour is rewarded in a variety of ways: certificates, letters, phone calls and commendations are used to communicate students’ successes to students and their parents or carers.
At both key stages students receive praise postcards acknowledging their excellent effort and/or progress. These can be issued by the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team, as well as Progress Leaders and class teachers.
In addition, we also have the Go4Schools award system which forms part of the school’s tracking and is used to reward those students making good progress and working to the best of their ability by awarding ‘INSPIRE’ points. This system reflects the performance of students; a positive attitude to school; excellent attendance and punctuality and progress made against targets.
During the Summer Term we hold our Annual Graduation Ceremony where we recognise the effort and progress of our students throughout the year. Subject prizes are awarded for effort and progress to all year groups. In this process, we value and recognise achievement by our students, both in and out of school celebrating their successes. If a student makes a significant achievement within school, or contributes notably to the life of the school, we like to honour this and celebrate in an appropriate manner.
100% attendance at school is recognised through certificates and half‐termly prizes.
There are various ways in which students can exercise responsibility. Extra‐curricular activities provide an opportunity for leadership qualities – in team games, for example. Students also take responsibility for some assemblies and will organise charitable activities.
Student Leadership
We have a Student Council (student membership, with staff representation) who meet regularly for discussions about a range of issues and initiatives. The Student Council organises a variety of activities. Charitable activities gain tremendous impetus from their involvement. Students also lend valuable support at school functions.
Alderman White School appoints a team of Senior and Lead Students every year who also assist in leading the school. All students in Years 7 and 8 are also given the opportunity to participate in meaningful work experience as Student Host.
Behaviour and Discipline
We expect high standards of behaviour and responsible attitudes from our students. Manners, consideration and respect for others are key to our beliefs. We have a behaviour code for students, which is referred to regularly and used as a basis for study and reflection.
From time to time, individual students may not live up to our expectations – in response, we take appropriate action. It may be necessary to remove a student from a lesson because he or she is disrupting the work of the other students. Extra work may be appropriate, or a detention, either during school hours or after school. Privileges may also be withdrawn. A student may be placed on report, which means we keep a note, lesson by lesson, of his or her work rate, attendance, attitude and behaviour. This is monitored to encourage improved behaviour and effort.
We value the partnership between home and school and therefore like to keep you informed whenever appropriate. If your child is placed in detention after school for longer than 10 minutes, we will contact you. We may also ask you to meet us to discuss a problem. Equally, if you feel that your son or daughter is not making the most of opportunities in school, or something troubles you, then please ring or make an appointment to discuss your concerns.
On rare occasions the behaviour of a student may be such that it is necessary to exclude him or her from school. Initially this is likely to be an internal isolation, or for more serious incidents, a fixed‐term exclusion. We follow the procedure for this as laid down by the Local Authority. Details are available to parents or carers upon request. This action is not taken lightly and will be used only after other actions have been explored.
We value good relationships within school. Staff will find time to listen to, counsel and advise students in need. If your son or daughter is worried or unsure about anything, then he or she should go to a teacher and not keep it to themselves. It might be the classroom teacher, their form tutor or their Progress Leader. If a child has been in trouble, then part of the disciplinary process will be to talk through what has happened and look for alternative action for the future.
Attendance and Punctuality
Regular attendance is vital for students to make good progress, and so we expect a high standard of attendance from all students. We want to make sure that our students make the most of their time with us. We also have legal obligations concerning absence. Please contact the school absence line: 0115 9175959 to report your child’s absence from school. Please also send your son or daughter with a dated note of explanation for their absence on their return to school. If your son or daughter is likely to be ill for more than three days, then please keep us informed of the situation. If the illness is likely to be prolonged, then work can be sent home if you request it, provided your son or daughter is able to cope. In such cases we would liaise with you.
Please note the dates of the school terms and avoid taking time out of school, if at all possible. Absence from school due to holidays will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances. With prior notice, we are able to grant leave of absence for the following reasons:
to attend a college or job interview;
to take part in approved public performances;
to take part in special tuition, public examinations, sporting events.
Unacceptable reasons for absence include the following:
minding the house;
to do homework;
to help with the family business;
school uniform in the wash;
looking after siblings;
over sleeping;
holidays in term time.
If you feel absence is unavoidable, then please check with us in case there are important assessments or examinations during that period. Please also impress upon your child the need to catch up with all work missed.
Punctuality is also extremely important. Students should arrive at school in time for registration (no later than 8.45am). Students are also expected to be on time to all lessons. If a student is persistently late, he or she can expect that we shall question this, impose appropriate sanctions and try to help him or her towards a more organised approach. Where there is a genuine problem please discuss this with us; the unforeseen can happen. Students arriving after registration must sign in at student reception. A student should not leave school without permission. If it is necessary for students to go home during the school day, we will contact parents or carers in the first instance, or your emergency contacts to make‐arrangements for your child’s care.
Extra- Curricular Activities
A large number of extra‐curricular activities take place, some within the lunch break and some after school. Please encourage your child to take part in these activities and confirm days and times with yourself, to prevent any unnecessary worry if your child is home from school later than usual. There are also numerous competitions as well as fund‐raising events organised through the year. Mr Stephan currently oversees the enrichment provision and any general enquiries should be directed to him in the
first instance. He can be contacted via email: [email protected]. Further information regarding extra‐curricular activities and trips can be obtained from the members of staff in charge of each activity and the school website. There will be a timetable of extra‐curricular activities, with times/days/locations/staff on the notice board in the dining hall for the students to refer to. This will change termly, as our activities change. Students need to check new times and activities at the beginning of each term to inform them of any changes to events they are taking part in.

The Library
When your son or daughter join us, they will automatically become a member of the Trust Library Service. This gives them access to 20,000 items across the Trust, not just those in the stock at Alderman White.
At Key Stage 3, English classes have a timetabled lesson in the Library once a fortnight. We use Accelerated Reader to motivate all students to read for enjoyment. It enhances our ability to make appropriate book recommendations and rewards students for effort and progress, through taking online quizzes. We have a wide range of books covering all interests and abilities.
In Year 7, we run the Brilliant Book Award for those students who are particularly keen readers. We meet regularly to discuss the books nominated for the award and often get the opportunity to meet one of the authors.
Year 8 and 9 keen readers are invited to join the Carnegie Shadowing group. They have weekly meetings to discuss the shortlisted books and take part in a variety of activities. This culminates in a day working with students from other Nottingham schools.
The Library is open at breaks and lunchtimes for those wishing to read, play quiet games, or exchange their books.
Each student can borrow up to four items for up to four weeks at a time. After this time, if they haven’t returned a book they will start to get overdue reminder slips in registers. Once a book becomes ten or more days overdue they are not allowed to borrow any more books until that one is returned. Reminder letters will then be sent until the books are returned. If there is a problem with a book, your son or daughter should come to see the library staff about it as soon as possible.
The Library uses the Trust’s Biometric System, using fingerprints to issue books, which solves the problem of forgotten library cards. If you are unhappy with your child using the biometric system, you can indicate this on the consent form and we will create a library card for your son/daughter.
School Policies
ICT Acceptable Use Policy
Computing Facilities:
Students are encouraged to make use of the Trust’s computing facilities for educational purposes. All students are expected to act responsibly and to show consideration to others.
Use of Technology:
Technology that can be used to store, transmit or manipulate data, such as smartphones, MP3 players, tablets and USB media, should be used responsibly and in accordance with the ICT Policy and Code of Conduct and other school policies, even when not used with school equipment.
Account Security:
Students are responsible for the protection of their own network and email accounts and should not divulge passwords to anybody. Students should not use someone else’s network or email account, either with or without permission.
Use of Facilities:
It is not acceptable to:
Attempt to download, store or install software to school computers.
Attempt to introduce a virus or malicious code to the network.
Attempt to bypass network or system security. This includes the use of anonymous proxy sites.
Attempt to access another user's account.
Attempt to gain access to an unauthorised area or system.
Attempt to use any form of hacking/cracking software or system.
Damage, degrade or disrupt the performance of equipment or systems.
Access, download, create, store or transmit material that is indecent or obscene, material that could cause annoyance, offence or anxiety to other students, or material that infringes copyright or is unlawful.
Engage in activities that waste IT Services time and resources.
Use the network in ways that break school policies and standards of behaviour.
Waste resources, including bandwidth, file space and paper.
Play unauthorised games.
Vandalise the equipment in any way.
Internet Access:
The Trust’s Internet service is filtered to prevent access to inappropriate content and to maintain the integrity of the computer systems. Students should be aware that the school logs all Internet use.
The use of public chat facilities and social networking sites is not permitted in school.
Students should not copy and use material from the Internet to gain unfair advantage in their studies, for example in coursework. Such actions will lead to disqualification by examination boards.
Students should ensure that they are not breaking copyright restrictions when copying and using material from the Internet.
Instant Messaging:
The use of Instant Messaging (IM) is not allowed. This includes web hosted IM, but excludes any school provided system.
Privacy and Personal Protection:
Students must, at all times, respect the privacy of other students.
Students should not forward private information/data without permission from the author.
Students should not supply personal information about themselves or others via the web, email, or otherwise.
Students must not attempt to arrange meetings with anyone met via the web, email or otherwise.
Students must be aware that the school has a right to access personal areas on the network.
Email:
Use of the internet and email is now very much an integral part of school life and a powerful educational tool. All students will be issued with both an email account and internet access on joining the school. If Parents/Carers have very strong reasons for the school not providing their son/daughter with these facilities they must notify Paul Bedford, Trust IT Services Manager, in writing.
Automated software scans all email and removes content that could compromise the integrity of the computer systems.
Students may only use their Trust email account whilst in school and at all times when
communicating with staff.
Students are not allowed to use email during lessons, unless the teacher for that lesson
has permitted its use.
Social media has age restrictions and therefore should not be used in school.
If a student receives an email from an unknown person or that is offensive or upsetting,
you should contact the ICT staff, your Head of Key Stage, or form tutor. Do not delete
the email in question until the matter has been investigated.
Sending or forwarding chain emails is not acceptable.
Sending or forwarding emails to a large number of recipients is acceptable only for a
good reason. Before doing so, the user must obtain permission from the IT Services
Manager.
Do not open attachments from senders you do not recognize, or that look suspicious.
Students should periodically delete unwanted sent and received emails.
Monitoring and Disciplinary Procedures
All curriculum PCs within the Trust are liable to be monitored remotely by the ICT or teaching staff at any time. Internet log files are checked and emails are monitored. Students caught not complying with this policy and Code of Practice will be liable to disciplinary action.
Attendance Policy
It is the legal responsibility of parents or carers to ensure their child attends school regularly and punctually.
Students should be in registration by 8.50am each morning. To facilitate this, the school doors are opened at 8.15am.
The Attendance Officer records the names of all students who arrive late during registration and after 9.00am. These students will attend an afterschool detention on the date they are late, such lateness, if more than an isolated case, is reported to the Inclusion Leader and parents or carers are informed. The first time a student is late (by less than 10 minutes) in a week they will receive a 10‐minute detention, the second time in a week will lead to a 20 minutes detention, the third time 30 minutes, and so on. Should a student be late by more than 10 minutes, then the detention may reflect the actual period of time, up to a maximum of 1 hour.
If there is persistent lateness to school, parents or carers are invited to a meeting with the Attendance Officer, Senior Member of Staff and a Family Support Service Representative. This meeting is recorded on school records.
The school absence line 0115 9175959 is to be used to inform the school before 9.00am of absence from school, and the reason for that absence. This information is recorded.
A notification in writing is required from parents or carers to authorise absences on the first day your child returns to school and must be handed in at reception.
The school will decide if the child’s absence is to be authorised. Examples of absences which will not be authorised are: looking after siblings, shopping during school hours, celebrating birthdays.
Family holidays will not usually be authorised unless in exceptional circumstances.
Should the school be concerned about the length or frequency of absences, it may refer such absence to the Family Support Service.
Ultimately the Local Education Authority (LEA) may pursue cases of poor attendance with penalty notices through the courts.
Students who achieve 100% attendance throughout the year will receive recognition through the annual rewards system.
The Headteacher gives a termly report to Governors about the level of attendance in each year group.
Data Protection
Photographic and Video/Film Images
At Alderman White School we enjoy celebrating the successes of our students by displaying photographs around the school and having articles and photographs published by the media, both in the press and on the television. However, The Data Protection regulations only allow the use of photographic, DVD, video or film images when a parent or carer has given their permission to do so.
We have enclosed the relevant forms for you to complete and you can at any time change your mind about the level of permission given by contacting the school office.
