It is the end of October and we are at the end of yet the academic year
where you have held many hands, open young minds and touched the
hearts of each of the kids in your class by being so much more than a person
sharing knowledge... We salute you!
We hope that in some small way Consumo has helped to make your hectic
teaching life a little easier by sharing:
a joke or two to make you smile
ideas to use as activities in the classroom and
articles that have sparked interesting and stimulating discussions in
the classroom.
Thank you to all our loyal Business Studies teachers that have passed
the September newsletter on to the Physical Science and Advanced
Program Physics teachers. We have had an excellent response and have
now added the “newbie Physics” colleagues to the mailing list. Welcome
Please continue to refer your APP or Physical Sciences teachers by asking
them to subscribe to our newsletter by sending an email to
May the month of October be blessed. Until we meet again …

Smile … because we are teachers All the smiles this week, curtesy of https://www.boredteachers.com
What do you call an acid with an attitude? A-mean-oh acid.
Since light travels faster than sound, people may appear smart until you hear them speak.
If you have to be a “secret Santa” at the end of the year, give the Geography teacher a
globe, It
will mean the world to him / her.
At a job interview:
Interviewer: How many years of teaching experience do you have?
Teacher: Ten years. But for five years I taught grade 9s. So it is five times seven … because in one
year of teaching grade 9s, you age seven years. It is like dog years. Plus the last five. Fourty years
in total. Don’t worry about the job. I just realized why I am ready for retirement.

1. An AP Physicist makes / gives the following mathematical “proof” that R1 = 1c.
Identify the student’s mistake(s):
R1 = 100c
= 10c × 10c
= R(1/10) × R(1/10)
= R(1/100)
R1 = 1c
Answer: There is incorrect use of units. In the second step, the incorrect unit of c2 is not the same as R
on the left side. Again, the unit of R2 in step 3 is incorrectly changed to R in the fourth step.
2. The Eiffel Tower has a mass of 10 000 000 kg. A 100:1 scale model of the tower made from
the same material will have a mass of:
A. 100 000 kg
B. 10 000 kg
C. 1 000 kg
D. 100 kg
E. 10 kg
F. 1 kg
Answer: (E) 10 kg
Some students may jump to the answer of 100 000 kg, thinking the model will weigh 1/100 of the
actual tower. However, if the height of the model is 1/100 of the height of the tower, all its
dimensions are 1/100. Hence the model is (1/100) × (1/100) × (1/100) = 1 millionth of the volume of
the actual tower (no matter what shape the tower is). So if the model is made of the same material
as the tower, its mass would be 1 millionth the mass of the tower, i.e. 10 kg.

It now takes 40 days (and 7 procedures) to register a
business in SA – compared to half a day in New Zealand
Oct 24 2019
The World Bank's annual Doing Business survey shows South Africa going down the ranks
when it comes to the ease of running a business. The survey measures countries in terms
of starting a business, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering
property, getting credit, protecting minority investors, paying taxes, trading across borders,
enforcing contracts, and resolving insolvency.
South Africa is now ranked 84th out of 190 countries when it comes to ease of doing
business – from 82nd position last year, and a high point of 32nd position in 2008. It is
followed closely by Zambia (85) and Botswana (87). Of the Brics countries, South Africa
outperformed Brazil (in the 124th position), but lagged behind India (63) and China (31).
New Zealand was ranked the easiest place in the world to do business, followed by
Singapore, Hong Kong, Denmark, South Korea, US, Georgia and the UK. The World Bank
says these countries typically have online business incorporation processes, electronic tax
filing platforms, and online procedures for property transfers.
When it comes to starting a business, New Zealand also topped the rankings. It takes just
half a day to register a new company in that country – compared to South Africa, where the
process takes 40 days. While New Zealand requires only one step, the World Bank notes
that South African entrepreneurs have to complete seven procedures:
Reserve the company name at the Companies and Intellectual Property
Commission (CIPC) (three days)
Register at the CIPC (five days)
Open a bank account (one day)
Register for income tax and withholding taxes (PAYE, UIF and SDL) with SARS
(one day)
Register for VAT (seven days)
Register the company with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (five days,
simultaneous with previous procedure)
Register employees with the Compensation Fund (thirty days, simultaneous with
previous procedure)
South Africa is now ranked 139 (out of 190 countries) on the ease of starting a business.
The report also found that …

Kamiwaza - the hidden art behind a good retail business
Oct 20 2019 Carin Smith
David Donde (picture supplied)
Kamiwaza is a Japanese word, which, loosely translated, means "godlike" or "superhuman skill".
Although it is often used in terms of sport performances, for entrepreneur David Donde, founder of
Truth Coffee Roasting, kamiwaza should also be applied when it comes to retail businesses.
Truth Coffee Roasting specialises in selecting and roasting what it deems to be the world's most
exclusive coffees. Furthermore, it has been voted the world's best coffee shop by The Daily
Telegraph for two years in a row.
In the view of Donde, the reason why many retailers are suffering in the current challenging
economic climate in South Africa, is because they are "seeking the average in an attempt to appeal
to everyone". "We are programmed in retail to try and play it safe. Instead, you have to rather ask
who you are truly trying to make happy and then drive a real experience you are creating for them,"
he told delegates at the annual conference of the SA Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) in
Cape Town on Thursday.
He also suggests that retailers look at how to get employees to be innovative, instead of being
scared they will get fired if they try something different. "Kamiwaza is about doing something for the
sheer joy of taking it to the extreme, of going where no one has ever gone before. For me that
means not working just to make your budget," said Donde.
"If you want to disrupt your industry, it cannot just be about creating more 'noise'. Retailers have
been programmed to 'shout' their marketing - it is about having the bigger billboard or having more
PR. In my mind, however, marketing is about having a true story worth repeating."
In his view, there are three ways a business can be structured. The focus can either be on
operations (ops); on the relationship with the customer; or on the product offered. "In my view it is
too expensive for a company to optimise for all three types of business focus. At the same time,
when your product is very good, it will likely seem that the relationship is good, and the ops is
perfect. The same goes if you are a very good ops focused company. Then product and
relationship will appear good too," he explained.

19 Monstrous galaxy from dawn of the universe accidentally
discovered October 22 2019 Source: University of Arizona
Astronomers accidentally discovered the footprints of a monster galaxy in the early universe
that has never been seen before. Like a cosmic Yeti, the scientific community generally
regarded these galaxies as folklore, given the lack of evidence of their existence, but
astronomers in the United States and Australia managed to snap a picture of the beast for the
first time.
Published in the Astrophysical Journal, the discovery provides new insights into the first
growing steps of some of the biggest galaxies in the universe.
University of Arizona astronomer Christina Williams, lead author of the study, noticed a faint
light blob in new sensitive observations using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array, or ALMA, a
collection of 66 radio telescopes high in the Chilean mountains. Strangely enough, the
shimmering seemed to be coming out of nowhere, like a ghostly footstep in a vast dark
wilderness.
"It was very mysterious because the light seemed not to be linked to any known galaxy at all,"
said Williams, a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at the Steward Observatory.
"When I saw this galaxy was invisible at any other wavelength, I got really excited because it
meant that it was probably really far away and hidden by clouds of dust."
The researchers estimate that the signal came from so far away that it took 12.5 billion years
to reach Earth, therefore giving us a view of the universe in its infancy. They think the
observed emission is caused by the warm glow of dust particles heated by stars forming deep
inside a young galaxy. The giant clouds of dust conceal the light of the stars themselves,
rendering the galaxy completely invisible.
Study co-author Ivo Labbé, of the Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia,
said: "We figured out that the galaxy is actually a massive monster galaxy with as many stars
as our Milky Way, but brimming with activity, forming new stars at 100 times the rate of our
own galaxy."
The discovery may solve a long-standing question in astronomy, the authors said. Recent
studies found that some of the biggest galaxies in the young universe grew up and came of
age extremely quickly, a result that is not understood theoretically. Massive mature galaxies
are seen when the universe was only a cosmic toddler at 10% of its current age. Even more
puzzling is that these mature galaxies appear …

CERN wants to build the biggest, baddest particle collider
ever
By Mary Beth Griggs Jan 15, 2019
Today, the research center that brought us Nobel Prize-winning news of incomprehensibly
tiny particles announced its plans to get a whole lot bigger. The European Organization for
Nuclear Research, CERN, already has the largest, most powerful particle accelerator in
the world, called the Large Hadron Collider, but today it published a report that looks into
the design of its larger, and more powerful potential successor, the Future Circular
Collider.
The Large Hadron Collider is what was used to discover the subatomic particle called the
Higgs boson back in 2012, and had been host to many other new discoveries. But to study
even more elusive aspects of the universe, some physicists think that a newer, bigger tool
is needed.
Particle accelerators need that size to get tiny bits of atoms up to speeds that approach the
speed of light before they are slammed together. The resulting collisions give researchers
a better understanding of the laws of physics. The Future Circular Collider, with its more
powerful machinery and longer tunnel, will be able to observe particles that remain invisible
to current technology.
The Large Hadron Collider is expected to be in operation until at least 2035. But the scale
of building its successor is so massive that planning started early. The Large Hadron
Collider concept was introduced in 1984, approved in 1994, and didn’t open until 2009.
From the start of its implementation to its last experiment, the Future Circular Collider’s
timeline is expected to stretch over seven decades.
The report issued today is the conceptual design for the Future Circular Collider, a four-
volume work that took 1,300 scientists five years to write. It lays out several potential
designs for the future collider that particle physicists will consider as they set goals for their
field of research over the next few years.

South Africans turn to eBucks and other reward programmes
to offset rising petrol prices Staff Writer 19 October 2019
The rising fuel price and other costs are weighing heavily on South Africans consumers, with an
increasing number of people turning to rewards programmes to help soften the blow.
Statistics provided by FNB show that more than 90% of eBucks rewards are spent within the first
30 days of receiving them, with a large number of users spending their eBucks on fuel. “The
steady increase in the amount of eBucks spent at petrol pumps across the country is evidence
that South African drivers are benefitting from being able to pay for some, if not all of their fuel
with their eBucks,” said Johan Moolman, chief executive officer of eBucks Rewards.
“Between September 2018 and September 2019, eBucks Rewards members have spent their
eBucks more than their rands to fund petrol purchases at Engen service stations, the
programme’s official fuel partner,” he said. Moolman said that these figures will likely keep rising
as South Africans face increasing financial pressure. “Most economists agree that the rand is set
to remain weak and volatile for some time to come, which means that South Africans need to
buckle up for a continued bumpy fuel price ride,” he said.
“However, for eBucks Rewards members, the fact that they will be able to use their eBucks to
lessen the impact of rising petrol prices and the increasing costs of living, is the one certainty that
they know they will always be able to depend on,” said Moolman. According to the latest mid-
month data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), petrol prices are expected to increase for 95
grade and again drop for 93 grade. Petrol 95 is expected to increase by 10 cents per litre, while
petrol 93 is currently showing a decrease of 5 cents per litre. Diesel, meanwhile, remains fairly
flat, with an expected drop of between nought, and 2 cents per litre for 0.05% sulphur content
and 0.005% sulphur content.

Meet the woman who now owns the petrol station where she
was a cashier: 36-year-old shares her journey to success
By Phelokazi Mbude 16 October 2019
Hailing from Mtwalume on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, Khumbu Shelembe’s career
trajectory is a remarkable story. Khumbu completed a National Diploma in Marketing
Management from Mangosuthu University in 2004. Three years later she started working as a
cashier at Mobeni service station. At the station she earned her first promotion after only six
months and joined the book-keeping and supply chain department. In 2011 she completed the
Caltex Retailer Courses and the previous owner of the Mobeni service station unveiled an
opportunity for her to buy a 30% share in the business and she grabbed it with both hands.
Later that year, another opportunity arose for her to own the station outright. This is when she
applied for- and received special funding from Astron Energy, the company that owns the
Caltex license, to gain complete control of the business.
The proud filling station owner is passionate about the fuel industry and has put a lot of hard
work into her journey. “A fuel station is like any other business in that it requires hard work and
a positive attitude. You have to consider others and not only think about your own pocket. It’s
not about money, all that counts is the love for the business, being focused, and facing what
you need to accomplish,” she says. She admits that she’s faced multiple challenges leading up
to her current role but she's learnt to keep calm, even during difficult times.
“It can be very stressful worrying about things like safety and customer satisfaction. You have
to be balanced across all the factors that you need to consider. It helps to have relationships
with people who have been in the industry for a long time,” says Khumbu.
She oversees the petrol station that produces close to 10 000 litres of petrol and diesel a day
that caters for trucks and small cars alike, with a staff of 13 working under her leadership – as
she focuses on growth, support and incentivising excellent customer service. “We motivate
each other and share ideas.
