The SHS 2011-2012 Winter Guard has had great showings in the California Color Guard Circuit (CCGC) this season, placing third overall at competition on March 10th at Independence HS in San Jose. They also garnered a 2nd in the Equipment subcategory, an exciting, hard earned achievement.

“Our goal is not to be the ‘nachos and hotdog’ guard,” said one performer. “When we come out, we don’t want people in the audience to go get snacks—we want them to remember us and stay to watch!”

Indeed, the Guard’s show, entitled “Juxtaposed”, is memorable. The upbeat pulse of Enya’s “Orinoco Flow” fi lls the performance space while the Guard spins and dances with their fl ags and rifl es, black uniforms creating a striking silhouette in front of custom white backdrops. The overall effect is one of dynamic grace, fl uid partnership, and visually stunning performance ~ a show not soon forgotten.

It was a swinging time on March 3rd in the Saratoga High School Gym.

The 2012 Jazz Cabaret was a delight due to the enthusiastic efforts of many people.

2012Was A

Musical Delight !

Thanks to the time and talents of many music students and teachers, attendees were wowed by performances from RMS and SHS vocalists and instrumentalists. The styling sounds of our special guests, The West Valley College Jazz Band, got nearly everyone on the dance fl oor.

The SHS gymnasiums and adjoining rooms were transformed into elegant, sophisticated ballrooms through the magic of the decorating committee, Sophia Yang, Elisa Chan and Johnny Wong. They, along with many student and adult volunteers, created a magical atmosphere that set the tone for the evening.

The many talented chefs in our midst helped Patty Buchanan and Wendy Chang serve up a delectable buffet of treats. Thank you to everyone who helped by preparing or serving food for the performers and guests.

Thanks to Ronlyn Goo, Masumi Ishikawa, Anne Veis and their crew of wonderful volunteers, no one went thirsty. The punch service was so spectacular some guests were tempted to dive into the punch fountain!

The Jazz Cabaret would not be possible without the support of the school administration & maintenance department, including the tireless and enthusiastic support of the Band Directors: Seth Jones, Jim Yowell, Jon Jow, and Naoki Tanaguchi.

We are indebted to Jim Axline, Ron Martin and the many other volunteers who set up Friday night before the event, and tore down and cleaned up after the event. Jim and Ron have led the construction and set up of this event since the beginning of time (or at least since the invention of duct tape), even during years they didn’t have students in the music program.

To all you parents who didn’t sign up but stayed after the event to help tear down… THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! We couldn’t appreciate you more.

What would we do without our wonderful volunteer coordinator, Sefen Hsu and an encore performance by Joyce Shiuan? Their quiet, behind-the-scenes work provides us with the manpower needed to create this magical event. Thanks to the automated sign-ups and not-so-automated reminders, we had more than enough volunteers.

And a big THANK YOU to all the fabulous students & parents who came at crazy hours to transform the gymnasiums.

Not only was this event well received, it was also a fi nancial success: Almost 550 tickets sold, plus over $7500 in contributions! The fi nancial results are due in great part to the publicity created by Tomoko Tanaka and Lillian Fukuda, the underwriting campaign driven by Jennifer Perssons and Cathy Wilson, and Mary Eschen’s and Faithe Liu’s ticket sales.

Thanks to Barry Chaffi n, our event treasurer, for wrapping up the event by determining how much money this event generated for our music programs, grades 4-12.

Thank you all so much for your incredible work and dedication to this event and the music programs that SMB support.

The school year seems to fl y by at this time of year. So many things are happening and before you know it we are standing in the school stadium singing the national anthem for the graduation ceremonies. Take a deep breath and try to absorb all the great things that have taken place and those signifi cant events that will make the end of the school year a memorable time for all.

Congratulations to Nina Jayashankar and Shayda Khorasani for their selection to the ACDA Western Division Honor Choir. These two ladies represented themselves and SHS with the highest standards. We have so much to be thankful for and we’re proud that we have such fine students representing our music program here at SHS.

Congratulations to the cast, crew, orchestra, and Mr. Boitz and Ms. Babbitt for a wonderful presentation of “South Pacifi c”. They worked very hard and long hours to put togethera smashing success.

Jazz Cabaret Our annual Jazz Cabaret was another rousing success. I was so thankful for all the students and parents who volunteered their valuable time to help with the behind the scenes set up and clean up. For me personally, I especially want to thank Julie Galvin, Lynn Welge, Jim Axline and

Lend a Hand to SMBLEND A HAND! I would again like to challenge all parents and interested community members to lend a hand to any SMB sponsored event in the coming year. Make this a part of your yearly giving and yearly volunteer effort. I personally have really enjoyed getting to know parents through unifi ed efforts, such as the Jazz Cabaret, and cherish the moments we have to spend together. Rather than wait for a contact, make the effort to contact an SMB board member to fi nd out how you can help!

Thanks to our SMB BoardOn behalf of our students and staff at SHS, thanks to our stellar

Saratoga Music Booster Board and Committee Chairs for tireless support of young people and music education in our

community. Under the leadership and unyielding efforts of our executive board, you will fi nd we have done remarkably well fundraising and selfl essly advocating for all music programs in Saratoga Schools. Most importantly, our SMB Board has

served young people in Saratoga with an enthusiasm and energy that is contagious and stands as a wonderfully positive

This is a particularly high achievement as WGI is an International circuit sporting contests all over the country. The Winter Guard hosted a Senior Night Celebration on March 30 in the SHS Large Gym. We combined with the ensembles from Los Gatos High School again to develop a growing connection between the two schools. Each graduating senior member was recognized for his/her accomplishments in the program. Thank you to Laura Menard and Marguerite McAfee for taking ownership of the Winter Guard program as its SMB Liaisons. They developed a great system for students to be provided with snacks at competitions and organized gifts and a small reception for the Senior Night Ceremony. Bravo to these two ladies for their dedication to the Winter Guard program.

Color GuardFor all 2012-2013 Color Guard members, please keep in touch with the Saratoga Music Boosters website for information about the upcoming workshops, Pancake Breakfast performances and auditions for the outdoor group. Although all students are found a home in Color Guard, we usually spend time understanding each student’s strengths and weaknesses. The outdoor season is coming fast!

Marching BandFor 2012-2013 Marching Band members, please remember the special June rehearsals coming this year that are going to be focused on a “Kick Off” for the 2012 Macy’s season. These are not typical of our schedule and will be required! For more information, consult myself or Mr. Boitz.

The school year is absolutely fl ying!

Please mark the end of the year concerts (listed elsewhere

in the newsletter) on your calendar.

Instrumental Music Director’s Report

~Seth Jones~Jim Yowell Saratoga Choir Director

Thank you to all of the wonderful families, students and community members who attended Jazz Cabaret this year. The event was a strong success! The evening was great fun for the students of the SHS Jazz programs. Both Jazz Ensemble I and Jazz Ensemble II had remarkable set performances for a lively audience. Those parents who came and donated their time to help makeover the Large Gym into a fun cabaret setting, cooked meals, served food and did tear down deserve a special appreciation. These individuals worked hard to ensure who our students had a safe and worthwhile event. The largest amount of gratitude should go toward our Jazz Cabaret co-chairs, Lynne Welge, Julie Galvin and Sophia Yang. Their leadership this year was remarkable.

March EventsAfter Jazz Cabaret, March proved to be a busy month for the band program at SHS! We hosted the CSU Northridge Wind Ensemble for an afternoon concert in the McAfee Center. CSU Northridge’s ensemble director, Dr. Larry Stoefel, is well regarded in California as a premier conductor and educator. The students were afforded a great opportunity to hear wonderful music. Following that, the annual CMEA Performances allowed both Symphonic Bands to be reviewed by outstanding music educators. Finally, the Percussion Ensemble and Symphonic Bands shared a concert on March 27. Thank you so much to the families who supported students by driving them to the extra rehearsals, listening to HOURS of practicing, paying for lessons and showing up at these events to make music at SHS truly special.

Winter GuardI’m happy to report that our Winter Guard has had a very successful season. Under the direction of Tony Crapo and Ally Finch, the ensemble has had a strong successful showing in the CCGC Winter Guard Circuit. A particular highlight of the season to date has been a 2nd Place Finish at the Winter Guard International Regional in Modesto, CA. Saratoga fi nished 2nd out of 14 groups!

SHS Choir (continued)

Ron Martin for their valuable expertise and long hours of work to make sure everything went off without a hitch. My students had a wonderful time and I hope everyone enjoyed the classic musical selections.

Pancake BreakfastWe are now setting our sights on the up-coming Pancake Breakfast. This annual event is also another crowd pleaser and I strongly encourage everyone to attend this year’s breakfast being held on Sunday, May 6 from 8 – Noon. The choirs will be performing again in the SHS Library at approximately 10:00 AM.

Choral Festivals and ConcertsVery soon all the choir families will be contacted and asked to help with our annual CMEA Choral Festival. You will be asked to contribute some of your time to act as a host to the schools who will be performing at the festival. The shifts are 4 hours in length and everyone who has volunteered in the past has always thoroughly enjoyed their time. I need as many parents as possible to volunteer. Let’s show other schools how strongly we support the choir program here at SHS. Thank you for volunteering. The dates of the festival are Friday, May 11 from 3-9pm and Saturday, May 12, 8am-5pm. Please look on your calendar now and see where you could volunteer for a shift. We need a total of 80 volunteers so we need every choir family to become involved. Our annual End of the Year Choir concert will be in the McAfee Center on Friday, May 18th at 7:30 pm. The concert will feature the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Cantare Chorale, Women’s Chorale, Men’s Choir, and both the Barbershop and Beauty Shop quartets. This special end of the year concert will also honor the graduating seniors and highlight outstanding singers within each ensemble.

Trip to ItalyFinally, our choir tour to Italy is really shaping up. We have had several rehearsals and are anxious to get on the plane and enjoy this wonderful trip. A “Going Away Concert” will take place July 3rd at 7:00 pm at St. Andrews Church. Please come and support these fi ne singers. Your attendance is always a great way to show your support but more importantly we want to thank everyone for your continued support of our efforts. We leave for Italy July 5th and return on July 19th.Best wishes – See you at our next event!

Happy Spring!

March MadnessIt’s hard to believe that we have faced and conquered “March Madness” all over again! Redwood students have been busy preparing for numerous festivals and performances this month to share their talents and enthusiasm for music with their peers, parents and the public.

Our students participated in three Solo & Ensemble festivals this year. Additionally, the Redwood Jazz Band made their annual appearance at the Jazz Cabaret and the Symphonic Band, Vivace Strings and Chamber Strings had a fantastic showing at the CMEA Band & Orchestra Festival. Congratulations to all of our musicians for their dedication and hard work!

As always, the SMB Jazz Cabaret turned out to be as beautiful and successful as ever. Thank you to all of our parent volunteers for their hard work, energy and donations. We are very humbled and appreciative of all that you give for the sake of our students’ musical education and experiences. It was wonderful seeing so many familiar faces that evening. If you were not able to join us this year, you missed out! We hope to see you next year.

End of the Year PerformancesWhile we have a quick moment to catch our breaths, we are already preparing music for our fi nal performances of the year. All of our groups, including our fabulous beginning band and strings, are hoping to see you at our annual SMB Pancake Breakfast in May. Don’t miss out on this great time of food, family, friends and entertainment from all of our groups at this event. It is the one time of the year in which you can catch all groups from beginning through high school in one morning. Additionally, our choir will perform at the CMEA Choral Festival at SHS, our percussion will lead the procession from downtown Saratoga to Madronia Cemetery on Memorial Day, and you can always catch our musicians and performers at our fi nal concerts of the year.

the Redwood and SUSD Elementary Music Departments

We Need Your Help!Music is only strong and thriving in Saratoga with your enthusiasm. As I have mentioned before, volunteering is the heart and soul of the Saratoga Music Boosters and our programs.

In addition to joining us for breakfast, please volunteer to help at the Pancake Breakfast by visiting saratogamusic.org. We cannot do anything that we do without you!

Planning ahead for the summer vacation, Summer Music is back and better than ever! Summer Music camp will be held right on our own Redwood Middle School campus on the same days as summer school, June 18-July 13. Better yet, camp is held in the afternoons after summer school gets out, so there are no confl icts with the morning session. This is a great opportunity for students to maintain their music profi ciency over the summer, learn a new instrument or skills, and even get a start in joining our program for the upcoming school year. Don’t miss out on the chance to work with our great music staff in smaller classes, play some new pieces and learn new concepts. Be on the look out for registration information in your students’ backpacks and online.

Welcome Sean Johannes Krijnen! Finally, I am ecstatic to announce the newest member of our music family. Our two beloved orchestra teachers Mr. and Mrs. Krijnen, brought a new baby boy into the world on February 28. Please help me welcome Sean Johannes Krijnen and congratulate “mom and dad” on the exciting news!
