Issue 25 21st August 2009 Dear Parents, Students and Friends of John XXIII College This week I am delighted to highlight some sporting moments at John XXIII College. Despite the exceptionally dismal weather on Saturday, the John XXIII College Rowing Club hosted the IGSSA Head of the River. The logistics of hosting any regatta at the new Champion Lakes Course are quite daunting, let alone on a day when torrential rain, thunderstorms, hail and gale force winds were forecast. The weather did have a significant impact on the Regatta with the event having to be suspended on several occasions and many events were cancelled. The organisational skills of our Rowing Support Group however out-witted the weather and the day was a great success. This success was both financial and great PR for the College. Many other Colleges commented on the excellent standards of our organisation, catering, first aid and the high level of involvement from our parents and students. My personal thanks and congratulations to all involved on such a challenging day. Another highlight this week was the success our Rugby Teams experienced in clinching the Scotch Cup. In a very tightly contested match our Open Division Rugby Team defeated the Scotch Team to claim the “Scotch Cup”. It was wonderful to see so many current year 12’s, parents, family members and past students come to support our players on the field. It was the very best of school sport played with passion, skill and spirit. The only low point for me was the appalling behaviour of a very small group of young men on the side line. Their use of offensive language and consumption of alcohol was completely out of place at a school event. It is a shame that these young men could not appreciate the great spectacle on the field without resorting to such disgraceful behaviour. This is the style of behaviour that would cause me to consider not having our teams involved next year. The standard of behaviour of both teams was exceptional and I do not want this poor public behaviour to distract from the great spirited game of Rugby that they provided for the appreciative crowd gathered at the Cottesloe Rugby grounds. Of great note today was the large number of Primary Students who were recognised at the Assembly for their participation in Minkey, Hockey, Netta, sub junior Netball and Cross Country Athletics. It was extraordinary to see the large number of students who have been involved in competitive sport during the winter. My thanks to Mr Alderman and all the parents and senior students who coach, manage and umpire junior sport. Well done on a great season. Yours sincerely, Mrs Anne Fry - Principal Last week was indeed a joyous yet intensive week for the entire school as we celebrated Founders Day, it was a very special time for all of us to reflect on the remarkable life of Mary Ward and her dream dedicated to the education of women in her time. She braves misunderstanding and rejection in Rome, yet strides forward towards her deepest longing which was never compromised, because she was a woman of prayer. The new sculpture of Mary Ward unveiled on the cross roads of our College campus is indeed a powerful symbol inviting us to keep memories alive, yet being like her, a person on mission. The Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation is given to us for our mission in the world and for our journey toward the world to come. The response of Peter in next Sunday's gospel, in spite of being confused and deserted by his friends, "Lord , to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life" is indeed consoling and comforting. Peter hangs in there with Jesus, which was a better course of action than a hasty retreat.. We all know of people who remain faithful in the most extraordinary circumstances. Some of these we can understand; parents with sick children or spouses with ill partners. It's heroic, but understandable.. But sometimes fidelity is heroic and inexplicable; when a spouse welcomes back his or her partner after an adulterous affair; when a Jesuit like Fr. Albert Hurtado, who knew what it was to be powerful, opened the El Hogar de Cristo in Chile, Hogar means hearth or home, for the poorest of the poor in Chile, or when a person like Mary Ward, fought a just cause and be persecuted all the way to the end. These are powerful signs of faithful love at work too. Jim Keenan, in his book "Virtues for Ordinary Christians" writes, " To this end, we may need to make more calls, write more letters, cook more dinners, take more strolls, linger a little longer with a friend. We may also need to disengage ourselves from the habit of counting or measuring what the other does or does not do or say", "because each person has two major moral goals in life to be just and to be faithful, and fidelity is in the heart of each person who is trying to live a good moral life in the ordinary interactions of our day. Around the Primary Book Week Book Week 2009 begins on Monday. The theme for 2009 is “Book Safari”. The children of the Primary School will all watch the “Book Safari” play on Monday. On Wednesday, the children in Years 1-4 will have the opportunity to meet the author Jan Ramage and the Years 5 and 6 children will meet Jayne Lyons. On Thursday, the Year 4 children have been selected to go to Mt Claremont Public Library to hear storyteller, Grant Cotterall. The week will end in grand fanfare with the traditional Book Week Parade – where each child is asked to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. We encourage all children to create their costumes from materials they have at home. The parade will be held at 9.00am in the amphitheatre – please come along! A friendly reminder There are a couple of issues regarding children’s arrival at school and we ask parents to please be mindful of the commencement time in the morning. Supervision of the playground begins at 8:15 so we discourage children being dropped off any earlier. The other issue is with children arriving at school after the bell. The classrooms are opened at 8:40 to allow children 5 minutes to organise and settle themselves before the bell at 8:45. For a smooth start to the day, teachers need to have all the children ready and attentive by 8:45. Comments from Year 1G children about the unveiling of the Mary Ward sculpture. Last Friday..... ...... we got to see the Mary Ward statue and we were the first people there at the Mary Ward statue. Matt Steinepreis ...... we got to see the statue of Mary Ward. My favourite part was when we went out of the chapel and saw the statue. Oliver Woodlands ....... I saw the Mary Ward sculpture and it was special. Enyeto Ingrilli ........ we got to see the Mary Ward sculpture and it was fantastic. I felt excited. I liked the lemon. Jasmin Collins ....... I got to see the Mary Ward sculpture. I felt happy. Chloe Margaria ........ we went to see the statue of Mary Ward. My favourite was the invisible ink. Joel Smith Sentences about John XXIII Day from 2B On John XXIII Day I got my hair sprayed and I got a spider from my brother’s stall. James Todd On John XXIII Day I really liked running around with my friends. We did a couple of games. I liked throwing beanbags in the bucket. Joe Hardisty I liked playing my brother’s game. I put my head through the target. I threw sponges at him and I won one sour worm. I liked the Mucky Duck Bush Band too. Millie Monaghan

Health Information

WHY EAT BREAKFAST? Breakfast refuels the body with vitamins, minerals and energy needed for a busy morning’s activities. When we do not eat breakfast we are more likely to feel restless, unable to concentrate, lack energy, suffer headaches and nausea. It is important to encourage children to eat breakfast. A good night’s sleep followed by breakfast in the morning helps children stay active and concentrate at school. It also means your child is less likely to get too hungry during the morning. Don’t forget how important your example is. Let your child see you making time to enjoy breakfast every day. Here are some healthy breakfast ideas:

Heart tick cereal and low fat milk

Porridge

Wholemeal or multigrain bread or toast

Fresh fruit salad

Fresh or stewed fruit and yoghurt

Toast toppings, such as baked beans, eggs, cheese or spreads

Omelette with tomatoes, mushrooms, and spinach.

Fruit smoothie with low fat milk or yoghurt

Muffins or crumpets.

Wrap a banana in wholemeal bread or fruit bread Jenny Hill (College Nurse)

Chase. The following students did a fantastic job of representing the school in this worthwhile event and are to be congratulated on both their creativity and the level of excellence they achieved. A special mention should be made to those students who were willing to be models on the day, Alex Sauzier, Claire Broadhurst and Tess Patterson who all looked extremely professional.

Do you ever think about becoming a Catholic? A few of our parishes in this area thought we would mount a 10 week course helping folk decide if they want to be Catholic. The course will start on Tuesday, 8 September, at 7.30 pm in the Nedlands' parish centre (Thomas Road). It is planned to hold the first five sessions there and the last five at City Beach. Session will last for one hour, followed by simple refreshments. Contact Fr Charles by phone (9384 0598) or email ([email protected]) if interested. If you decide to become a Catholic we could discuss the options for doing so -- big, public celebration or a small, private celebration. Thanks. Fr Charles

Cocktail Party a Huge Success The Parents’ Association hosted “A Night at the Cotton Club” on Saturday 15 August and by all accounts the event was a huge success. 264 parents from Kindy-Year 12 dressed up in black and bling and attended the Exhibition Centre that had been transformed into a New York Jazz Club for the night. Past students, Caitlin Cassidy and Holly and Selena Meegan set the tone for the night by crooning jazz standards to the accompaniment of James Ireland on the baby grand. Current dad, Andy Grljusich “Oyster Shucker to the Stars” tempted guests with his amazingly fresh and delicious oysters as well as keeping up a frenetic pace both serving the oysters and chatting to guests….truly amazing! Thanks to some hardworking mums for helping organise the food;- Cathryn U, Deb D, Lisa Van V, Jackie S, Jan B, Sharon A and Raylene P. A huge thankyou to Ric and Jonathan for all their help in the lead up to and on the night of the function. And finally, hats off to the maintenance team who managed to juggle JTC Day, an Alumni function, the Girls Head of the River and this party with grace and good-will.

Congratulations to…… Harry D’Souza (Year 9) who recently returned from Kuala Lumpur where he won a gold medal in the 1500m in a time of 4.32. Congratulations Harry.

IGSSA Head of the River regatta The IGSSA Head of the River regatta, hosted by John XXIII, was held on August 15 in wet, windy and cold weather with

the occasional hail storm. The regatta was held for the first time at the Champion Lakes course near Armadale. U n f o r t u n a t e l y t h e conditions led to the cancellation of some events for the younger

girls and mishaps for other crews. However every rower who competed on the day deserves congratulations for braving the terrible conditions. Tenielle Baile and her coaching crew did a great job getting the boats and crews out on the water and back on shore and the parents thanks them for all their hard work during the season. Congratulations go to Penrhos who won the day overall. The racing highlight however was the win by the MLC first eight who managed the conditions brilliantly. The John XXIII College parent group excelled in the conditions to host the day without problems. Help came from the boys' and girls' parent groups and a large contingent of the boys and senior students also came to offer their support. Funds raised will go towards the purchase of a new boat trailer. A big Thank you to all the parents of the Rowing club (girls and boys) who did a fantastic job at the Head of the River. It was a huge effort by all and the result was fantastic. Special thanks to Geoff and Angela Knight and Devon Harding for coordinating the event so well. Our thanks also to Anne Fry, staff and students and the school for their support. Thank you to all who baked beautiful cakes, served food, parking people, nurses, coffee makers, bbqs, raffles, marshalling, rescue boats, courtesy buses etc… as you can see it was a fantastic team effort by all, and much appreciated The rowing club is now preparing for the start of the boys' season under our new rowing coordinator, Mr Trent Leach. Details of the try-out day for year 8 boys and older new rowers will be publicised soon.

SCOTCH CUP Cottesloe Rugby Football Club on Tuesday 18 August was the venue of two types of frontal systems. One was a typical Perth winter weather front with wind and slanting rain, and the other was the annual clash between John XXIII College and Scotch College for the coveted Scotch Cup. This year the teams were confined to Year 9 and the First XV. At 4pm and under relatively dry but windy conditions, the Year 9's acquitted themselves very well but were no match to the large Scotch forward pack and fast running backs. The final score was 27-0. A fantastic effort and a credit to the boys and coaches Michael Hodder and Jacob Holobrow (Year of 2008) The "storm" was about to unleash its fury at 5pm when the First XV teams took to the field. Within minutes the crowd of about 200 witnessed some of the heaviest defending of the season and they knew they had a close game on their hands. A penalty to JTC 40 metres out and a decision to kick for goal was a big call in the prevailing cross wind but the resultant kick by Scott Tomlie resulted in a spectacular low trajectory kick straight through the uprights and a 3-0 lead. Not long after, the one lapse in the almost impenetrable JTC defence allowed a Scotch player to scurry over for a try. The score 5-3 as they broke for half time. The heavens also broke with a torrential downpour while Coach Christian (Critter) Golding reaffirmed their game plan.

The second half was almost a battle of attrition as some of the heaviest tackling took its toll on both sides but more so on Scotch College with at least four players being replaced due to injuries. With water lying across large tracts of the ground, it became

a matter of the forwards taking the ball up in a series of watery rucks and mauls, and then a quick ball to the fleet footed back line. Every attack was thwarted by solid Scotch defence. Despite winning several scrums against the feed, and having the bulk of possession, JTC's relentless attacks appeared to be doomed with only minutes to go and it appeared that the second half would remain scoreless. However a penalty to JTC right in front of their goal resulted in another successful kick from Scott. The score, 6-5. The final whistle came a few sodden minutes later and dozens of JTC supporters rushed onto the ground to cheer off the team. In the presentations that followed, JTC First XV Captain Brett Pitman proudly accepted the trophy on behalf of his team from the Scotch College Sports Master Adrian Skeggs the first time in 14 years.
