Newsletter 23 Week 3 Term 3 4 August 2015

Key Dates, Term 3

Dear Parents, Children and Friends,

The month of August is when we

remember two women of great faith,

resilience and courage. As parents and

teachers we want our children to be

resilient and faith-filled so that they can

experience a contented life and be able to

make a difference in our world.

On Friday 7 August, we will celebrate the

life of Saint Mary MacKillop of the Cross,

Australia’s first saint. Mass will be

celebrated at All Hallows Church

commencing at 9.30am. Parents and family

members are most welcome to attend.

Mary MacKillop laid the foundations for

Catholic schools as they exist in Australia

today with the formation of her Sisters of

St. Joseph. Mary’s legacy continues to be

lived out by the Josephite Sisters who

work with those in need and by the lay

staff in our Catholic schools who are

inspired by her vision.

We are so lucky to have Mary MacKillop

as our saint and role model - a very

modern saint. Driven by her love of God

and her conviction; “Never see a Need

without doing something about it”, Mary

worked tirelessly for the rights of the

poor.

As a role model she lived values that we

can all achieve. Mary had courage,

determination, a sense of justice and how

to achieve it. She also had a love of her

fellow man and the need to strive for their

dignity. Mary also had the role model of

Jesus and trust in God. What a role model

for us! And what a legacy she has left

Australia! Take time to share with the

children at home the Gift of Saint Mary

MacKillop and how she changed attitudes

people had about the poor in early

Australia.

The feast of the Assumption of Mary, the

Mother of God, on 15th August reminds

us that Mary, our Mother faced her

challenges in life with humility and faith.

Her willingness to say ‘yes’ to God is

evidence of her enduring faith. Mary is a

source of strength, as through her

inspiration, we pray for a deeper trust in

Gods love and an enlivened faith so that we

may be more resilient with our own

struggles and be able to support others in

their pain and suffering.

Confirmation Workshop

Last week, students receiving the Sacrament

of Confirmation attended a parent and child

Confirmation Workshop. Thank you to the

parents for their receptiveness and

willingness to support their children in this

very important stage in their faith journey.

Many thanks to Fr Mark Payton for

facilitating the evening and to the Year Six

teachers, Mrs Paula Houston, Mr Luke Shaw

along with Mrs Tanya Stafford for their

attendance and participation of the night.

Please keep all candidates and their families

in your prayers, as they approach this

special occasion to be held on Sunday 23

August at 5.30pm.

NAIDOC Day

On Thursday 6 August, the school will

join together to celebrate NAIDOC Day.

NAIDOC Week is usually held in the first

full week of the July school holidays. It is a

time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity

to recognise the contributions that

Indigenous Australians make to our country

and our society.

This year we welcome Aboriginal

Storyteller, Josie Boyle to St Joseph’s. Josie

will be illustrating aboriginal dreamtime

stories using sand art. The students will be

involved in a number of activities such as

dot painting, necklace making, sand art, and

storytelling.

Indigenous Organisation Kalgoorlie, have

also organised a number of activities for

students to participate in throughout the

morning. We will commence the day with

Welcome to Country and a NAIDOC

prayer at morning assembly commencing at

8.40am. Parent and carers are most

welcome to join us for morning assembly

and for the activities. Class activities will

begin at 9am.

Keep in Our Prayers

Please pray for members of our community who are sick or in need or our prayerful support.

YOU CAN DO IT! PERSISTENCE WORKSHOP

Our You Can Do It! Persistence workshop took place in

the Wittenoom Library last night. Parents took part in

practical activities, similar to the activities that take place

in our classroom YCDI! lessons. The feedback from the

workshop was very positive and we look forward to our

next YCDI! workshop. Thank you to Miss Kelly Eastman

and Mrs Lisa Fardell for working together to prepare an

informative and engaging session. Thank you also to

Mrs Sharon Pavlinovich and Miss Melissa Hayes for

supervising students at the crèche.

IPAD PARENT WORKSHOP

A reminder that our next iPad workshop for parents

and students from Pre Primary to Year Six will take

place in the Wittenoom Library on tomorrow,

Wednesday 5th August, from 3.30-4.30pm. The

purpose of this workshop is to provide parents with

support and a greater understanding of how iPads are

used in classrooms across the school as a creative learn-

ing tool.

This is an informal event where we will be using a

number of apps that your child has used in class, or may

use in the future. Parents are invited to bring their child

along to the workshop, in order to collaborate when

creating. This workshop will be facilitated by Miss

Ashleigh Britt and myself. A number of our senior

students will also be on hand to provide assistance at

‘Genius Bars’ during this session. A crèche will be

available, supervised by St Joseph’s staff, to assist with

the supervision younger children who are not attending

the workshop.

OPEN NIGHT – SAVE THE DATE!

Our Open Night will take place on Wednesday 23

September from 5.00-6.30pm. This is always an

exciting event as it provides another opportunity for

students to share their work and learning from the

term. More information regarding Open Night will

feature in future newsletters.

Mr Luke Shaw

Assistant Principal – Curriculum

Our Confirmation Mass will be held at All Hallows

Church on Sunday 23rd August at 5:30pm. If you

did not attend the Parent/Candidate workshop held last

week, you need to contact Mrs Stafford to reschedule.

St Mary of the Cross

This week we celebrate the feast of St Mary of the

Cross, who we know as Mary MacKillop. We will be

celebrating mass on Friday 7th August at 9:30am, All

Hallows. Mary Helen MacKillop RSJ, also known as

St Mary of the Cross, was an Australian of Scottish

descent who was declared a saint by the Catholic

Church. Together with the Reverend Julian Tenison

Woods, she founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the

Sacred Heart, a congregation of religious sisters which

established a number of school and welfare institutions

throughout Australasia with an emphasis on education

for the rural poor.

Mrs Tanya Stafford

Assistant Principal - Religious Education

SAINT MARY MACKILLOP

Scripture:

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God and

believe also in me. John 14:1

Reflection:

Mary MacKillop was a woman who had great trust in

God, believing that God would provide whatever was

needed in all aspects of her life, be it food for the

orphanages, money for the building of the convent,

strength to face opposition and false accusation or a way

through a difficult situation. She often reminded her

Sisters that ‘God’s work does not depend on any of us’.

She had a wonderful confidence in God.

Prayer:

Provident God you provide for us in so many

unexpected ways. May we like Mary MacKillop place our

trust in you when we face difficult situations. St Mary of

the Cross, trusting God’s loving care, pray for us.

This Friday we celebrate the feast day of St Mary

Mackillop of the Cross. It is important for us to

remember and acknowledge Mary’s belief in God and

that he would provide for those in need. It is this belief

that lead Mary to “never see a need without doing

something about it”. If we model this we can help

others in our community and elsewhere.

Sport News

A HUGE well done to all our students who took part in

the Inter School Cross Country. The course was

changed on the morning due to the huge amounts of

rain, but every student ran the course in wet and cold

conditions, demonstrating their excellent YCDI skills

of persistence and resilience. I was super proud of the

way our students not only cheered their peers on, but

also students from other schools - great sportsmanship

St Joes! Thank you to all those parents who came down

to support us on the day.

I am still awaiting the official result from the event

organisers but can confirm some of the race results:

Harley Grace Year 3 - 3rd place

Jessica Flannery Year 4 - 4th place

Flynn Baroni Year 4 - 4th place

Callum Luke Year 6 - Champion boy for Year 6 (and it

was his Birthday - one to remember for sure!).

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

EDUCATION IN FAITH

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

With swimming lessons complete, we are now gearing

up for our next big event, the Athletics Carnival on

Friday 21st August. The 'Jumps and Throws' day

has now been rescheduled to Wednesday 19th

so that points can count towards the championship

medals. We are seeking parents to help out on

both days for setting up, supporting and many

other jobs on the day. Please let me know if you

are available to help. A letter will be coming home

with the students shortly.

This week students have been busy practicing the

House games for the athletics carnival as well as

completing running time trails. The Pre-Primary

students have had a go at running on the track and have

been practising their games that will take place on the

day.

Next week we will be practising vortex, turbo javelin

and long jump. Then on Tuesday we will be holding

trials to see who then competes on the 'Jumps and

Throws' day. Parent volunteers would be greatly

appreciated during the students usual P.E ses-

sions.

Weekly House Captains meetings will recommence this

week to discuss lunch time sports activities.

Physical Education sessions will take place on

Monday and Tuesday for the rest of term three.

Calling all DAD’s (we need you!).

Once again we will be participating in the annual

St Joseph’s v VETS Football Match. More information to

come, but save the date - Sunday September 6th.

The YMCA will be supporting this event. There will be a

BBQ and bouncy castle for children. The match will

start at 10am.
