Dear Oak Class,

Here we are on Friday! You’ve made it to the weekend after today – Love Mr N x

Friday 26th June 2020

Handwriting Letters a-z

Can you practice all of your letters a-z in lowercase. Make sure you’re looking really carefully at the formation and that they’re facing the right direction.

Finding a half – Part 2

Magic 5 is listed below. Good luck! Remember to use the same strategies as you’ve been shown. Our Number of the Day today is 95! – We made it! Flashback 4 Day 4 is below. Can you get all four? I hope yesterday’s work went well! It was quite a nice introduction and I hope it sets the scene for the next part of finding a half today. Yesterday looked at finding a half of a shape, whereas today, it is going to look at finding half of a number. A really helpful thing to do would be to ask your child – ‘When we split our playdough in half yesterday, how many pieces were there?’ – 2. It is really vital that your child knows that when you’re finding a half of something, there will ALWAYS be two groups. Finding a half is the same as dividing by 2. When I show the children half of a number, I do it in a very similar fashion to how you shared equally yesterday. If I want to find a half of 8, I would draw out two groups and share 8 between it. I think that is a good model for working out how to solve a fraction of a number. This is a good lesson to have counters for, or objects, but as they’ve now completed their division unit, they could just as easily draw this out. Try working through these… drawing two groups first, or through counters/objects.

There are 6 counters altogether. Find half. There are 8 counters altogether. Find half. There are 12 counters altogether. Find half. There are 20 counters altogether. Find half. There are 30 counters altogether. Find half. There are 40 counters altogether. Find half. There are 50 counters altogether. Find half.

How did your child get on? Okay I hope!

Have a go at looking at this pictures to find half. Your child might naturally see a pattern and find half just by looking at it – which is great – if they don’t, easily not a problem, just encourage them to draw them out. Can they find half of each amount?

Can they find half and complete the stem sentences?

How did your child get on? Okay I hope. If you think they’re doing well, try TASK 1 below. It is finding half of numbers. I would encourage your child to draw these out to help ensure their calculations are accurate. Part 2 Below, you will find some grids with 6 squares in them. I would like your child to try and find out what half of 6 is, and then colour in half of every grid in a different way. Basically, as soon as they’ve found half of 6 to be 3, they just have to colour 3 different squares each time!

Finish your learning today with this from Mo:

The answer – YES. We do agree with Mo. You don’t have two equal groups when you half an odd number. (We don’t think about the decimal points, just in case you try to explain this!)

Spelling and reading

Phonics sound cards please! Show your child each of these words. What are they?

Write out each of these words for your child. Where are the /oi/ sounds in each of them?

coin boy toy oyster boiling spoil enjoy foil poison royal

Give your child some time to look carefully at these words. Then do these as a spelling quiz! Finish by reading the following sentences and highlighting where those ‘oi’ sounds are.

Dough Disco

Around now we would normally do some dough disco! Why don’t you teach mum or dad how to do it? Choose whichever funky song you like! These are some of our moves.

Writing instructions.

Today’s sentence is below… Did I catch anyone out yesterday with the correct sentence? I hope you enjoyed the kite task yesterday? Did any of yours work? I didn’t test mine out, but I heard they were meant to be good? Today, we’re going to be taking a look at writing some instructions. However, I know that it is actually pretty hard to remember every step of how to make the kite, so I have made a writing frame.

Page 5: Dear Oak Class,€¦ · Choose whichever funky song you like! These are some of our moves. Sphere Sausage Tiger Milk-shake Squeeze from hand to hand Round the world Through the legs

On the writing frame, I have left gaps and these are the parts that you will need to get your child to write on. I would like your child to particularly think of the time adverbials that would go in the gaps, as well as the imperative, bossy verbs. Time Adverbials: First, next, then, afterwards, later, finally, etc. encourage them not to use the same one again, and again and again. Imperative Verbs: put, get, lay, grab, fold, stick, etc. See my example just beneath the template! Next week, we will be making some fruit skewers in school to write instructions for. It would be amazing if your child could join in with this too, but feel free to use any fruit you wish to. Please encourage the children to look carefully at the layout of the instructions, with the images, ‘what you might need’ box, etc. so that they know what their instructions might need to look like next week. We will have a lesson before we write them which looks carefully at the features so they know what to expect too.

Geography

What belongs on a beach and what doesn’t?

At the end of Sally and the Limpet, Sally ‘took the long way home across the beach’. Explain to your child that as she walked home she came across many things on the beach – some of which she was happy to see and some things she definitely wasn’t!

These were the things she discovered on the beach. Does your child know what these items are? Are there any things which they find difficult to identify? Now encourage them to say whether each of the things is alive, was once alive but now dead or was never alive at all. Some of these will be easier than others – encourage debate and reasoning and listen out for key vocabulary. Talk to your child about the difference between the three categories. What will happen ultimately to things that are living or were living and now dead? They will rot away entirely. What will happen to the things on the beach that were never alive? Some of it will never rot away. Most of the non-living material on the beach is waste or pollution which has either been left on the beach by

people or washed ashore with the high tide and waves. Much of this is plastic materials. The average time for a plastic bottle to entirely degrade is 400 years.

Explain to your child that Wembury Marine Centre and Devon Wildlife Trust are going to produce a leaflet to give to visitors to Wembury, which will hopefully result in less pollution being left on the beach. These visitors will include people who have come to swim, have picnics, fish, surf, kayak and play games. The guidance will be called the Seashore. Discuss with your child what rubbish these people might leave behind if they are not careful.
