11/2/2020 Dear Flute Studio and NIU Conductors, These two contrasting etudes were picked carefully for Spring 2021 ensemble placement auditions. Both etudes purposely do not have tempo indications; please prepare them to the best of your ability in regards to speed and accuracy. Be particularly mindful of which B- flat fingering you choose. All three have to be used in these etudes for different reasons. ETUDE #65 - This etude contains easy rhythms, but hard notes. Advanced students can prepare this in fast 12/8 (in 4) and less advanced students can prepare this in slow 12/8 (in 12). Please pay attention to the clear 4-bar phrases. - Most of you are adept in playing in flats due to your high school band program. As you probably know, the funny looking x is a double-sharp. It is an accidental, and it supersedes the key signature. In other words, the fourth note is not an F# double- sharped. The accidental supersedes the key signature. It is an F, sharped twice. Be sure to carry the accidentals through the measure. - There are a lot of high notes in this etude; all of you need to work on your high register dexterity. The fingerings up there are awful, with lots of cross-fingerings. In addition, most high notes in the upper register are sharp, except for one. Hint: it is not high A. That is a stable note. There are no As in this etude anyway. Please note all other half steps in the top register are in this etude. Sneaky. - What key is this in? Please use this to help with tuning. The best way to work on tuning is to use drones. Put your tuner on the tonic of each chord change. Whoever can give me a proper harmonic analysis (chord symbols) of this etude gets a prize. It took me a few minutes, sitting at the piano, to figure it out for myself. Once you do, you have a foundation for tuning your high register. ETUDE #109 - This etude is in an easy key and contains dotted rhythms and tied notes. Be sure to subdivide. Use this term with your future private students and band students – subdivide: to take a note and break it down into smaller, equal parts. Everyone needs to subdivide correctly for good rhythm. - The phrasing on this etude is not as clear-cut as the other etude; think about this as you decide where to breathe. I added a few slurs for variety. Enjoy. - All of you need to work on double-tonguing, even if it is at a slow tempo. For fast notes that do not have slurs, please double-tongue. - This etude does have a tempo indication – Andantino grazioso. More experienced students can think of this as a graceful Andantino – in 2. Less experienced students can think of this as a graceful Andante – in 6. Remember, some suffixes on Italian terms are diminutives (Largo/Larghetto; Allegro/Allegretto), meaning “less than”. Allegretto, or less Allegro, means less fast. Larghetto, or less Largo, means less slow: a double negative. Andante, or walking tempo, is ambiguous anyway – we all walk at different speeds. I think of Andante as “medium slow”, so “less medium slow” for Andantino? Ambiguous. This etude can be felt in 6 or in 2! Keep learning at any age. Think about this: why do beginning bands play in flats and beginning orchestras play in sharps? Today I learned that supersedes is not spelled supercedes. I was thinking it would be spelled like intercedes, or precedes. But then why is proceed not spelled procede? Can someone explain this to me? Ok, I’ll switch to decaf now, and we have bigger issues this week anyway – be sure to vote!
