    From The Principal

Dear Families, As we approach the end of the term and the end of Lent, we have much to look back on and for which to be grateful. As we approach the great feast of Easter we look forward to remembering the institution of the Eucharist on Holy Thursday, commemorating the great act of sacrifice on our behalf which is Good Friday, and the celebrating that the man, Jesus, was truly God when he rose again and appeared to his disciples. Easter is an event like to no other in the Church. It brings together all that we, as

Christians hold to be central to our faith as Catholics. Our humanness means that we make mistakes, we sin and our God fully understands that. Hence the power to forgive and be forgiven is key to how we work with people and our God. He gave us his presence in Eucharist and a proof of his God-liness with his resurrection. All of these aspects are brought together each time we celebrate Mass together. Mass is a communal activity because, as a community, we affirm each other in our belief, are nourished by the word of God in sacred scripture, and share a meal (Eucharist) to re-invigorate us for the journey ahead. I invite all families to consider involving your family in the Easter celebrations, or a part thereof. Easter is at the core of our faith and, by celebrating, we acknowledge what we hold as fundamental to our lives. On behalf of the De La Salle Brothers community, the staff and students of the College, I wish all our Christian families a happy and holy Easter. May the joy of the risen Christ be with you all throughout the year that follows.

    Brother Paul fsc

1941 – 1963 Reunion On Thursday 21 April, 120 Old Collegians gathered in the PAC, Tiverton campus, for lunch and a reunion of classmates. Such an occasion provides for our older Collegians to come together and share stories and experiences from the past. They were all true to form and it was wonderful to see. Our oldest Collegian present was John Whelan (88 years) who was full of life and vigor. John graduated in 1941, just 12 years after we had moved to the Tiverton site. He was closely followed by some from the years 1943/44. Two Old Boys also flew down from Queensland and one even made it part of a trip home from the USA. Speeches are not the order of the day but the Principal made a few observations about the progress and current position of the College and highlighted some of the distinguished old boys who were present. Among them were four De La Salle Brothers and two priests, including Fr Brendan Dillon PP, Glen Waverley. The day was put together by Trish Woodman, Liaison – Old Collegians, John Bolt (Old Collegians’ PR person) and a group of mothers who volunteered their time for the morning. We are grateful to Messrs Lyn MacDonald, Julia Syrros, Lina Agius, Sue Jones, Kym Gardiner, Monica O’Dowd, Denise Carroll, Leeanne Endres and Annemaree Stubbings for their hard work and assistance. Their contribution was greatly appreciated.

75 Years as Brother The College extends its congratulations to three of our former teachers of the 1940’s, Brothers Junian Watson (Malvern community) and Christian J Moe and Finian Allman (St Bede’s community) who recently celebrated their 75th Anniversary of their reception of the religious habit in 1938. All three men are now in 91 years, still active, healthy and a model to all fidelity to the Lord and to the education of young people.

Bit of Trivia The new Premier, Denis Napthine, is the son of Old Collegian, Len Napthine (1936) (RIP), who was himself a classmate of Old Collegian and affiliated member of the Brothers, Bert Newton. They both boarded at Malvern in the 1930s. Len was a very loyal Old Collegian and farmed all his life at Winchelsea, SW of Geelong.

College Chaplain - Appointment Archbishop Denis Hart, Archbishop of Melbourne, has appointed Fr Hien Vu as Chaplain to De La Salle College, Malvern. Fr Hien, the current Parish Priest of St Michael’s parish, Ashburton, has been working with us regularly for the past year so he is now well known across the College community. We welcome the appointment and are grateful to the Archbishop for the appointment.

Chaplain’s Notes A fast, yet exciting term for our young men, especially those who have commenced at the College in 2013. Our Year 7 boys have been visiting the Chapel for prayer and reflection. We have started a series of Masses which will extend into Term 2, with our Year 7 Homeroom groups. The three primary classes are busy preparing a liturgy to celebrate the three great feasts of Easter; Year 5’s are focusing on Holy Thursday, Year 6 on Good Friday and our Year 4’s are going to lead us in focusing on Easter Sunday. It promises to be a very creative expression of the tridium. Reconciliation: The Second Rite will be celebrated in the Chapel on Tuesday, 23rd April, 2013. Parents and students gathered last Tuesday night to reflect on the Sacrament as a family and to look at ways they can share their understanding of our common need to forgive and be forgiven. Confirmation will be held on Sunday, 28th July at the 11.00 a.m. Mass at St Anthony’s Parish Glen Huntly. Classes will commence Term 2. Please make a diary note that the Information Night will be held on Wednesday, 8th May at St Anthony’s Corner Grange and Neerim Roads, Glen Huntly. This will give families an opportunity to become familiar with the location and gather with all those involved. If I can be of assistance to families in any way, you are welcome to contact me at the College. Reminder: If you wish to tap into the College Sacramental program, and have not already contacted me, please do so without delay on my direct line: 9508 2161; email: [email protected], or return the form included in the 2012 new student package. I wish you every blessing as we approach the beginning of Holy Week. May the joy of the Resurrection fill your hearts.

Blood Bank Visits De La Salle The following letter was received from the Red Cross The Blood Service's visit to De La Salle on 28 February was another great visit as we managed to collect 42 units of whole blood and had 55 volunteers pass through the unit on the day (13 of your volunteers were either ineligible or unsuccessful in donating). For this visit we had a target to collect 40+ units of blood, so your result was very pleasing and all your volunteers should be thanked & congratulated for their efforts. With every donation having the potential to save 3 lives, these 42 units donated have the potential to save up to 126 lives so on behalf of all potential recipients of this blood I say 'thank you'. Kindest Regards Doug Allen Community Relations Officer – Mobile Units Australian Red Cross Blood Service

DE La Salle Athletics Carnival 2013 Our annual Homeroom Athletics Carnival was held on Friday, 1 March at Duncan Mackinnon Athletics Track. On a rather typical Melbourne day (at least for the moment), the track was bathed in sunshine from early in the Carnival and it was near perfect conditions for our boys to participate in a wide variety of events. We introduced a few novelty activities as part of the program and they proved to be very popular amongst all year levels. With student attendance and homeroom enthusiasm at an all time high, the atmosphere at the Carnival all day was one of fun combined with friendly rivalry between students to earn maximum points towards their homeroom success.

In what has now become a great tradition of our De La Salle Athletics Carnival, Mr. Hogan and his homeroom provide a sausage sizzle and drinks for everyone and all money raised goes towards our MAD fund and the Coolies Trip to India. With a huge total of $1,858.15 being netted and it goes towards MAD. As well as this significant amount of money being raised for these key De La Salle charities, the barbecue stall really adds to the collegial atmosphere of the Carnival. Massive thanks goes to Mr Hogan and his Year 11 Hegarty students for all of their preparation to organise the stall and then to provide food and drinks for over 1000 hungry and thirsty customers!

By the end of the Carnival, after 160 events, the 2013 Homeroom Champions were as follows:

Year 7 Benilde and Mr Jeff Locke Year 8 Roland and Ms Emma D’Angelo

Year 9 Roland and Mr David Alexander Year 10 Miguel and Mr Graeme Pender

Year 11 Hegarty and Mr Tim Hogan Year 12 Jerome and Mrs Rose Roe

There were many fine individual performances at the Carnival with many boys winning multiple events in both track and field disciplines. The 2013 Year Level Champions were as follows:

William Cavey of 7 Roland Dom Tesoriero of 8 Roland

Zak Hawker of 9 Miguel Zac Hellyer of 10 Hegarty

Liam O’Callaghan of 11 Hegarty Alex Di Medio of 12 Jerome (2013 ACC Athletics Captain)

Congratulations to these students named above as well as all De La Salle students from Primary through to Year 12 who participated so keenly and with such great spirit. Let’s hope that the positive vibe from both students and staff at our first major sporting carnival of the 2nd De La Salle Century, will permeate throughout the other sporting events still to come throughout the remainder of 2013. Having seen all of the athletic talent at De La Salle on show, we now continue the task of attempting to assemble our best possible Athletics Team to represent the College at the ACC Athletics Carnival on Wednesday, 27 March at Albert Park. Training began back at the beginning of Term 1 and it is crucial that all squad members increase their commitment and determination to be selected in our 2013 ACC Athletics Team. “We all know what to do to win Divvy 2”!
