From Civitan Club of Dayton Newsletter September 9, 2003 Today’s guest speaker was none other than our own,

Buck Rodgers. In 1940 Buck went to the State Street

Army Recruitment Center in Albany, NY to enlist.

When he arrived, he was told he couldn’t enlist

because he was drafted. His draft notice was in

process. He and two others made the front page of

the newspaper. After military training, Buck was

assigned to a Military Police (MO) Unit at Governor’s

Island, NY. He watched prisoners from WWI. He said

the ammo he used was so old that the bullet fell from

the casing and gunpowder fell out onto the ground. A

prisoner he was guarding picked up the bullet and

handed it to him.

From Buck’s standpoint, the most amazing thing

about a year before Pearl Harbor was the lack of

equipment in the military. They had a sign on a truck

marked “TANK”. It was almost immediately after the

bombing at Pearl Harbor, that the equipment issued

to the military was considerably better.

Later on, Buck worked in the payroll department at

Fort Dix and had some great stories to tell. Like when

a pilot had a special deduction from his pay. Buck

inquired about the deduction. The pilot told him it

was to pay for the plane he lost when he tried to

maneuver it under a bridge.

Buck was in the Army for 5 years. He remembered

when he was guarding the POW’s from Italy and

Germany, the major difference between them. The

Germans were always planning night and day how to

escape. The Italians were the opposite; they were

planning night and day how to find a way to stay in.

There were quite a few really funny, true stories that

he shared and kept us all laughing until tears rolled

down some of our eyes.

Buck says the thing he remembers about the people

who served is the outstanding work they did. No

matter how difficult the task, a task they would or

could not perform before the war, they managed to

find the knowhow and get it done. People really

shaped up.

Hartford CT, before serving in the U.S. Army

during WWII where he was discharged as a

April Luncheon Programs

April 4, Justin Kratzmeyer, spoke on the benefits of natural remedies in contrast to the more common healthcare and Rx lifestyle. We are taught from a young age to trust drugs and it seems that many do not believe that natural alternatives are as effective. His vision and passion is to clear up this misunderstanding and promote natural healthy living and healing. Justin works with individuals, groups, and businesses and he does community events and Health and Wellness programs. http://jkratzmeyer.com/

The CIVITAN CREED

I AM CIVITAN, as old as life, as young

as the rainbow, as endless as time.

MY HANDS do the work of the world and

reach out in service to others.

MY EARS hear the cry of children and

the call throughout the world for peace,

guidance, progress, and unity.

MY EYES search for others to join in the

fellowship and service of Civitan.

MY MOUTH utters the call to daily duty

and speaks prayers in every tongue.

MY MIND teaches me respect for law and

the flag of my country.

MY HEART beats for every friend, bleeds

for every injury to humanity, and throbs with joy

at every triumph of truth.

MY SOUL knows no fear but its own

unworthiness.

MY HOPE is for a better world through Civitan.

MY MOTTO: Builders of good citizenship.

MY BELIEF: Do unto others as you would have

them do unto you.

MY PLEDGE: To practice the Golden Rule

and build upon it a better and nobler Citizenship
