Now have a go at writing sentences using some of the contractions above. You could write about

the things you have done during lockdown e.g.

I’ve spent endless hours in my garden, tidying and planting and watering and soon it’ll be full of

flowers.

Day Two: Expanded Noun Phrases

These expanded noun phrases all describe things that this lady

experienced during lockdown. Use the table below to write some

about your experiences. You don’t have to use each box every time.

Day Three: The Sound Collector poem

Read the poem and answer the questions:

What do you notice about the words in the poem?

Which line do you think is the most memorable? Why?

Now listen carefully to the sounds you can hear where you are. List

them below:

Time passes throughout each verse of the author’s poem, ending with night.

Remember to think of the changing sounds in your house throughout the day.

Day Four: Writing a poem

Use your planning ideas from yesterday and arrange them into your own Sound

Collector poem. You might want to start and end with the same verse as the

author, but that is up to you. Think about how the poem sounds as you are

writing it. Don’t be afraid to move lines around.

Day Five: Spellings and handwriting

This week’s spelling pattern in adding ‘ous’ to words. This typically changes a

noun into an adjective e.g. fame – famous

It is another Y3/4 objective that we will be revising as the children can find it

difficult.

Typically, the rules for adding vowel suffixes apply:

1. If the word ends with an ‘e’ – remove the ‘e’ and add the suffix

2. If the word ends with an ‘y’ – change the ‘y’ into an ‘I’ and add the suffix

There are, however, some new rules for this suffix:

1. If a word ends in a ‘y’ but the y makes no sound in the new word, the ‘y’

is removed completely (not changed to an i)

e.g. treachery ---- treacherous

2. If a word ends with ‘ge’ then the e is kept not removed before adding

the suffix

e.g. courage – courageous

3. If the root word ends with ‘our’ then you change ‘our’ into ‘or’ before

adding the suffix

e.g. humour – humorous

There are then lots of words which don’t have an obvious root word that

we just have to learn but we will deal with those next week!

Compete the table by adding the suffix ‘ous’ to create an adjective. Write

which rule you had to apply to spell the new word.

noun adjective rule

poison poisonous no change

vary

nerve

courageous

venom

victorious

mystery

adventurous

ridicule

glamour

outrageous

study

prosperous

peril

monotony

Make sure you look up any words in the dictionary if you are unsure what

they mean. Try to use 2/3 in a sentence.
