systems, data concentrator/s and meter devices that enables the utility to measure, collect, & analyse energy usage and communicate with devices
AMI extends (AMR) technology by providing two way communications, allowing commands to be sent to the meter for multiple purposes, including:
– Time-of-use pricing information for prepayment
– Demand-response actions such as load management

General Industry Definition / Understanding Two-way communication between the meter and a central
head end or billing system
The meter has a Real Time Clock (typically synchronised by the Data Concentrator / Head end system)
The meter supports Time of Use and multiple tariffs
The head end system is able to remotely implement tasks such as disconnect and reconnect of the meter’s load switch
Meter is able to control load (power limiting) and the head end system is able to remotely change these parameter's
The head end system is able to read meter parameters

Overview
The DC450 is an active and intelligent concentrator that handles
communication between the system and the metering devices
Main Functions• Manages the inventory and the status of the PLC meters
• Continuous capture and storage of the metering data from metering devices according to the defined reading profiles

• Maintaining the time and updating the metering device time
• Gathering statistics about PLC transmissions

DC450 sends the SMS text message to the technician in the event of a power failure
Enables utility to improve response to power failures at mini-substation level
Additionally serves as a revenue protection feature in the event that the power is fraudulently disconnected in the attempt to tamper the metering devices or Data Concentrators

At the centre is the Data Concentrator and the view shows G3 smart meter devices in GREEN that have the best communications quality
The view also shows some meters in yellow or lighter shade of green that have a lower quality of communications (Possibly due to a noise source in the area or distance from the DC)
In the case an additional device has been located but it is not able to join the G3 PAN, this is shown in RED

Power Quality Features Smart meters are able to provide a wide range
of power quality information
Power quality information is able to be locally read via the optical interface or using the Customer Interface Unit
This valuable information is also able to be read remotely using a Head End System
Power Quality data is increasingly becoming valuable data to assist utilities in providing high quality service to their end consumers
Response to customer queries is further enhances when the utility staff are able to query the household power information on demand or analyse a trend of information over time (e.g. power failures, voltage sags and swells and much more)
