Whole School NewsGrowing a Sense of BelongingI have spoken in newsletters this term about how the leaders at Chairo are thinking and exploring more deeply about how students experience a sense of belonging at Chairo. In the previous article, I reflected on how a sense of belonging was deeply related to relationship.

But there is a further question we are grappling with: how does a sense of belonging grow? How is it made deeper and stronger? What can our schools, families and churches do to build this sense within our community members?

Firstly, belonging is strongly tied to being known. I can be in a group (a club or team) and still not necessarily feel like I belong. Belonging comes with being known. This goes beyond just name, rank and serial number. It relates to being known about—who I am, what I am like, what I am good at, how I can best contribute.

Many of these aspects of being known require time—time to talk and ask and share. And in busy places (like homes and churches and schools) this requires us to intentionally set aside time to do things together that allow us to find out about each other so that we become better known.

A strong sense of belonging is also linked to feeling connected with others in the groups or communities that we are part of. One aspect of feeling connected is to experience a sense of common purpose.

This is often why clubs and teams can be places where positive connection is experienced. They are place where people spend time together pursuing common or agreed goals or intentions. We are together to play a game, sing and dance, cook food, climb a mountain and so on.

So again, our families, churches and schools need to be intentional about articulating the purpose behind some of the very ordinary things that we do day in and day out. For example, ‘Tomorrow, we are going as a family to the pool so we can spend time together, and stay cool in the warm weather’.

Finally, we also know that a sense of belonging is strongly shaped when we experience love and care in a particular place or group. Knowing that a group of people care for us, or are gentle or generous toward us, is vital in building a sense of belonging.

Now we assume that our families, churches and schools are places where students feel love and care. And most such places would offer these qualities. Yet, in the busyness and fullness of everyday life, we need to be intentional about expressing these things to each other, and not just assume that the members of our community will experience that.

As leaders at Chairo, we are wanting to be intentional about understanding, and doing things intentionally, that build a stronger sense of belonging across our community. I trust that over time, and in very tangible

ways, you and your children will experience that in the midst of our communities.Simon Matthews, Executive Principal

Keeping Our Students SafeBeing eSmartHave you heard that Chairo is an eSmart School and wondered what this really means?

An eSmart School is a school community where the smart, safe and responsible use of information and communications technology is a cultural norm. All community members are equipped to embrace the best of what these technologies can offer, while learning how to handle the possible pitfalls associated with them.

eSmart is an initiative of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation. It helps teachers, librarians and the wider community to manage cyber risks and issues so that students feel supported and are educated about how to be a responsible user of technology.

The framework for eSmart schools is organised into six domains:1. Effective school organisation2. School plans, policies and procedures3. A respectful and caring school community4. Effective teacher practices5. An eSmart curriculum6. Partnerships with parents and local communitiesOur focus at Chairo is clear: the transformation of students so that their capability, commitment and character may reflect Christ.

Transformation involves shaping the desires of students towards God’s kingdom in a way that pursues ‘shalom’—the integrated wholeness, wellbeing, harmony and purpose in every dimension of life. As such, it is important that throughout their years at school, students are supported in their technology journey.

Our eSmart Parent Resources have recently been updated on Linc and have valuable information about how to navigate the complexities of the digital world.

As we work in partnership, we ask that you take the time to check out these resources as you endeavour to raise your children to think biblically, and to act with discernment when it comes to the use of technology.

Page 3: Dates to Remember - Chairo Christian School...Simon Matthews, Executive Principal Summer Uniform All students are required to wear full summer uniform in Term 4. However, please note

Communication with FamiliesOne important area that we are constantly striving to improve is communication with families, which of course is a vital part of effective partnership.

We have recently made some improvements to the Linc ‘dashboard’ and campus pages that are accessible to parents and guardians. If you haven’t visited Linc recently, I’d encourage you to do so. You can get to Linc via our website or just by going to linc.chairo.vic.edu.au.

I am also very pleased to announce that we expect to launch a parent app during Term 4 this year. Parents and guardians will have ‘real-time’ access on your smart phones and other devices to information and tools that are relevant to you based on the campus or campuses that your children attend.

You may have noticed this year that we have reduced the volume of need-to-know information in newsletters and instead we’ve included more nice-to-know news—profiles, event reports, photos, etc. This change is in line with our desire for Linc to be used as the primary source of school-related information.

We are also currently working toward providing all Chairo parents and guardians with access for the first time to an area of our school management system known as Parent Lounge. This will allow you to view academic reports, and also update contact details and student medical information.

Early next week, all families will receive a letter by email that explains more about the various matters referred to above.Simon Matthews, Executive Principal

Summer UniformAll students are required to wear full summer uniform in Term 4. However, please note that there will be a three-week period at the start of term where students may choose to wear their winter uniform depending on the weather. And don’t forget that hats must be worn outdoors during Term 4.

Exit Requirements ReminderParents are reminded that a full term’s notice is required if you wish to end your child’s enrolment at Chairo for any reason. If this notice is not given, fees for the notice period will be charged unless there are exceptional circumstances.

If financial pressures are a concern, you are encouraged to contact our finance department prior to contemplating change. In most cases, we are able to assist families to continue to enjoy and benefit from a Chairo education. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Governance NewsAssociation General MeetingThe next general meeting of our Association, which operates all Chairo campuses, will be held at the Pakenham Campus on Thursday 15 November from 7.30 pm. All parents and staff members are encouraged to attend what will be an informative and enjoyable evening. More information will be provided soon.

Full membershipFull members of our Association are able to vote at general meetings and nominate others for election to serve on the Board. Current parents who are Christians and fully supportive of our Articles of Faith, and who have been associate members for at least one year, are able to apply to become full members. Application forms can be obtained by contacting the office at any campus.

Board ElectionDo you know someone who you believe might be ready, willing and able to serve a term on the Board, commencing at the start of 2019? Perhaps that might even be you!

Full members of the Association are invited to prayerfully consider who they might be able to nominate (with the nominee’s consent). To be eligible for nomination, the potential Board member needs to be a Christian who has been a Chairo parent for at least one year, and cannot be a staff member.

Elections will be held at the general meeting on Thursday 15 November. Nominations would be appreciated by the end of this term, although will be accepted until Tuesday 9 October. Forms are available from Caroline Weatherhead ([email protected]) or Darryl Martin ([email protected]).

Local Sporting Champions GrantsThe Local Sporting Champions program provides financial assistance of $500 or more for successful applicants who are coaches, officials and competitors aged 12 to 18 participating in state, national or international championships.

A range of criteria apply. For more information, go to sportaus.gov.au/grants_and_funding/local_sporting_champions.

Student Leader Q&A: Adelaide McLean (Drouin)What do you like most about being a student at Chairo? At Chairo, we experience a strong sense of community, and each person (whether student or staff member) is valued, supported and encouraged.

I have also come to recognise the importance and privilege of receiving an education built upon biblical foundations.

To witness my peers discussing topics around God, and passionate teachers spurring them on to grasp or develop their faith, is incredible and should never be taken for granted.

How have you found the experience of being a student leader? The opportunities provided have been awesome—some even life-changing—yet at times challenging. Experiences have included chatting about God and motivations to learn, collaborating with leadership teams from other schools, contributing to Senate decision-making and leading assembly devotions.

God has taught me much this year and leadership has provided welcomed opportunity for personal growth.

What are you passionate about? I am passionate about people, learning and challenging myself. But most importantly, I am passionate about my relationship with Jesus. I am constantly reminded of God’s grace, love and forgiveness in what Jesus did for us, and I aim to be forever passionate about His story.

Where is your favourite place to visit? My favourite destination is the Northern Territory. Having travelled there as a child—hiking the Olgas, Uluru and Kings Canyon—and later returning to Darwin for the GLEAN service trip in 2016, I have developed a heart for the people, the red dirt, the heat, the mesmerising landscape and the work that God is doing up there.

Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?I would definitely like to swap with the gifted composer Hans Zimmer, who conducts orchestras and musicians performing live soundtracks from movies such as Batman and Pirates of the Caribbean. A girl can only dream!

If you were a crayon, what colour would you be and why?I’d be a yellow crayon! As a child in a large family, I was always allocated the yellow Tupperware plastic cups, containers and drink bottles. This colour was forced upon me, yet reflects my blonde hair and bright, positive and energetic personality.

Who inspires you? My brothers Elijah and Nathaniel both have naturally inquisitive minds. They are always searching for answers and pondering life. They teach me how to think, not what to think. Both of them challenge my basic understandings and actions to always consider what we could do best or better.

Leongatha NewsA Note from AnthonyIn the past few days, I have been reminded again that this is a wonderful community to be a part of and work in. I had the privilege of touring a prospective family around the campus during lunchtime on Friday.

It was a beautiful, sunny day and the students were happy. There were three games of basketball happening and the sandpit was alive with activity and imaginative play. It is one thing for a family to hear about our welcoming and supportive culture, but it was lovely that they could see it first-hand.

This is the final newsletter of Term 3, so I wish all of you a happy and safe break.

AttendanceIn Victoria, schooling is compulsory for children and young people aged from 6–17 years. Sometimes, we can forget about the importance of daily school attendance. Why is daily attendance important?

• It helps students succeed in education and ensures that they don’t fall behind both socially and developmentally.

• Children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 (or an equivalent qualification) have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes and higher incomes across their lives.

• It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age.

• School participation is important as it maximises life opportunities for children and young people by providing them with education and support networks.

• School helps people to develop important skills, knowledge and values that set them up for further learning and participation in their community.

Don’t forget that we require parents/guardians to contact the office if your child is unwell or going to be away for any reason.Anthony Collier, Principal

Farewell John LongAs you know, John Long will be leaving us at the end of this term. He is a much-loved member of the staff team and will be missed.

John has been with the school for ten years and has been a key member of the teaching team. He has taught in numerous subject areas and his love for students and passion for discipleship, and occasional wearing of his underpants outside of his shorts, will be missed!

Please take the opportunity to thank John and wish him well in the next week.

Early Finish ReminderSchool finishes next Friday at 2.00 pm—one hour earlier than usual.

Backpack ChallengeWe had a wonderful day on the Saturday 1 September at Pioneers Hall. Students took on the challenge to live as refugees – building shelters, losing some of their gear and folding paper bags to earn their keep.

It was a great time of fun, laughter and competition. Thanks to Mrs Karapen and the student leadership team for organising the event.

Now it is time to collect all of the sponsorship money and return it to the office. We already have approximately $900 in donations from Expo, the school sausage sizzle and the walk through town.

At last check, there was roughly another $2,000 in donations online. So, we are very close to the $3000 mark. Remember we need $4,000 for Mrs Hibma to go pink and $5,000 for Mr Collier to go blue!

School Dental VisitThis week, all students received an information/application form regarding the school dental visit on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 October. Please ensure that you return the form before Wednesday 19 September.

Drouin Uniform ShopFor any parents wanting to purchase uniform over the school holidays, the uniform shop at the Drouin Campus will be open on the following days:

Primary ConcertOur Primary Concert—Something to Celebrate—will be held next Thursday 20 September at 7.00 pm in Pioneers Hall. Invite your family, friends and neighbours to join us for a time of dance and celebration.

Students need to have a black pair of pants, a bright single-coloured shirt and sneakers for their costumes. Pants and shirts should be brought to class as soon as possible so that students can be prepared for their full dress rehearsal.

From the Archives: Giliams Galore Over a period of 40 years, seven Giliam families provided the school with 27 students … and countless hours of voluntary support in many different ways.

In 1989–1991, there were 13 Giliam students—all related. No wonder teachers were confused! Then in 2005 and 2006 there were none, but most years there were at least two. With ex-student Gavin’s daughter starting Prep this year, there will be at least one Giliam for a few years yet.

• Len and Bertha Giliam: Gavin (1979–89), Timothy (1981–91), Leah (1985–94), Fiona (1989–95)

• Ted and Marijke Giliam: Andrea (1979–89), Natalie (1982–92), Olivia (1984–92)

• George and Inge Giliam: Matthew (1980–90), Rochelle (1984–93), Hailey (1987–96), Luke (1992–98)

• Sjirk and Antje Giliam: John (1982–83), Gina (1982–84), Anneke (1983–84)

• John and Kaye Giliam: Donna (1984–92), Cathryn (1986–92), Johannes (1988–91)

• Jan-Evert and Annie Giliam: Shane (1990–94), Allen (1990–96), Geoffrey (1991–98), George (1995–2001), Esther (1997–2003), Lisa (1998–2004)

• Gavin and Natalie Giliam: Hannah (2007–13), Ryan (2009–15), Chloe (2013– Year 5 in 2018), Isabella (started Prep in 2018)

Car Boot Sale and Market DayWe will be holding a Car Boot Sale and Market Day on Saturday 20 October from 8.30 am to 1.00 pm on our grounds in conjunction with the nationwide Garage Sale Trail. We are now accepting applications for car boots and outdoor stalls at $15 and indoor stalls at $20.

The goal of the Garage Sale Trail around Australia is to promote reuse and recycling of valuable resources, and help to ensure that those resources don’t end up in landfill before their time.

This event will have loads of pre-loved and recycled goods for sale. There will also be craft, local produce, baked goods, student-run stalls, new goods, hot food and free activities for children, including face painting, jumping castle, popcorn and fairy floss.
