Darwin Camp

I have had the very special privilege of participating in the Darwin Camp this year with 54 fantastic individuals; 46 Year 10 students, 5 teachers and 3 parent/adult helpers, Murray Macdonald, Vicki Hiscock and Tom McIntosh. The scenery and weather has been magnificent and I have learnt a lot about the Northern Territory - many different plants, insects and birds, including many crocodiles, jabiru, a blue-faced honeyeater, black kites, and herons and their night-time singing. I have learnt much more about our Aboriginal culture, the meaning behind some Aboriginal paintings and how the vegetation in the Kakadu and Litchfield areas is managed to maintain plant diversity as much as possible. I have learnt more about the involvement of Darwin and surroundings in the second World War.

More importantly I have got to know 54 personali-ties from the Maffra Secondary College community a lot better than before and to enjoy travelling and learning together with them. Kate Hodge has extensive knowledge of the area and is very ably assisted by the teachers on the camp, Sue Clancy, Andrew McIntosh, Veronica Hudson and Rachel Creaser. They have all worked tirelessly to enable the students to have a rich learning experience, Maffra Secondary College is very fortunate to have such hard working staff with expertise in the area who are willing to give up their time to organise and lead the camp, and parents and previous students who often help us out, in this case giving up 8 days of their busy lives to support the school.

This is yet again, another great attribute of the Maffra Secondary College community.

Broadening Horizons

Last year the Broadening Horizons program was very successful for our year 8 students. We are continuing the program in Term 3 this year with our 2015 year 8 students. To help the program be even more successful we would like to invite parents and community members who might like to be mentors to contact either Kylie Lambert or myself on 51 471 790. The role of a mentor entails visiting the students in their class in the first week, hopefully, and then, if possible, having at least one contact with the group each week for the following 6 weeks. This contact could be a visit or be via Skype, phone call or email. There will be a school tour for all new mentors at 9.30 am on Wednesday July 15th and the first session to meet the students is either at 11.00 am or at 2.00 pm that day.

We wish the teachers going to visit the Beloved School during the holidays, a safe and rewarding trip, and we wish the 10 students and one teacher, Jacinta Fleming, who will be participating in the Beijing Summer Camp a fantastic learning experience.

Some final words:

Thank you: - to students for all your efforts in semester 1 to make as much progress in your learning as possible; - to staff who have also worked hard on learning our new structure and contributed so positively to sour student’s learning environment and content during semester 1 as part of our new Strategic Plan, and - to families and members of our local community who have supported and encouraged students in their learning.

Have a great and well-earned holiday over the next two weeks.

Jeanette McNamara Reporting from sunny, warm Litchfield National Park, Northern Territory

I would like to thank the staff and students for all of the hard work that they have put into teaching and learning throughout this term. When I reflect on what has been an action packed term with many memorable moments both within and outside the classroom, I think about how lucky our students are to be at a school where learning opportunities come in a range of different forms. For example these consist of various programs, units of work, excursions, camps, sporting events, music performances, art shows and our spectacular school production, just to name a few. Thank you to everyone who makes Maffra SC such a wonderful place to be. It really exemplifies our College Purpose…‘More than they imagine” FAREWELLS

Today we say farewell to Tricia Newgreen, a wonderful teacher, role model, friend and colleague as she commences her well-deserved retirement after 30+ years of teaching at Maffra Secondary College. Throughout her time at MSC, Tricia has taught a multitude of students and subjects developing lifelong friendships. Her distinctive ‘bright’ clothing will be missed by all, as will her vibrant personality and ability to bring about change in a variety of areas. I personally would like to thank Tricia for her invaluable work in the area of Wellbeing across the school and her most recent work implementing School Wide Positive Behaviour Support. Tricia will be popping in from time to time throughout the remainder of the year to assist me to fulfil our commitment as a SWPBS mentor school. Tricia, on behalf of the whole College Community we would like to thank you for your dedication and devotion to the school, your students and teaching over the past 30 years. We wish you all the best in your retirement and we hope that you enjoy continuing to travel the world. We would also like to wish Kate Hodge and Maree Smith all the best as they go on maternity leave for the remainder of the year. Ladies, we look forward to meeting the new additions to your family later in Term 3. To Ron Wilson and Deborah Batt we wish them all the best and thank them for the work that they have done throughout terms 1 & 2. FUNDRAISER – THE BELOVED SCHOOL

The school community’s generosity never ceases to amaze me. Last week a casual day was held to celebrate Tricia’s teach-ing career. All of the money raised, along with the generous 5 cent coin donations equated to over $1400, will go to Tricia’s favourite charity - ‘The Beloved School’.

YEAR 8 BROADENING HORIZONS PROGRAM

This year, the year 8 students will be working on projects with local businesses to broaden their experiences and understanding of the roles people take in different careers. The program also aims to give our students an opportunity to develop and improve their 21st century employability skills, attitudes and knowledge. All year 8 students will be undertaking an investigation in their science classes in teams and will be expected to present their work at the Maffra Science Expo in August.

In this second year of the BH program, we have formed partnerships with the Gippsland Regional Development Victoria (RDV), the Wellington Shire Council (WSC) and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

OFFICIAL LAUNCH!

The Program was launched last week at the Maffra Memorial Hall where 114 students, mentors from our 3 business partners and MSC staff were in attendance. We listened to the experience from past students involved in the project, representatives from Wellington Shire Council about why they are involved this year, and the Year 8 students learnt more about what they are required to do for the project.

WORKPLACE VISITS

This week just under 100 Year 8 students visited the workplaces of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Wellington Shire Council to learn more about the variety of jobs in the local area. They met 11 staff members from DHHS and learnt about their roles in youth justice, disability services, child protection and community engagement. They spoke to 18 different Wellington Shire Council employees from dog wranglers in local law enforcement to human resource managers and horticulturists. The CEO David Morcom, a past Maffra Secondary College student, spoke to the students about the diversity of the employment opportunities in our local area. Students were able to meet the mentors who will be working with them on their projects next term.

WHAT’S NEXT?

We encourage Year 8 students to begin to plan their investigation over the holidays, decide on what topic you will investigate and come back to school in Term 3 ready to start! The investigation will follow the scientific method but already we have seen a diverse range of questions from the students including:

- What effect does Facebook have on adolescent’s wellbeing? - Does the 5 second rule work? - How will our local community react to a deadly virus outbreak?

Important dates include:

Wed 15th July: Meet the Mentors Day July-Aug: Students work on investigations, mentors visit MSC Thurs 20th Aug: Maffra Science Expo

We encourage parents to get involved in their children’s learning – please ask questions, take part in their investigations and ask to visit the school. We will be asking you to assess your child’s final piece at the Expo in August.

We thank our partners very much for their enthusiasm and commitment to work together with us towards improved student engagement and aspiration using practical experiences. We look forward to the support, interest and encouragement by parents and families of their students in their Broadening Horizons Project.

Anyone who thinks they might like to be a partner or mentor for this project is welcome to ring Kylie Lambert or Jeanette McNamara on 51471790.

YR 10

LATER YEARS

HUMANITIES Maree Smith This week we have been celebrating and promoting the diverse subject of HUMANITIES.

Humanities exposes our students to an extensive range of subjects, skills and vital life-learning. In our Humanities classrooms, we could be studying anything from ancient civilisations, to war histories, to the Declaration of Human Rights, to the plight of refugees, to politics, to the ANZAC Centenary, to small businesses, to mapping skills, to penguins in Antarctica… the list is endless!

Clearly, Humanities classrooms encourage our students to engage with the world around them in a variety of ways. We also strive to foster in our students skills such as researching, presenting, communicating, reading, analysing and questioning. We encourage students to be inquisitive, to connect, to understand and to empathise.

During Humanities Week, students have had the opportunity to engage in activities outside the classroom, such as ‘Horrible Histories’ viewings at lunchtimes, a ‘Who/What/Where/When’ competition and ‘Mystery Object’ identification.

We encourage all of our Maffra Secondary College students to continue their efforts and maintain and feed their inquiring Humanities minds!

WHAT IS HEALTH AND BIOMEDICAL INFOMATICS? This is a new area of study which uses infor-mation to improve health care and to give insights into the causes of disease. Digital technology in the future will greatly affect health care, as it has banking and insurance, for example. Some of the challenges in medicine are earlier diagnosis, more personalised therapies, better clinical trials, risk profiling, and controlling health system costs. Biomedical information involves nano infomatics, imaging, clinical information and public health information; these can be used to stop people dying due to inadequate IT systems. This is a career for those wanting to combine ICT with biomedical information. See: www.healthcareitnews.com/news/why-informatics-top-new-career.

PROM

This year’s School Prom was held at the Maffra Football Club Rooms on the 19th June. The James Bond 007 themed evening was very successful. It was a great opportunity for students to socialise, dress-up and have fun. A very successful evening. I big thank you to the students and staff who organised and supervised the event!

Dear Parents We would like to ask for your co-operation in an important matter. One of the children in community is currently receiving medical treatment which puts them at serious risk if they are exposed to infectious illnesses, in particular: chicken-pox, measles, mumps or shingles. For chicken-pox, shingles and measles a special protective injection is available for this child, however, it is only effective if given within 72 hours of exposure, and only lasts for one month. If your child is suspected of having one of these illnesses it is very important that they do not attend school. It is also important that while your child is unwell they remain at home until they are no longer contagious. If your child has chicken-pox, measles, mumps or shingles or suspected of having an illness please contact the school immediately. As a school community we value your support in relation to the wellbeing of all our students. Please don’t hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions. Slapped Cheek Disease A Student at the College has been diagnosed with Slapped Cheek Disease. Please see below for some basic information, school exclusion is not required. Slapped cheek disease is a viral infection. It results from being infected with human parvovirus B19. It causes a bright red rash on the cheeks, which look as though they have been slapped – hence the name. The incubation period for slapped cheek disease is usually between four and 14 days after contact (in rare cases, up to 21 days). This infection is also called slapped face disease, slapped cheek syndrome, Erythema Infectiosum or fifth disease. Generally for most children, infection with slapped cheek disease initially causes little more than cold symptoms but can include fever tiredness, aching muscles and headache. Symptoms for teenagers and adults can include arthritis-like symptoms, such as swollen ankles, knees and wrist joints. This complication is more common in female teenagers and adults, and is sometimes the only symptom of infection. *Contracting the virus is serious for people with specific conditions such as pregnancy, weakened immunity, undergoing cancer treatments and haemolytic blood disorders. Medical advice should be sought in these instances. Please contact the school if your child is diagnosed with this condition Rarely, if a pregnant woman gets this infection, there can be serious consequences to her unborn child, including miscarriage. Most unborn babies are not affected, even when they get this infection. For further information please see:
