BRIEF HISTORY OF GARKI VILLAGEGarki village is one of the old settlements in Abuja. It was originally occupied by the Gbagyi people who are the aborigines of the area. However with the relocation of the Federal capital territory from Lagos to Abuja, rural- urban migration has turned the slum to a multi cultural habitat.

ACTIVITIES EMBARKED UPONThe learners embarked on a community work by cleaning the environment, interviews were conducted and the slum dwellers responded positively to the questions asked.

IDENTIFIED EFFECTS OF SLUMSThe problem identified by the learners includes, inability of the slum dwellers to socialize with others due to stigmatization and discrimination, high level of poverty, lack of access to loans and credit facilities, poor housing and drainage facilities.

PROFERRED SOLUTIONS1. The government should provide good roads, hospitals and drainage systems.2. Avenues should also be provided to create awareness on sex education and family planning to prevent over population, congestion and spread of sexual transmitted diseases.3. Community works, such as regular environmental sanitation exercise should be encouraged among slum dwellers. Dustbins should be placed in strategic places and authorities made to come and pack them, in order to make F.C.T a homeS for all.4. The government should provide low cost houses for slum dwellers.

LEARNERS PROJECTIONS ON URBAN SLUM In the next twenty years the percentage of urban slums will decrease to the barest minimum level, if not completely eradicated, provided the government has an implemented policy on urban slum.

PRODUCTSStudents will plant trees at strategic places. They will also leas with the Abuja environmental sanitation board to enhance frequent refuse collections.

BRIEF HISTORY OF KADO VILLAGEKado village is headed by a village chief named Esu Dalami Audu. It is one of the settlements occupied mainly by the Gbagyis; other inhabitants are the Hausas, Madas, Gwandaras and Tivs They all engage in one economic activity or the other

ACTIVITIES EMBARKED UPONThe learners visited Kado Village slum, interviewed the chief of the village and other slum dwellers, acted a play let on the environment, embarked on a placard campaign as well as a cleaning exercise, all to ascertain challenges faced by the slum dwellers, such as health, drainage, crime, housing and level of poverty.

IDENTIFIED EFFECTS OF SLUMSProblems identified by the learners includes, sicknesses such as malaria and typhoid fever, poor roads, housing, drainage, electricity, and environmental chal lenges.

PROFERRED SOLUTIONS1. The government should take positive steps towards assisting the slum dwellers by providing hospitals, good road networks, make the place habitable and conducive for living, organizing regular community based environmental exercises. 2. Avenues should also be provided to create awareness on sex education and family planning to prevent over population, congestion and spread of sexual transmitted diseases.3. Community oriented development projects should also be embarked upon. 4. The government should also provide micro- finance banks to take care of the basic needs of the slum dwellers.

LEARNERS PROJECTIONS ON URBAN SLUM In the nearest future, it is hoped that slums will no longer be part of the urban settlement with the cooperation of the government and other stakeholders in the society.

PRODUCTSLearners will revisit the area to ascertain if the slum dwellers have been able to adhere to the new development. the level of compliance with environmental sanitation issues discussed with the slum dwellers, as a form of follow up. Efforts will also be made to contact the relevant authorities on how they could be assisted.

BRIEF HISTORY OF UTAKO VILLAGEUtako village is one of the slum settlements in Abuja. It is occupied by people of different cultural backgrounds and tribes namely the Hausas, Igbos, Yorubas and the Gbagyis who are the early settlers in the area, all the inhabitants engage in one economic activity or the other to earn a living.

ACTIVITIES EMBARKED UPONThe learners visited Utako Village slum, carried out interviews, to ascertain challenges faced by the slum dwellers such as health, drainage, crime, housing and others. Cleaning exercises were also conducted to create awareness among the inhabitants.

IDENTIFIED EFFECTS OF SLUMSProblems identified by the learners include shelter, electricity, and harassment by tax force, poverty, pickpockets, and others.

PROFERRED SOLUTIONS1. The government should take positive steps towards assisting the slum dwellers by providing low-cost housing accommodation, good security, proper drainage facilities and other social amenities. 2. Avenues should also be provided to create awareness on sex education and family planning to prevent over population, congestion and spread of sexually transmitted diseases.3. Community works, such as regular environmental sanitation exercise should be encouraged among slum dwellers.
