The ability to quickly identify vehicles and return them to their rightful owners can reduce costs for police forces in areas such as storage and litigation issues relating to the retention of a vehicle. With the loss of stolen vehicle resources throughout the UK, this course aims to re-introduce and re-train personnel cost effectively.

Who is the course aimed at?

The course will appeal to wide range of law enforcement personnel such as vehicle examiners, ports officers, RPU and rural crime officers, PCSO’s or any LEO who is likely to come into contact with stolen vehicles.

Course coverage:

• Understanding health and safety protocols before, during and after re-etching• Camera set up to photograph identification numbers• VIN number casting using Isomark and evidence preparation of the cast• Stamping effects on the molecular structure of metal• Metal preparation for re-etching; steel, aluminium and cast iron• Chemical or thermal restoration statement preparation.

Course cost per delegate - £250* ex VATCertification costs - IMI - £22.00

Membership of IMI open to successful students.

The ability to quickly identify suspect vehicles greatly enhances operational effectiveness and empowers individuals to make time critical decisions which impact financially on their employers. This course gives attendees the skills required and will also lead them into areas of evidence gathering for production at court.

Who is the course aimed at?

This course will appeal to a wide range of law enforcement frontline staff including intelligence staff and those using DVLA, PNC and other record keeping systems on a regular basis. Additionally of benefit to other agencies involved in the investigation of reported stolen vehicles, or vehicle related crime e.g. insurance, leasing and financing companies.

The course, developed following demands from agencies for greater understanding and confidence when stopping vehicles, aims to introduce students to the topic in a cost effective manner and covers most aspects of detailed vehicle identification both physical and photographic.

Course coverage:

• Nature and extent of vehicle theft in the UK and wider• DVLA registration system• Understanding / interpreting vehicle chassis number• Use of PNC-VODS as an investigative tool• ‘PNC Corruption’• Open source databases relating to vehicles• Common ‘ringing’ methods. (Physical and paper)• Recognition of fake or altered chassis numbers and plates• Use of basic vehicle examiners tool kit• Health and safety awareness re vehicle examinations• Preliminary vehicle examination• Written inspection report and evidential statement preparation.

The course provides the knowledge to select and correctly identify suspect machinery, whether on patrol or during road check, raid or port and is accredited with the IMI.

Who is the course aimed at?This course will appeal to a wide sector of personal within law enforcement such as roads policing, ports, customs, FIB, PCSOs, SOCO, vehicle examiners, etc.

Course coverage:• The nature and extent of plant theft• Rational selection - What to stop!• Preliminary roadside check - What to look for• Recognition of fake and altered chassis numbers• Recognition of fraudulent and tampered chassis plates• Understanding paints and primers• Effective use of the £10 tool kit• Designations and terminology• Understanding the CESAR Scheme and its’ importance in vehicle identification• Other plant databases and the implications of using them• Understanding of chemical and thermal restoration• Ageing a machine at the roadside• Pro-active and re-active security• Health and Safety - the dangers surrounding plant

The course runs over 2 days and is a mix of theory and practical. Students are required to fill out a workbook, and sit an end of course multiple choice examination.
