What is the data in Athletics?

• Federation’s details, athlete’s data, etc…

• Structure and Results of the competitions

• Processing of the results: bests lists, rankings, cross reference, etc…

• Curation of the data: data to be updated due to doping offences, transfer of allegiance, change of name, etc…

EUROPEAN ATHLETICS Mission Statement

• Map the situation of results collection and distribution in Europe. Survey the federations

• Identify the weaknesses and offer solutions

• Create synergies, activate the community and raise awareness

• Inform about regulations. Educate. Advise

Why?

Improve how athletics data is handled

• Collect more consistent data (Best Lists, Qualification process) for European Athletics database (hosted by Tilastopaja)

• Provide data to the RANKING project: 300+ competitions a year

Current situation:

o 50 meetings uploaded automatically

o 200 meetings manually (website copy/paste, pdf…)

Why?

Development of Member Federation

• Raise the IT standard of the federations

• Give them tools to manage their federations

• Improve the way they manage statistics: hosting, publication

This will help federations save time and grow the sport

European Athletics Ecosystem

51 Member Federations

European Athletics Statistics database(managed by Tilastopaja)

EA Meetings(Classic, Premium)

IAAF meetings(DL, World Challenge)

150 National Meetings

National Champs

International Competitions (IAAF WC, Universiades,

EYOF, etc…

How do we receive results?

• Automatic data exchange

current limitation: ad-hoc data format

• By e-mail (xml, xls, doc, pdf)

• Results collected through tools

current limitation: very early stage

Automatic data exchange: FIN, EST, FRA, CZE, POL, UKR

Advanced collaboration : DEN, IRL

Central system, but no automatic export: AUT, BUL, GBR, GRE, ISL, LAT, NED, NOR, POR, ROM, SLO, ESP

Countries with no central system/sporadic results: ALB, AND, ARM, AZE, BLR, BIH, CRO, CYP, GEO, LTU, LUX, MLT, MDA, MNE, RUS, SVK, SWE

Countries no sending anything/format unusable: BEL, ITA, HUN, GER, SUI, ISR, TUR

No contact yet: GIB, KOS, LIE, MKD, MON, SMR

What we want to achieve

• Receive the results in an AUTOMATED way from federations

(If they have a centralized system)

• Develop tools for federations to use

• Make our statistician happy

Improve through collaboration

In 2016, the plan was to:

• create a standard for everyone to use

• create tools for federations

• grow the community

OpenTrack Community Deliverables

In 2017, we delivered a interexchange data standard

OpenTrack Community Deliverables

We developed a standard with the World Wide Web Consortium, ReportLab

• Common standards to represent and share the information among stakeholders

• Define the basic schemas and vocabularies to describe the world of athletics

• Validate the standard by w3c community to make it global

• Release: January 2018

Development of the community

The KPIs to measure the growth of the community:

• 2 federations in 2015 had automated data exchange . We have 8 federations now

• 10 federations were active with us in 2015 against 40 federations in 2017

• 5 federations attended the data conference in 2016. 13 federations attended in 2017!!!

• (CRO, CZE, ESP, EST, FIN, GER, GRE, IRL, ISL, ITA, POL, POR, UKR)

AthTech 2017

First findings from last week’s conference…………..

• Need for legal advice on GDPR (in force from May 2018)

• Data protection best practice: “Results are transferable unlimitedly”

• Continue with the standard. It is now expected by January 2018

AthTech 2017

…………..further findings from last week’s conference
