PURPOSE

The purpose of this Data Overview is to inform the audience of the strengths, the weaknesses, and the comparisons to both state and district results concerning consecutive counting to 100 at Kids R Kids West Cobb. The grade level and content that will be investigated and presented throughout the Data Overview will be the private Pre-K program. This program consists of two classes of 3 -5 year old students and enrolls no more than 36 students per year. The current number of students enrolled in the program is 30. An analysis of the students’ consecutive counting abilities up to 100 was completed on March 19, 2013. Comparisons will be made with other private pre-k programs within the school, district (Kids R Kids East Cobb), and the state(Georgia Lottery-Funded Program).

THE ASSESSMENT

Private Pre-K students were presented with an individual assessment to count by ones consecutively to 100. Each student was pulled aside and counted one-on-one with the teacher to their individual limit. If the student asked for assistance or accidentally skipped a number. The teacher noted that fact and for all purposes of the assessment, the student had reached his or her limit of counting consecutively. The following graphs break down the results of the Private Pre-K Counting Consecutively to 100 assessment.

Based on the results of this assessment, a few facts are certain. The first fact being that 93.3% of the Private Pre-K students currently enrolled have mastered a consecutive counting level higher than any student in the Georgia Lottery-Funded Pre-K Program is ever asked to complete.

The second fact about the results is that 43.3% of the students currently enrolled in the Private Pre-K Program are counting on a Kindergarten grade level. Educators are asked to teach students to count to 100 during the kindergarten school year (Georgia Department of Education, 2012).

WHAT DO THESE RESULTS MEAN?

While there is an obvious success in the assessment in comparison to other programs, there is a concern and area of improvement that needs to be addressed. There is still a needed improvement in the children who are not counting to 100 yet. This year the Education Director decided to advance the curriculum and abide by the Kids R Kids International Kindergarten standards. Therefore, the goal for the year was for all students to be functioning on that level. The concern is for those students (56.6%) that are not able to count to 100. From the results of this analysis, the Education Director has decided to implement more scaffolding into the small groups in which these students currently function in hopes of helping them obtain this goal by the end of the year.

HOW DO THESE NUMBERS COMPARE?

Another option at Kids R Kids West Cobb for our Pre-K students is the Georgia Lottery-Funded Pre-K Program. In the Georgia Lottery-Funded Pre-K program, students are only asked to investigate numbers up to 20. Consecutive counting is practiced and sometimes mastered. All children within this program are four years old as of September 1, 2012. Therefore, some of the students who fall into this category are four and the remainder of students are five years old. The basis of the Georgia Pre-K program to is learn through play. The next slide shows the results of the same consecutive counting assessment performed on the Private Pre-K program.

HOW DO THESE NUMBERS COMPARE?

There is another Kids R Kids center that offers the same curriculum as the location discussed in the Data Overview. The location chosen for this project to compare results is Kids R Kids East Cobb. This location has two Private Pre-K classrooms as well that may enroll as many as 36 students. Currently, there are 34 students enrolled in this program at the East Cobb location. This location was selected because of the accessibility of data and direct alignment with curriculum of the West Cobb location. None of the other Kids R Kids locations contacted were able to give data on the ability levels of the Private Pre-K Program in regards to consecutive counting to 100. Therefore, the following graph breaks down the data gathered from the Kids R Kids East Cobb consecutive counting assessment.

IN CLOSING

Before placing your child in a Pre-K program, whether it be private or state funded, do the research to make sure of the effectiveness of the curriculum being implemented. Weigh out your options as a family concerning the educational benefits, financial concerns, and social interactions. Your child’s Pre-K education lays the pathway for your child’s education for the rest of his or her life. It is an important decision that deserves completing the research before placing your child into a Pre-K program.
