Strengthening capacity in data analysis, surveillance and epidemiology is a key recommendation from health ministers of the region. In response, regional partners of the Pacific Public Health Surveillance Network (PPHSN) have redeveloped the data for decision-making (DDM) training programme for the Pacific. The DDM forms a component of the Strengthening Health Interventions in the Pacific (SHIP) Programme.
Building core public health functionsThe purpose of the SHIP programme is to build core public health functions in Pacific Island countries and territories for the long-term improvement of the effectiveness of national health services.
Applicable to communicable and non-communicable diseasesThe redeveloped DDM modules are designed to improve in-country surveillance and health information systems, and cover both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Accredited by FNUParticipants who complete course modules and a surveillance project receive accreditation from Fiji National University – up to a post-graduate certificate in data for decision-making (DDM).
Course curriculumThe DDM programme consists of four course modules plus a surveillance project:1. Public health surveillance 2. Responding to public health alerts3. Basic applied epidemiology and data analysis (with in-country data)4. Intermediate applied epidemiology and data analysis (with in-country data)
Who can attendThe programme is designed for health professionals who work with health information and data (e.g. communicable disease, non-communicable disease, maternal and child health, environmental and clinical data). This may include the collection, entry, analysis, use of data and public health response.
Benefits for participants and their institutionsAcquire adequate knowledge and skills to:
• Detect and respond to public health emergencies, such as disease outbreaks and the non-communicable disease crisis.
• Collect, analyse, interpret, communicate and use health data for the purpose of decision-making.
• Evaluate and strengthen surveillance systems.
