OF US WOULD AGREE THATcommunication is key to any growing and healthy relationship. Prayer is one of the primary ways we can engage with God, yet many of us struggle in this area of our relationship with him. We want to learn to pray better. Over the next 40 days, including five weeks of devotionals and small group guides, we will journey as a church. We will look at how to pray God’s Word, letting that guide our conversation with our Father. We would encourage you to set time aside each day to draw near to God and pray. Use this guide to help direct your personal time. You will also find Small Group materials included. These will help us as we learn to pray in community. Space is provided to write some thoughts, prayers, and reminders.

La mayoría de nosotros estaríamos de acuerdo en que la comuni-cación es clave en una relación saludable que está creciendo. La oración es una de las maneras primarias por la cual nos comuni-camos con Dios, pero la verdad es que muchos de nosotros lu-chamos con esta parte de nuestra relación con Él. DAY ONE

May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.Hebrews 13:20-21

When I think about cultivating my prayer life, my mind immediately goes to the idea of creating and maintaining a prayer list. After all, I need to be able to keep up with who I’m praying for and what I’m asking God to do. Right? But when I start there, I make prayer more about getting something from God than communing with God. It becomes more about receiving and less about relationship. My praying should be so much more than offering God a “to do” list. It should be an intimate conversation with my loving Father, where our relationship and love grows deep and strong.

This prayer from Hebrews 13 begins by directing me to focus on who God is and what he has done. This helps me begin my conversation with God by adoring him. God of peace. What an incredible place to start. He is the God of peace. Though I was once his enemy, he has reconciled me and made peace through the sacrifice of Jesus. Colossians 1:19-20, “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to rec-oncile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” I have peace with God because he is the God of peace. But I also have inner peace, even when I am surrounded by turmoil. Isaiah 26:3, “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.” Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Real, lasting peace comes from him.

So as you pray this prayer today, let your eyes and heart be full of this – he is the God of peace. The giver of peace. The sustainer of peace. Draw near with a heart full of faith.

DÍA UNO

Y el Dios de paz, que resucitó de entre los muertos a Jesús nuestro Señor, el gran Pastor de las ovejas mediante la sangre del pacto eterno, os haga aptos en toda obra buena para hacer su voluntad, obrando El en nosotros lo que es agradable delante de El mediante Jesucristo, a quien sea la gloria por los siglos de los siglos. Amén. Hebreos 13:20-21

Hace varios años, enfrentamos la realidad que nuestros cuatro hijos y nosotros nos encontrábamos en cinco países diferentes, algunos muy con-flictivos, y que no podíamos cuidar a ninguno de ellos. Aunque fue difícil, pudimos experimentar el gozo de tener paz. Comprendimos que nuestros hijos estaban más seguros en las manos de Dios que en nuestras propias manos débiles. El Señor nos llenó de una paz increíble que el mundo no puede dar.

Qué hermoso es experimentar la paz que Dios nos da. Él es el Dios de paz. Jesús nos dijo en Juan 14:27 “La paz os dejo, la paz os doy, no como el mundo la da.”

Cuando los discípulos vieron resucitado a su maestro, se llenaron de paz al presenciar el poder del Dios que levantó a su Hijo de entre los muer-tos. De la misma manera nosotros podemos confiar en Dios en cualquier circunstancia que pasemos, ya sea enfermedad, problemas económicos, ausencia de familia o algún problema que tengamos.

1) Piensa en tu propia experiencia y en tu vida. Pídele a Dios que te dé la paz que sólo Él puede dar, que te ayude a confiar en Él. Preséntale tu necesidad y dale gracias por lo que Él va a hacer. Ora por los hermanos de Summit en Español para que ellos también aprendan a gozar la paz de Dios en sus vidas.

2) Dale gracias a Dios porque Él tiene poder para darnos una esperanza viva “por medio de la resurrección de Jesucristo de entre los muertos” (1Pedro 1:3). ¿Cuál es esta esperanza por la que le das las gracias? Ora que los hermanos de Summit en Español comprendan y compartan esta esperanza.

DAY TWO


We all have people in our lives who only reach out to us when they need something. We only hear from them when they have a request. We love them, and we’re happy to help. But it sure would be nice to have a con-versation with them that wasn’t all about what they need. Before I charge into making my requests, I need to remember who God is and what he has done. His character and his work in the past stir my heart to love and adore him. My praise brings delight to God and it is good for me, too. Knowing and treasuring God is so much better than using him. Reflecting on his heart and his deeds also help me understand his priorities and his purposes. That way I can make sure I’m making requests that are in line with who he is and what he wants to do.

This prayer in Hebrews 13 reminds me that he is the God “who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus”. I am not approaching a God who has made a contract with me. He does not hear or act because I’ve kept my end of the bargain. He is a God who has made a covenant with me by the blood of his Son. Hebrews 9:15, “For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.” And he is a God of great power, resurrection power that he purposes to use in us. Ephesians 1:19-20, “His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms.”

As you approach God today, delight in the covenant that he has made with you. Bask in his great love. And let his resurrection power strengthen and encourage you. Repeat this truth. Praise your God.

DÍA DOS


El gran pastor de las ovejas.

Se dice que la ovejas son los animales más tontitos que hay. Necesitan muchísimo cuidado y guía. Un pastor es un hombre dedicado a su rebaño y con mucha paciencia y cuidado pasa las horas atendiendo a sus ovejas.En Mateo 18:10-14 el Señor Jesucristo nos relata la parábola de la oveja perdida y cómo el buen pastor, que tiene 100 ovejas, deja las 99 y sale al peligro a buscar a su ovejita hasta que la encuentra. El Señor termina la parábola diciéndonos: “Así es la voluntad de vuestro Padre que no se pierda ninguno de estos pequeños.”

En Juan 10:10 Jesús nos dice: “Yo soy el buen pastor. El buen pastor su vida da por las ovejas”.

¡Qué alegría es saber esto! Jesús nos amó tanto que dejó su gloria y como el Buen Pastor “en su bondad, al mundo malo descendió, y del abismo de maldad, mi alma rescató, ¡Me levantó!” Así dice el himno antiguo que mi padre cantaba a menudo cada vez que recordaba el hermoso día de su sal-vación como un joven de 21 años perdido y solo. Lo levantó y lo perdonó.

1) Agradécele a Dios que mandó a su Hijo al mundo malo para salvar tu alma. Ora por los miembros de Summit en Español para que lleven a sus amigos y familiares a conocer al Gran Pastor para que puedan así tener la salvación por medio de Jesucristo.

2) Ora para que Summit en Español crezca en número y que haya personas nuevas que puedan escuchar el evangelio y acepten al Señor.

DAY THREE


One key to good communication is knowing your audience. What we know about a person affects what we are willing to share and even how we say it. I am most free to share my heart and most willing to be vulnerable when I trust the heart and know the character of the person with whom I am speaking. Often, the best place for me to start my praying is recalling and reciting the heart and character of God as revealed in his Word and his actions.

This prayer from Hebrews 13 reminds me that I am praying to the “great Shepherd of the sheep.” God has revealed in his Word and by his work that he has the heart and character of a good shepherd. Psalm 23, The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” My shepherd provides, protects, guides, renews, disciplines and comforts me. My shepherd has already laid down his life for me. He is my shepherd and I am his sheep. Oh what incredible joy and hope comes in knowing this – I am his and he is mine.

So draw near today, full of faith. He is your good shepherd; you are his sheep. He is your loving father; you are his cherished child. Say it out loud. Call him by name. Oh, how great is his goodness and love for us.

DÍA TRES


Ver sangre derramada le causa horror a la mayoría de las personas. Es ter-rible presenciar asesinatos, accidentes o enfermedades que implican el derramamiento de sangre.

Hubo un derramamiento de sangre, igual de cruel que los descritos, pero que se convirtió en sublime y precioso, por ser el medio que usó el Padre al sacrificar a su Hijo para perdonarnos de nuestros pecados.

Un himno dice:

“Hay una fuente carmesíDe sangre de EmanuelQue purifica a cada cualQue se sumerge en El.”

Así cumplió Dios la promesa de salvación hecha a los antiguos.

Este sacrificio sangriento, si lo aceptamos en nuestro lugar, nos capacita para vivir una vida agradable a Dios, obedeciéndolo en todo, haciendo su voluntad. Esto implica estar listos a que Él nos guíe en todo, haciendo buenas obras y siendo un ejemplo para los que aún no llegan a esta fuente.

1) Alaba al Señor porque derramó su sangre por nosotros.

2) Ora que seas una persona que le obedece al Señor en todo y que estés listo(a) para hacer buenas obras que lo alaben a Él.

3) Ora por los hermanos en Summit en Español para que estén compro-metidos con Cristo y su vida lo demuestre.

DAY FOUR


Focusing my mind and heart on the character and work of God puts me in the best possible place to then ask for his intervention in my life and the life of others. But why is that? First, it helps me to put everything in per-spective. Too many times I approach prayer overwhelmed by my circum-stances and underwhelmed by God. No circumstance in my life is bigger than God. How much better it is to present my requests to God after I have adored and worshipped him, letting my heart and mind be filled with his greatness. Second, this approach to prayer puts me in a position to see and know the purposes of God. When I have an idea of his purposes, as revealed in his character and his works, then I can begin to pray in a way that intersects with what I know about who God is and what he does.

This prayer from Hebrews 13 offers me a way to intercede with confi-dence. Asking God to “equip you with everything good for doing his will” is a request we can be sure God delights to grant. In fact, 2 Peter 2:3-4 tell us that “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” We can be sure that God desires that we live a godly life and that he has and will equip us for that. But God also equips us for the purpose of building up the Body of Christ.

“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” Ephesians 4:11-12

So as you pray today, consider what God has revealed regarding his pur-poses. As you present your requests, do so in light of what you know to be the purposes of God. Ask God to do all that is in his heart to do. Plead with him to fulfill his dreams for you and for others.

DÍA CUATRO


“. . . haciendo Él en vosotros”

Muy a menudo enfrentamos problemas o situaciones con mucha energía y decisión o con mucha preocupación y desánimo.

Hacemos todo lo que podemos o aún más de lo que podemos para sólo alcanzar un fin equivocado o no lograr nada por esfuerzo propio. Por fin nos rendimos y escuchamos al Señor, el único que puede darnos la buena salida a nuestras situaciones. ¡Qué pena es haber perdido tanto tiempo, esfuerzo, emociones y muchas veces dinero, durante este tiempo!

El Señor Jesús nos prometió “estar con nosotros todos los días hasta el fin del mundo”. (Mateo 28:20) y si lo escuchamos, Él nos puede ayudar. En 1 Pedro 1:5 el apóstol Pablo nos dice “Echando todas nuestra ansiedades sobre Él, porque Él tiene cuidado de vosotros”. ¡Qué preciosas promesas!

A la vez podemos estar seguros que Cristo sigue trabajando en nosotros. “Aquel que comenzó en vosotros la buena obra, la perfeccionará hasta el día de Jesucristo”. Él es el que hace los cambios en nuestra vida. ¡Tenemos esperanza!

1) Dale gracias al Señor porque Él está contigo.

2) Agradécele por hacer la buena obra en ti.

3) Dale gracias al Señor porque por medio de Él que te amó, eres más que vencedor. (Romanos. 8:37).

4) Ora por tres personas con quienes quieres compartir estas verdades.

DAY FIVE


I am convinced that I was made for luxury and comfort. I hate conflict. I prefer the path of least resistance. I despise weakness. I’m uncomfortable with need. That may seem to you like a ridiculous thing to verbalize. But let’s be honest, that’s what much of our praying screams. And if we aren’t demanding it for ourselves, we’re pleading it for those we love. Unless we take some corrective steps in our praying, we will naturally turn back in on ourselves and make our praying all about our comfort.

These verses for Hebrews give me a radically different pattern for prayer: The character and work of God applied to the purposes of God for the pleasure and glory of God. The end of this prayer challenges me. “May he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” God delights to fulfill his purposes in us. He takes great pleasure in the work of redemption and renewal that he has begun in. And what he started, he fully intends to finish. Philippians 1:6, “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.“ In the end, he will be glorified. His name alone will be worshipped and praised. Jude 1:24-25, “To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.” My praying must be recalibrated and aimed at the pleasure and glory of God, not the pleasure and glory of me.

Let Hebrews 13:20-21 guide your praying today. Adore your God. Surren-der to his purposes. And abandon your selfish desires to his pleasure and his glory.

“Lo que es agradable delante de Él por Jesucristo, al cual sea la gloria por los siglos de los siglos.”

¿Qué es lo que le agrada a Dios? “Que creáis en el que Él ha enviado” (Juan 6:28).

Cuando esto sucede en nuestras vidas, estamos dispuestos a darle a Dios la gloria que se merece.

Nadie puede adorar al Padre sin recibir a su Hijo. El que no acepta a Jesucristo en su corazón, ofende al Padre. Jesucristo es digno de recibir la gloria. En el libro de Apocalipsis se encuentran las alabanzas más pre-ciosas de toda la Biblia. La visión de Juan nos describe al Cordero que murió pero que volverá como Rey triunfante. Nos muestra la gloria que el Cordero recibirá por siempre de toda tribu, lengua, y nación.

Apocalipsis 5:12, 13, 14

1) Pasa unos minutos adorando al Señor de Señores.

2) Comprométete con Cristo para hacer lo que a Él le agrada. Examina tu vida y entrégale a Él cualquier área que necesite ser entregada.

DAY ONE

“Pray then like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.’”Matthew 6:9

The Gospels make frequent mention of Jesus’ prayers. Matthew 6:9-13 is significant because, in this moment, Jesus invites us to share in his prayer life. Yes, Jesus—the perfect Son of God—demonstrates for us in practi-cal ways how to commune with the divine in prayer. These words, part of Christ’s intercession for us (Romans 8:34), are an offer for us to pray alongside our Lord. Matthew 6:9-13 is his invitation to you today and al-ways.

“Our Father in heaven,”Jesus commences his prayer with a warm and affectionate appeal to God Almighty. Not only are we praying to the great and magnificent God of all, but this God who calls us his children! “How great is the love the Fa-ther has lavished on us that we should be called children of God” (1 John 3:1). God, our true father, desires that we come to him with authentic requests from expectant hearts, not with pious phrases of religious duty. As you approach God our father today, may the posture of your heart be one of neediness, intimacy, and reverence.

“hallowed by your name.”Let us, along with our Lord, focus today on the overwhelming reality of God’s character, his majesty, and his glory. May our greatest longing and prayer on this earth be simply to proclaim the holiness of our Lord! Pro-claim today that he is Lord of all and his name alone is holy. Declare with all of creation—“Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righ-teous acts have been revealed” (Revelations 15:4).

Let us not be too quick to jump to what God can do for us. May we find confidence today merely in who he is. Sit and bask in the presence of God. Adore him, as a child to his father.

DÍA UNO

Vosotros, pues, oraréis así: “Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos, santificado sea tu nombre.” Mateo 6:9

Los evangelios frecuentemente mencionan las oraciones de Cristo. Mateo 6:9-13 es significante porque en ese momento, Jesus nos invita a presen-ciar su manera de orar. Cristo – el perfecto Hijo de Dios – nos demuestra en maneras prácticas como estar presentes en oración ante Dios. Estas palabras, parte de la intercesión de Cristo por nosotros (Rom. 8:34), son una invitación a orar junto con nuestro Señor. Mateo 6:9-13 es una invit-ación hoy y por siempre.

“Padre Nuestro que estás en los cielos”

Jesus comienza su oración con un llamado muy cariñoso y caluroso al Dios Todopoderoso. No sólo le estamos orando al grande y magnifico Dios de la creación, pero este Dios nos llama “sus hijos!” “Mirad cuál amor nos ha dado el Padre, para que seamos llamados hijos de Dios” (1 Juan 3:1). Dios, nuestro verdadero Padre, desea que vengamos a El con peticiones sinceras y corazones abiertos, no con frases piadosas de religiosidad. Al acercarte al Dios Padre hoy, deja que tu postura sea una de necesidad, intimidad, y reverencia.

“Santificado sea tu nombre”

Enfoquémonos hoy, junto con nuestro Señor, en la increíble realidad de su carácter, su majestad, y su gloria. ¡Qué nuestro anhelo y oración en esta tierra sea simplemente proclamar la santidad de nuestro Señor! Proclama hoy que Él es Señor de toda la creación y que Su nombre solamente es Santo. Declara con toda la creación, “¿Quién no te temerá, oh Señor, y glorificará tu nombre? pues sólo tú eres santo; por lo cual todas las nacio-nes vendrán y te adorarán, porque tus juicios se han manifestado” (Apoc-alipsis 15:4).

1) No empecemos este tiempo con peticiones. Primero, pasa un tiempo meditando simplemente en quien es Dios, en su presencia. Adóralo, como un niño a su Padre.

DAY TWO

‘Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’ Matthew 6:10

After proclaiming who God is and longing for his holy name to be pro-claimed, Jesus directs us to pray “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” What is this heavenly reality that our Lord desires to see manifest on the earth? In heaven, God reigns sovereignly and eternally. In heaven, Jesus Christ is alive forevermore, enthroned at God’s right hand. As we wait on earth today, longing to be fully united with Christ, let your prayers become pleas for an earthly reality that cor-responds to that of heaven. May we choose the eternal kingdom and not settle for earthly imitations. In order to advance the kingdom of God on earth, Christ must reign in the hearts and lives of his people.

Jesus also directs us to pray “your will be done.” To utter these words requires a pliable heart softened by the Spirit and grace of God. To pray “your will be done” means admitting that God is in control and we are not. Such dependence is neither easy, nor natural. Our everyday circum-stances in this fallen world try to dissuade us, beguiling us with the lie that we can make it on our own. How tempting it is for our lives to become about us and not about God. Jesus knew this better than anyone. Yet, he prays the same thing before thousands that he does in isolation in Geth-semane, “Not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39).

When life is painful, when it feels like God has forgotten you, he hasn’t. Our God is for us, not against us. And he always has what’s best in mind. Focus your prayers today on the heart of God, a heart that is working all things together for good (Romans 8:28).

DÍA DOS

Venga tu reino. Hágase tu voluntad, como en el cielo, así también en la tierra. Ma-teo 6:10

Después de proclamar quien es Dios y de anhelar que su Santo nombre sea exaltado, Jesús nos dirige a orar “Venga tu reino. Hágase tu voluntad, como en el cielo, así también en la tierra.” ¿Cuál es esta realidad celes-tial que nuestro Señor desea ver manifestada en esta tierra? En el cielo, Dios reina soberana y eternamente. En el cielo, Cristo vive eternamente, sentado a mano derecha del Padre. Mientras esperamos aquí en la tierra hoy, anhelando ser completamente unidos con Cristo, deja que tus oracio-nes sean súplicas, que nuestra realidad terrenal corresponda a la del cielo. Debemos escoger un reino eterno y no complacernos con imitaciones terrenales. Para avanzar el reino de Dios en la tierra, Cristo debe reinar en los corazones y en las vidas de su pueblo.

Orar “hágase tu voluntad” quiere decir admitir que Dios está en control de todo, y no nosotros. Esta dependencia no es o fácil o natural. Nuestras circunstancias diarias en esta tierra tratan de disuadirnos, de convencer-nos que podemos vivir sin Dios. ¡Qué tentador es que nuestras vidas se enfoquen en nosotros mismos y no en Dios! Cristo sabía esto mejor que cualquier persona. Aun así, Él ora igual ante miles de personas que cuando ora solo en Getsemaní: “no sea como yo quiero, sino como tú” (Mateo 26:39).

‘Give us this day our daily bread,’ Matthew 6:11

Many of us have a propensity to think ahead, plan in advance, and rarely consider the here-and-now. In contrast, Jesus looks to the Father and says: “Today. Provide what I need for today. Nothing more, nothing less.”

Such a request comes from a heart of patience. Ask God to breed trust and security in your heart today, as you look to him alone as the provider for your needs.

What do you need to make it through your day today? Physical provi-sions? Mental strength? Emotional stamina? Compassion? Discipline? Grace? As you consider what lies ahead of you today (and tomorrow and again the next day), surrender it all completely to the Lord. Look to him as your provider, as your guide, and as your refuge.

We are promised, “And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith” (Matthew 21:22).

After all, when God’s people were wandering through the desert fright-fully concerned about how they would get food to eat and live, God pro-vided—reigning down manna from the sky (Exudos 16). Note that God would only let the Israelites take as much manna as they needed for the day. He wanted them to depend not on the provision; but on the Provider. He wanted them to know he would provide for them every day.

The same God who made manna and quail fall from the sky is listening to you today. He is willing and able to provide. Turn to him with your requests today. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end” (Lamentations 3:22). His mercy is new for you again today, and great is his faithfulness for us.

A muchos de nosotros nos gusta pensar en el futuro y hacer planes, pero raramente consideramos el aquí y ahora. En contraste, Jesus mira al Padre y dice, “Hoy. Provee lo que necesito para hoy. Nada más y nada menos.”

La Palabra nos promete, “Y todo lo que pidiereis en oración, creyendo, recibiréis” (Mateo 21:22). Después de todo, cuando los Israelitas pasaron 40 años en el desierto, preocupados sobre qué iban a comer y cómo iban a vivir, Dios proveyó con maná que llovía del cielo (Éxodo 16). ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.’ Matthew 6:12

Whether we realize it or not, our lifestyle is an indicator of our heart’s posture. When we encounter the grace and mercy of God, we are moved to be more gracious and merciful.

To forgive someone from a debt is in essence setting them free. Thus, may today be a day of freedom.

First, spend time confessing your sins to God. What behaviors and thoughts are you tempted to hide from him? Ask the Spirit of God to search your heart and your mind. Jesus—the very one who had no sin debt of his own—was crucified to atone for your sin. Your sins were buried with him in the grave, and he rose three days later so that you can walk in freedom today. Articulate your gratitude to God for the freedom that is yours in Christ today. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Having reflected upon the freedom and forgiveness that God has shown you in the gospel of Jesus Christ, to whom can you impart freedom today? Is there a friend or loved one who you are reluctant to forgive? Perhaps even a passer-by when you’re at the coffee shop or running errands who needs burdens of sin lifted from their shoulders by the good news of the gospel. As the Holy Spirit guides you, intercede for those in your life who need to find rest in the triumphant Christ.

When your time of prayer is over, step forward with a heightened aware-ness of the freedom and forgiveness we have in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Aunque no nos demos cuenta, nuestro estilo de vida es una indicación de la postura de nuestro corazón. Cuando experimentamos la gracia y misericordia de Dios, somos impulsados a ofrecerles gracia y misericordia a otros.

Perdónar a tu prójimo una deuda es esencialmente darle su libertad. ¡Que cada día sea un día vivido en libertad – libertad dada y recibida!

1) Empieza tu tiempo en oración confesándole tus pecados a Dios. ¿Cuáles son las acciones o pensamientos a que eres tentado(a) a esconder? Pídele al Espíritu de Dios que escudriñe tu mente y corazón. Cristo, el único que no tuvo pecado o deuda propia, fue crucificado para lograr el perdón de tus pecados. Esos mismos pecados fueron enterrados con Él en la tumba, y Él resucitó tres días después para que puedas caminar en libertad hoy. Expésale tu gratitud a Dios por la libertad que es tuya en Cristo hoy. “Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios, que es fiel y justo, nos los perdonará y nos limpiará de toda maldad” (1 Juan 1:9).

2) Habiendo reflexionado sobre la libertad y el perdón que te ha dado Dios en Su evangelio, ¿a quién le puedes ofrecer libertad hoy? ¿Hay un amigo o ser amado a quien no has querido perdonar? ¿O tal vez hasta un extraño en tu vida diaria que necesita las buenas nuevas del evangelio? Deja que el Espíritu Santo te guíe en un tiempo de intercesión por aquellos en tu vida que necesitan descansar en Cristo y Su victoria.

‘And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’ Matthew 6:13

The Christian life is not easy. This life is a battle. We live in a dark and dying world and the road we walk is a narrow one with perilous cliffs on every side and our enemy, “The devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

Yet, we have no reason to despair. Remember: “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Jesus concludes his prayer in Matthew 6 with an earnest confession of God’s ability to save, protect, and deliver. God alone is capable of sparing us from temptation and de-livering us from evil.

In fact, God promises us that, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Pray for deliverance today. Pray for God to save—us, our family, our neigh-bors—but also pray for hearts that desire saving from this world. May we not be lured away by this world’s empty promises but may God grant us hearts that love and desire him all the more.

And turn to Jesus as the answer to your prayers. We have deliverance, salvation, rescue, restoration, and redemption in the resurrected Christ. He alone is our hope, our strength, and our refuge. Rest in his finished work today.

La vida de un creyente no es fácil, más bien es una batalla. Vivimos en un mundo oscuro y decaído, y nuestro camino es angosto con precipicios peligroso a ambos lados, y nuestro enemigo, “el diablo ronda como león rugiente, buscando a quién devorar” (1 Pedro 5:8).

Aun así, no hay por qué perder esperanza. Acuérdate, “el que está en ust-edes es más poderoso que el que está en el mundo” (1 Juan 4:4). Cristo concluye esta oración en Mateo 6 con una declaración sobre la habilidad de Dios para salvar, proteger, y rescatar. Únicamente Dios es capaz de protegernos de la tentación y librarnos del mal.

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him bet-ter. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. Ephesians 1:15-23

Too often, what provokes my prayers for others is the perception or awareness of need. Whether it is physical or a spiritual, it’s the knowledge of a need that causes me to pray. In Ephesians 1, Paul suggests an entirely different prompting for prayer. “Ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.” The testimony of faith and love causes him to overflow with thanksgiving and moves him to in-tercession. He is stirred to daily gratitude for those who have responded to the gospel in faith and are living that out in love for others.

Think of this as proactive rather than reactive. It is praying to build up and foster faith, and also the living out of that faith. It is recognizing where, and in whom, God is already working, expressing heartfelt thanks. It is also joining God in his work by interceding for those in whom he is working. This kind of praying not only impacts others, it also builds up my own faith. It helps me focus on what God is already doing and recog-nizing that he is faithfully working out his purposes all around me. I am spurred on to gratefully ask him to keep on working there and repeat that work in other places and other lives.

So where do you see God at work? In whom do you see evidence of faith and love? Don’t take that for granted and pass over it. Give thanks. Praise God for his marvelous deeds. And ask him to continue that work, joyfully giving thanks to him that he has promised to finish what he has started. (Philippians 1:6)

Pablo ha escuchado que los efesios tienen gran fe, se demuestran gran amor los unos a los otros. Él da gracias por ellos basado en estas maravil-losas cosas que ha escuchado de éstos, sus hermanos en Cristo. No ob-stante, como veremos en los siguientes días, Pablo ora por algunas áreas en específico donde él quiere ver a los efesios crecer. Juzgado a base de los estándares de la gente, pareciera que a los efesios les iba bien en sus vidas. Ellos eran fieles y amorosos con la gente a su alrededor. Eran “Buenos Cristianos”. Pero en realidad, Pablo sabía que ellos tenían aun un largo camino que recorrer. ¿Cuán a menudo vemos a nuestros hermanos y her-manas en la iglesia y pensamos que tienen todo bajo control, que sus vidas están resueltas? Debemos de recordar que cada cristiano necesita crecer individualmente y también dentro de la familia de creyentes; debemos orar los unos por los otros. ¡No lo sabemos todo, y nuestras vidas no están resueltas! Así como Pablo alienta a los creyentes y da gracias a Dios por ellos, vamos a seguir su ejemplo al orar por nuestros hermanos en la fe.

DAY TWO


So what’s at the top of your list of things to pray for others? Is it health? Is it financial prosperity? Is it conflict resolution or relational fulfillment or career success? So much of what I tend to pray about is not eternal. It won’t last. Ultimately, everybody’s health fails. Death is inevitable. And when that happens, all the money in the world is useless. You can’t take it with you. And no human relationship or worldly accomplishment can bring satisfaction. Ecclesiastes 2:11 says, “Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was mean-ingless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.” In light of eternity, so much of what I pray for won’t really matter.

Ephesians 1:17 may be the best thing you can pray for yourself or for some-one else. “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glori-ous Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.” One of my favorite non-Bible quotes comes from the Christian author Larry Crabb. He once said, “God, I know you are all I have but I don’t know you well enough for you to be all I need.” I am prone to seek other things because my view of God is too small. Know-ing God is the best thing. Seeking him should be our first priority and our first prayer for others. Psalm 27:4, “One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.“

As you pray today, let the Word of God drive you to seek after and trea-sure the knowledge of God. Nothing is more valuable. Philippians 3:8 “I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of know-ing Christ Jesus my Lord.” Pray for wisdom and revelation. Pray that your eyes and the eyes of others would be opened to see and know our great God.

DAY THREE


I’ve always had an eye for details. Add to that the fact that I am a bit of a perfectionist and you get someone with a crazy knack for finding every flaw. I can spot a blemish from a mile away. I notice almost every imper-fection. Some of us have a heart that’s bent that way. We focus on what’s wrong. But let’s be honest, sometimes the view from down here is pretty bleak. What we see with our eyes often leads our hearts to despair. What we need is an awakening in our hearts that causes us to see and know the truth, a truth that spurs us on to faith. That’s why Paul prayed as he did in Ephesians 1:18: “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.” God has called me – he chose me, he pursued me. My heart needs to know that. Romans 5:1-2 say it this way: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.” Not only did God call me, he has placed great value on me. I am his prized inheritance. I need to know that what God considers a rich and glorious inheritance is the very ones Jesus died to redeem.

So pray today and ask God to awaken your heart and the hearts of your brothers and sisters in Christ. As surely as we see with our eyes, ask God to open our hearts to know with confidence our great value to him. We are his beloved children, his prized inheritance, purchased by the blood of his Son.

Puede ser que tú creas que Dios te concederá tus “esperanzas,” como si Él fuera el genio de la lámpara. ¡Cúan lejos está esto de la realidad! Aquí hay unos ejemplos de cómo la palabra esperanza se utiliza en la Palabra de Dios:

DAY FOUR


Frequently, I am approached by people needing financial help. It hap-pened just a few weeks ago in the parking lot as I was leaving work. They generally start by describing the dire circumstances that surround them. As they describe their plight, often in great detail, I realize they are asking me if I care. They want to know if I have any compassion for them and the mess they are in? But that’s not all they are looking for. They need to know if I have the ability to help. They want to know if I have the power to rescue them.

On some level, our hearts are always asking those same questions of God. Do you really care? Do you really have the power to rescue me? Ephesians 1 encourages us to pray for hearts that know and are confident of God’s love and power. Verse 19 likens the power with which God works in us to the same power he used to raise Jesus from the dead. In the resurrection of Jesus, God brought life out of death. I need to know that that is his power for me. He can bring life out of the most desperate places. Nothing is so far gone that he cannot redeem it. Nothing is so dead that he cannot breathe life into it. God is able to work in any and every circumstance to fulfill his good purposes. Romans 8:28-29: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called ac-cording to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.” As you pray today, ask God to give you a vision of his power. Ask him to renew your confidence in his ability and his willingness to apply his great power to your great need. Romans 8:31-32: “What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”

Pablo continua en oración para que los efesios puedan crecer en su en-tendimiento de Dios y para que Él les dé sabiduría. Pablo les recordó de dónde debe de venir su esperanza. Ahora, él está orando que ellos recu-erden el perfecto poder de Cristo. El poder de Cristo es incomparable-mente inmenso. No ha habido, ni habrá nada que se asemeje o se pueda enfrentar a su poder.

Pablo les dice a los Efesios que este poder es para nosotros los que creemos. ¿Qué tan sorprendente es que el Dios que tiene un poder incomparable esté de nuestro lado? Pablo de inmediato llama la atención de los efesios hacia la resurrección de Jesus. Él sabe que no hay otro acontecimiento que manifieste con mayor claridad el poder de Cristo. Pablo basa el poder de Cristo en el evangelio.

Como creyentes, tenemos un sorprendente poder que nos resguarda. No importa por lo que estemos pasando, no existe nada que Cristo no pueda solucionar. Podemos descansar en la certeza de que nuestras vidas están sostenidas de una manera segura en las manos de nuestro Poderoso Cre-ador.

1) ¡Alaba a Dios por Su tremendo poder! ¡Dale gracias por estar contigo y no en contra tuya!

Of all the things I could ask for, nothing is more valuable or necessary than knowing God. We’ve been reminded of that in this prayer. We need to know that God loves us deeply. “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1) We need to know that his great love is matched with his incomparably great power. “Now to him who is able to do immeasur-ably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20). Yet there is one more thing that this prayer points us to. It is the sovereign rule of Christ.

Ephesians 1:22-23 says, “And God placed all things under his feet and ap-pointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” When we pray, we absolutely need hearts to be confident of this truth. Everything is under his feet. Nothing is excluded from that. Ultimately he will be victorious. Nothing will overcome him. Nobody, no thing, no power, no circumstance can thwart his purpose and his plans. It may look out of control. It may feel chaotic. But God is still securely on his throne. He sees. He knows. He is working his purposes out in my like and in his church. I need him to remind my heart of that truth.

Pray today for eyes to see and a heart to believe. “The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord is on his heavenly throne. He observes the sons of men; his eyes examine them. The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked and those who love violence his soul hates. On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot. For the Lord is righteous, he loves justice; upright men will see his face” (Psalm 11:4-7).

En esta última parte de la oración de Pablo por los efesios, él hace dos puntos finales. Primero, escribe que Jesucristo es la autoridad máxima reinante. Él gobierna sobre todo lugar y a toda hora. Todo está sometido a Cristo. Segundo, dice que Cristo es la Cabeza de la iglesia, la cual es Su cuerpo.

Cristo tiene autoridad sobre “todas las cosas”, y es la cabeza de la iglesia. En este pasaje podemos ver la íntima relación que Cristo tiene con Su iglesia. Él elige unir creyentes bajo su mando. Nosotros tenemos el gran privilegio de ser Su cuerpo en este mundo. No obstante, no debemos de olvidar que Él es la máxima autoridad en la iglesia. Él siempre ha sido y siempre será nuestro Líder amoroso, quien se sacrificó a Si mismo por amor a nosotros.

En nuestra iglesia, nosotros debemos de someter todo a Él. Él es el único que puede llenar nuestra iglesia con más de Sí mismo. Pablo le recuerda a los efesios, y a nosotros también nos hace un recordatorio hoy, de que existimos como iglesia gracias a la misericordia de Cristo hacia nosotros.

1) Imagina lo enorme que es el universo, y recuerda que Jesús tiene auto-ridad sobre él. Humíllate ante este maravilloso Dios. Alaba a Dios porque tiene el control total.

2) Pide a Dios que te muestre y te ayude a entender Su autoridad y cómo se proyecta sobre tu vida. ¿En qué áreas de tu vida estás tratando de tener tu propia autoridad? Entrega estas áreas al Señor.

3) Ora por Summit en Español, para que como iglesia, nos unamos bajo la autoridad de Cristo. Ora para que humildemente nos sometamos a Su liderazgo.

For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Paul’s prayer begins by recognizing that our very identity comes from God the Father. So often, we forget that we are God’s sons and daugh-ters—children that he loves perfectly, and even rejoices over with singing! We often live instead as the children of wrath that we used to be—or at best, orphans desperately trying to earn God’s approval. The gospel goes to war on the idea that we can earn God’s favor, and reminds us that as his forgiven children, he looks at us and sees Jesus. Every time. Even in the immediate aftermath of your sin, God looks at you with joy and excite-ment—and sees Jesus! Take a moment to thank Jesus for giving you his perfect record. Thank God for adopting you as his child. As you begin to study this prayer in Ephesians this week, ask God to teach you to remem-ber who you have been declared to be in Colossians 3:1-11:

Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Greek or Jew, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

The old you, friend, is dead. Your life has been hidden with Christ in God. As Paul goes on to challenge us in Ephesians 4:1, “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have re-ceived.” This week, ask God to cause you to live out of your new identity as his beloved child!

Si bien es claro que la eficacia de nuestra oración no depende de la posición que adoptemos, el que Pablo mencione que se arrodilla delante del Padre para orar nos dice mucho acerca de la humildad de su caráct-er, la veneración y respeto que siente, la importancia y relevancia de su petición y de cómo Pablo está rendido a nuestro Padre no sólo espiritual sino físicamente.

Pensemos por un momento en lo que esta acción física, que delante del hombre puede parecer humillante, significa para nuestro creador. Lee Filipenses 2:5-10 y Mateo 22:41 y fíjate cómo Pablo y Timoteo nos llaman a tomar una actitud de reverencia:

Vale la pena analizar ante quien nos arrodillamos. Pablo es claro cuando dice: “me arrodillo delante del Padre de quien recibe nombre toda familia en el cielo y en la tierra.”

Para nosotros no hay más que un solo Dios, el Padre, de quien todo procede y para el cual vivimos; y no hay más que un solo Señor, es decir, Jesucristo, por quien todo existe y por medio del cual vivimos. 1 Corintios 8:6 Si mi pueblo, que lleva mi nombre, se humilla y ora, y me busca y abandona su mala conducta, yo lo escuchare desde el cielo, perdonare su pecado y restaurare su tierra. 2 Crónicas 7:14

1) Si puedes, arrodíllate al orar hoy. Si no puedes, toma cualquier posición que te humille en adoración a Dios.

Praise the Lord, we are not asked to be strengthened by our own power—but by the power of the God of the Universe! Paul prays for spiritual power through his Spirit in your inner being. This power is measured by the standard of God’s own glorious riches. God’s Spirit in us strengthens us to do the things we could never do in our own power. Look at the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithful-ness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

To love the unlovely as we love ourselves, to find joy in the midst of un-speakable pain, to know peace in the midst of the unknown, to have pa-tience with a world that doesn’t answer to you, to be kind and display goodness in the midst of hurt and selfishness, to in all things exercise self-control, these are things that you and I are incapable of by our own power. These are works of the Holy Spirit in his children. Paul had an acute understand of just how powerless he was without the power of the Holy Spirit working through him, and admitted in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5:

When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.

Today, ask God to make you entirely dependent on HIS power for EV-ERYTHING. Ask him to cause you to depend entirely on him to make you Christ-like. Ask him to cause you to depend entirely on him to draw your family and friends to himself. Ask him to cause you to,” know noth-ing except Jesus Christ, and him crucified”!

Es fácil decir que conocemos a Dios y que creemos en Jesús; pero permitir que Él viva en lo íntimo de nuestro ser y tome las riendas de nuestra vida no es tan fácil.

A mí me presentaron a Cristo hace veinticinco años, lo saludé y le di la mano, pero nunca llegamos a ser amigos. Era como conocer a un vecino, pero no dejarlo entrar a tu casa, sólo acudiendo a él cuándo necesitas una tacita de azúcar. Asistía a estudios bíblicos, oraba (cuando estaba en prob-lemas), leía la Biblia (cuando estaba confundida)… pero STOP! Para ahí, Dios, yo no te he dicho que tomes mis decisiones, ni que manejes mi vida, ni que me digas qué hacer. Yo alimentaba mi carne pero no mi espíritu, y los frutos se dejaban ver.

No fue hasta hace tres años que permití que Él entrara a mi vida, a mi corazón, a mi mente. Fue el momento en que le abrí la puerta de mi hogar para que Él entrara – ya no existe puerta que nos separe, Él habita en mí y yo vivo por Él.

Teniendo estas dos experiencias en mi vida, entiendo a Pablo cuando pide que las gloriosas riquezas del Espíritu Santo fortalezcan en lo íntimo a los fieles de Éfeso. Sólo cuando nos alimentamos con el Espíritu Santo y experimentamos sus frutos en nuestro ser y en nuestras vidas, podemos disponernos a ser la morada firme de nuestro Salvador.

1) ¿Cristo es tu vecino? o ¿vive en lo “íntimo de tu ser?” Si es vecino, pídele al Señor que te demuestre por qué y que te ayude a someterle cada área de tu vida y corazón a Él.

2) Lee Gálatas 5:22-25. Pídele al Señor que este fruto sea evidencia de Su presencia en tu ser íntimo.

DAY THREE


The activity of the Holy Spirit has an objective: that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. What does it mean for Christ to dwell in your heart? Romans 8:5-17 contrasts a person who lives by his sinful nature with a person whose heart is indwelt by and captivated by Christ.

Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace, the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not be-long to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. Therefore brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, and by him we cry, “Abba, father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs-heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Think about the weight of what you just read for a moment. You were once a slave to your sinful nature—incapable of pleasing God. Now, as a Christian, you have been set free from fear and bondage to sin, and de-clared to be a child of God himself! You are now controlled by the Spirit of God instead of by your sinful nature, and the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in you enables you to love God and to follow his commands.

Thank God for dwelling in you. Thank him for empowering you and di-recting you by the power of the Holy Spirit. Ask him to point out to you the areas of your heart and life in which you are not allowing him to con-trol you. Beg him to cause you to depend on him, and to surrender every area of your life to him.

Ayer oramos que a través del Espíritu Santo pudiésemos vivenciar los fru-tos y el gozo de ser la habitación permanente de nuestro Salvador Jesu-cristo. ¡Esta es la base perfecta para hablar del tamaño del amor de Dios! ¿Acaso este amor incondicional se puede medir?

Personalmente, encontré una forma de medirlo, sólo tengo que mirarme a mí misma como realmente soy, sin consideraciones, ni mentiras: peca-dora, falsa, desleal, me doy gloria a mí misma, me creo autosuficiente, me creo muy buena persona. Que por mis estudios-dinero-carro-barrio en el que vivo no debo relacionarme con “ciertas personas”. Que todo lo que tengo me lo he ganado yo y me lo merezco. Me dejo llevar por dioses falsos como el dinero, las comodidades, las marcas, el que dirán, etc. (¿te identificas con algunos de ellos? o tal vez me faltaron los tuyos)… y AÚN así Dios me ama, me acepta y lo mejor de todo cuando me mira me ve como su bebe limpio y sin pecado. Definitivamente Su amor debe ser inmensamente grande, mejor dicho ¡sin límites!

En esto consiste el amor: no en que nosotros hayamos amado a Dios, sino en que Él nos amó, y envió a su Hijo para que fuera ofrecido como sacrificio por el perdón de nuestros pecados. 1 Juan 4:10

Esta clase de amor es la que Pablo desea que los efesios experimenten. No un amor que nos ganamos o merezcamos, pero uno que nos es dado sin condiciones en la cruz.

1) ¿En qué manera te ha demostrado Dios su amor esta semana? Responde en adoración y agradecimiento.

2) Lee Romanos 8:38-39. ¿Cuales cosas en tu vida intentan separarte del amor de Dios? Entrégaselas a Dios y pídele que te recuerde de su fideli-dad en cada momento.

DAY FOUR


Paul talks about love a lot in this prayer. He references being “rooted and established” in it, so that we might have power to grasp the measure of Christ’s love, and to “know” it. As we read Paul’s prayer, we see that Paul understood that before we can “be filled to the measure of all the full-ness of Christ”, we must understand the love of Christ that “surpasses knowledge”.

Here’s a question: how can you know a love that surpasses knowledge?

The truth is, on this side of heaven we will never fully understand magni-tude of God’s love for us. In his prayer, Paul references the unfathomable width, length, height, and depth of the love of Christ. A love as long as eternity, higher than the heavens and far deeper than the sea. A love that is perfect—that can never be earned, and can never be taken away.

Around The Summit Church, we often say that the gospel is not simply the diving board into the pool of Christianity—it is the pool itself. The idea that you have been perfectly loved by a Holy God is not simply the way you begin to walk with him, but the way that you continue to know him throughout the course of your Christian journey. It is the glorious knowledge that you are loved and safe that enables you to stop striving to earn God’s approval and affection, and to start living in the power of the knowledge that you are his dearly loved child, and he is delighted with you. If you are a Believer, God looks at you and sees the perfect record of Jesus. He wants you. He is excited about you!

It is only after you learn to rest in the love of God that has been freely given to you and to stop striving to earn it, that you can begin to learn to love others with that same love. John 13:34-35 says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Love is experiencing and displaying the glory of God. As you pray today, thank God for the relentless way that he has pursued you. Praise him for his perfect, unfathomable love! Ask God to cause you to begin to under-stand and believe his perfect love for you. Ask him to cause you to love him more than any of the gifts that he has given you. Finally, ask him to cause you to display that love to a world that does not understand it.

Y a aquel que es poderoso para hacer todo mucho más abundantemente de lo que pedimos o entendemos, según el poder que obra en nosotros, Efesios 3:20

Alguna vez has dado un regalo y la persona que lo recibe se admira por lo grande o costoso, y después exclama, “¡Yo nunca hubiese esperado algo así de ti!” Un momento, eso fue un halago, o un insulto?

Bueno, pensemos en nosotros como hijos del que creó la tierra donde estamos parados, el aire que nos sostiene con vida, el sol y la luna… nos creó a ti y a mí. ¿Será que hay algo imposible para Él? ¡Cómo se siente nuestro Padre cuando hacemos peticiones con miedo o con duda? Por ejemplo: Señor quiero servirte y hacer discípulos, pero no soy buena en eso y no creo que me puedes ayudar. Más bien, ¡¡¡serviré asistiendo todos los domingos a la iglesia!!! Un momento, ¿eso fue un halago o un insulto?

Pablo nos dice que lo que Dios puede hacer está fuera del alcance de nues-tra imaginación, ni siquiera nuestras palabras o ideas alcanzan a percibir su poder. Empecemos a pedir de acuerdo al tamaño, al poder y a la capa-cidad del Dador.

Ésta es la confianza que tenemos al acercarnos a Dios: que si pedimos conforme a su voluntad, él nos oye. 1 Juan 5:14

Es hora de que como Pablo pidamos sin duda, confiados en que Dios SIEMPRE, y de acuerdo a su voluntad, escucha y contesta nuestra oración. Pablo nos dice que Jesús tiene el poder para obrar en nosotros, y que contestar una simple y humilde oración para Él no significa ningún reto. Él es capaz de todo.

1) ¿Cuándo has dudado del poder de Dios? Confiésaselo y entrégaselo, confiando en Él.

2) ¿Cuál es tu pesar hoy? Dios puede hacer más de lo que nos imaginamos. Entrégaselo al Señor hoy y comprométete a esperar en El.

DAY FIVE


When I contemplate the magnitude of God’s love, it becomes apparent to me very quickly that I believe far too little of him. I ask for far too little from him. I tend to interact with God as though I care more about the brokenness in the world than he does—and NOT as though he’s the same God that declared in Mathew 28:8 that ALL authority in heaven and on earth had been given to him. The same God that declared in Psalm 2:8 that we simply needed to ASK, and he’d give the nations to us.

The best way to determine God’s willingness to work for you in the future is to look at what he has done in the past. As humans, we have a natural tendency to “think small” and want to play it safe—but safety is not what God calls us to! The most astonishing moves of God are in response to absolutely audacious requests from ordinary people that believe that God is more committed to his name than we are. That he is more loving, more willing to save, more committed to pursuing his children than we will ever be. Just look at Joshua 10! It’s a story that many of you know well—Joshua, understanding that he had precious little daylight left and much more battle to fight, believed three things. He believed that the battle belonged to the Lord, that the Lord cared more about the battle than he did, and that the Lord was powerful enough to do ANYTHING. Understanding those three things, Joshua had the audacity to ask God to make the sun stand still to give his army more daylight to work with…and God did it!

As you pray today, think about the power of God that is at work within you. Thank him for the ways that he has moved in the past. Praise him for his unfailing love, his goodness, his relentless pursuit of his people, and his unfathomable power! Ask him to cause you to believe that he is as powerful, loving, and as willing to save as he says he is in the Bible. Ask him to build audacious faith in you.

No quiero terminar sin tener en cuenta cómo Pablo se dirige al creyente como individuo y como cuerpo de la iglesia. No podemos orar por uno sin orar por el otro. Creo que por eso Pablo insiste en fortalecer el espíritu de cada uno de nosotros para que nuestro cuerpo pueda crecer.

Si en una familia sólo uno de los miembros tiene el alimento diario, ¿cómo funciona esa familia? Así mismo no puede una iglesia funcionar como el cuerpo de Cristo si sus fieles no se alimentan de las riquezas del Espíritu.Para concluir vemos a lo largo de la oración cómo sólo dependemos de Uno, del Padre, y de la muestra de amor más grande que nadie jamás ha podido hacer: entregar a Su Hijo para que nosotros seamos salvos. Así, con Cristo habitando en nuestros corazones, nuestra fe sea cimentada en tierra firme de forma que podamos ser uno solo en Jesucristo.

Si entendimos el gran regalo que recibimos, ¿a quién más podemos darle gloria sino a Él? No nos olvidemos que el fin, o la meta, es terminar reconociendo que ¡Dios es digno de ser alabado por los siglos de los siglos!

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life wor-thy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:9-14

Paul’s chief prayer request for the church in Colossae was that they would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will. This is, after all, one of our core motivations for praying. We want to live our life well, and getting some knowledge from above on what God’s will is would be so helpful. Conversely, we can get frustrated when we have a tough decision or hard situation and can’t seem to get an answer from God.

So let’s take a deeper look into what we know about “God’s will.” Ephe-sians is a good place to start, since Ephesians and Colossians are so closely related in themes and topics – they are like cousins. Ephesians 1:3-14 has a good deal to say about God’s will, so take a minute and read it as you pray. Verses 5,9, and 11 all reference God’s will. This passage explains that God’s will is to save us through the work of Jesus Christ. In fact, we learn that this has been God’s plan from the beginning of time!

Paul wanted the Colossian Christians to be full of understanding what God has done for us in the gospel. This leads to all spiritual wisdom. Once you get a deep understanding of the gospel, it brings proper perspective to your daily challenges, desires, requests, and the other things for which you are seeking God’s will.

Praying with fullness from the gospel will help you relate to God in terms of what HE is doing in the world. It saves you from being motivated by what you think should happen. Colossians 1:3-8, the first part of this prayer, is about how the gospel is bearing fruit around the world, and about how thankful Paul is that the Colossians have become believers. As you pray today, ask God for his will in your life. Ask God what part you can play in seeing others come to an understanding of God’s will for their lives.

Al saber esto, Pablo empezó a orar por los hermanos en Colosas. Pablo em-pezó a orar por los hermanos porque, estando prisionero, no tenía manera de poderlos ayudar o motivar. Pero, gracias a que las oraciones de los fieles tienen poder, es que Pablo se abocó a pedirle a Dios por sus hermanos que estaban en Colosas. De igual manera debemos nosotros de pedir por nuestros hermanos de la iglesia Summit, con un corazón abierto para que Dios vea nuestro amor por los hermanos y así poder llegar a sus cora-zones para fortalecerlos en sus debilidades. Nosotros no podemos llegar al corazón de los que amamos, gracias a Dios que El sí puede.

También es lindo pedirle a Dios el llegar a conocer plenamente su vol-untad con toda sabiduría y comprensión espiritual. La voluntad de Dios es una joya espiritual que necesitamos conocer, porque queremos formar parte de ese reino celestial, donde únicamente la voluntad de Dios es la que impera.

1) Procuremos en este día pedirle a Dios que nos permita conocerlo de esa manera tan especial, conocerlo de tal manera que al hacer nosotros su voluntad nos cause placer a nosotros y complacencia para Él.

2) Hagamos como Pablo y Timoteo, pidámosle a Dios por nuestro hermano/a para que él o ella también llegue a tener el mismo conocimien-to de su voluntad.

3) ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que oraste sin cesar por alguien? Piensa en alguien que necesita tus oraciones, y comprométete a orar por ellos.

DAY TWO


The prayer in Colossians 1 moves from understanding the gospel to how the gospel changes our life now. For Paul, the result of understanding how much God has done for you will naturally lead to obedience. If we under-stand just how much he loves us, we will want to please him with every-thing that we are and do.

Our purpose in following God’s commands has to be love for him and appreciation for what he has done. If we obey God to try to earn status, earn our salvation, or out of fear, then our work for him will not bear the kind of fruit that Paul talks about in this verse.

Titus 2 is a fascinating chapter on this topic. The chapter starts with the command to “teach what accords with sound doctrine.” To our modern, academically-attuned minds, we expect the next few verses to explain the-ology with precision and depth. But that’s not what the author meant by “what accords with sound doctrine.” The rest of the chapter talks about behavior, demeanor, and action. The gospel leads us to good works, as you’ll see at the end of the chapter:

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. Titus 2:11-14

Start your prayer today by thanking God for his good works done on your behalf. Praise him for creating the universe, for designing you, for saving the world through Jesus Christ, for coming to live with us in our pain and misery, for dying on a cross and rising again to bring us into relation-ship with him, and for imparting his Spirit to us. Ask for the passion to renounce what he doesn’t approve of and to take up activities that please him. Tell him that you want to follow in his footsteps and bring glory to him by imitating him in everything you do.

En este día nos damos cuenta que el propósito de conocer la voluntad de Dios es vivir en una manera digna que agrade al Señor. El hacer su volun-tad, nos demuestra ser verdaderos hijos de Dios. En esto se materializa o se consume el milagro de la salvación en cuanto a la santificación. En qué sentido se han de preguntar. Pues en el sentido en que al conocer plenamente su voluntad viene el gozo de ejercitarla, es decir, vivirla. Vivir de manera digna de Dios, agradándolo en todo. Esta sabiduría y comp-rensión lleva a vidas transformadas. Por ejemplo, el conocer el amor de Dios me revela cuán poco lo merezco. Con solo conocer esa característica propia de Dios, me convierte a mí en un ser arrepentido y agradecido a la vez. Arrepentido porque el pecado ya no causa gozo y agradecido porque la nueva vida es mucho más placentera que la vida vieja.

1) Ora que este día sea un día de acciones que le den gozo a Dios y tam-bién a nosotros al ver que nuestras acciones ya no son lo que solían ser sino acciones transformadas por el poder del espíritu de Cristo que mora en nosotros.

2) Pídele que te de la oportunidad de ver en tus obras, la obra del Espíritu Santo en ti.

DAY THREE


Verse 11 in our Colossians 1 passage introduces the theme of power. Here we find three different words for the same concept in the span of half a verse. Paul prays that the Colossians would be “strengthened” by the “power” of God’s “might” as we live in obedience to our Lord. Once again, these are phrases and words used frequently in Ephesians, so we will look there for further insight.

We mentioned in week three of the prayer guide that the “power” de-scribed in Ephesians 1:18-20 is nothing short of the power God used to raise Jesus from the dead! THAT is the power that is at work in us as be-lievers. Ephesians 6:10-18 gives the command to be strong in the strength of this same resurrection power that God is using to sustain us. Ephesians 6 also describes what we need power for and who we are standing against. It is a spiritual battle that requires us to pray at all times in the spirit (Ephesians 6:18). The result will be patience and endurance as we stand against the schemes of the devil.

It is a good thing that we have God’s power on our behalf, because our task in this world is to bear fruit. Such is a task that only God can bring to fulfillment. You’ll recall stories in the gospel that talk about believers bearing fruit and harvesting, all of which acknowledge that God is the one that makes seed grow and bear fruit, even as we work in the process.

As you pray today, acknowledge your dependence on God’s Spirit to do the meaningful work that God has called you to do. Pray for his power to bear fruit, and pray for it believing beyond a shadow of a doubt that you will get it.

Pablo también nos da otra verdad importante: todo crecimiento espiritual viene por medio de un conocimiento más pro-fundo de la Persona y obra de Jesucristo. ¿Quieres crecer? Pasa más tiem-po con Dios en su Palabra y en oración y lo conocerás mejor. El último elemento mencionado fluye del problema común nuestro: no podemos cambiarnos a nosotros mismos. Si realmente quieres ser transformado(a) tendrá que ser por el poder de Dios que nos da la fuerza para vivir como Él quiere.

1) Ora que Dios nos saque de nuestra tendencia de siempre mirar hacía adentro. Que Summit en Español sea conocida como un grupo que sirve y ayude a nuestra comunidad.

2) Ora que Dios te dé un deseo fuerte – más fuerte que cualquier otra cosa – de conocerlo mejor, de regocijarte en Su presencia y de llegar a ser como Él.

3) Ora que los miembros de Summit en Español conozcan por experien-cia personal el poder de Dios que al fluir por sus vidas nos transforme en todas las áreas de la vida.

DAY FOUR


The end of verse 11 and the beginning of verse 12 add an important ele-ment to the process of bearing fruit and working for the Lord. This is a process that results in joy and thanksgiving! The hard work of following Christ and obeying God is not done as drudgery or duty. Christian work and the Christian life result in joy!

How does that work? Think about it: first, your main goal in life is to be in relationship with God. God is AWESOME! God loves you uncondi-tionally and showers all kinds of undeserved blessings on you. What’s not to be joyful about that? Your main motivation in living for him is the joy that you have in him. Since you love him and he loves you, this will com-pel you to work with him on his mission in the world. Your main mission in this world as a follower of Christ is to allow others to experience this same joy in God that you have!

Philippians is a letter fixated on the idea of Christian joy. The words “joy,” “joyful,” and “rejoice” are repeated about four times in every chapter. But as you read through the book of Philippians, you’ll notice that this joy does not come as a result of God fixing all the circumstances of their life, church, and ministry. The Philippian church was dealing with some hard circumstances: their founding pastor was in jail, their short-term mis-sionary almost died when they sent him out, they are being persecuted by people outside the church, they are experiencing division within the church, and they will soon come to find out that Paul is near death when he’s writing this letter. But it’s Paul, the guy in chains and on death’s door, who repeatedly gives the command to “Rejoice!”

Christian joy transcends the circumstances of your life. If you tie your happiness to God rather than to the ebb and flow of your life, your de-meanor and your baseline emotional state will reflect the joy that Paul knew in the latter years of his life. Where does that joy come from? “The surpassing worth of knowing Jesus Christ, my Lord (Philippians 3:8).”

As you pray today, take time to dwell on and increase the joy that you derive from your relationship with God. Spend minutes upon minutes meditating on the parts of the gospel and God’s character that make your heart leap inside of your chest. If you do not know what those are, read Philippians, Colossians, and the Gospel of John until you can underline and memorize things about God that elicit joy. The Bible is full of such examples, because the Bible writers knew the joy that came from know-ing God. Pray, finally, for those whom you would like to see experience this same joy as well.

En toda situación, pero sobre todo en las duras y difíciles, necesitamos tener en nuestro corazón las tres verdades que aprendimos ayer: el cono-cimiento de la bondad de Dios; la confirmación de nuestra adopción vi-endo el fruto de nuestras obras; y la esperanza de las promesas de Dios. Sabiendo que Él es bueno, sabiendo que somos su hijo y sabiendo que El no quebranta sus promesas, es una fuerza que nos lleva a perseverar hasta el fin del mundo.

Esto nos lleva a dar gracias con alegría. Una vez, cuando apenas em-pezaba a conocer a Dios, le hice una pregunta (ya no recuerdo la pregunta pero sí la experiencia). Como tres días después escuche en mi corazón el resurgimiento de la pregunta y afirmé que sí, la había hecho. Casi inme-diatamente después, El me dio la respuesta. Continué caminando entre el mar de gente, pero con una alegría y un gozo, que me imagino parecía estar loco. Sí, pero loco de alegría, dándole gracias con alegría y vigor por haber recibido la respuesta a una simple pregunta que le hice al Altísimo.

1) Cuales situaciones ha usado Dios en tu vida para recordarte de su bon-dad y para fortalecerte en dificultades? Dale gracias a Dios por cuidarte de esa manera tan especial y por prepararte para los tiempos difíciles.

DAY FIVE


Our time in prayer this week began with the gospel and it will end with the gospel. Verses 12-14 center on the message that Jesus redeemed us from darkness and brought us into the family of light. Our sins have been forgiven, and now we share in the inheritance of the beloved son. Here’s what comes with that inheritance: 1) everything that the “Beloved Son” has earned is now given to us, and 2) eternal life with God.

For a detailed description of the one whose inheritance we share, look at the verses that follow this prayer. Colossians 1:15-23 are overflowing with their description of Christ’s richness. All of the spiritual and physi-cal “thrones” and “dominions” on earth are his. The whole church is his, and all creation is held together by him. You, as a believer, are his, and his spiritual inheritance of a holy and blameless record are yours. And when he finishes the work of reconciling heaven and earth, you will live eternal life with him in paradise.

Knowing that this inheritance is your future can really enhance your prayer life. Colossians 3:1-2 explain how: “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, no on things that are on earth.” As you put your mind on your future, let Christ show you how you should live today in a way that leads you closer in your fel-lowship with him.

Él los ha facultado para participar de la herencia de los santos en el reino de la luz. Él nos libró del dominio de la oscuridad y nos trasladó al reino de su amado Hijo, en quien tenemos redención, el perdón de pecados. Colosenses 1:12-14

¿Quién es Él? Dios, ¿Cómo fue que nos facultó? A través nuestra reden-ción por medio de Jesucristo, su Hijo, y ahora somos coherederos con Él. Hoy es un día de gozo y alabanza al que nos lo dio todo y no escatimó nada por nosotros. ¿Cómo no hemos de exaltarlo a lo máximo? Que ese sea nuestro clamor, un clamor que proviene de un corazón lleno de gozo y de agradecimiento. Pablo nos recuerda que al igual a como Dios rescató a su pueblo de la esclavitud en Egipto, hoy en día Jesús nos está liberando del dominio de las tinieblas o sea del reino de Satanás y del poder del mal… y nos traslada al reino de su amado hijo; o sea al reino de los cielos, al reino de Dios, al reino donde se hace la voluntad de Dios.

Por tanto, el día de hoy caminemos con la frente en alto por haber sido rescatado de un lugar perdido y por haber sido transportados a un lugar de luz y amor. Un reino en el cual podemos ver con claridad el poder excelso de Dios en acción en aquellos que creen, no para apañarlo egoístamente, sino para predicarlo y exponerlo para así rescatar a otros que están en el mismo lugar donde estuvimos nosotros antes de conocer la voluntad de Dios.

1) Dale gracias y exalta al Dios Altísimo por tan grande amor hacia nosotros, por habernos redimido, por habernos dado vida, por habernos rescatado y sobre todo por habernos hecho partícipes de su reino.

2) Pídele a Dios en este día la oportunidad de poder presentarle a alguien el evangelio de salvación, para que otros sin esperanza puedan ver la luz que los llama y los invita a compartir el gozo de Cristo.

WEEK ONE

Part 1: Prayer (Break up into groups of 3)

This week’s prayer guide focused on the fact that Jesus is our Great Shep-herd. Start this week’s small group by spending about ten minutes thank-ing our Lord for all the ways that he cares for us and guards our souls. Use these points as a guide:

a) Thank God for how he has worked in you to grow you spiritually. Be specific. For instance, when you decided to follow Jesus, he gave you a new heart with new desires. A Spirit-filled Christian will now desire Christ more and sin less as the Christian matures. Where have you seen the evi-dences of this new heart that God has given you? Praise him for those!

b) Praise God for his finished work on the cross to save us from sin and death. Before Jesus rescued you, you were not a sick person in need of help – the Bible says that you were DEAD in your sins, and needed to be brought to life. Praise God that while we were dead in our sins, Jesus died in our place so that we could be brought back to life! Not only that, but we get to live with him for all of eternity. Thank him for this unmerited gift. Ask him to cause you to live a life that does not make sense outside of the gospel – one characterized by the radical love and generosity defined by the life of Jesus.

Part 2: Discussion (Come back together as a group)

Read Hebrews 13:1-25. Use the following questions to have a discussion on what you’ve learned throughout the week.

a) What has God been teaching you from Hebrew 13:20-21 as you’ve been praying through these verses this week?

b) What, from the rest of the chapter, can you learn from the way the writer of Hebrews was instructing these Christians on how to pray?

c) Verse 21 says that God is “working in us that which is pleasing in his sight.” How does this affect the way you pray?

d) What has God been teaching you about his concern for your ministry this week?

Part 3: Prayer (Break up into groups of 3 again)

Hebrews 13:20-21 talks about how Christ is equipping each of us to do his will. Spend a few minutes talking about what God is leading you to do for him in the next year (individually and as a group). Then, spend some time committing those plans to God and asking him to bless them. Pray through the following points:

a) Thank God for blessing you with skills and opportunities to work for his kingdom. Acknowledge that your skills and opportunities are all gifts from him, and ask him to show you how to use them for his glory.

b) Ask God to confirm and bless your plans and the plans of one other person in your group.

c) Ask God for wisdom on how your group should serve the community in the coming year.

d) Praise God for specific things that he has done in your small group in the last year. Take a few minutes to list those out together before begin-ning to pray. Ask him to cause you to notice where he is working in your life and the life of your group, and then thank him regularly for it!

Read Matthew 6:5-18. Use the following questions to have a discussion on what you’ve learned throughout the week.

a) What has God been teaching you from the verses (9-13) that you prayed through this week?

b) What, from the rest of the chapter, did you learn about prayer that you think will enhance your time of communing with God?

c) Verses 16-18 talk about fasting. What experiences have you had with fasting? How does fasting enhance your prayer life? What other things have you built into your life to remind you of God’s faithfulness to you?

d) What has God been teaching you about relating to him this week?

Part 2: Preparation (The leader will lead the whole group in preparation for prayer)

This week’s prayer guide walks us through the Lord’s Prayer. Use the first few minutes to jot down some prayer points from each section of Jesus’ prayer. As the leader walks through each topic below, each member should write down two or three prayer points. These can be verses that come to mind or phrases and thoughts that articulate the point in your own words You will use these in smaller group prayer time in a few minutes.

a) PRAISE - Verse 9. Ascribe to God the glory that he deserves from us. Be specific! Praise him for his unfailing love, his faithfulness, his relentless

pursuit of his people, his just nature, the way he is bringing the nations to himself… the list is endless!

b) PETITION - Verse 10-11. Ask God to fix the parts of our world that are broken or don’t match up with God’s will. Then ask for what you need to get through the next few days or weeks living in this broken world.

c) CONFESSION – Verse 12. Be specific (but not graphic) about your sins. It is only as you get more transparent in your prayer life that you will truly be open to God changing you. Unless you are ready to risk some-thing, you are not fully ready to receive grace in that area. Ask for forgive-ness and also forgive those who have caused you wrong. Ask for God’s help in loving him more than you love sin.

d) PROTECTION – Verse 13. Focus on the spiritual for a minute. Other than sin, what spiritual battles are you facing right now? Are there people in your life that are resisting the Gospel? Are you experiencing anything that is affecting your own faith in God?

Part 3: Prayer (Break up into groups of three)

Have each person in the group share and pray through each of the four points above. You will want to reserve significant time to spend on “Con-fession.”

Pide a Dios que restaure las partes del mundo que están rotas o que no concuerden con la voluntad de Dios. Luego pídele lo que necesitas para vivir en este mundo roto durante los próximos días o semanas. c) Confesión – Versículo 12. Sé específico(a) (pero no gráfico(a)) en cuanto a tus pecados. Es únicamente cuando eres más transparente en tu vida de oración que estarás realmente abierto(a) a que Dios te cambie. A menos que estés dispuesto(a) a arriesgar algo, no estás completamente listo(a) para recibir gracia en esta área. Pídele perdón, y también perdona a los que te han ofendido. Pídele a Dios que te ayude a amarlo más a Él que al pecado. d) Protección – Versículo 13. Enfócate por un momento en lo espiritual. ¿Cuáles luchas espirituales, que no sean pecados, estás enfrentando aho-ra? ¿Hay personas en tu vida que están resistiendo el evangelio? ¿Estás pasando por algo que está afectando tu propia fe en Dios?

Part 1: Prayer (Keep the entire group together for this part)

After you bring everyone together and begin your time in group, read Ephesians 1:3-14. Spend the first 7-10 minutes of your time together prais-ing God the way Paul did in these verse. Use these points as a guide:

a) Thank God for blessings that he has poured on you (spend most time on spiritual blessings).

b) Praise God for his brilliant plan for salvation, and for executing his will with perfection.

c) Thank God for the work of Jesus Christ on our behalf (be specific).

d) Thank God for the Spirit imparted to us as a seal for our salvation.

Part 2: Discussion (Stay together as a large group)

Read Ephesians 1:3-23. Use the following questions to have a discussion on what you’ve learned throughout the week.

a) What has God been teaching you from the verses (15-23) that you’ve been praying through this week?

b) What, from the rest of the chapter, gives you greater knowledge of God and how he is working on your behalf?

c) What has God been teaching you about his power at work in your life in the last year?

Ephesians 1:15-23 talks about the power that is at work in us as believers. We will use the main prayer session this evening to share with each other about where we need God’s power in our lives. Use the following ques-tions to prompt the sharing time:

1) What is your biggest need right now?

2) What is your greatest unknown in the coming months?

3) What causes you the greatest anxiety?

4) Where do you feel “out of control?”

5) Who are you most concerned about?

6) What relationship needs divine intervention?

7) Where do you need wisdom that you don’t have?

WEEK FOUR

Part 1: Prayer (Gather the whole group)

This week’s prayer guide contains verses that have become very meaning-ful for The Summit Church, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).” Start this week’s small group by spending 10-15 minutes thanking our Lord for all the ways that he has done more in our lives than we have expected. Use these points as a guide:

a) Thank God for how he has worked in your life as an individual and in your family throughout the years.

b) Thank God for what he has done through the churches that you’ve been a member of, including Summit.

Part 2: Discussion (Stay together as a large group)

Read Ephesians 3:7-21. Use the following questions to have a discussion on what you’ve learned throughout the week.


b) What does it mean to pray Gospel-centered prayers? Ground your answer in the verses from our passage for the week.

c) Verse 18 talks about the “strength to comprehend” the love of Christ. Discuss why the Gospel requires “strength” to comprehend it.

d) What has God been teaching you about his love for you in the past month?

Pray through the following topics: a) Pray for the lost. 1. Share: take a few minutes to share about those in your life that don’t yet know the surpassing love of Christ, but need to.

2. Pray: that God would open the eyes of their heart to the Gospel. Pray that God would keep your heart from ever becoming numb or “used” to the Gospel. b) Pray for your needs.

1. Share: updates with each other from last week’s personal requests.

2. Pray: again for God to work his power in you to see his will accomplished in those situations. c) Pray for the Church.

Pray for the vision and mission of The Summit Church. Pray that God would continually bless the church as it seeks to make Jesus’ name great in the Triangle and throughout the whole world. Pray that the name of Jesus – not the name of The Summit Church – would be made famous! d) Praise!

Praise God for how he has already worked in your church and small group. Be specific.

Part 1: Prayer (Assemble together as one group) After you bring everyone together and begin your time in group, read Colossians 1:15-23. Spend the first half hour of small group praising Jesus. Use these points as a guide:

a) Praise Jesus for his power and his character. Use the passage to get specific.

b) Praise Jesus for working out our salvation and bringing us into relation-ship with God, the Father.

c) Confess to him the ways that you have rebelled against his will. Ac-knowledge to him that you know his ways are better.

d) Praise Jesus for his power and ask him to empower you to serve him.

e) Thank him again for reconciling you to God.

Part 2: Discussion (Stay together as one group)

Read Colossians 1:3-23. Use the following questions to have a discussion on what you’ve learned throughout the week.
