Link Learning Initiatives to Strategic Issuesv Identify the business goals that learning and development
programs can impact
v Align learning and development initiatives to business goals
v Reach agreement with the business sponsor on the expected impact (contribution) of learning and development to the expected outcomes – needn’t be precisely measured.
v Create a learning plan that aligns with expected contribution (effort and $)
v Report progress on the plan, and correlate with progress on the strategic initiative.

Essential Guidance: Implement the Framework
• Set up time with strategic program stakeholder and reach agreement on purpose and impact of training
• Identify learning programs without strategic sponsor –and reallocate funds/effort/attention toward higher value programs
• Double down marketing efforts on successful (well aligned) programs/courses
• Identify barriers to consumption
• Recruit key stakeholders to sponsor ongoing programs
• Leverage “companion” training from internal stakeholders/SMEs to complement content from external sources

Improved onboarding: “Udemy has allowed us to better structure our onboarding process, because our onboarding process is about skilling up in technology. And I’d say it probably allowed us to improve that by anywhere between 30% and 50%, for about 75% of the people onboarded. We sit new employees down and say, ‘Soak up Udemy content.’ The idea is, they save anywhere between 5 and 10 days…. They can click through to Udemy from within the portal.”
Upskill in needed areas: “We are using Udemy to upskill employees in areas of high need, and Udemy is right there at the point of need. . . We think people are using it as a way of making themselves more efficient in their current jobs.”

Higher developer productivity: “Our developers are more productive because of Udemy… There was a case recently where we had a developer that needed to become better versed in AWS technology to do whatever he needed to do on a certain project. He found a couple of relevant courses on Udemy, and was able to use those to figure out what he needed to do a lot quicker than whatever he would have done otherwise.”
Help staff ramp up to take on new roles: “Part of what we do with Udemy is incentivize learning and training by saying the more you learn, and the more skills you have, the more we can give you a greater variety of consulting jobs that come up. So, Udemy plays a big part in the ability for staff to get a greater variety in their day-to-day jobs, which means they've got to get those skills. And Udemy allows them to do that in the shortest time possible.”
