It’s always humbling tomeet with America’s heroes– those who serve in the USmilitary and fire service. It’s an honor and privilegeto be in an industry where we can assist those whogive so selflessly. Kurt Vonnegut, writer andhumanist, realized their contributions to societywhen he wrote, “I can think of no more stirringsymbol of man's humanity to man than a fireengine.”

In this age of entitlement, the work ethic anddesire to help others exhibited by these heroes is so refreshing. It’s in strong contrast to the“Occupy Movement” demonstrators. One groupsays, “What can I do for America?” and the othersays, “What can America do for me?” I’m not sure, but I think these demonstrators are upset that companies make a profit.

On the very first day of business school, youlearn that the primary purpose of any business isto generate a profit. Is this wrong?

I distinctly remember a management meetingabout 15 years ago, when we all filled out surveyswhich included a question, “What is the purposeof our business?” All managers, except for one, answered that our primary purpose was to make a profit. Bill Darley disagreed, stating, “We areabout serving our customers, creating good jobsand giving back. If we do that, the profits willcome.” The room was silent.

Martin Luther King Jr. stated, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are youdoing for others?” It’s a profound question, butone that is easily answered by those we serve, andby Bill Darley.

Today, our company has a formal CorporateSocial Responsibility (CSR) Plan. In short, we try to be good corporate citizens. Part of the planincludes supporting over 250 charities each yearwith most of our giving directed to the communitieswe serve and live in. While we don’t support thesecauses for any personal gain, it’s interesting to seethe good that comes back to us.

As we look to new markets such as water purification and homeland security equipment forhomeowners, we always consider the alignmentwith our CSR plan. Will we be serving humanity? But we also ask, can we do it profitably?

It’s kind of the chicken or the egg dilemma. BillDarley was right -- if we don’t continue to takecare of you, our customers, we won’t make a profit. If a company is not profitable, it can’t continue to serve its customers, create jobs and make contributions to society. Either way, we’re going tocontinue to be focused on you, our customers. If itever seems like we’re not, I hope you’ll let me know.

DARLEY INTRODUCES NEW BREAKTHROUGHS FOR 2012

The new PSD “Silent Pak” pump allows for a 1500 gpm NFPA rated pump without a pump transmission! After working closely with Chelsea and Allison for months, on December 1, 2011, Darleyreceived approval for a 1500 gpm rating from Chelsea when using their Model 870XAFJP-B5XV seriesPTO with a 200% ratio and an Allison EVS 3000 Series transmission. The engine speed needed is only2049 rpm, so it can be matched with most engines on the market capable of producing at least 225net horsepower. The Allison transmission must be ordered with the 1:00 PTO provision, but the pumpcan run off the 8:00 or 1:00 position.

This new pump PSD “Silent Pak” is:Quiet – No transmission to generate pump noiseCompact – Pump weighs only 225 poundsEconomical – Priced at a fraction of the cost of conventional splitshaft midship pumps

ZS 3000 - Highest Flow EverDarley’s new ZS pump is the highest flow pump available on the market

with flows in excess of 3400 gpm in a compact package. The ZS pump is available with a two-gear or three-gear configuration and

High rise sky-scrapers present

particularly difficult fire fighting challenges. Recent tests conducted by Darley in conjunction with theShanghai Fire Department have shownremarkable solutions to some of thosechallenges. In construction projects, for instance, sprinkler systems may notbe fully operational.

We were allowed to conduct tests in a structure withan approximate height of 250 meters (70 stories) toverify the response capability in extreme conditions. In comparison, an NFPA 1901 pump can push water uparound 30 stories with an effective stream at the end. These tests were performed with specialized equipment

and custom built apparatus.

Our testing showed that high-pressure water and CAFS couldbe successfully deployed and discharged at that height, andour special wye draining systemworked well. Draining the hoselines raises serious safety concernsthat were addressed successfully.

The Helicopter Pumper is an interesting alternative. Our partners at Kanrus are delivering

helicopters equipped tocarry 700 gallons ofwater and, equippedwith our HE64R seriespumping unit, are ableto achieve impressiveknock-down capabilitiesin tall structures. They’reon YouTube if you wantto take a look.

The latest development in highrise fire fighting is Drone Aircraft.

The Darley Stinger is a compact, remotely controlled helicopter,

about 1 meter in diameterwhen deployed, which canrelay fire ground information

back to the command post in real time. With its sophisticatedinstrumentation andcapabilities, it can flyto any story of a highrise building, and with infrared cameras,

determine which floors are in danger. The Darley Stinger not only can beequipped with HD live video, but alsothermal imaging, radiation and hazmatdetection, and a host of other features.

The world is getting taller. Cities aregetting taller. The physics of firefightingwon’t change. Our demand to respond to events in taller buildings will onlyincrease in coming years. As we learned inShanghai, preparation is the key.

JUST ASK ENGINEERINGQuestion?

Michael C. RuthyVP [email protected]

What new developments are underwayfor high rise firefighting?Asked by: Bo Zhang, Darley China

W.S. Darley & Co. has been serving the US Department of Defense for over 80 years.During World War II, Darley provided thousands of pumps and hundreds of fire apparatusto the US Army and US Navy. At the end of the war, these pumps and trucks were leftthroughout the world and became a springboard for Darley’s international business, which today can account for as much as 50% of our core fire business in a given year.

In the past 30 years, Darley pumps have been used on most major military contractsfor fire apparatus including the P18, P22, P23, P25, P26 as well as the TFFT and HWATT programs.

In 1994, Darley was awarded the P100 contract with the US Navy. Since that time, Darleyhas delivered more than 5000 pumps to the US Navy, US Coast Guard and more than 35other navies around the world. According to a US Navy spokesperson, “The Darley P100 replacedthe Hale P250 pump and as a result of that change, we were able to shut down our maintenance and repair

facilities that were needed to support the P250.” In 2011, the Navy renewed the P100 contract for five years.

In 2001, the US Coast Guard (USCG) awarded Darley the P6 contract for dewateringpumps. These are used on virtually every USCG Vessel for saving ships in disastrous situations. In 2002, Darley was awarded the coveted “SOS” Award after the P6

was used to save a ship off the coast of Alaska bypumping water from the P6. All members of the sinking vessel survived long enough to be rescued.

In 2011, the USCG awarded Darley the P1 contractfor similar pumps that are deployed from helicopters.

Darley’s Ohler Division recently delivered over 2,000P125 pumps to the USMC and US Army for fuel andpotable water transfer.

Darley continues to look at developing products for the US Department of Defense as a key initiative.

The CAFS quality was enhanced inhigh rise testing.

Answer.

Helicopter firefighting isn’t just forWildland applications anymore.

The Darley Stinger is ideal for all first response applications.

The Darley P1 and P6 pumps have been used by the USCoast Guard and other foreign CoastGuards for the past ten years. At leastone is on every vessel.

Shane Sullivan began his career at Darley as anengineering intern in May 2007. One year later, he joined us as a full-time Design Engineer aftergraduating from UW Stout with a Bachelor’sdegree in Engineering Technology MechanicalDesign.

Shane continued his education while workingat Darley and earned a Master’s Degree inManufacturing Engineering in 2010.

According to Shane, “Working for Darley has not only been educational but extremelyrewarding. This family-owned business displays a level of commitment to its customersand employees that is unmatched in the industry. It is great to work in an engineeringdepartment that strives to put out the highest quality products to the fire fightingindustry. I have learned a lot in my time here and look forward to many more yearsworking for Darley.”

Shane has been advancing in his personal life as well. In October 2011, he marriedhis long-time sweetheart Lauren. They live in Chippewa Falls and together are raisingtheir son, Ryder.

When he’s not designing pump solutions for our military and OEM customers, he enjoys biking, snowboarding, and spending time outdoors with friends and family.

I can’t accept nottrying! And wherever I go, I’m going with my heart.

I’ve tried my entirecareer at Darley and in my personal life to listen to people first –then listen, suggest, decide or listenmore, and now more than ever that’simportant due to all of the challengingchanges at Darley. Did you ever see a fishmounted on a wall with its mouth shut?

It could have been easy this month tosay I’m not going to write a column. However, Newton’s Law of Inertia immedi-ately came to mind “objects at rest tendto stay at rest.” So keep moving!

Five years ago I made a note as follows:If the student surpasses the teacher, that is an honor to the teacher. I now feel thatis happening at Darley – that’s good!

At Darley and in our personal lives, it’simportant to question everything, to takenothing for granted, and always to seekthe truth.

A lot is written about ethics which allboils down to what we do and decideeach day.

As Thoreau commented, “Shall I go toheaven or a-fishing.” I concluded heavencan wait.

I have also noted with a smile years agothe following about retirement! It’s half themoney (or less) and twice the spouse!(With Fran, that’s wonderful).

Why did God make the world round? So you couldn’t look too far down theroad – that’s okay.

Have a great 2012 – it’s opportunity time!I promote all of you to be iconoclasts –“they do what others say can’t be done.”How? By seeing things differently.

A closing thought – do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.

EMPLOYEE PROFILE

If you were to take a look at our Strategic Direction, you would see that one of the areas that we focus upon is Technology. This includes much of the infrastructure that we use for running our business.

Thanks to our Darley Demanders, our business hasgrown tremendously over the past few years. Duringthat time we also acquired our Odin Foam Divisionand our Ohler Division. Each division was running its own separate ERP system. The systems either did not talk toeach other or shared information on a very limited basis. We determined it was time for a new ERP system that couldbe used by all divisions of the company and that would behighly scalable toward future growth.

After a fairly extensive search and vetting, we selected Oracle JD Edwards Enterprise One.We started the first phase of implementation in March of 2011. We went live in our ItascaCorporate headquarters in October 2011. We are now beginning the second phase of the implementation at our Chippewa Falls, WI and Janesville, IA locations.

Some have compared installing a new system to getting a root canal. It is expensive, invasive, and painful. Sometimes there are complications. Sometimes the pain lingers on afterthe procedure is done. But, in the end, the pain is gone and the tooth is saved. We have gonethrough this in Itasca. Most of the pain has gone away. We are now starting to be able to takeadvantage of some of the new functionality that this software offers.

Our customers are now seeing a new and improved invoice document and a new monthlystatement. It is now much easier for us to send documents by e-mail. The software has thecapability for our customers and suppliers to connect through a portal. They will be able to usethe portal to check on their orders. We don’t have the portal turned on yet. That might notcome online until after we have the main features of the software up and running in all locations.

This is just one of our continuing investments in technology. Our engineering departmenthas been heavily involved in a new program to analyze and improve the design of our pumpimpellers.

We at Darley will continue to move forward in all areas of our Strategic Direction so that wecan continue to serve the world’s first responder and tactical communities by providing high-quality, safe, and innovative products.

Crimson recently delivered a Transformer pumperwith a Darley PSP pump to the capital city of Santiago,Chile. Sold and serviced by Crimson dealer FerexpoS.A. Santiago is a unique major city protecting fourmillion citizens with a solely volunteer brigade!

Captain Sebastian Mocarquer of the Santiago FD comments, "Our new heavy rescue truck was designedto improve our safety levels, gain higher efficiency levels and enhance our operational capabilities, performing in both rescue and fire ground operations. The key for combining all of theaims was to choose a Transformer equipped truck, so we could fit all of the necessarygear without compromising valuable space in the truck."

In November 2011, Darley Sales Representative Ed Wright visited Uganda while on ahumanitarian mission to help train local fire services on EMT and firefighting. While there,Ed and his team found themselves at the mercy of armed bandits. They were driving fromthe airport to Mubende, loaded with much-needed medical equipment and teachingsupplies when they were ambushed. Armed bandits stopped them on the highway. Ed says, “All our money and goods were taken. It is rather humbling to have a machete held to your throat while you arebeing restrained on the ground.”

Amazingly, no one was injured and the police actedquickly and apprehended the bandits. Ed comments, “Thepolice obtained a sniffer dog from a neighboring town'sbarracks and had four of the five bandits arrested. Most ofour items and money were returned within hours — wildlyunheard of in that area of the world. I pray for their souls, asthey face a very dark and brief future under Ugandan law.”

PUMP SCHOOL & CAFS ACADEMY

Hi, my name isSophie Darley andI am 17 years old. This summer I wasfortunate enough to have the amazing opportunity to go to Ecuador with my Dad on amedical mission trip. We went to remote poortowns outside of Quito. The trip was the mosteye-opening experience of my life.

While in Ecuador, we helped by taking vitalsigns, making patient files and my personalfavorite, giving fluoride treatments to kids andthen getting to play with them while theirparents saw the doctors. The people in Ecuadorwere so appreciative of our help. It made me feelgood to help them.

I would like to be a teacher when I grow up.For the last 6 months, every day after school I’ve participated in a student teaching program with first grade students. This trip solidified my feelings about this career path. I think a jobwhere I’m helping kids would be the best and Iwould love getting up for work every morning.

After experiencing this poverty, I feel soblessed for everything I have been given in life.If you ever have a chance to do something likethis, I would highly recommend that you do it.
