COASTAL SYMPHONY OF GEORGIA / 2 FEBRUARY 2016

Experience the Excitement …

at Brunswick High School Auditorium, when the orchestra fills the hall with the music of dances and dreams in this enchanting winter concert.

Following the lively Overture to Oberon, we are transported into all the fun and confusion of A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream. Mendelssohn wrote the Overture, Op. 21 at age 17 as a concert overture prompting Sir George Grove, English writer and founder of the Royal College of Music to call it “the greatest marvel of early maturity that the world has ever seen in music.” Mendelssohn later incorporated Op. 21 into Op. 61 which contained the incidental music that often accompanied Shakespeare’s play. The Dream Suite contains the purely instrumental movements that serve as overture, interludes between acts, and the wedding march at the close of the play. The suite is more commonly played alone as a concert piece, but given the clever instrumentation, a listener can easily imagine the dancing fairies, braying donkey, sleeping lovers, and comic confusion of the play. In the words of Puck, “Was it really all a dream?”

Following intermission, we arrive at Swan Lake and the story of the doomed love of Prince Sigfried and Princess Odette. The Swan Lake Suite represents nine selected numbers from Tchaikovsky’s magical Swan Lake Ballet. The composer premiered the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater in 1877, and immediately met opposition from both his musicians and dancers.

The orchestral players declared the music of “unprecedented difficulty,” while the dancers said it was simply too difficult to dance. His idea to organize a Suite in 1882 came to nothing, and the authorship of the concert suite, Op. 20a which was published after his death is unknown. Today it is the world’s most frequently performed ballet, albeit in shorter form than the original, and concert goers never tire of the richness and depth of the music which requires the full use and expertise of the orchestra.

It is interesting to note that while Mendelssohn was a child prodigy born into great wealth and opportunity, Tchaikovsky began his adult life as a government clerk. Mendelssohn would enjoy immediate popularity, then misfortune and finally become recognized as one of the finest composers of the early Romantic period. Meanwhile, Tchaikovsky continued his youthful interest in music, but declared at age 21, “even if I actually had any talent, it could hardly be developed now.” How fortunate for us that he turned out to be wrong!

Salon Recital

Remember stories of nineteenth century drawing rooms and parlors where inspiring hosts would gather their guests to enjoy up and coming composers and musicians? “Salons” were an opportunity to be entertained and exchange thought on emerging artistic trends.

The Coastal Symphony of Georgia invites you to step back to that gentler era and experience an evening of musical talent and appreciation in a quiet, intimate setting in two special homes with several of The Symphony’s most talented musicians. Afterward, during the reception, take the opportunity to discuss the evening’s performance with friends or the musicians themselves.

The Symphony offers two recitals for those who want to enjoy this unique opportunity.

On February 29, in the lovely home of Carol Norton, Ms. Aurelia Duca – Southeast Georgia Health System Concertmaster Chair – will perform with piano accompanist Yukino Miyake. Ms. Duca mesmerized everyone with her solo performance at our season’s opening concert. You will not want to miss the opportunity to hear this charming, personable young woman with incredible talent in a setting such as this.

Our appreciation to Carol Norton for hosting this evening and to her co-hosts MJ and Sam Choate, Jack Dinos, Janice Lamattina, Gail and Scott Ledbetter, Debbie and Peter Murphy and Karleen and John Thompson for their continued generosity.

Also mark your calendar for our second recital, April 30, when sounds of the uncommon but beautiful combination of flute, oboe and piano will float above ocean waves at Anne and Tom Kitchin’s beachside home on Sea Island. Look for more information in the next newsletter.
