Our Deepest Fear by: Marianne Williamson
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our
darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to
be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God
that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” (skdesigns.com)
The Art of Floetry (Poetry)Desiree Sartin-Williams
Business Education, __ PeriodMrs. Sartin, MHS
Poetry Defined“Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience
expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional
response. Poetry has been known to employ meter and rhyme, but this is by no means necessary.
Poetry is an ancient form that has gone through numerous and drastic reinvention over time. The
very nature of poetry as an authentic and individual mode of expression makes it nearly impossible to
define.” (About.com)
Floetry DefinedTo flow with your poetry. To “own” your words as you speak
them to the world, with all your heart. To flow... like a river. *me
A rhyme that isn't considered just poetry or just a flow, but a mixed version of both. In a way, a poem that can be rapped.

A powerful flow of poetry. (knowledgerush.com)
Poetry has the power to unlock emotions - By: Penelope Carrington“BLACKSBURG - Nearly a year ago, poet Nikki Giovanni electrified mourners at a memorial ceremony for
victims at Virginia Tech with an emotional poem that brought attendees to their feet with a spontaneous cheer of solidarity and hope.
“We are Virginia Tech,“ Giovanni began.“We are sad today, and we will be sad for quite a while. We are not moving on, we are embracing our
mourning.““We are Virginia Tech.““We are strong enough to stand tall tearlessly, we are brave enough to bend to cry, and we are sad
enough to know that we must laugh again.““We are Virginia Tech.“Poetry, a simple communication tool developed for a preliterate society, has evolved in form over the
centuries. But as the first anniversary of the April 16 massacre at Tech approaches, Giovanni and other poets said poems remain a powerful medium for crystallizing what the heart shelters. In moments tragic and blissful, poetry can be a beacon of hope or a catalyst for healing and change. Coincidentally, the power of verse is being recognized during this, National Poetry Month.”
Each declaration in the Virginia Tech English professor’s chant poem served as salve and rallying cry for the Hokie community, reeling a day after student Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 others on campus before taking his own life. Giovanni’s poem reverberated well beyond the Blacksburg campus
that was embraced by the world in the aftermath of the tragedy - in part because of the strong sense of community illuminated by Giovanni’s words.

Personal Interview with Marilyn KellyTuesday, May 11, 2010; 7:00p.m.
What message would you give to all youth if you could speak all over the world? I promise YOU CAN! You can do anything that you set your mind and goals to. But just
thinking it, without work won’t make it happen. Who inspires you?
My great grandmother was such an inspiration. She was a powerful woman of God. My mom also. Well really anyone that is trying to make something of themselves.
What do you write? Well I do more than write. I draw, paint, write, dance, & teach. But I write poems, songs, stories,
skits, just about anything. I usually create the children poems for local churches for special occasions.
Why do you write poetry, my presentation for my students is about poetry? Poetry is a way to unwind or release words of love, disappointment, fear, empowerment, & any
other emotions/feelings that fill your mind. Words are Powerful. Speak a Word! Would you like to develop this talent?
Yes, I am currently developing my own talent by teaching. I love empowering young people and old alike. One of my favorite Bible Verses is Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Phenomenal Woman by: Maya Angelou
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them, They think I'm telling lies.
I say, It's in the reach of my armsThe span of my hips, The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips. I'm a womanPhenomenally. Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
I walk into a room. Just as cool as you please,And to a man, The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.I say, It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist,And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman Phenomenally.Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
Men themselves have wondered What they see in me.
They try so much But they can't touchMy inner mystery. When I try to show them
They say they still can't see. I say, It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile, The ride of my breasts,The grace of my style. I'm a woman
Phenomenally.Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
Now you understandJust why my head's not bowed. I don't shout or
jump aboutOr have to talk real loud. When you see me
passingIt ought to make you proud.
I say, It's in the click of my heels,The bend of my hair, the palm of my hand,The need of my care, 'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
Orange Moon by: Erykah Badu
Many nights he was aloneMany, many, many nights
His light was so bright that they turned awayAnd he stood alone
Every night and every dayThen he turned to me
He saw his reflection in me And he smiled at me when he turned to me
Then he said to me
How good it is, how good it isHow good it is, how good it is
I'm an Orange MoonI'm brighter than before
Brighter than ever beforeI'm an Orange Moon and I shine so bright
Cause I reflect the light of my sunI praise the day, he turned my way
And smiled at meHe gets to smile and I get to be orange, that I love
to be
How good it is, how good it isHow good it is, how good it isHow good it is, how good it isHow good it is, how good it is
(Oh...)Shine so bright
(Oh...)He ruled the day, I ruled the night
(Oh...)Shine, shine, shine
(Oh...)
How good it is, how good it isHow good it is, how good it isHow good it is, how good it isHow good he is, how god is
How good it is, how good it isHow good it is, how god is
How good it is, how good it is
I'm an orange moon I'm brighter than before, brighter
Reflecting the light of the sunSmile at me
