Head Teacher : Mrs Louise Morrison

Dear Parents/Carers Welcome to Dailly Primary School and Early Years Centre which is set in the heart of the village and serves the surrounding rural area. Our school is a brand new facility with state of the art equipment and resources which are all housed within the one building. Our school is a vibrant and happy place where pupils are actively encouraged to be all they can be. Pupils have a strong voice in the school and influence the World around them. Through this approach we foster responsible citizens, confident individuals, successful learners and effective contributors. Staff in Dailly Primary School and Early Years Centre are committed to ensuring that all of the learning experiences provided meet the needs and aspirations of the pupils, parents, staff and wider community of Dailly. The school and everyone associated with it, work to provide the highest quality education. We achieve this vision by creating a culture and ethos of high expectations and achievement. We have a history of strong business links within the community, which enables the children from an early age to develop their knowledge of and an appreciation of the World of Work. The school enjoys partnerships with many local businesses including Brunston Golf Club, McColl’s, Nestle and We hae Meat. The school plays a strong role in the community and participates in a number of local events including the Macmillan Cancer coffee morning, the Remembrance service and the annual gala. The school’s efforts to become involved in and support local issues have been praised. The children also benefit from the close working arrangements in the Girvan Cluster. Although a large, widely dispersed cluster, it has developed an ethos of co-operation and collaboration and a number of opportunities have been initiated to allow cluster working. We strive to involve all parents/carers fully in the life of the school and their children’s learning, through invitation to class open days, assemblies, whole school events and special lunches. This has given Parents/Carers opportunities to see the learning that that their children are involved in and has enabled us to build positive relationships with all of our families.

3

Overall, our learners are successful, confident, exercise responsibility and contribute to the life of the school and the wider community. We take positive and proactive steps to ensure that factors such as the learning environment, family circumstances, health needs or disability, social or emotional factors, are promptly identified and addressed effectively to ensure that they do not hinder their learning. The hard work and commitment of all staff, pupils and parents has generated a very positive school ethos and a desire to improve, permeates the school. The information in this handbook is intended as a guide for all parents/carers. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me at the school. I look forward to working with you in the future. Yours sincerely

Louise Morrison Head Teacher

STARTING OUR EARLY YEARS CENTRE

Following enrolment an induction meeting is arranged for parents. Children and parents will be invited to visit the Early Years Centre during Term 4, in May to meet the staff and become familiar with playroom. If dates are not suitable, parents/carers should contact the Early Years Centre where alternative dates will be arranged to accommodate you. Parents are notified by letter of their child’s start date during their first visit in June. Each child is assigned to a member of the Early Years Centre staff, who will take responsibility for the child’s progress, assessment and care both in and out of the Early Years Centre (key worker). Children will be admitted on a phased basis, in small groups. This provides the Early Years Centre Staff with an opportunity to build up a rapport with each individual child and it also allows each child time to find their way about the Early Years Centre. Parents are very welcome to come along to the Early Years Centre on their child’s first day. It is reassuring for your child to know you are close by and it also provides the opportunity for you to look round the centre, chat with the staff and to see first hand what goes on. You child will stay for 1 hour on the first day. Please note that many children will attend for the full session from Day 2 but some children may take time to settle. It would be unfair to gauge your child’s progress against that of others, as we all develop at our own pace. Every child is special and the needs of individuals vary enormously.

Clothing Children learn and enjoy themselves by having fun and taking part in a variety of activities - including messy ones! We provide aprons to protect clothing; however, we would encourage you to dress your child in play clothes such as tracksuits, sweatshirts, t- shirts which will help them:

To be comfortable To prevent spoiling ‘good’ clothes To become independent in dressing and undressing (especially

when using the toilet)

12

Children find dungarees difficult to manage and some belts can be tricky! Staff are always on hand to help but children can get distressed if they are unable to unfasten their trousers themselves. At the Early Years Centre, we enjoy outdoor play and nature walks around the local area. It is vital that children are dressed appropriately for the seasonal changes in order to do this e.g. Outdoor jackets and shoes. All children are encouraged to participate in P.E. We would be grateful if children were provided with a pair of soft-soled indoor sandshoes.

All clothing and belongings MUST be clearly labelled with your child’s name.

In the Early Years Centre the children are also encouraged to wear the sweatshirt and polo shirt. It helps the children to be very much part of their class the children are not worried about getting messy in their good clothes. As well as this it ensures that when the children are out on trips or out in the community as part of their weekly outdoor learning they can be easily identified. These are available from ‘BE SCHOOL WEAR (Border Embroideries)’ who provides the uniforms for the school and it offers Parents/Carers a variety of ways to purchase the uniform either online (www.beschoolwear.co.uk ) or in store, ‘School Trends’ in Ayr. Forms enabling you to purchase t-shirts are available from the school and will be issued in June during induction days.

13

Arrival and Collection of Children The Early Years Centre door is supervised by a member of staff at the beginning and the end of each session. To gain access out with these times please report to the main office and a member of staff will assist you.

Safety is of great importance. It is important that a responsible adult (18 years and above) brings and collects your child from the Early Years Centre. In the interests of your child’s safety, your child must be signed in and out. Please inform staff of any change of person collecting or dropping off your child. This avoids difficult situations.

Early Years Curriculum We aim to provide a well-balanced, planned programme of activities tailored to each individual child by providing suitable equipment in safe, nurturing surroundings. This will encourage the child’s natural curiosity and allow them the valuable opportunity to progress at their own pace in an educationally stimulating environment enabling them to achieve their full potential.

The first five years of a child’s life encompass a complex period of rapid growth and development. The experiences which children have during these early years exert a powerful influence on their long-term development and, more immediately, on their future learning.

Children in our Early Years Centre will also work within the Curriculum for Excellence. The main curricular areas are: Expressive Arts – art, drama, music and dance Health and Wellbeing Language - Literacy Mathematics - Numeracy Religious Moral Education Science Social Subjects Technologies

14

Building the Ambition

Building the Ambition (BTA) is the Scottish Government’s National Practice Guidance on Early Learning and Childcare Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014. The main areas of focus are based on Communication, Wellbeing and Curiosity.

At Dailly we plan experience and activities around Wellbeing such as understanding emotions, encouraging independence, learning about rules and routines, physical activities and many more both indoors and outdoors. We provide a wide range of experiences and activities to develop Communication through talking, sharing experiences, language games, writing and mark making opportunities, stories and many more throughout the nursery. Curiosity is very natural in children and at Dailly we provide many experiences and activities to promote this. We provide children with problem solving activities, different technologies, local environment, living things, music and rhythm. This happens all over the Early Years Centre both indoors and out.

Planning

When planning and providing a variety of opportunities and activities for your child/children we use Building the Ambition to ensure we fully consider what children need at different times in terms of the experiences and activities offered and high quality adult interaction should be linked and what their environment should contain. Building the Ambition is closely linked with Curriculum for Excellence which helps with planning a variety of experiences and activities for our children at Dailly.

We use information from parents/carers, children and staff, to plan and provide interesting challenging and achievable learning experiences, taking account of the individual needs, stage of development and interests of each child.

We have recently developed a more responsive way of planning with the children and evidence of this planning and the activities carried out are are included in our Big Books (floorbooks). At the end of the topic all of the work is collated into the floorbook, with staff evaluations and a record of all the experiences and outcomes covered from Curriculum for Excellence. Children and parents are welcome to look at the book, and talk about its contents, during Stay and Play sessions. This allows children to share their learning with others and recall areas of interest to be explored again in the future.

15

The plan is then used in conjunction with the Curriculum for Excellence framework which will provide a framework for your child’s learning. All staff are involved in weekly planning sessions, with plans monitored by the Head Teacher on a regular basis.

Transition from Pre-school to Primary 1

There are many opportunities for pupils from the Early Years Centre to interact with teachers, staff and pupils in the primary school. All children take part in school celebrations and special events within the school. An Early Level Skills Record of progress and achievement (Learning Journey) is compiled for every child, this record spans three years of development from ante pre-school through to the end of Primary one. This record enables the Primary one teacher to have a clear view of your child’s development and provide them with an appropriate curriculum in Primary one. Visits to the Primary one class base for pre-school pupils are organised throughout the year. Senior pupils visit the Early Years Centre regularly to work with the Pre-school children on a buddying scheme.

Working Together to Support Learning

We operate a key worker system in which each staff member is responsible for a small group of children. Please take time to share experiences daily as you bring and collect your child. The school recognises the role of parents/carers as the child’s first educator. Throughout Early Years Centre your child will complete an e-Profile where Key Workers use a Book Creator app on the iPad to record and document significant learning for your child as well as key events during their Early Years. These are then shared with parents/carers during Care Plan meetings, Stay and Play sessions and at the end of each Term. We set aside a monthly “Stay and Play” for you to visit and join in the activities but you are always welcome to join us at any time. If you have any concerns or issues you would like to raise please come and discuss them. Working together for your child’s learning is paramount to us. Therefore there will be numerous opportunities each term for you and your child to participate in groups together. These will led by the Early Years worker as well as Dailly Early Years Centre staff. These opportunities can include Bookbug, PEEP, outdoor, make and taste sessions with your child etc.

16

Children with Additional Support Needs Each child progresses as an individual. Pupils who may be experiencing difficulties will be given additional support within the Early Years setting by staff. The Head Teacher, staff, Parents/Carers and other professionals in consultation, can help to provide an appropriate programme of work for individuals with special needs.

Equality

All children are encouraged to develop positive attitudes towards others whose gender, language, religion or culture for example is different from their own. Parents/Carers from Ethnic Minorities who celebrate particular religious festivals may wish their children to be absent in order to attend religious events. Such occasions will be supported by the establishment. As Dailly Early Years Centre is a Rights Respecting Early Years Centre we aim to provide children with an educational and social environment which will enable all children to reach their full potential irrespective of race, creed, sex or religion. It is our intention that no resources presented to the children should contain material that could be considered offensive to any sectors of the community. In our present multicultural society, we hope to foster an ethos of respect and tolerance to different races and ethnic minorities and expect each pupil to treat others, as they themselves would expect to be treated.

To promote this statement we: 1. Make all areas of the curriculum available to boys and girls alike.

2. Apply disciplinary measures in a uniform manner to both sexes.

3. Allocate tasks within the school fairly.

4. Avoid the use of any language, or texts, by staff or pupils, which could be looked upon as racist or sexist.

17

Promoting Positive Behaviour through Circle Time Personal, social and emotional development is about, “emotional well-being, knowing who you are and where you fit in and feeling good about yourself. It is also about developing respect for others, social competence and a positive disposition to learn.” Personal, social and emotional development is vital for success all areas of learning. Promoting positive behaviour using Quality Circle Time and other strategies in the Early Years Centre can help to equip pupils with these skills. Planned activities in Circle Time encourage pupils to explore, experiment, plan and make decisions for themselves. Circle time encourages pupils to talk about their own experiences, take turns, share and co-operate. It provides pupils with opportunities to form relationships with adults and other children In Dailly Early Years Centre we follow the Golden Rules and encourage children : Be gentle, don’t hurt anybody. Be kind and helpful, don’t hurt people’s feelings. Be honest, don’t cover up the truth. Work hard, don’t waste time. Look after property, don’t waste or damage things. Listen to people, don’t interrupt.

Medical Information

It is very important that Early Years Centre staff are aware of any medical problems that your child may have. These will be treated confidentially. If your child requires to be given medicines at regular intervals (such as treatment for asthma) you will be asked to fill in a form stating dosage, timing etc. A daily record is kept and held in the school office. Most medicines given by a doctor e.g. an antibiotic may be given at home before and after attending the Early Years Centre. If this is not possible, you may be requested to come to Early Years Centre to administer the medicine. All medicines must state the child’s name and correct dosage on a pharmacy label as per the doctors’ instructions. We are not permitted to administer medicines bought over the counter of a pharmacy. We cannot administer the first dose of a prescribed medicine. All of the staff within the Early Years Centre are trained First Aiders.

18

Health professionals, such as the Health Visitor, Nurse, doctor and dentist visit the Early Years Centre regularly to speak to the children. Parents will be issued with letters and permission slips for pupils to receive routine eye tests, during the pre-school year. Should you have any concerns about medical issues, please speak with the staff. Minor accidents and upsets which occur are dealt with by staff. If your child becomes unwell at any time, staff will contact parents /carers. If you are unavailable, the emergency contact will be used. Please inform staff of any changes to circumstances so that the contacts are up to date. All accidents are recorded, outlining what happened and the steps taken by the staff. The adult collecting the child will be fully informed by staff about any incidents.

Snack and Healthy Eating

Healthy eating is promoted at snack time. A carton of milk and water are available each day along with a variety of snacks. It is vital that parents inform Early Years Centre staff if any children have food allergies or of any foods which they do not wish their children to try. A weekly contribution of £1.50 is collected on a Monday. This money provides snacks and other small treats for the children. Our Early Years Centre adheres to the Setting the Table Guidance, 2015. Menus, along with any allergens that they contain are displayed in advance on the notice board for parents/carers. Always inform staff of allergies or any other dietary requirements. Children having their lunch at school, can either bring a packed lunch or buy a school dinner. Menus for lunches will be available in August 2019. Applications for free school meals for children aged 3 to 5 will be accepted from parents/ carers who meet the eligibility criteria and whose child attends a local authority or partnership centre providing early learning and childcare for more than 4 hours a day and over the lunchtime period. Forms are available upon request from the school or downloaded from the website:- http://www.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/schools/meals/free-school-meals.aspx

19

Tooth brushing

Dailly Early Years Centre encourages tooth brushing after snack. The Tooth brushing scheme is managed and maintained by the Department of Dental Health Promotion and Epidemiology. They provide children with toothbrushes and information and practical demonstrations on how to care for their teeth.

Parental contributions We would appreciate if parents could donate one kitchen roll and a box of tissues at the start of each term. Donations of “junk”, cardboard, cartons, yoghurt pots and newspapers are also greatly appreciated.

Birthdays At birthday time we celebrate each child’s birthday by singing “Happy Birthday” and giving a card and small gift. Unfortunately due to Setting the Table Guidance 2015, we are no longer able to accept any form of birthday cake (home made or purchased).

Fire Drills Fire drills take place within the school on a regular basis. Procedures for evacuating the building are displayed throughout the Early Years Centre. Children have the opportunity to rehearse fire drill procedures.

Smoking

Dailly Primary School and Early Years Centre is a smoke free zone in accordance with South Ayrshire Council policy. Parents and visitors should refrain from smoking in the building and in the playground. We appreciate your co-operation in this matter.

Emergency closure procedures We make every effort to maintain a full educational service, but on some occasions circumstances arise which lead to disruption. Schools may be affected by, for example, severe weather, and temporary interruption of transport, power failures or difficulties of power supply. In such cases we shall do all we can to let you know about the details of closure or re-opening. We shall keep you in touch by using letters, texts, notices in local shops and community centres and in the press,on local radio and on the Council website – www.south-ayrshire.gov.uk

Photographer The photographer visits the school and Early Years class each year. Parents/Carers will be kept fully informed of dates for this.

20

Parent Partnership There is a lively and enthusiastic Parent Partnership, which organises social and educational events throughout the session. The committee meet approximately once per month in the school to organise events. The Early Years has benefitted from many of the fund raising events and activities. The Parent Partnershipis always looking for volunteers and helpers throughout the year. At Dailly Primary we call the Parent Council, the Parent Partnership. Chairperson - Lynda Connelly Secretary - Jillian Nelson Treasurer - Jan Vance

Child Protection All staff provide support to children and young people in their daily work and have a vital role to help protect them from harm. Staff help to keep children and young people safe and well by:

Helping them learn about their personal safety Being a trusted adult who children and young people may turn to for help, and

who will take them seriously Identifying when children and young people may need help Understanding the steps that must be taken when there are concerns for

children’s and young people’s safety and well-being. The Child Protection Co-ordinator is Mrs Morrison, Head Teacher, who will co-ordinate the school’s response to concerns for children and young people’s safety and wellbeing. The Authority has a designated officer for Child Protection who will ensure schools work effectively to keep children safe and well. If you have any concerns about the safety and wellbeing of a child or young person, including a ‘gut feeling’, talk about this to the school’s Child Protection Co-ordinator or another member of staff. There is a copy of the child protection policy available on request.

21

Quality Assurance A rigorous monitoring and evaluation programme developed within the school ensures high standards are kept in all aspects of the service. This is undertaken by all Nursery staff as well as the school management team. As a registered centre, we are inspected regularly by the Care Inspectorate and we will be included in any future joint Care Inspectorate / Education Scotland Inspection programmes. The last Care Inspectorate report was carried out in June 2017 and a copy is available from the Early Years Centre or on the website www.careinspectorate.com or by telephoning 0845 600 9527. Summary of Grades : Quality of Care and Support 5 Very Good Quality of Environment 4 Good

Assessment and Recording

Sharing of information between parents and staff is very important. Staff observe the children and keep notes of their progress which parents are welcome to access. Please feel free to discuss with staff your child’s on-going progress and any concerns you may have. Parents’ Open Days will be held and information about these will be sent out in Newsletters. During your child’s time at the Early Years Centre he/she will make, with the help of the adults, an “e-Profile”. This is a record of their activities and successes. This will be sent/emailed to you each term to keep you up to date on your child’s progress with their learning. As mentioned earlier staff keep a “Learning Journey” for all ante-pre and pre-school children. This is for all Early Years Centre children in South Ayrshire and follows your child to P1 as they complete the Curriculum for Excellence Early level skills and is part of the transition process. In line with national guidance, within 28 days of your child starting Early Years Centre, you will be invited to come in and meet with your child’s key worker to create a Care Plan for them. This will be based on the eight wellbeing indicators:- safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included. Targets will be created together for your child to work towards over the coming term. You will be invited into the Early Years Centre each term to review progress made on the current care plan and to create a new one.

22

South Ayrshire Council have introduced 10 key Developmental Milestones in Communication and Language, Numeracy and Health and Wellbeing. All pre-school children are assessed in the September of their pre-school year and the results from these help tailor the learning for the children over the coming months. The Developmental Milestones check is redone in the May of their pre-school year. These checkers are available for you as parents to see at any time. The end of year report for pre-schoolers is based on the Developmental Milestones where you will see what your child has achieved. Developing your child’s communication and language is key for us at Dailly. Thus we have staff who are trained in assessing their progress and further building upon in by carrying out various small group communication activities. These are provided to all children as well as those who require additional support for communication and language.

Parental Partnership

The Early Years Centre has an ‘Open Door’ policy which means parents are welcome to visit. We encourage you to become actively involved in your child’s education during their time at the Early Years Centre. We invite you to spend a morning or afternoon within the Early Years Centre observing your child and helping with daily activities. If you have a special knowledge or interest in any subject e.g. art and craft, nature, music or are involved in something which might interest the children e.g. fire service, police, please inform the Early Years Centre Staff. Information about the activities your child is involved in during the time he/she is in the Early Years Centre is displayed in the cloakroom ‘Our Current Focus’ and is updated on a regular basis. If you have any worries at all about your child in the Early Years Centre, please feel free to come along and talk about them. Working together, we can usually sort things out very quickly. You will receive Early Years Centre news each month we also send out a special Early Years Centre Newsletter each term.

Staff from the primary class and Early Years Centre will work together throughout the year to ensure a smooth transition from pre-5 to Primary 1. Early Years Centre children will be involved in active learning with the P1`s. They will attend school assemblies, and other school relevant school events. All this helps to ensure a smooth learning transition to P1. A Record of your child’s learning and achievements will be passed on to the receiving establishment.

Criteria to consider regarding ‘Readiness for Primary School’ By the time they reach the age of 4 or 5 there are already individual differences in each child’s development, learning and levels of independence. Occasionally there may be a need for some children to have their entry to school deferred. It is assumed that should this be the case for your child, then some previous discussion with the Early Years Centre teacher and Head Teacher will have taken place.
