BRENT HEATH giving a workshop and sem i nar in New Bedford, MA

Northeast Regional Daffodil Show held in the Fern Room at Longwood Gardens.

"DAFFODIL WALK" at New York Botanic Garden co-sponsored by the Greenwich GC, the NYBG and the Daffodil Mart.

To all Daffodil Fanciers:

We are pleased to present "Daffodils for Show and Gar- den". We hope that this will be the first in a series of color identification guide booklets on daffodils for American gar- deners. The flowers in this booklet were pictured, almost exclusively, as they grew in our fields in Gloucester, Virginia. Color and size can sometimes vary according to climate and soil conditions. Since these conditions can be extremely dif- ferent across the country, please keep in mind that your daffs may differ slightly from ours in hue or size. We hope this guide booklet will help you in identifying cultivars in your garden, in choosing new cultivars, and in being a more suc- cessful exhibitor and grower.

Nothing beats seeing the flowers in person. So, plan to visit one of the following gardens listed below where there are good representative daffodil collections; visit one of the many daffodil shows listed in the ADS Journal or visit The Daffodil Mart (by appointment) on one of its "Open Garden" weekends in the spring.

Please let us know how we can help with daffodil needs or questions. We are also available for consultation and lectures.

Happy Daffodilling!

DAFFODIL CULTURE

Daffodils have four basic requirements to grow well and produce abundant quality flowers: proper soil conditions, nutrition, sunlight and water,

First, pick your site and prepare your beds ahead of time. Daffodils grow best in full sun, however, some reds and pinks benefit when grown in partial shade by producing more color- ful blossoms. The bulbs are tolerant of up to 1/2 day shade.

For show flowers, one should consider a site with wind protection, i.e. hedges or windbreaks.

A spot with excellent drainage is of utmost importance. One can improve a poorly drained site with the installation of drainage tiles, by raising beds and/or the addition of well decomposed organic material and sand.

Proper fertilization will keep your daffodils blooming for seasons to come. Daffodils prefer low nitrogen/moderate phosphorous/high potash fertilizer with trace elements made available during their entire growth season — fall to spring. We recommend a top dressing (as opposed to putting fertil- izer in the bed as this may tend to burn the bulbs and cause them to rot) in the fall after planting (this type of slow release fertilizer may be obtained from The Daffodil Mart through our mailorder catalogue). For organic nutrients, use a little cotton- seed or Blood Meal for nitrogen — Bone Meat for phosphor- ous and calcium — and New Jersey Greensand or wood ashes for potash. BONE MEAL IS NOT A COMPLETE BULB FOOD! Bone meal to bulbs equates to broccoli to humans in that, although broccoli is a very nutritious vegetable, a diet of broccoli alone would leave us rather weak and unhealthy. Unfortunately, bone meal also attracts rodents and dogs, who may dig up your bulbs to get to the bone meal.

Watering your bulbs may be necessary if you do not get sufficient rain ( 1/2 inch per week generally). Water is needed in the fall to assure good root growth before freezing weather sets in; again in the spring when active top growth starts; and in April and May, the most critical time, when the bulbs are manufacturing food for next years bloom. A soaker hose like "Leaky Pipe Soaker" is excellent for this.

To keep flowers up to "show quality' size, the bulbs should probably be dug every 3 to 5 years. Dig about eight weeks after the flowers bloom when the foliage begins to turn yellow but before it disappears completely. If you prefer, you may separate the bulbs and plant them right back the same day they were dug.

Daffodils make wonderful companion plants in perennial gardens and borders. Don't be afraid to experiment with dif- ferent combination plantings!

We hope the above is informative and will help you in having a more beautiful garden and in winning many blue ribbons!
