• 3500 financial members 2007-2008 – 3045 eligible members were APDs– 400 student members currently

How can you get involved in DAA? Join an IG

• Don’t join every IG in your first year out!

• Find an IG that specifically interests you or the area you want to work in and be an active member:

– Contribute to journal reviews

– Provide case studies

– Highlight new relevant articles in the media

– Seek out new food products to share

– Offer to write the minutesDo something to get noticed by potential employers

Membership• Categories

• Full/part-time• Not currently employed - Unemployed, career break,

study, parental, extended travel in Australia or overseas• Not working in Related Industry• Retired• Student Dietitian• Overseas (and working)

• Associate membership - for non-dietitians with acceptable qualifications

• Current student fee is $106.70 for full year and half price after Sept 08

DAA is not a union….

• Health Services Union (HSU) is affiliated with your workplace

• HSU members work together to confront issues at work and provide a better workplace.

• DAA is the dietitian professional member organisation.

The APD Program

‘How do I know if a dietitian is up-to-date?’

Look for an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD)

What is an APD?

• Credible practising dietitian, who is recognisedby peers

• Committed to DAA Codes of Conduct and Ethics and the Charter of Patient Rights– Breach of this can mean removal from APD register

• Committed to active CPD (30 hrs a year)– identifying goals and undertaking related activities each year

to gain / maintain APD status

The APD Credential

• APD is recognised as promoting quality service and expertise

• Protected trademark • A way to market individual practitioners and the

profession• Eligibility criteria for Medicare and DVA• Advanced Practitioner status (Adv APD) with

experience• New grads gain provisional status and follow a

mentor program to gain full status (Includes 26 weeks of mentoring)

initiatives • CPD resources – to develop standards for

our profession• More job opportunities

– Some selection criteria ask especially for APD status

• An information kit is available for more details • APD materials provided on joining

How to become an APD• All APDs must complete the provisional APD

• Provisional phase – Requires completion of at least 30 hours CPD

– 26 weeks of a mentoring partnership

– Requirements completed within 2 years of joining

• Mentoring partnership must be formalised and documented – learning objectives, confirmation of contact

• Only DAA are aware of provisional APD status– eg on business cards you may put APD credential

– Not required to state you are provisional APD.

• Online facility for recording learning goals, CPD activities and learning outcomes

– This is necessary to gain / maintain APD status

• Easy to use

• No need for hard copies

Choosing a mentor• The mentor must have full APD status

• What qualities are you looking for in a mentor?– Certain practice, specialty, experience you are

interested in– What sort of person could you form an effective

partnership with?– What mode of contact best suits you? – Phone, in

person etc

• Prepare a list of potential mentors– Approach them and ask– Stuck? Contact DAA National Office for suggestions

Further APD recognition

• DAA formally recognises APDs who are professional leaders in their field of nutrition and dietetics

• The program has two further credentials:

Advanced APD (AdvAPD) and Fellow (FDAA)

• Fellow is considered an honour by DAA
