A SMART DIABETIC WRISTBANDINTRODUCTION
Those who are suffereing from diabetes do not have available acces to techonology that allows for regular and accurate monitoring to be made for their blood sugar levels. This is a problem as there are millions of people around the world and over 225,00 people suffering from this condition in New Zealand (Diabetes New Zealand, 2008). A solution to this is by creating a techonolgy that can allow diabetics to dose themselves more accurately and monitor several other inputs to maintain and manage their diabetes. This techonology will be incorporated into “A Smart Wristband”.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
We intend to provide the world’s most accurate and reliable technology for those suffering from diabetes. Changing the way of maintaining blood sugar levels providing an easy, precise and most innovative technology available to all. Also to improve the quality of life of diabetic sufferers all around the world.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Medical Devices Industry
Industry: Medical Devices Industry. Those who supply technology to provide healthcare devices.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: Low As this is the only product that is available that
provides this techonology if the buyer needs it
there are few places to purchase it from
therefore their choices are limited resulting is low
buyer power. The only other devices available
that are similar do not provide the same accuracy
and detailed evaluation of the blood sugar levels.

Supplier power: Low There are many places where the techonology to
create this product are found. As this is just a
combination of different devices of testing into
one product (Qualified Supplier Directory, 2014 )
Threat of new entrants: Low As this is an innovative idea on monitoring and
maintain diabetes, there is a low threat of new
entrants as it is hard for a new firm to come into
an industry and start up a new technology to
produce. This is because you need the medical
knowledge and supplies to be able to create this
and it is very hard to get into this industry.
Threat of substitutes: High As many other attempts to create techonolgy or
apps to do these things designed in this product
and have failed this shows there arent many
substitute products. (Health apps don’t save
people, people do, Bradley 2013). Although there
are alternative ways of montioring your diabetes
none of these are as effiecient as the one as
proposed but they are still effective in a way of
monitoring health just not as accurate, people
can still maintain with the previous techonolgy
therefore the threat of substitutes is high.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
Low As there is not many existing competitors in this
industry this means the rivalry is low because
there arent many to compete with. The only
existing competitors are those who sell inferior
subsitute products such as the continuous
glucose monitoring devices. (Diabetes care, 2010)
Overall attractiveness of the industry: This industry is fairly attractive as the buyer power is low, supplier power is low, rivalry is low and the treat of new entrants is also low this means that there isnt much of a risk to enter this industry and there arent many barriers to entry. Although there is risk in entering the industry as there is a high threat of substitute products, these products are
inferior and out of date. It is likey that any new innovation would out do the existing products. Therefore entering this industry could be very profitable and a good decision for a firm.
3.3 Customers and Their Needs
The target group of customers for this industry are those in the medical sector suffering from type 2 diabetes as this product provides technology specialised for these people. The most important factor for people who suffer from this illness is maintaining and managing it (Diabetes New Zealand, 2008). The needs of these targeted customers is to have something that can monitor their type two diabetes accurately and precisely, this relieving any stress relating to their treatment.
3.4 The Product and Service
As it is often hard for people with busy lives and other things on their minds rather then monitoring their blood sugar levels, the “Smart Diabetic Wrist band” is where this comes into place, giving these targeted customers something they no longer need to be concerned about as the wristband does all the work for them. This product is easy to operate as it is an automatic techonology that monitors the blood sugar levels within the wristband and evaluates is treatment is needed. This removing the stress and panic from the diabetes sufferers lives, which is one of the main concerns of these people.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Suppliers would be those who supply medical screening/monitoring equipment such as FDI Medical and Qmed. These are who supplies what is needed to create the products and make it possible for the product to be made and distributed. Whereas the partners would be those such as diabetic researchers or specialists, they can partner up with the company to reinforce to the quality of the product, to enusre it actually works and is the best option to use. And can alos provide feedback on how to improve the product. Another partner could be the medical board, suggesting this as the best option for care for patients that suffer from diabetes.
3.6 Strategy:
As this company is providing a solution to a narrow target of customers, those suffering from diabetes and because this is a new innovation of medical care, creating a better lifestyle, also the equipment and software that will be needed for this will be fairly costly, resulting in the cost strategy being in the high cost section. It is also high cost as this is an improvement on life and those that are willing to make there life easier would be willing to pay highly for this.
The overall strategy is therefore focused strategy (differentiation).
3.7 Value Chain Activity:
The most important value chain activity for this business is technology devolopment. The reason for this is as stated in the vision statement it is important to provide the easiest, most reliable and innovative technology available. Because of this, technology is the most important factor as the technology used for the wristband must be up to date and as accurate as possible to provide the best possible outcome for customers to use.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. A key business process is the testing process. This is an important process as it is when the
trailing stage is happening to see how well the product represents the vision of the company and
how well it’s going work. If it is fit for purpose, safe and operational for customers.
3.8.2. Another key business process is the Product analysis process. This is an important process as
the vision is to be the most innovative technology therefore there needs to be ongoing research and
develop to be able to update and maintain the high standard of technology they provide.

As this is for people who suffer from diabetes the main factor of this product is the innovative
technology incorporating the different testing mechanisms within the wristband to allow the
most accurate and reliable readings to determine when and how much treatment they require
to take. Because of this information systems and information technolgy are very important
factors as these are the only ways to ensure these needs are met by keeping up to date with
technology and producing this product in the most efficient way possible.
