3Warum Raumfachwerke?
Warum Raumfachwerke?
Construction System M 12. The Advantages of Spaceframes.
MEROFORM ConstructionSystem M12, a standardized constructionunit consisting of manufactured modularparts for assembly of self-supportingframe works, i.e. two-dimensional andspaceframe structures.
MEROFORM spaceframes mean:creative design using geometric figures:octahedron, tetrahedron, cube, semi-octahedron and diagonal section of thecube. By adding the same or different
geometric figures you obtain self-supporting and solid frameworks.
Panelling in various materials givesplenty of scope for attractive architecturaldesigns in a variety of areas:Stands and displays for exhibitions, tradeshows and public shows, advertisingtowers, decorations for film andTV studios, window dressing, interiordesign, shopfittings and lightingstructures.
The Advantages of Spaceframes.Nature has demonstrated to us theessential elements of all constructions.Mankind only imitates what has alreadybeen created. Nature hardly ever wastesresources and efforts, except where thesurvival of a species and creation of newis at stake.
Economy is one of the basic laws ofnature. What matters is the relationbetween construction material used, thespace thus created, and load bearingcapacity.
This light-construction system, imitatingthe laws of nature, is the basic principleon which the MEROFORM space framestructures are founded.
The stems of many plants, in theshape of tubes with "nodes" to shortenthe static length, are typical constructionalelements designed to cope with bendingstress with alternating direction of force.
The internal architecture of a bone shows, apart from its tubular form, a networkof intersecting supports.A natural spaceframe structure.

The MEROFORM construction systemM12 is composed of only two elements:the MERO node and the MERO tube.Their consistency and design are basedon the structural laws of nature whichhave been proved over millions of yearsin the composition of organisms andcrystals. According to these basicinalterable laws, the length of theMEROFORM tube grows in geometricalprogression by the factor 2.The law of growth of MERO tubestherefore corresponds to the law of growthfor many natural construction elements.
Elemente des Bausystems M12 MERO-Knoten
The Elements of Construction System M12 MERO Node
The next largest tube length is alwaysequal to the length of the side oppositethe right angle of the preceding right-angled triangle in a row of right-angledtriangles.
The MERO Nodeis derived from the cube. It has 26 faces,i.e. 8 equilateral triangles and 18 squares. However, for practical and economicalreasons the node is actually made froma ball-shaped blank with rounded offcorners, thus giving 18 circular cuttingplanes.
These alone are important for practicalapplication. The circular planes are at auniform distance to the centre of the ball.In the middle of each there is a tap holesize M12.The axes of all tap holes intersect in thecentre of the node. Depending on theposition of the cutting planes angles of45, 60 90 120, 135 and 180 willresult.

The Tubesof the MEROFORM construction systemM12, which have threaded ends on bothsides, introduce tensile or pressure forcesinto the node.
The length of the MERO tubes growsin geometrical progression by thefactor 2.

The Angles of the Node Axesto each other are the same as the anglesof the plane diagonals in a cube, i.e. 90,60 and 45.
The illustrated figures are geometricallyderived from the cube and accordinglyformed using the MERO standard node.By continuously adding different figuresversatile spaceframe structures can beachieved.
For practical purposes this means:All of the regular spaceframe structurescan be assembled with standard nodesand a maximum of two different tubelengths.Special nodes (different angle oradditional holes) are required in only afew exceptional cases, which means thatthe stocking of parts can be drasticallyreduced while having a large number ofdifferent possibilities for design and use.

Assembly of MEROFORM Spaceframes
A limited number of different construc-tional elements, rigidly installedconnections with metric righthand threadand only portable assembly tools arefeatures that make this system a superiorchoice for use at fairs and exhibitions.
The sequence of assembly correspondsto the streamlined MERO constructionprinciple. To account for factors such as conditionsat site, necessary assembly staff orauxiliaries such as scaffolding or liftingequipment, there are three basic methodsof assembly.
Cantilever Erection:On the floor groups of tubes (usuallygroups of four, depending on the type ofspaceframe) are pre-assembled by handfrom single tubes and nodes.
Starting at one bearing point, the singlegroups of tubes are screwed together intheir final position and erected into spacein strip-like, truss-shaped grids to thenext bearing point. If necessary theseprojecting pieces can be temporarilystabilized by scaffolding the auxiliarysupports (consisting of nodes and tubes)until reaching the next bearing point.
Cantilever erection facilitates assemblywhere lifting equipment cannot be usedat the site.Furthermore auxiliary personnel can beemployed if the groups of tubes havebeen correctly pre-assembled on the floorby trained staff.

Montage der MEROFORM-Raumfachwerke
Assembly of MEROFORM Spaceframes
Panel Hoisting MethodOn the floor complete spaceframesare assembled outside of their finalinstallation positions, then placed ontothe supports or bearings with the helpof lifting equipment and connected. This technique is the fastest sincework can be done comfortably and safelyon the floor, however lifting equipmentis necessary.
Assembly in Sections:From single tubes and nodes spaceframesegments are pre-assembled on the floor. These are then lifted into position byhand or using hoisting equipment, placedon the temporary or permanent bearingsand screwed to the spaceframe that hasalready been installed. This method canbe supplemented by the cantilevertechnique. This method of assemblyoffers both the advantage of cantilevererection and the panel hoisting method, and helps reduce assembly time becausecomfortable work on the floor is possible.

Statik Belastung der Raumfachwerke
Statics Carrying Capacity of Spaceframes
The forces in the tubes are the same although the span is different.
Basic Facts:Although structures consisting of MERO-FORM components with mainly a decorativecharacter are not subject to the rules of theofficial MERO Approval, it is neverthelessnecessary to adhere to the principles of theMERO method of construction and to selecta design that satisfies safety and service-ability requirements.
Apart from dead weight, spaceframesusually have to bear loads due to panellingelements, lighting fixtures and display items.Various criteria such as free span, type ofbearing and load distribution are of essentialimportance and must certainly be takeninto consideration. One should always aim at utilizing the fullcarrying capacity of the components, sinceoversizing reduces the economy of anyspace frame. The following recommendations and tablesare intended as a guide for assessing therespective site situation in order to choosethe right size of components, select appro-priate material and assess cost aspects. They must not be used as a substitutefor a stress analysis which is for examplerequired of platforms or two-storeyexhibition stands.
Depth of Construction and Span.Depth of construction has a major influenceon the span of a spaceframe structure.By increasing the construction depth it isusually possible to obtain a larger free spanof the spaceframe if the permissible ratioof slenderness of the tubes is not exceeded.
Influence of Tube Diameter. The influence of tube diameter on thespan can be quite different and must beconsidered together with the length ofthe tube. Once again, the ratio of slender-ness of the tubes is all-important.Relevant information is given in the work-ing load tables from page 18 onwards.

Usually, the load burden passes into thespaceframe via the nodes. Designingthe tubes to withstand bending stress isonly useful in exceptional cases e.g.in the case of lighting, exhibits, merchan-dise holders in shopfittings, see guidetables and has to be specially checkedfirst.
Statik Belastung der Raumfachwerke
Statics Carrying Capacity of SpaceframesLastverteilung und Spannweite.
Load Distribution and Span. The load burden on a spaceframeusually consists of its dead weight andthe so-called working load.
Gleichmig verteilte Last ist gnstiger z.B.: 25 x 20 kp = 500 kp
Evenly distributed load is more favourable e.g. 25 x 20 kp = 500 kp
Load in the centre = only 1/4 of the possible load, e.g.: 125 kp
The tubes in the spaceframe are only loaded by tensile and pressure forces.

In addition to depth of constructionand load distribution, the position of thebearings is important for the possiblefree span of the space frame. The same position may be assumed forsuspensions. The ideal form is a 4-sided bearing, i.e.each point of the circumferential edgechords is supported or suspended. This means that the framework trussesare bearing load in two directions. The possible free span or thepermissible load in this example isrelatively high, and also the maximum.
Auflager-Situation
Types of Bearings
Vierseitige Auflagerung
four-sided bearing
Dreiseitige Auflagerung
three-sided bearing
A less favourable version is a bearingon three sides, where there is only oneload-bearing direction, thus reducingthe achievable free span.

Further Types of Bearings:

It is virtually impossible to cover allpossible varieties. The guide values givenin the following tables contain only themost common types of bearings withcorresponding safety factors, so that asa rule other types of bearings can alsobe checked. In individual cases re-calculation canbe carried out.
The above comments andrecommendations are not meant toreplace a stress analysis, and are onlyapplicable to the parts and structureslisted in the MEROFORM catalogues.Supporting structures or open-airconstructions require staticcomputation and must correspond tothe rules of the MERO method ofconstruction, i.e. official approval.

Mastknoten"Mast" Node
Framework Supportscan be regarded as the ideal construction. They can absorb both vertical loads andlateral shearing forces. Furthermore, theycan be assembled from modular systemcomponents, therefore a specialconstruction is not required.
Care should be taken "Mast" nodes areinserted, where surface diagonal andspace diagonal have to be connected toa nodal point.
The diagonal reinforcement can bereplaced by a rigidly inserted, sturdypanel element (use as advertising orinfomation surface).

The Fixed Support absorbs both verticalloads and lateral shearing forces. Thesupports can be fixed either in the floor(foundation) or in the spaceframe.
The fixed support for MEROFORMspaceframes mainly consists of a circulartube, foot plate, MERO connection M12and connecting pieces for inserted tubes.
The following dimensions are importantfor the construction, see page 25:
Height of support HS in mm determines the dimension from upper edge of floor to axis dimension of the top chord node. Construction depth of the spaceframe RFW h. Length of inserted tubes LE2 in bottom chord UG. Support diametre SW 76.
