Plans for the Appalachian Ministry Network 2019 Royal Rangers Pow-Wow have been

finalized. Pow-wow will be held at the Raleigh County 4-H Camp in Daniels, WV 25832 from June 20-23, 2019. We wanted to get this information out as soon as possible to provide the opportunity to have one the best Network Pow-wows ever for the boys to experience.

Our Pow-wow theme is "Medieval Times". Pow-wow participants will enjoy many Medieval game and competition style activities. We want to encourage each outpost to develop a medieval "feel" to your outpost and campsite. We are inviting boys and commanders to come up with a medieval theme and come to Pow-Wow dressed up in medieval apparel. It would be so awesome to see other knights, squires and jesters traveling throughout the campsites during Pow-wow, heraldry flags flying, celtic music playing, and draw bridge entrances to campsites (for just a few examples). My understanding is that "Sir Eats-A-Lot" is scheduled for a re-appearance at our Pow-wow.

We will also have a "build your own costume" competition day on Friday. We are asking that each outpost bring cardboard, duct tape, spray paint, and other materials for making swords, helmets, and shields.

Camping at Pow-wow will be by outpost and in tents. Provision and preparation of meals will be the responsibility of each outpost. If your outpost would like to have a staff member visit your campsite to fellowship with your boys and leaders, please prepare for one extra person to feed. (You can let staff know at registration if you are prepared). At least one district staff member will be available to visit at each meal time. We would love to spend some one on one time with you and your outpost. We will provide more details at the Pow-wow for picking up your staff member for the meals (location, time, etc.). A medieval style meal invitation would be appreciated by each staff member as a keepsake from this Pow-wow.

Ground fires are not permitted in camp sites. Outposts will only be allowed to have above-ground fire pits. Also, we appreciate families bonding, but ladies are not permitted in the campsite area after council fire. However, they are welcome to help out during the day and to attend the awards ceremony on Saturday.

1) Get your actors together, read over the script, and ask for suggestions from everyone in the Outpost.

2) Rehearse carefully using any sound

effects or music – it will pay off. 3) Train your actors to speak up and to

pronounce all consonants not slurring them. Speak to the back row!

4) Keep it moving – no stage waits. 5) Over exaggerate the oddities of any

characters – you can’t be too “corny”. 6) Use all tools at your disposal – sound

effects, costumes, music, lighting, etc. Use your outpost ingenuity and be as professional as you can.

1) Prepare fire area and build fire using proper fire safety techniques. Ground fires are not permitted in camp sites. 2) Maintain fire during meal and clean up. 3) Get out stove and prepare it for cooking if needed. 4) Extinguish fire when meal is over , or have it tended until it is completely out. Bring water to a boil in a large pot. Add small amount of cooking oil. Add spaghetti - stirring occasionally ( cook for about 8 minutes) Carefully drain water. The colder and wetter the ground is, the more it will steal heat away from your Dutch oven. To avoid heating the ground instead of your food, place a fireproof barrier between the ground and your bottom coals. I like to use a cast iron griddle for this; old cookie sheets work too. &

Turn It Rotate the oven throughout the cooking time so everything cooks evenly. ¼ turn for the bottom (say clockwise) then ¼ turn in the opposite direction for the lid (this would be counterclockwise.) I like using a lid-lifter for this process but you can also use heat-resistant gloves or another favorite flameproof tool. &

Camp Cooking Dutch Oven 350 Degree Easy Rule Of Thumb Lots of recipes are cooked at a standard temperature of 350 degrees. So, if you don’t have a temperature chart with you at your campsite, here is an easy rule of thumb that will help you achieve that temperature. Take the size of your Dutch oven in inches and multiply by 2 to get the total number of coals for cooking; then for the coal placement, set 1/3 of the coals under the oven and 2/3 of the coals on the top of the oven lid.

If you don’t need to maintain a specific temperature, you can just “heat the oven” and cook. When you do this you can use the “Plus 4 and Minus 4 Rule of Thumb” which means you take the size of your Dutch oven in inches and add 4 to get the number of coals for the top of your oven (Example: A 12” Dutch oven + 4 = 16 coals on top of the oven) and subtract 4 to get the number of coals for the bottom of your oven (Example: A 12” Dutch oven – 4 = 8 coals on bottom of the oven. A total of 24 coals are needed for a 12” Dutch oven).

Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place for who retrieves their part first.

If more than 4 outpost attend, instructions for all 4 parts will be posted for anyone who is willing to participate.
