Members of the Leadership team travelled to Halifax last week to participate in WE Day events. This provided them with an opportunity to hear the message about giving back and making a difference in the community and the world. The leadership students have been busy planning our first student social of the year, which will be held this Thursday, December 7th from 6:30-8:30pm! The theme is the SnowBALL with DJ services provided by the one and only Mr. Trainor and Music Express! Along with the dance, there will be other activities including a ping pong tournament, sports activities in the gym, karaoke in the music room, a photo booth and MORE! There will also be festive treats available for purchase! The cost to get into the dance is only $5 and tickets to the extra activities are 25 cents each. Some activities require two tickets. Please promote with your students! If you would like to assist with supervision for this event please sign up for either shift on the Google doc provided. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yiKwo6XyqGzcJXIu4JR90Yc4pMCt0RZ3Rb2y2Wn9K10/edit?usp=sharing School Goals Committee: Our school continues to meet and plan with Department of Education personnel and internally about the Provincial Assessment results of our students, and develop our overall plan for the improvement of student results. Homes study and reading suggestions: A frequent message at Parent-teacher conferences was “he/she doesn’t seem to have much homework.” There may not be books and assignments every night, but there can be Home study. Students should take some time in the evenings to review notes, do a few math problems on the topics that were covered in class, re-read any reading done in class, quickly review/revise any written work. A mere 15-30 minutes of Home study or “Daily review” has been proven to increase student performance and grades, up to 5% in the span of a school year (CAP Journal, Winter 2015) It is a valuable asset to Student reading improvements to listen to your child read aloud, and model reading for them. They read a paragraph to their parent, then the parent reads to them. This mere commitment, less time than a Netflix episode, can go a long way to improving results and student self-esteem and self confidence. In the area of math, our school data from the province indicates, a large number of students are struggling with basic math facts. It is worthwhile to practice the basic addition and subtraction facts along with memorizing those TIMES TABLES! Parent-teacher conferences Thanks to our parent and guardian community for coming to meet with your child’s teacher during Parent-Teacher conferences. It is great to make those connections and have a conversation about how the year is going. We had a attendance rate of 70%. It was an amazing night of music, and the students should all be very proud of their efforts!

A special thank you is also extended to the grade 9 band students for their participation in the Remembrance Day assembly on November 10th. Music is an important part of services such as this, and the Grade 9 Band’s contribution to the assembly was appreciated by all in attendance. Congratulations to Callie Trainor and Grace Arbing on their excellent performance of the Last Post, and thank you to Allison Bourque for performing her original song so beautifully during the assembly. Congratulations to all band students on a very successful fall fundraising campaign! The participation rate was very high, and students (and parents!) were able to raise funds which will allow us to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities throughout the year. A special thank you to the parents and grade 9 students who volunteered to take orders and help with the cookie dough distribution! Please note that our annual Holiday Concert will be held on Thursday, December 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Stonepark gym. Grade 7, 8, and 9 Concert Bands and the Jazz Band will perform. All proceeds from this concert will be donated to assist families in need during the holiday season. Grade 9 French Trip will happen the February 5-9th. It will see the grade French Immersion classes travel to Quebec City and Ottawa, to experience french culture, language, as well as tour many of the national landmarks and historic sites, while continuing to develop their level of french language. This is an expensive trip and students have been doing many fundraisers, such as: fry-days, bake sales, cake auction, and selling Christmas Trees. The final cost will be released soon. Students will be needing lots of winter gear for their travels, skates for the canal, bike or hockey helmet for skating and tubing hills, winter jackets, headgear, mitts, boots for walking tours. Maybe some gift cards for shopping excursions. If you are thinking on some Christmas gifts for that grade 9 traveller.

Happy Holiday Season to each of you! Whether it be Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or another holiday

that you and your family celebrate. Please enjoy that time with family and friends.
