In our fast paced modern American culture the season of Advent seems out of place. As the money saving deals of Black Friday and Cyber Monday are seen as increasingly important in our consumer consciousness the Sundays of Advent marked by the lighting of candles on a wreath, have almost fallen completely off of our radar. We Catholics are not immune to the power that consumerism has in shaping our thoughts and actions. That is why it is more important than ever to keep up the practice of daily prayer and reflection through this holy season. If you haven’t put an Advent wreath together it is not too late. The Little Blue Books were given out to help you to pray and reflect each day, if you have not used it yet, start today, it is not too late to begin. I encourage you not to forget about Advent. Of all the things you need to do in preparation for Christmas, preparing your heart and mind to receive Christ should be at the top of the list. Blessings, Dan

Second Sunday of Advent

Our readings from Holy Scripture on this Second Sunday of Advent remind us of what we are supposed to be doing during Advent, in fact throughout our lives. The reading from Isaiah anticipates the coming of Christ and John the Baptist as it proclaims “… prepare the way of the Lord.” This is a time of preparation for us. That message is repeated in our Gospel from St. Mark. Today’s Gospel is the absolute beginning of Mark’s Gospel and it immediately gives us that same signal by declaring, “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” Of course, we all realize that the path to the Lord may not always be straight for us, but now is a time to correct that. God is waiting for us. St. Peter in his Second Letter, from which our Second Reading is drawn, indicates that God, however, “is patient with you.” You might say on this Second Sunday of Advent that the Lord is giving us a second chance to respond to His call. One of the basics of St. John the Baptist’s messages was that we need to get ourselves right with the Lord, perhaps turn our lives in a different direction. We can change; now is the time to do that. Pope St. John XXIII once stated during a homily in Advent, “We are all part of an immense family. This is proven by what is in our hearts during Advent and Christmas.” Now is the time to put love in our hearts and to truly prepare the way of the Lord. ~The Catholic Steward

Living Our Light in the Everyday

Watching commercials I was struck on how there are gadgets now where I don’t have to physically clean (vacuum), or think (Siri find me…) or even spatially aware (cars that park themselves). I began to think that there are things that hopefully they will not design a gadget for. Personal prayer and reception of Communion are two that come to mind.

During this Advent season, I believe we are called to put down, put away, or even walk away from all those things that are supposed to make our lives easier. I don’t think I have any more time because of what gadgets do for me. I don’t think I even spend extra time on leisurely activities. The light (Christ) reminds me that all good things take personal engagement. Relationships are built on real face time and doing activities together. I can’t tell you the countless dishes I have washed and wiped with important people in my life. Heck, my husband and I first met at a parish festival washing, wiping and putting away dishes for eight hours! There is something to be said about basics. I will admit I’m not keen on parallel parking, but I know when I figure out the challenge there is a satisfaction that can’t be matched by a car doing the thinking and driving for me. Or even having someone else exercise for me, but then the benefits would not be the same. My point is that Jesus is our light. Living that light in the everyday means just that, living with all the messiness and work; but doing it together in community. It means we have to do! No one or no gadget can do it for us! Reminder this week: How are you living your light in the everyday?

traditions, who originate from about thirty countries across the world. It

was founded in 1940 by Brother Roger Schütz Reformed Protestant. Our

Catholic Basics Round 2 When: December 17 @ 11:15 AM to Noon in the Church Hall Meeting Room The topic will be the Bible. This is a discussion on the Bible, how to use it, and questions people may have. You can come and listen, or if you have questions ask. If you want to submit your questions on the bible prior to the meeting, please email [email protected]. All are welcome! If you are a bible expert, come and share your knowledge as well.
