Volunteers in Play

‘Volunteers in Play’ is an introduction to play and playwork that is suitable for volunteers, those thinking of volunteering, employees and even parents working with children and young people from 2 to 16 years. This course provides inspiration and ideas for supporting freely chosen play in a range of play settings.

The two-day course will include a range of practical ideas and suggestions to enhance learning.

It is endorsed by Skills Active and Gloucester University and is worth 5 CPD Points.

This course is free

Thinking About Play: Play in a Strategic Context

This information workshop is targeted at professionals, managers and councillors. We will examine the importance of play and it’s cross cutting nature. Whether you work in Housing, Transport, Education or somewhere else entirely you have a role to play in regards to children’s play. This workshop will highlight how you can contribute to increasing the opportunity for children and young people to play across Conwy.

This course is free.

Implementing Risk Benefit Assessment in your Setting

Exploring Playwork Theory

This course will introduce and examine current playwork thinking and theory. It will challenge learners to reflect on their own practice by introducing a range of playwork concepts that will, more often than not, provide more questions than answers. This course will inspire learners and provide a greater understanding of children’s play.

Practical Playwork: Fires, Dens and Ropes

We will look at simple practical skills that support building play structures in the outdoor environment including, rope courses, tightropes, tree swings and den building. We will also explore ways of incorporating fire both for cooking and exploration – this will include learners cooking their lunch on the fire. Finally, we will discuss how to balance the risks and benefits of these types of play opportunities in order to provide children with opportunities for self-directed play.

This course will be of a practical nature and much of the course will be delivered outdoors – you WILL be expected to PLAY whatever the weather!!

Doing your homework

All children and young people need to play. The impulse to play is innate. Play is a biological, psychological and social necessity, and is fundamental to the healthy development and well being of individuals and communities.

Play is a process that is freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated. That is, children and young people determine and control the content and intent of their play, by following their own instincts, ideas and interests, in their own way for their own reasons.

The prime focus and essence of playwork is to support and facilitate the play process and this should inform the development of play policy, strategy, training and education.

For playworkers, the play process takes precedence and playworkers act as advocates for play when engaging with adult led agendas. The role of the playworker is to support all children and young people in the creation of a space in which they can play. The playworker's response to children and young people playing is based on a sound up to date knowledge of the play process, and reflective practice. Playworkers recognise their own impact on the play space and also the impact of children and young people's play on the playworker.

Playworkers choose an intervention style that enables children and young people to extend their play. All playworker intervention must balance risk with the developmental benefit and well being of children.

Learners will take an in depth look at article 31 that states that all children have a right to play. The topics covered will empower learners to translate this to children and young people they work with and ensure that they have an understanding of their rights.

Practical Playwork: Playing with the Outside Inside

This course will allow learners to consider practical ways to incorporate the natural/ outdoor environment into an indoor environment for children’s play. Learners will discuss and examine the importance of natural elements within children’s play. We will provide plenty of practical tips to ensuring that your play environment is rich and varied for children’s play even if your setting has limited space.
