Summer Reading Program

Dear Parent or Guardian,

We have made incredible progress this school year. Thank you for your invaluable support and partnership, which helps to ensure that your child and all of our students succeed inside and outside of the classroom. The Scholastic Unified School District is pleased to give each child a summer reading take-home pack to motivate students to read this summer. Each pack includes engaging books, reading and writing activities, and tips to help you make the most of summer reading opportunities.

Ongoing practice throughout the summer will help your child gain the necessary skills to flourish in school. The book packs will give you an opportunity to spend quality time with your child while also strengthening his or her reading comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking and conversational skills. The goals of our summer reading take-home program are simple:

• Encourage students to become lifelong readers • Teach students how to think critically about what they’re reading • Connect students and families with local libraries, book stores, and

community organizations • Expose students to different types of authors and characters • Help students develop reading and writing skills through different types

of reading experiences

Research proves that families play an important role in building and maintaining reading skills, especially over the summer months. On behalf of the Scholastic Unified School District, we hope that you and your family have a restful summer and embrace the joy and power of reading.

Sincerely,

Dr. Cristina Dunn Superintendent of School, Scholastic Unified School District

Research indicates that self-selected reading is twice as powerful as teacher-selected reading in developing motivation and comprehension.1 Give your students the option to choose books that match their personal interests via our student self-select online or onsite options.

Since 2010, Lexington County School District in South Carolina has partnered with Scholastic to bridge the home to school connection gap. The district provides every child with the resources to own a book (or two) during the summer, and every parent with the steps to create quality time through reading.

Recognizing that all communities are unique in their own way, schools have partnered with Scholastic to customize their summer reading programs to fit the needs, interests, and themes of the students and parents they serve.

After trying the customization method, Gilbert Primary School decided to migrate to the self-selection model. This approach allowed for the child, with guidance from a specialist, to browse through the books and decide which authentic Scholastic titles sparked their interests. Both students and parents appreciated this method the most, and as praise for the program spread through the community, the school added self-selection distributions for the winter and spring breaks.

Lexington Schools “FACE” Literacy Needs in the Summer and Beyond

Book Customization At Saxe Gotha Elementary School, pre-made packets were designed to match the reading levels of the students. The managers of the distribution process implemented input from those who knew the children’s reading habits better than anyone else—their teachers. Because of that diligence, every child received a desirable book matching his or her literacy level and reading interests.

Family Engagement Red Bank Elementary promoted the program through a family night with book giveaways, popcorn, and a pajama party. This event turned out to be a huge success with a unsurpassed turnout of parents and children.

Forts Pond Elementary hosted a literacy workshop for grades 3–5. Parents were given tips for promoting literacy at home while their children engaged in literacy activities nearby. At the end of the workshop parents and their children selected a take-home book together, reinforcing the role of the parents as partners in their children’s literacy journey.
