PROGRAM GOALS

Exploring social justice and activism in a diverse global city.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Students participate in the Arcadia in London program but have a core course designed for them that aligns with Earlham’s Quaker identity and mission. Earlham has control over the application and acceptance process while students have access to the courses, facilities, and support offered by the Arcadia in London program and staff.

Earlham in London

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

» All Earlham students take the Global Change Field Practicum. In this course students work closely with an NGO to learn their business practices. At the end of the course, they present on how the client might solve a specific real life problem or risk confronting their organization.

Jennifer Lewis, Associate Director of the Center for Global

Education, Earlham College

Our students and faculty leader consistently described the Arcadia faculty and

staff members as extraordinarily competent, professional, supportive, and helpful. The London Center’s faculty and staff undoubtedly enhanced

our students’ overall program experience. One example of a staff member going above and

beyond (among many) is that during my site visit, we had two guest speakers who were

scheduled to meet with our group on a Saturday morning. A staff member offered to come in on her day off to open the Center for us, she

attended the session with our group, and she even joined the speakers, faculty leader and

me for lunch afterward.”

FEEDBACK

ARCADIA’S CONTRIBUTIONS

» Students enroll in three courses from the Arcadia in London course selections. Each course uses the city of London as its classroom by bringing the students out into London for field excursions such as a visit to Parliament or the BBC headquarters.

» Students are housed with other Arcadia in London program participants, creating a community of students going through similar experiences.

» Access to co-curricular programs in London such as a Wales Adventure Weekend, a rugby match or day trip to Brighton.

» Students work with a Program Manager prior to departure for predeparture support.

» Earlham specific website enabling strong promotion and easy access to details on all devices.

PROGRAM GOALS

Participants gain a strong understanding of communications practices in nonprofit organizations in Cape Town through active engagement with local non-profits and advertising agencies. Students develop communication campaigns with their assigned non-profit, providing a gateway to academic success, self-discovery, critical thinking and collaborative learning.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Participants gain an understanding of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and other forms of diversity in domestic society and how this understanding impacts mass communications. The course also examines the significance and impact of mass communications in a global society, with diverse populations and cultures. Students develop marketing communication campaigns for non-profits in the area, including orphanages, women’s shelters, recycling firms and other groups working in the townships. Students learn about the range of audiences in South Africa and reflect on the corresponding U.S. context.

FEEDBACK

Arcadia played a major role in program development. I had a general idea of what I wanted to

do and what my students’ needs would be with regard to understanding the culture of the area, but the Arcadia on-site staff helped tremendously in fleshing that out.

I had a good idea of my desired student learning outcomes, and Arcadia helped to make sure those would be achieved. Because of their local knowledge, Arcadia

was able to identify appropriate non-profits for us to work with in the townships around Cape Town as well as recommending a wide variety of cultural experiences to help my students get a good understanding of the area

and particularly historical and diversity issues.

PROGRAM GOALS

To compare and contrast the challenges facing women scientists in the U.S. vs. Europe and to examine in depth, the potential causes of the attrition of women in a variety of scientific fields. This is achieved by listening to women scientists and organizations which promote women in scientific fields.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The curriculum is driven by faculty from two departments within the University of Kentucky: Neuroscience and Gender Studies. They focus on the contribution of women in science from both angles, and Arcadia brings an international perspective to the learning. By tapping into its network in London, Arcadia located experts from overseas to teach the students and expand the discussion beyond U.S. viewpoints.

This approach also brings the discussion out of the classroom so students learn through experience and see the practical implementation of some theories discussed. In addition, Arcadia’s approach broadens the study to include aspects of British culture, history and community.

DISCIPLINE AREA

Since the 2014-2015 academic year, Arcadia University’s College of Global Studies has customized nine faculty-directed programs for the University of Kentucky.

Beyond arranging the basic logistics of these programs (housing, transportation, etc.), Arcadia’s custom program

managers have used their knowledge and expertise to connect our faculty members with academic excursions, site visits and internships which were both relevant and

culturally informative to the course(s) being offered. Their strong support of our faculty members both before arrival and in-country, as well as their ability to work within the

parameters of our University’s curricular needs (classroom time, guest lectures, etc.), have made them an invaluable

partner in our continuing effort to provide quality education abroad programming to our students. We look

forward to working with them for many more years to come.”

Ben Vockery, Faculty Directed Programs Co-ordinator, University of Kentucky

PROGRAM GOALS

This program is designed specifically for incoming ODU freshmen, and allows freshmen students to enroll in a short-term summer study abroad program before starting classes in Norfolk. The program begins with several days of orientation and activities at ODU. The group then travels together from Norfolk to Athens. Coursework in Art History, Archaeology and Geology satisfy general education requirements that all ODU students must fulfill.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The two required courses allow students to explore the landscape that inspired Homer’s Odyssey, ranging from archaeological sites to extinct volcanoes. The Greece and the Visual Arts course introduces the various media, techniques, styles, content and contexts in the visual arts as they are manifested in the world’s cultures. Special emphasis is placed on the art and archaeology of ancient Greece and the development of the classical tradition. The Experiencing Geology in Greece course introduces students to Earth Science, which emphasizes the materials and processes that shape landforms and influences the environment. Special emphasis is placed on the materials, landforms and environments found in Greece.
