TEACHERS PAID UNION MEETING: Cust School staff will attend their second NZEI paid union meeting on the afternoon of June 21st. The school instruction programmes will end at 12:30pm. The bus will run at this time. This year the NZEI (The Primary and Early Childhood Workers Union) has called two paid union meetings across the country. This is more than we have had in recent years and reflects the degree of importance placed on this years negotiated award settlement. A previous Press editorial presents the case very persuasively. "Teachers, along with other public sector employees, have been holding their collective breath for years and now they and the wider education system merit a serious injection of oxygen." From the education sectors point of view there are two main issues.... 1) Time to teach, time to lead: Teachers and principals are facing immense pressure thanks to enormous workloads and more responsibilities without any additional staffing or time. There aren't enough resources available for supporting children with additional learning needs. 2) Fixing the teacher shortage crisis: Schools are struggling to attract and retain great teachers. There is also a drop in the number of people choosing to train as teachers. As school staff, we are mindful of the disruption these meetings can cause. We have again agonised as to how we might juggle classes, teachers and students. However, in the end, the wider teaching profession is strongly in support of this year’s campaign and there is no way there are enough relief teachers in North Canterbury to keep the school operational for an afternoon. We thank you in advance for your support. The better the conditions are for teachers, the better the learning environment for all children. (Any parent unable to make alternative arrangements for children on this afternoon, please contact the school office. We have the capacity to manage and monitor a small group of children in the school multipurpose room.) Finally, here is a link to an article regarding education you might find interesting. Some interesting thoughts around education bandwagons and the place of knowledge in learning.

ROOM ONE We welcome Amelia Jackson, Sonora Taylor and Mackenzie Taylor who began their pre-school visits this week. This week we have been focusing on what makes a good friend and how we can be a good friend to others. Next week we will be completing some activities around the four seasons. In Maths the groups have been working on numbers from 1-10, numbers from 10-20, addition and subtraction to 10 using equipment and counting in 2’s to 20. Next week we will starting a unit on position. This is a helpful website if you were looking for ways to help your child at home: https://parents.education.govt.nz/primary-school/learning-and-development-at-home/ideas-to-help-with-reading-writing-and-maths/ Enjoy your weekend, Margaret and Kennys ROOM TWO AND ROOM FOUR Kia Ora,

After a short week post Queens’s Birthday we have been busy getting back into our normal programme. Hopefully you will have been informed that the week 6 spelling test is to be held this Friday, and then back to the usual format next week.

We have also had Mr Canton teaching full time in Room 2 the past few days, including taking a great art unit. Pop in and see the awesome fruit bowls on display! Next artwork is going to be using a variety of mixed media.

We are also currently on full ‘Golden Ticket alert’ in Room 2 – who will get the last tickets?? Together with our class reading and completing a novel study on this wonderful book, we are very ‘chocolate focused’ at the moment.

In Room 4 this week we have continued with our normal programme. In numeracy the children have been working on addition, subtraction and multiplication skills. Mrs Falconer’s group has been focusing on subtraction and renaming. Mr Foskett’s group has been recapping multiplication and have been multiplying four digits by a single number.

In Mr F’s boys writing group we have been working on expanding the children’s ideas. The children have been writing about being stranded on a desert island. Over the weekend they will be bringing their books home. The children would really like to share some of their stories with you.

ROOM THREE Kia ora Parents/Caregivers Room 3 have finally started the topic on houses and plenty of exciting things are planned for the class including the Cust Village walk, building cardboard box houses and a visit from a builder. Knowledge from topic has also been transferred into their writing where the students have produced some beautiful descriptive writing about their houses. We have also started strand math on shape to coincide with topic, as the students look at the shapes present in houses. The students have now settled in to their new phonics routine and the quality of their work has shown a marked improvement. The Cust Village walk had to be cancelled due to the poor weather conditions on Wednesday and has been rescheduled to Monday 18 June. Again, if you could please remember to pack a raincoat for your child that would be great. Have a great weekend. Nga mihi James ROOM FIVE We have completed our mid-year assessment this week which has given us a chance to get started on a new topic. The class are currently choosing and beginning to research an inspirational person who has changed the world or been through a major change. This goes with our theme this year of ‘Change’. They will have until the end of the term to research information to share with the class on their chosen person including providing reasons on why they have chosen the person. In writing, we have continued with our poetry unit. This week we have been working on haiku. Here are some haikus to enjoy! Autumn Silent, slow and white Falling, dying, crispy leaves. Clouds all different sizes Crunching under each footstep taken. Floating in the sky Trees now all bare…Winter. By Lisa By Emily Emily Fun and determined Is very amazing too She will make you smile By Keirra

Regards Hannah ROOM SIX AND ROOM SEVEN Kia ora koutou Recently in Room 6 and 7, we have been developing our critical thinking skills, focusing on advertising. We have learned about colour psychology, and the way advertisements exploit stereotypes and our insecurities in an effort to sell a product or service. Last week, we paired up with a classmate and were given a random product type and a target audience that we had to design and market to. Some were pretty crazy combinations! We are using our geometry knowledge to create nets for packaging (trickier than it looks!) and are busy designing logos using pen, paper, paint, digital tools, and what we know about creating graphic impact.

In Mathematics we are busy studying 'Fractions, Decimals and Percentages'. This will be our focus through into next term. The students are clearly keen to gain greater knowledge and understanding in these concepts; great learning is happening in our senior room!. Keep up the great work Room 6 & 7!

With the inclement weather this week, our team of wet day monitors have been spending most of their lunch hours helping out in the junior classrooms. We would like to acknowledge and thank the following senior students for their leadership role. Blake P, Caleb, Emma Stephenson, Finn, James, Jodie, Katie, Libby, Lilly, Lucia, Maisie, Max, Olivia and Ribh. It takes a huge amount of patience, tolerance empathy and creativity when you are assisting supervising a classroom of younger pupils 'confined to barracks' day after day! Thank you monitors, your efforts are very much appreciated by the children you work with, and the classroom teachers.

Have a happy weekend. Miriam, Annmaree and Robert

Get ready for flu season – protect your whānau and community

Colder weather also brings along a nasty passenger – the flu.

As you may have seen in the media, it’s been a terrible flu season in the Northern Hemisphere, which is a possible

predictor for what we may see here.

Families in the Hurunui and Kaikōura districts can once again ensure their children have the best protection available

against the flu this winter – and it won't cost a cent! Young people from six months to 17 years of age living in the

Kaikōura and Hurunui areas (within the Canterbury District Health Board) can receive free flu shots.

Influenza infection rates are generally highest in children and healthy children are the major cause of the spread of the

virus in the community. Around 80 percent of people infected show no or minimal symptoms so you can spread the flu

bug without knowing you have it – and the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions are

particularly vulnerable.

Canterbury District Health Board is urging you to protect your whānau and the wider community by getting your flu

shot as soon as possible. This year’s vaccines have been specially formulated for New Zealand and are expected to

offer protection against the strain that was circulating in the Northern Hemisphere.

While flu shots are free for under 18s, they’re available for anyone for a fee from a doctor, nurse or some pharmacists.

You or your whānau may qualify for a free shot as well – check out www.flufree.co.nz for more info and flu facts.

FREE DENTAL CARE FOR CHILDREN - INCLUDING SPECIAL INFORMATION REGARDING YEAR 8 STUDENTS One of our Community Dental Service preventive mobiles will be visiting your school soon.

We will be aiming to see that all school age children enrolled with the Community Dental Service have their dental check-up in the dental mobile while it is there

Year 8 students: all year 8 students enrolled with the Community Dental Service are transferred from the Community Dental Service to a FREE private dentist from year 9 until their 18th birthday. To help with this transition please ensure you have informed your child of their family dentist (not orthodontist). This will enable us to transfer your child onto the correct dentist for year 9 onwards. More information will be sent home after their year 8 check-up.

To do this we will be asking the school to provide your child’s name, address and your contact information.

The dental therapist will not only be checking the children’s teeth but will also Xray, clean, and apply protective treatments fluoride and or Fissure sealants (coating put on teeth to prevent decay) if required

If your child requires further dental care such as fillings they will bring home a ‘Care Plan’ which will explain what dental care and appointment times are required

When you receive the ‘Care Plan’ please contact our Call Centre as soon as possible as you will need to arrange a time to bring your child to one of our Community Clinics for this dental care

Please let us know ASAP if you do not wish your child to have any of this care, you can talk to the staff in the mobile or phone/email our Call Centre

If you wish to be present at your child’s check up this will need to take place at our community clinic so please phone/email our Call Centre to make an appointment

Please contact our Call Centre if you want further information on the Community Dental Service, to enrol your child or if you have any specific questions about your child’s dental care (a dental therapist will call you back)

To contact our Call Centre: phone 0800 846 983 / email [email protected]
