Classroom Teaching
Co-Director, Scholarly Concentration Medical School Course (Required of all Medical
Students), Public Health and Community Service (2008 – present)
The Scholarly Concentration (SC) program provides medical students with faculty-mentored scholarly
experiences in areas of individual interest. This required component of the MD curriculum provides the
infrastructure and mentoring necessary for students to produce a scholarly project, and encourages the
acquisition of attitudes and skills for self-directed, lifelong learning and scholarship. Dr. Friedman
helped design the curriculum and actively mentors around 15 medical students each year guiding them in
all steps of designing and conducting a scholarly investigation.
Course Objectives: The objective of the SC program is to promote intellectual curiosity,
appreciation of scholarly inquiry, flexibility, passion for discovery, self-reflection, openness,
independence, and acceptance of one’s own limitations. Students use critical thinking,
independent and group work, observational skills, and written and oral presentation to achieve
these objectives. Throughout the process, each student receives feedback from faculty and other
students.
