Design and Technology Curriculum – KS3 Overview (done on a class rotation basis throughout the year) Subject Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 FOOD Healthy Eating – theory based on health and safety in
the kitchen, Eatwell Guide and 5 a day. Practical work to include group soup activity, individual practical work - salad, filled baked potatoes, healthy snack and drink. Basic skills – theory based on using the cooker/baked products. Practical work - Scones and apple crumble (rubbing in method)
Basic skills - theory based on cooking/baking methods, ingredients and standard components. Practical work to include – fruit muffins, fruit and cinnamon swirls, pizza, pasta bake, and soup.
Food markets/street food – research based on street food around the world, food (farmers) markets. Theory based on macro and micro nutrients. Practical work – wraps and wedges with dips, stir fry, spaghetti bolognese, pies/ pasties, cup cakes.
GRAPHICS Theory based on new course key words. Pop-up card, to include initial modelling, development model and final product. Focus on collage (use of various papers/cards and hand drawing skills/coloured pencil. Envelope. Theory about different types of paper/card. Simple slot together decoration using given template for half. Use of 2D Design, Photoshop and construction skills.
Theory based on new course key words. Look at colour and composition in more detail. Use of mixed media (mainly wet and printing) to create a background for gift bag. Learn to scan, manipulate on Photoshop, add to gift bag and construct. Ext: to add silhouette images to gift bag and manipulate further. Theory re how gift bag would be printed in industry. Mini photo frame to fit in gift bag. 2D Design, initial template given, Photoshop and construction from thin foam board.
Information CD/DVD packaging based on a theme from a given selection.
PRODUCT DESIGN
Key ring project (current yr9 project) – Skills – ICT /CAD CAM – Art / graphic designers (listed from current Graphics course) research and analysis – Adding colour (9 hours with evaluation / make book review / test) Drawing skills from the current yr7 project – Orthographic – 1 / 2 point perspective – google sketch up – hook design (9 hours) 3d model of sketch house design.
Plastics project – Flower holder (9 hours) Drawing skill / Optical illusion: Typography development Collage / mark making skills Printing skills, using old toys / paper towels / bubble wrap (pupils bring in) (6 hours) Extra time for review / make booklets / tests Build a spinning optical illusion product, using dowel, foam board, coloured pens / pencils, glue (4 hours)
Shop front – Research skills – focusing on the following bullet points: Colour, Tone, Line, Composition, Typography, Imagery Designing of the shop front (collage work using mixed media) / making Development, Evaluation (15 hours) Drawing skills recap from year 7 – orthographic – isometric (3 hours)
TEXTILES Cushion project theory based on health and safety in the Textiles room. Research of existing products, design ideas, skills used, planning, evaluation. Practical work – learning to use sewing machine, making a cushion. DIY Skills – practical activity – sewing on a button, sewing a hem, turning a hem with wonderweb.
(16 hours and 2 hours)
Apron project – theory based on research of clothes and fabric for workwear, design brief, design ideas, skills used, planning, evaluation. Practical work – making an apron to include pocket and decoration. (18 hours)
Tie dye project – theory to include upcycling, tie dye methods, research, design ideas, planning, evaluation. Practical work – upcycled tie dyed tee shirt. Sock monkey project – practical work – a sock monkey or similar (9 hours each project)
