Programme Specific Outcomes

The major outcome of sociology is intended to serve as preparation for careers in

teaching, delivery and administration of social and health services, urban and

environmental studies, law, government service at local, state and central levels and

related occupations.

This programme applying theories functional explanation of social process known as-

functional theory. Solving the problems between workers and management-applying

conflict theory. Peoples understanding of leader and movement-leadership theory.

The students learnt the rationale behind the relevance of studying the research

methodology.

Developed skills to understand difference between physical and social sciences, social

Science Research methods particularly on Scientific Method to be followed.

The students are enabled to do Social Research independently from the selection of topic

to write the report.

Students become free lance researcher of national and international organization to

conduct research on any social problem.

Meaning and importance of research. Theory and research. Basic concepts - Facts, concepts and

variables. Hypotheses – Need, types and formulation. Types of research – Pure, Action, Applied,

Quantitative and Qualitative. Selection of research problem. Steps in research.

Unit II Research Design, Sampling and scaling techniques Research design:

Meaning. Types: Exploratory, Descriptive, Diagnostic, Experimental and Explanatory.

Sampling: Meaning, Universe, Types, Sample frame, Sample Size. Scaling techniques: Lickerts,

Guttman, Thurrstone, Bogardus and Socio metric.

Unit III Data Collection:

Methods: Observation, Interview, Case Study, Content Analysis and Narrative. Tools: Interview

Guide, Interview Schedule and Questionnaire.

Unit IV Analysis of Data:

Statistics: Meanings, Functions and Importance of Statistics in Social Sciences. Measures of

Central Tendency and Dispersion. Association: Chisquare, Association of Attributes, Gamma

test. T-test. Correlation: Rank Correlation and Karl Pearson Co-efficient of Correlation. Use of

computer in social research Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS).

Social issues of People‟s health are taught to the students. Systems of medicine like

Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Allopathy and Homeopathy are introduced with their history

and principles. Students have comparative picture of systems of medicine.

Indigenous systems of medicine are also placed in the form of folk medicine, home

remedy, yogic medicine and naturopathy.

Students understand the overlapping among the indigenous medicine. They also

contribute systems available in these local settings through group discussions.

The cultural background of the health care are identified. Various dimensions people‟s

understanding of health as peace in the mind, characters like smiling, angry, arrogance,

nature of sleep etc. are explained. Orientation of health in terms of fatalism and

rationalism which together opposing each other are discussed.

Group behavior based on caste and religious culture on items of food, eating habit, food

and gender are discussed. The medical believes of people are also pointed out.

The role of professionals in health care is to be properly understood. It is helpful for the

medical professionals and also for the patient‟s relationship. The co-operation,

adjustment and form of communication are informed.

The ethics in medical profession is explored through studying the role of doctors and

nurses in satisfying the patients and other clients. The accessibility and accountability of

the doctors and affordability of the medicine are discussed.

Sociology of health deals with the performance of the health planning. It also examines

the claims in the health programs, statistics on maternal and child health, qualitative

accept of human welfare are analyzed.
