Program of Study & course
content For Art 10 3 credits: As developed by Alberta Education, the
Art 10, 20, 30, and 35 courses at Austin
O’ Brien is based on three major
components of visual learning:
DRAWINGS or delineation…the way
we record information:
This component encompasses the
recording, investigating,
communicating, evaluating and
articulating aspects of making images.
COMPOSITIONS or
structures…ways in which images are put
together to create meaning:
The composition component deals with
the organization, contents and
relationships involved in the creation
of images.
ENCOUNTERS with visual art; how
we respond to visual images:
This components deals with personal
response to looking at images and
artifacts, and learning about art by
viewing major works from the
past…art history.
STUDENT RESOURCES:
The students will have access to a variety of art
books, video- presentations on artists and particular
areas in art history, in class demonstrations & one-
on-one instruction, most art media provided, possible
gallery visits, and local professional guest artists.
ASSESSMENT of student
Performance: Based on the Provincial
High School Art Curriculum, students are evaluated
on their ability to critically respond to the
objectives of each assignment and explore various
ways of expressing personal thoughts and
feelings through creative manipulation of
various art medium. And, how successful the
creative process relates to the 3 major components
above-Drawings, compositions, and encounters.
Cumulative Assessment: Each unit of study has various exercises
and projects that are marked
cumulatively. All marks will be cumulative;
within each category, the final grade is
determined by the combination of total

Your sketchbook is a visual commentary of your life, and all that your eyes perceive…Your mission is to let your eyes grab all that they can and send back the visions through your eyes only (NO ONE SEES THINGS EXACTLY THE WAY YOU DO…On your mark…get set….DRAW!!!

PORTFOLIO REVIEW This will take place at the end of the term. Everything will be handed in together for a final review; this will give the maturing Artist the opportunity do re-due any projects for
revaluation. There is no right and wrong in the visual world of Art- and the creative process- but sometimes the objectives and concepts are not met as successfully as they could be. Therefore, you
will be encouraged to do the best of your abilities. Creating ART is a gift from GOD and a Life-Long journey.
Introduction to the Sketchbook Unit:
Why and what are the reasons for the sketchbook?
Sketchbooks are an outlet, a workshop for manufacturing good art whether
poems or drawings or other - they provide a place for those sparks of
everyday inspiration to grow into a mature piece or whither into ever smaller
embers, smoky wisps of hazy memory. These synaptic records which make up the foundation
of your work are important, even essential to put down on paper.
For an artist or a writer these ideas are the life - blood of the creation process.
Sketchbooks, for most artists, are as necessary as the air you breathe. The artist inhales
life and exhales ideas. A sketchbook can provide an idea reservoir for future reference and
manipulation. Such insights are invaluable, yet they can come from everyday frustrations
like missed appointments or relationship issues.
Your daily life becomes your art. Badly conceived drawings, and written work, can make up
the skeleton of a newer, stronger work. Good work can become better through the harsh
mathematics of elimination and addition of idea. A pen stroke here… A brush stroke
there…let the Holy Spirit be your guide, as your art records your life.
In the past some people kept what they called a commonplace book. In it they put all sorts
of things which interested them: drawings, pieces of fabric, flowers and other natural
things, cuttings from magazines, pictures of places they had visited and even copies of
poems which they enjoyed. What you choose to call your book is not important; it is what is
in your book that matters. Now, let’s get started…
Things you may include in your sketchbook for your CHOICE pages: Please don’t be afraid to work with a variety of art mediums.
STILL-LIFE Drawings from observation, or Sketches from imagination and memory. Mechanical detailed drawing…for ex, ikea, Lego, appliance and car manual, medical…etc. PORTRAITS, Landscapes, Architecture… etc. Photography and manipulated work…half photo half drawing. Personal Experimentation with different media and combinations of media ARTIST PAGES: Visual Investigations on artist and art styles that inspire you. Found objects incorporated in drawing…Leaves, Fabric, stickers, collaging…etc. Graphic work that you create, for example: logos, tattoos, calligraphy, graffiti…etc. Digital artwork from computer program (please use a good coloured printer to print a
good hard copy to place in your sketchbook.
All IN CLASS sketchbook EXCERSIES.
The Rough Pages: Thumbnails and pre-planning for main projects. (Coloured thumbnail, and
notes and experimental pages of different art medium).
The ASSIGNED SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENTS accompanied with CHOICE PAGES.
(A list of these will be given to you at the beginning of the semester)
This is an example of the marking scheme (rubric) for the mid-term hand-ins and the FINAL sketchbook hand in which takes place at the end of the semester…Due dates for these will be posted in art room. Total marks /300
JUST a Final Note…Always be proud of your sketchbook and
don’t be afraid to show it to others. Showing your sketchbook
to others is a good way to received useful feedback to help
you refine and develop your artistic skill to a higher
level…showing your work to others can even give you more
confidence in yourself and your art abilities. No two
sketchbooks are the same…Every artist’s sketchbook is
different and unique, just like YOU…a beautiful creative work
of art!… When you look inside a sketchbook, you are looking
inside the artist’s mind…the artist’s soul…now that’s powerful
stuff!
