CUMMINS AG NEWS
Boxer Gold will con/nue to be an extremely effec/ve tool in 2017 for
control of grasses in our cereal crops. There are pending registra/ons for
one key component (prosulfocarb) as a stand-alone product. This will poten/ally have some effec/ve use
opportuni/es and give some flexibility to ac/ve ra/os applied to our crops. We will have both products available
(subject to registra/on) and be able to suggest the most cost-effec/ve plan for your crop in 2017. Please speak with
your agronomist or call the store to find out more.

CANOLA SEED
There are several new canola varie/es that are available
in 2017.
44T02, 44Y90 & 45Y91 from Pioneer and ATR Mako
from Nuseed, as well as DG560TT from new company
Dyna-Gro and TurbineTT from Seed Force are all new
varie/es that we have included in our trials this season.
Other varie/es that have con/nued to perform well in
our district include Banker, Diamond, 44Y89 and Hyola
650TT.
We have just finished reaping our canola trials for this
season, which provides good local data.
This season we included a /me of sowing trial to have a
beAer look at how different varie/es respond to earlier
sowing /mes.
Much like wheat, some varie/es are driven purely by
temperature and will start flowering earlier when sown
early. Other varie/es are able to adjust flowering /me
according to the amount of solar radia/on or day length.
As with every season, we have covering orders in place
to meet your canola seed requirements. Make sure you
catch up with your agronomist to discuss which canola
varie/es are performing well in our district, and what
your canola seed requirements will be for 2017.
We are accep-ng orders now, if you have an indica-on
of what you want, the sooner you can let us know the
be3er.

Improving your soil structure Things to consider prior to delving and spading on your
farm.
Changing soil structure through mechanically ripping /
delving and spading along with soil ameliorates
(gypsum/lime) has been growing in momentum over the
past few seasons.
The use of soil mapping (Radiometrics and EM) and yield
maps combined with the growers and agronomists
knowledge are iden/fying paddocks or areas within
paddocks with soil structural issues limi/ng yield.
There have been plenty of success stories and this
methodology is transforming some country. There have
also been mistakes made, however generally due to a
lack of prior research. Some of the soil structure or
chemical restraints that can create issues if not iden/fied
before ripping, delving or spading are:
• Low pH layers—these generally contain high levels of
free aluminium which is toxic to plant roots and limits
growth; this can be rec/fied easily with an applica/on
of lime.
• Sodic Clay—Sodic clays are dispersive, have poor
structure and limit water infiltra/on, an applica/on of
gypsum is required if this is an issue.
• Clay with high pH and free lime—This can cause
issues with a crop like lupins in areas where they
were previously successfully grown. This cannot be
rec/fied so an alterna/ve crop will need to be
planted.
• High Levels of Gravel in Profile—In some cases there
can be layers with over 80% gravel. In these cases you
may want to bring greater amounts of clay up
through the profile to help increase water and
nutrient holding capacity.
• Trace Elements—Although these generally are not
an issue, it is a great opportunity to incorporate these
highly immobile elements through the profile.
Before you start ripping up areas of you paddocks
think about this: your land is your most valuable
asset, it provides you with your livelihood. It makes
sense to do some research into the sub surface soil
zones to determine what is causing the produc-vity
issues and formulate a strategy to best rec-fy those
constraints.
With harvest in full swing and fire season underway,
have you reviewed your insurance covers recently to
ensure you are fully protected?
Items such as buildings & contents, fencing &
improvements, livestock, hay, machinery and vehicles
can change during the course of the year, so now is the
/me to review your policy to make sure it is up to date.
To review your policy and
ensure you are adequately
covered, call in to Cummins
Ag to see Ben Simpson or give
him a call on 0437 291 635.
Fire Season is here!
In this trial new and exis/ng wheat varie/es are
evaluated to ascertain their yield and quality in our
local environment. This gives addi/onal informa/on
to the Na/onal Variety Trials in different soil types
and areas, providing you the grower with an
excellent plaQorm to make informed decisions on
variety selec/on.
Wheat varie/es were sown using the plot seeder
with DBS tynes on 300mm spacing, in a randomised
block design. The site received fungicide applica/ons
to minimise leaf disease influences. Plots were
harvested for yield and grain quality is being
analysed.
Trojan (APW) is a mid to late maturity variety released from Longreach plant breeders. Trojan has shown
good yields in many trials over the past 2 seasons and par/cularly in /me of sowing trials conducted by
James Hunt (CSIRO). Trojan has topped the Yeelanna trial site in the last two seasons (2015 shared
honours with Emu Rock). It has reasonable disease resistance with good rust resistance and useful CCN
resistance levels. It has an MS ra/ng for powdery mildew and yellow leaf spot. Farmer to farmer trade is
allowed as long as paperwork is lodged with Pacific Seeds (form available online)
Scepter (AH) was released late in 2015 to much fanfare as the “new Mace”. It is derived largely from
Mace with many similar characteris/cs but improved grain yield (AGT say +7%) and beAer stripe rust
resistance. Scepter is suscep/ble to stripe rust early in the season but may show useful resistance later in
the season when the temperature warms up; it is provisionally rated MSS compared to Mace SVS.
Arrow (AH) was trialled as LPB11-1728 and has been released in September 2016. It has a shorter
canopy size similar to Wyalkatchem for easier management. Arrow is suitable for wheat on wheat
rota/on phase with MRMS Yellow Leaf Spot resistance similar to Scepter and Mace. It is rated MSS to
stripe rust, MRMS to stem rust and S to leaf rust.
A complimentary copy of our 2016 ‘Trial Results’ booklet containing a summary of our extensive R & D
work for 2016 will be given to our Agronomy Clients.
Below is some yield results from our Yeelanna variety trials. The results of these trials along with our
many other trials will be printed in our 2016 Trial Results Booklet.

Barley varie/es are evaluated to ascertain their
yield and quality in our local environment,
providing you the grower with an excellent
plaQorm to make informed decisions on variety
selec/on.
The site received 2 fungicide applica/ons to
minimise leaf disease influences. Plots were
harvested for yield, and grain quality is being
analysed.
The first considera/on when choosing malt barley
varie/es to grow on Eyre Peninsula is the ability to
deliver and market that grain as malt. Port Lincoln
is an export port, therefore malt varie/es have to
be of export quality malt, and this eliminates some
varie/es as a malt op/on. Another factor is
whether there will be delivery sites available on
Eyre Peninsula and where the segrega/ons might
be located. Ul/mately, this depends on tonnage of
the par/cular variety grown in your area and Eyre
Peninsula.
Spartacus (IGB1334T) is a
new imi-tolerant barley from
Intergrain, making it an
alterna/ve to Scope. It is a
short, early maturing barley
with a similar plant type to
Hindmarsh and Latrobe.
Spartacus also has a similar
disease resistance profile to
Hindmarsh including
resistance to CCN (Scope no
CCN). Spartacus is due to
complete malt accredita/on
in 2018. Spartacus has shown
significantly higher yields compared to Scope (or
Clearfield wheat op/ons), however it will have
reduced weed compe//on compared to Scope due
to its erect growth habit.
Compass is also awai/ng malt accredita/on for
2018. It is closely related to Commander and has a
similar growth habit but is very high yielding. It is
also earlier flowering, with beAer straw strength,
lodging resistance and net blotch resistance. It has
yielded near the top of our trials and NVTs since its
release.
Rosalind is a feed barley bred by Intergrain. It has
been to highest yielding barley na/onally in NVT for
2014 and 2015. Rosalind is mid maturing, later than
Latrobe but earlier than Buloke. It has good head
reten/on and straw strength. It has CCN resistance,
good NFNB and leaf rust but poor SFNB.
