MAYOR’S MESSAGE
We all have stories to tell, and a desire to hear stories that are different to our own. They may be stories from our past, or those of our ancestors. Cultural activities—be they dance, comedy, drama, music or another art form—give us the opportunity to share, interpret and witness the expression of what it is to be human.
This is why arts and cultural activities are important to our society. Our wealth of aboriginal and post-white settlement history and traditions are becoming increasingly important in these times of social and cultural change.
Each year through our annual arts and cultural program, we strive to represent a wide range of stories that reflect the diversity of our community. We seek to complement the artistic talent that exists here in our region with a performing arts program that fosters new and different interpretations and ways of looking at the world.

This year, we have a strong focus on creative audience participation, with a number of events presenting and explaining contemporary dance, theatre and world music. There will also be an opportunity for students to talk with the cast of Coranderrk, a work that is listed on the 2017 VCE playlist for Drama and Theatre studies.
Arts and culture take many forms: this program is only a small window into the ways in which our invited and local artists tell the stories that matter to them, and also to us.
Outside of this program, we encourage you to seek out opportunities for cultural expression in your local community—for we are blessed to be home to many artists and artistic groups, including writers, musicians, actors, and theatre groups.
I and my fellow Councillors encourage you to explore what’s on offer both here and more widely in your community, and I hope that you find a story that resonates with you.

Take a journey to Afghanistan via a mobile exhibition, titled A Candle in the Dark, at the Kyneton Town Hall. The exhibition includes photos tracing Save the Children’s “Children of Uruzgan” program in one of Afghanistan’s most conservative and insecure provinces.
Every year in Uruzgan, about 300 mothers and more than 3,000 children under the age of five die.
In A Candle in the Dark, evocative images by Elissa Bogos Mirzaei and Mats Lignell introduce the people who are changing Uruzgan’s future for the better through the Children of Uruzgan program, a partnership between the Australian Government and Save the Children Australia.

COMICDRAMA
A spectacular night of cabaret. In the past, audiences have witnessed Yana Alana nude, rude and lewd in Australia’s premier cabaret festivals. In a risqué act of defiance this drag bouffant diva will appear on stage with her all female band fully clothed, singing other people’s songs. With a set list from artists such as Nina Simone, Tom Waits, Shirley Bassey and Joy Division there is certainly going to be something here for everyone.
Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this Helpmann and ten-time Green Room award-winning star of the night completely covered!
“I don’t care who you are; but I promise you will love this show. Take your dad, take your girlfriend, hell, take your grandma. You don’t want to miss it.” Planet Arts Melbourne ★★★★★
“Yana Alana is without a doubt the first lady of cabaret. Outlandish, bawdy and slightly unhinged, she is worthy of cult status.”Melbourne Observer

COMEDY
A definitive story from our neglected Indigenous history. This special production by ILBIJERRI Theatre Company pays tribute to the resilience and adaptability of a people who rose to a challenge despite the odds, appropriating the power of the written word to make their own voices ring loud and clear. Coranderrk recreates the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry in 1881, where the men and women of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve went head-to-head with the Aboriginal Protection Board.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiences should be aware that this production contains images of deceased persons. It deals with real historical issues. The performers are all Indigenous Australians.
“It is honest, open, raw, emotional, poignant, true. There is a strong spirit in Coranderrk. And to sit in a crowded darkened theatre and witness it, is a truly humbling experience.” The Spell of Waking Hours
“What ILBIJERRI is able to take from this painful history is a story of resistance and of strength. ”The Age

Regarded as Australia’s finest guitar duo, they are expanding their horizons with new masterful arrangements of Bach, Elgar, Dvorak, Rachmaninoff, Faure, De Falla and Ponce.
Experience a unique mix of virtuosity, repertoire and improvisations performed on guitar. Their last visit sold out, so don’t miss this chance to see Slava and Leonard.

THE WITCHES
Roald Dahl re-imagined! When one little boy unwittingly stumbles into the annual meeting of witches, he hears their nasty plan to get rid of all the children in the world—by turning them into mice! It’s going to take smarts and sneakiness to stop them and not get squished in the process.
Think you can outwit a witch and outrun a mouse? Then grab a seat in the front row for The Witches, bursting onto the stage in this mind-boggling and madcap one-man show.
“Performed by a single actor…who shifts from character to character without drawing breath, this interpretation of Dahl’s scariest tale is full of life, physical movement, mischief and even audience interaction as people are singled out for witchery.” Helen Musa, City News

INTIMACYDealing with the complexities of human behaviour. Based on a series of real, intimate and diverse conversations with strangers, Intimacy gives a candid and sometimes disquieting portrait of everyday life where personal anxieties are never far from the surface.
How much of ourselves are we prepared to show? Why is it sometimes easier to be honest with a total stranger than with someone we know? Is this really honesty or just another performance?
“A presentation of such a high standard, both psychologically and theatrically. With depth and subtle manner of acting rarely seen…” Noorderzon Theatre Blog

THE EXOTIC LIVES OF LOLA MONTEZ
In 1855, the wildest showgirl of the nineteenth century toured Australia and its goldfields—the scandal is legend. From Patrick White Playwright Award Winner Jackie Smith and world famous cabaret stars Finucane & Smith [Cabaret Burlesque] comes the story of the wildest showgirl of the nineteenth century, Lola Montez.
She horsewhipped the editor of the Ballarat times (for a bad review), swung down mineshafts on a single rope with champagne in hand, and escaped arrest dressed only in her jewels. She was showered with gold nuggets and insults, and swathed in scandal.
With only one performance you will need to book early!
In 1855, the Sydney Morning Herald said her erotic Spider Dance was: “the most libertinish and indelicate performance ever to be seen on the public stage.”
“An exhilarating, anarchically erotic celebration of performance.” The Australian

Immerse yourself in a bygone era at the former home of a Bank Manager and his family, circa 1856.Located inside the original Bank of New South Wales, the Kyneton Museum portrays the life of a bank manager and his family from the 1850s. Walk through the dining room, bedrooms and parlour and see the exquisite textiles, furniture and personal effects of the period. Explore the grounds, including the building’s original kitchen, servants’ quarters, laundry and stables.
The proclamation of the State of Victoria was in 1851, just after gold was discovered right across the region. Traders emerged to supply the needs of the goldfields and established themselves in this productive agricultural land. Kyneton was thriving so business in the bank was good.
In addition to the original buildings are sheds that house historic transport and farm machinery collections, and Theaden Cottage, an example of 19th century colonial architecture that was relocated to the Museum in the 1970s. The Cottage depicts the life of early settlers—the very people who would have borrowed and banked with the Bank of New South Wales.
The original banking chamber is now the Museum’s temporary exhibition space. See over for details of four exhibitions being hosted at the Museum in 2017.
It’s storytime at the museum! Explore Dromkeen Homestead’s wonderful collection of original Australian children’s picture book illustrations.
From lovable possums, dirty dinosaurs, cheeky tom cats and slobbering gorillas, your heart will be captivated by these marvellous characters created by Australian authors and illustrators.
THE STORYBOOK CHARACTERS OF DROMKEENFriday 28 July to Sunday 15 October
Fashions from the time of Jane Austen. A rare and wonderful exhibition bringing Jane Austen to life in the original fashion of the era. Be Persuaded follows Jane’s life from growing up in the 18th century into the era most associated with her—the Regency era, at the beginning of the 19th century. The exhibition features rare fashion, accessories and ephemera from the 18th century through to the 1840s when Jane’s beloved sister Cassandra died. Pieces such as these are rarely on display outside of major museums—an 18th century silk gown, diaphanous Empire line frocks, boots, bonnets, parasols and more.
This exhibition is from the collection of Dressing Australia Museum of Costume.
BE PERSUADED: A JANE AUSTEN EXPERIENCEFriday 7 April to Sunday 9 July
Torn between two cultures. Photographs and multimedia that explore the experiences of refugees coming from Burma, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Jordan, Columbia, Iran and Somalia. Their stories cover themes such as universal parenting, the longing for loved ones separated by displacement or death, and using sport to build confidence in young people.
This exhibition is the culmination of work from a group of 40 photographers known as the Many Australian Photographers Group (MAPgroup), who share a passion for quality independent documentary photography.
BEYOND BORDERSFriday 3 March to Sunday 2 April
From the mundane to the exotic. We are all collectors, whether it be of shoes, books or fishing rods. It could be an investment, a hobby or it’s just too good a bargain to leave in the shop. Our collections convey to others something about who we are—as we store, display and use our assembled objects.
This exhibition is a collaboration with the Kyneton Historical Society, whose members will share with us some of their collections.

TOO MANY MIRANDAS
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the famous Australian novel Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay. To celebrate the occasion, the community will be invited to join in the creation of a special public dance event at Hanging Rock called Too Many Mirandas. The project will start with a series of dance workshops across the shire, open to all members of the community. It will engage artists to create a musical score, develop the choreography and then teach the dance moves to community participants. These workshops will culminate in a public ‘mass dance’ event, where everyone can dress up in Miranda outfits, join in the fun and share a picnic at Hanging Rock.
If you want to stay up-to-date with Too Many Mirandas, follow the #toomanymirandas hashtag, like the Macedon Ranges Arts & Culture Facebook page or subscribe to our e-newsletter (see page 52 for details). Use the hashtag to share your stories or images about your experiences or memories of Miranda, the 1975 Peter Weir film or your visits to Hanging Rock.
