CULTURE POINTS #1 Due Date #1 (one activity): November 18 th Due Date #2 (all activities): December 16 th Language and culture are inseparable—language influences a population’s collective culture, and cultural influences create new vocabulary words and accents in languages. Therefore part of learning a new language is becoming more acquainted with the culture(s) associated with that language. For this assignment, you are required to complete 50 culture points. You must choose either two (2) activities from Category A and one (1) from Category C, or one (1) activity from Category B and one (1) from Category C. Upon completion of the activity, create a brief written summary of what you did. It is your responsibility to keep track of the activities and points that you have completed. You may also choose to create activities of your choice, but these must be approved by Señorita Bryant prior to beginning the activity. CATEGORY A: 10 POINTS EACH 1) Bring in items from a Spanish-speaking country and explain them to the class. 2) Research one aspect of Spanish culture and share it with the class. 3) Teach someone a Spanish mini-lesson. 4) Make a chart to show the change in value of the Mexican peso or the Euro (to the US dollar). Follow the value changes in the newspaper for two weeks. 5) Select ten items for sale in the newspaper and convert the prices into peso (using the newspaper for the exchange rate for that day.) Include the advertisement in your report. 6) Write and present a short summary for a current event from a Spanish- speaking country. 7) Buy a Spanish or Mexican food item. Compare it to the American version by taking notes on price, packaging, texture, taste, and appearance of the two. 8) Go to a grocery store and find five products from a Spanish-speaking country. List the product name, what type of food it is, price country of origin, and any other pertinent information. 9) Find photographs of Spanish-made cars and basic information on the major Spanish automobile manufacturer. Include a short summary and your sources of information. 10) Memorize two Spanish proverbs and recite them to your teacher. CATEGORY B: 20 POINTS EACH 1) Prepare a crossword puzzle or word search in Spanish with at least 20-25 vocabulary words. Include the answer key. 2) Write a letter in Spanish to a Spanish-speaking pen pal (that may or may not really exist.) 3) Prepare a Spanish vocabulary game. 4) Eat at a Spanish or Mexican restaurant (excluding fast food! ) Order something new and report about your experience. 5) Create a poster promoting the study of foreign language or Spanish. Include at least four specific advantages to learning a new language and relevant vocabulary words.

7) Select any 10-20 year time period. List well-known Hispanic artists of that time and describe the characteristics of their work, or create a work of art that mimics that artist’s style.

8) Pick any sport and research its role in a Spanish-speaking country. Include your sources.9) Research foreign language requirement to: graduate from high school, get into a four-year

college, and graduate from a four-year college. Include your sources.

CATEGORY C: 30 POINTS EACH1) Plan and prepare a Spanish meal for your family. You must also clean up after the meal.

Submit menu/ingredients; explain the whole process of preparing your meal, your own thoughts and comments from your family, and a signature of a parent/guardian. (They may include comment if they wish.)

2) Research Mexican influence on American cuisine. Write a one-page report on your findings, and include your sources.

3) Research Spanish influence in one of the following areas: art, architecture, dance, music, film or history. Write a one-page report on your findings, and include your sources.

4) Watch at least 30 minutes of a Spanish television newscast (example: Univisión). Report on what you saw and any words in Spanish you recognized. Also, compare and contrast their newscast with the newscasts here in the Portland area; what are the similarities and differences? Write a one-page report on your findings.

5) Interview a native Spanish-speaker and ask them questions about their childhood and background. Ask them about their language-learning experience as they learned to speak English. Include similarities and differences they have found between the United States and their native country (example: foods, schools, celebrations, etc.) Write a one-page summary of your interview, and make sure to explain who the interview subject was and how you know them.
